By Will Ripley, Steven Jiang and Jethro Mullen, CNN | Video Source: CNN Story highlights "I thought we were finished," says a man who escaped from a collapsed building More than 500 people have been hospitalized, dozens of them with critical injuries Firefighters are among the dead and many remain missing, state media report Tianjin, China (CNN)— You can see the devastation everywhere: in the hollowed-out shells of barely-standing buildings, in the anguished faces of relatives waiting for news of loved ones, in the parade of scorched cars. But what was it that set off the terrifying blasts that ripped through warehouses containing hazardous chemical materials, sending fireballs shooting across the sky and shaking tall buildings more than 2 miles away? Hours later, amid the destruction in this northern Chinese port city of more than 13 million, the exact cause of Wednesday night's blast remained unclear. A thick chemical odor hung in the air. Fires still burned in the waterfront industrial district where the explosions went off. And the grim toll kept mounting. At least 50 people are confirmed dead, including 12 firefighters, officials said Thursday. More than 500 people are hospitalized, and 71 of them were in critical condition, the state-run Xinhua news outlet reported. Dozens of firefighters are missing. Local authorities suspended firefighting efforts Thursday because of a lack of information about the "dangerous goods" stored at the warehouse at the heart of the blasts, Xinhua said. The explosions originated at a warehouse site owned by Tianjin Dongjiang Port Rui Hai International Logistics Co. Ltd., a company that stores and transports dangerous chemicals. Company executives have been taken into custody, state media said. The blasts' destructive force tore into Tianjin, smashing buildings and mangling shipping containers. The first explosion was huge, but the second was even more powerful -- the equivalent of 21 metric tons of TNT or a magnitude 2.9 earthquake, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. The power of the explosions destroyed the house where Qian Jiping and his wife, both of them migrant construction workers, were staying. "When I heard the first explosion, I thought we were finished," he said. Strangers pulled them from the rubble. They fled barefoot, desperate to get away, barely feeling the jagged shards of glass that littered the ground. Across the city, residents were jolted awake as the blasts shattered windows and fish tanks. "The shock wave just blew through our apartment. It blew out the glass, it blew out the doors, it knocked out the power," said Vafa Anderson, a teacher at an international school who lives less than two kilometers from the explosions' epicenter. Anderson told CNN he was awakened by the first blast and was looking out the window when the second went off, sending a "huge mushroom cloud" into the sky. "I thought it was an earthquake!" said Liu Yue, a 25-year-old woman who lives about four kilometers away. "I was extremely scared. I was afraid my family was in danger." She told CNN the entire 16-floor building she lives in was rocking. The injured were taken to different hospitals in the city, with many reported to be suffering from cuts caused by broken glass. People gathered outside one hospital not far from an area of badly damaged buildings, waiting for news of loved ones. A severely burned man was wheeled past waiting crowds. Some people collapsed from the heartbreak of losing someone close to them. "Why did God take her? Why did God take my daughter?" one man cried out. What to know about the Tianjin crisis Will Ripley and Steven Jiang reported from Tianjin. Jethro Mullen reported and wrote from Hong Kong. Shen Lu, Dana Ford and Elizabeth Joseph contributed to this report. As Nigerians look forward to the presidential elections holding next month across Nigeria, a new video has surfaced on You Tube showing the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buharinot able to recall the name of his running mate Prof. Yemi Osinbajo during his election campaign in Owerri, Imo state capital. According to the 5:56 minutes video, the former Head of State while speaking at the rally called his running mate ‘Yemi Osinbade’ instead of Yemi Osinbajo. Below is the video posted on Youtube: They mocked Jonathan for saying Buhari cant remember his phone number. Watch Buhari forget the name of his own VP Since the video surfaced on the internet, it has gone viral with political opposition of the APC and many Nigerians expressing shock on the development. While commenting on the incident on his official Twitter handle, the Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media, Reno Omokri, tweeted that “May God save Nigeria from a presidential candidate that cant even remember the name of his VP! May God save Nigeria. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vtan7pDiaU www.naij.com/359759-buhari-forgets-name-of-his-running-mate-at-owerri-rally.html |
Since the emergence of the All Progressives Congress, Nigerians have been arguing whether the party is different from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. Also, both parties’ presidential candidates, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) and the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, and their respective teams have come under the scrutiny of the electorate. Naij.com guest writer Dr. Deborah Nelson , from Ilorin, once again appeals publicly to a prominent Nigerian politician – this time, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, an influential member of the APC. “Good day, Sir. Congratulations on the successful conduct of the APC’s convention in Lagos to elect its presidential candidate for the 2015 election. Though you were denied the luxury to conduct the ‘selection’ in your bedroom as usual, you still managed to weep the Oshimholes into line behind your ‘beloved godson’ , General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) . Having succeeded in forcing APC governors to ‘gang up’ against other presidential aspirants, you set the stage for the exercise to be professionally manipulated to produce him as the elected presidential candidate of the APC. Consequently, Governor Okorocha, one of the presidential candidates, had since been blaming his failure to win the primary election on what he calls ‘gang-up of the APC governors’. If any other presidential candidate was the beneficiary of the ‘gang-up’, your godson would have condemned it and incited his supporters to soak ‘dogs and baboons’ in blood. He had since been adopted as a consensus candidate for Northern Nigeria (Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri Muslims, to be specific). According to Alhaji Coomassie , the Chairman of a Hausa-Fulani pressure group, ACF, the North “is going to support a Northern candidate. And since APC had voted a Northern candidate, we are going to support him 100%. So Buhari is our candidate for the 2015 election.” “Days after Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Sir Ahmadu Bello was quoted to having said, “This new nation called Nigeria should be an estate of our great grand father, Usman Dan Fodio. We must ruthlessly prevent a change of power. We use the minorities in the North as winning tools and the South as a conquered territory, never allow them to rule over us and never allow them to have control over their future.” Since the above statement was made by the Sultan, it had continued to serve as a roadmap for Hausa-Fulani politicians, hence they believe that it is their birthright to use any means possible to either reclaim power or prevent non-Hausa-Fulani Muslims from ruling over them. Sir, as long as prominent Nigerians like you prefer to serve them as ‘winning tools’, Hausa-Fulani politicians will continue to behave as if Nigeria is an estate of Usman Dan Fodio. In 1961, the same Sultan Bello said, “I am set and fully armed to conquer the Action Group in the same ruthless manner my great grandfather conquered Alkalawa, a town in Sokoto Province during the last Century.” May I remind you, Sir, that what happened to Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the Action Group between then and 1966 were direct consequences of this statement. Any Yoruba politician who fails to find out the real source of conflict between the two illustrious sons of Oduduwa, Chief Awolowo and Chief Akintola and adjust accordingly may have themselves to blame. You can never be more loyal to Hausa-Fulani politicians than late Chief MKO Abiola, but where is he today and how was he rewarded? “There are irrefutable records at the United States District Court for Northern District of Illinois indicating that most of your assets and properties were confiscated by the US government in 1993 because of your involvement in drug trafficking in the US. The records also indicate that you were an employee of Mobil Nigeria Limited on a salary of $2,400 per month and a proud owner of ten bank accounts, one at the First Heritage Bank, nine at the Citi International Bank. Out of over $1.4 million USD found in your accounts, you forfeited $460,000 USD to the US government. Although you were not subjected to criminal prosecution, the fact that you acceded to forfeit $460,000 USD to the US government on account of your trafficking in drugs in the US was on its own a conviction. However, if you are not a convicted drug baron, as contained in the court papers and report to NDLEA, call a press conference and exonerate yourself because the APC cannot afford to have a convicted drug baron as its national leader. “In order to actualize your self-imposed task of installing a Hausa-Fulani president in 2015, you collaborated with Hausa-Fulani politicians, the most conservative ethnic groups in the country, to form a political party, the All Progressives Congress. Funny enough, APC’s slogan is ‘change’. Change from what to what? The policies of the APC-controlled states, especially those in the North, and antecedents of its key members are anything but progressive. Sokoto, Kano, Borno, Yobe states are dominated by Hausa, Fulani, and Kanuri Muslims. At the recently-concluded National Conference, they rejected fiscal federalism, state police, local government autonomy, resource control, Child Rights Bill, among other propositions. They consider Western education, birth control, vaccination against polio, and girl child education as ‘anti- Islamic’. Because of their ‘progressive’ policies, Nigeria is yet to eradicate polio. These states account for over 90% of beggars, internally displaced persons, illiterates and almajiris . While a girl child as young as 7 years old is given out in marriage, a boy child as young as 5 years old is dumped with any Imam anywhere for years to acquire Islamic education with no support whatsoever from his biological parents. In these ‘progressive’ states, people reproduce like rabbits as long as they live thereby creating inexhaustible reservoirs of expendable human robots (almajiris) whom your godson and other Hausa-Fulani politicians had been using to prosecute religious riots often initiated by them. Sir, are these the much-trumpeted changes Nigerians should expect from the APC? “Your godson is expected to ‘captain’ the Nigerian ship should the APC emerge victorious in 2015 presidential election, but his utterances are to say the least disturbing. While speaking in Kaduna at a seminar organized by Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria in 2001, he said, “Sharia should be introduced in full across Nigeria. I will continue to show openly and inside me the total commitment to the Sharia movement that is sweeping all over Nigeria. God’s willing, we will not stop the agitation for the total implementation of the Sharia in the country. It is a legal responsibility which Allah has given us within the context of one Nigeria to continue to uphold the practice of Sharia wholeheartedly and to educate non-Muslims that they have nothing to fear. What remains of Muslims in Nigeria is for them to redouble their efforts and educate fellow Muslims on the need to promote the full implementation of Sharia Laws.” “In spite of the bloody Sharia riots in Kaduna State in 2000 which claimed thousands of lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira, he was here in 2001 announcing his “total commitment to Sharia movement” . This was an arrogant display of insensitivity. His total commitment to promote full implementation of Sharia Laws in Nigeria might have convinced him to regard Boko Haram terrorists as partners in the service of Allah because, apart from warning President Jonathan that any attack on Boko Haram terrorists would be considered as an attack on the North, he went further to criticize the President for not treating Boko Haram terrorists the same way Niger Delta militants are being treated. He said that Boko Haram terrorists were only fighting for their rights, hence Jonathan should stop bombing them and destroying their homes. Sir, what ‘changes’ do we expect from a man with such undiluted commitment to promote full implementation of Sharia Laws in Nigeria? “Sir, I observe that you and other key members of APC always threaten to set the nation ablaze if APC does not emerge victorious in 2015 presidential election. At your investiture as the Pro-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomoso, you said, “No government that wants people’s votes will be doing what they are doing. They are already planning to rig the elections, but be prepared to protect your votes, nobody serves you freedom à la carte. It is going to be rig and roast.” “In 2010, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar said, “Those who make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable .” In 2014, Mallam el- Rufai said, “The next election is likely to be violent and many people are likely going to die. And the only alternative left to get power is to take it by force, this is the reality on the ground.” In March 2014, APC Chieftain from North East, Alhaji Abu Shuluwa , said, “Nigeria will descend into anarchy if Jonathan is allowed to contest 2014 election.” APC Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed , said, “Let us remind the presidency in case it has forgotten that electoral fraud triggered civil war in Algeria in the 1990s.” The Chairman of APC, Chief John Oyegun , said, “If we do not see any discernable change of attitude on the part of government, then we will move to the next stage on the list of actions that our party intends to take to stop the rot being perpetrated by the PDP government.” During Salvation Rally in Port Harcourt, Governor Amaechi said, “What is the essence of going to court when the Federal Government does not obey the laws? That is why APC will not go to court any longer. If you rig us, out we will rig ourselves in, which means if you can rig us out in 2015, we will form our own government. We have met on that, we have agreed on that. We will install our own government, and there will be two governments.” At his inauguration on 27 November 2014, Governor Aregbesola said, “We will take over Federal Government next year. Anything you have, get it ready. We must pursue Jonathan out of Abuja next year by all means necessary.” “Judging from your antecedents, election is never credible unless you are declared the winner. You have promised to set the nation ablaze if you do not win next year’s presidential election. The other day, I saw your godson in a group photograph with his beautiful children. How would he feel if anyone killed these lovely, innocent children just because a politician does not win an election? Sir, how would you feel if your beautiful wife were ‘roasted’ because a politician does not win an election? Even considering that the election is massively rigged, does that justify killings? What’s next? When will you use your privileged position to serve your creator and mankind instead of chasing shadows and shedding blood? Your godson’s utterances had led to post-election violence that swept through the North in 2011. Apart from turning thousands into orphans, widows, widowers, what has he benefited from that avoidable but massive destruction of lives and properties? “The participation of your ‘godson’ as the APC presidential candidate in the forthcoming presidential election is a two-edged sword. His victory or defeat are both to likely cause problems. In case of defeat, you both are most likely to stir up violence; but this time, I am afraid, there may be reprisal attacks. All these outbreaks may degenerate into total breakdown of law and order. If Buhari wins, the people of Niger Delta may disrupt oil and gas production to make his government ungovernable because they believe that Hausa-Fulani politicians are the sponsors of Boko Haram terrorists and Fulani herdsmen. Such development will have very serious adverse effects on the economy. However, this can be averted if the recommendations of the recently-concluded National Conference are fully implemented. “This country must not be allowed to break up as predicted by the Americans. God bless Nigeria.” www.naij.com/361438-2015-naij-com-reader-publicly-appeals-to-apcs-senator-tinubu.html

op are u telling us what happened to you? |
We all agree that nothing beats the sensation you get when you down a bottle of cold water or soda when you are hot. That chilling and refreshing sensation could akin to seeing a river in a desert. As rewarding as cold water can be, in hot weathers like ours, experts say that it comes with serious health consequences. They warn that one may need to hands off drinking cold water regularly due to its negative impact on the heart and the digestive system. Consultant nutritionist, Dr. Tosin Akinsanya, says even though the body cannot have too much of water, it complains when it has too much of cold water. According to the food and healthy living expert, cold water is at a temperature that contradicts the overall temperature within the body system. Akinsanya says that normal body temperature of the body is between 34 and 37 oC while that of cold water is usually between zero and two degrees Celsius and this sudden change in temperature levels, which usually happens when we drink cold water, shocks the body, leading to chronic diseases in those who drink it over time. “The body is made up of 70 per cent of warm water. Water is the most important fluid in the body because it is the medium blood uses. It is the medium which circulates nutrients around the body. If the 30 per cent we drink is against the normal temperature of the body, we see how hard it is for the body to make use of it. Cold water causes distress in the tissues and blood vessels. “The body has to warm up the cold water you drink every time to an acceptable temperature before it can take it up for digestion, nutrient and blood circulation. That is why we advise people not, take drugs with cold water. The drugs will not digest on time; it means you won’t get the best of the drugs because the water did not dissolve on time.” Family health physician and author of Ten Habits To Drop Right Now, Dr. Vasant Lad, adds that drinking cold water after a meal has adverse effects on the digestive system. Lad also warns against drinking cold water immediately before a meal. For Dr. Lucia John, a major reason why we should ditch cold water for tepid or warm one is its effect on the heart. According to the healthy living expert, the heart labours more to restore blood circulation when we drink cold water that is not compatible with the body’s temperature. She says, “When we drink cold water, juice, or any cold fluids, we create the basis for chronic heart diseases. Cold water has a clotting effect on the blood and other fluids in the body making it difficult for it to circulate. “A body that cannot circulate its blood is like an uninviting swimming pool in which moss and bacteria grow. The blood may be thick, unable to flow properly to the extremities of the body, the hands and feet begin to feel numb and hurt, the toes begin to hurt, and the toenails lose their shine and may begin to decay. The heart labours to pump the blood throughout the body, and the lungs fight to keep up. The legs may swell and become dark, when blood cannot efficiently pump back up to the heart. “When the blood is free from toxins and flowing freely and properly, we can then liken the blood to an inviting swimming pool, clear and clean. It generates happiness and perfect health, energy and creativity. This individual contributes maximum to the health and wellbeing of others in an innocent, natural way.” Scientists have also solved the mystery behind the instantaneous headache brought on by a sip of an ice-cold drink. According to the neurologists who analysed the result of a study, which involved 5,000 participants over a period of five years, cold water is not friendly to some sections of the brain. The researchers found that sipping it causes an abrupt increase in blood flow to a major artery in the brain that is then followed by the familiar headache-like. The experts warn that over time this effect may shrink some receptors in the brain. Knowing all this, we have a responsibility to put into our bodies, only drinks and foods that will enhance its proper functioning. Akinsanya gives a final advice on the need to take regularly water at a normal temperature. “The brain is fairly sensitive to temperature change, that is why it freezes when you drink cold water at first. This continuous seizure is not good for it. The brain is one of the relatively important organs in the body, and it needs to be working all the time. We should avoid anything that will make it freeze,” he adds. To know the right temperature of water to drink, Akinsanya says, “Put one finger in your mouth and close it. The temperature of what you feel is the temperature of water or food that you eat most times. That is what the body is used to and that is what you should give it.” www.punchng.com/health/healthwise/cold-water-can-be-refreshing-but-unhealthy/ |

Nigerians always blame the government in power for the problems of the nation even though many of these preceded the government in power. Why do we always do this? For instance, ask any Nigerian what the problem is with Nigeria and they will say like, Chinua Achebe, that it is leadership, forgetting that Nigeria’s leaders come from amongst us; and if we are saying that our problem is leadership, we are invariably supporting the racist Rhodesian doctrine that a black man would thrive best under white rule. So if our problem is not leadership, what then is it? I propose that our problem in Nigeria is that we lack a sense of history and we live only in the present moment which means that we are always reacting and hardly ever pro-acting. If my five year old son comes to me and tells me that he has lost his toy, I would ask him to think back to the last time that he saw it and begin the search from there. Nigeria has seen phenomenal growth in the last three years with our Gross Domestic Product, GDP, growing at a rate of over 6% per annum, making us one of the world’s 10 fastest growing economies. Yet, we still have areas of Nigeria where population growth is higher than the growth rate of our GDP; and it is only common sense that where population outpaces production, there will be crisis. This is a theory that Reverend Malthus propounded and which has stood the test of time. Between 1960 when Nigeria got independence and 1966 when we experienced the first military intervention in governance, Nigeria experienced phenomenal growth – a feat that has evaded us since, except for the growth we have had in the last three years. Almost all of the national institutions that were responsible for our growth pre-1999, were products of that first golden era before the first coup, such as the four great universities, (Lagos, Ife, Nsukka and Zaria), Kainji Dam, Nigeria Airways etc. Also, in the same time period, we had some of the best civil servants in the world and our public service was very functional. There were reports from that era that some of our politicians were corrupt, but it is universally acknowledged that our civil servants of those times were above board. Our hospitals were renowned worldwide and it will surprise some to note that the Saudi Royal family received treatment at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, in the early 60s. At that time we did not have oil in the quantum that we have today, yet, the nation was thriving, we had little or no foreign debt and we were first amongst equals in the council of emerging nations that included Indonesia, Brazil and Egypt. But all these changed after 1966. So, as I would say to my five year old, if you are looking for a thing, go back to the last place where you saw it. That place is 1966! Pre-1966, admission into primary and secondary schools was purely on merit. The same was the case for universities as well as the federal civil service. After 1966 when the military intervened and ended the First Republic all that changed and has remained the same till today. A child could no longer bank on academic prowess as the yardstick for his gaining entry into primary and secondary schools. Children at their most tender years, when they were being emotionally scripted, were told that even though they passed and passed well, they were not good enough for government funded schools because of where they came from. With the Quota system of entrance into public schools introduced after 1966 and enshrined by the military into our body polity extant laws, children as young as nine got to understand that in Nigeria, where you come from is more important than how intelligent and hardworking you are. Now, the sad thing about the policy of quota systems is that geneticists in the very best universities of the world have established that some races and tribes are not more intelligent than others and as such you can find intelligence in almost equal measure wherever you use it as a yard stick. In fact, many, including the Harvard Medical Journal, have reported that culture is more to blame than intelligence for the reason why some peoples are backward while others are progressive. And our culture has been that children who are more endowed intellectually are held back and children who could grow their intellectual capacity are prevented from doing so because there was no need to challenge them intellectually. Come as you are, the system says. This system would probably have brought minimal damage if it was limited to secondary schools, but it is not. After completing secondary school, post 1966 Nigerian youths faced the same issues in gaining admission to Nigerian universities. Cut off marks and catchment areas were discriminately apportioned using region as a yard stick. So, after being told at age nine that were you came from was more important than your intelligence or your academic hard work, the message is reinforced at age 16-17 when you are still in your formative years. At 16, you enter university and study for four or five years (ASUU permitting) and then graduate and go through your National Youth Service (one of the best policies the military bequeathed to Nigeria) and then you start to look for a job. The largest employer of labour is the government, so naturally you start there. And what do you find? At age 24, just as when you were nine and sixteen, you are now faced with a policy that says where you are from is more important than what you can bring into the system. You are told that although you are qualified, the system must take people who are less qualified than you because of where you are from and where they are from. So, between the ages of nine and 24, your psyche has been reinforced and scripted with the message that where you are from is more important than what you bring to the table. Why wouldn’t a post 1966 civil servant face temptation to steal when merit is not the order of the day and you are forced to serve under someone who did not get his placement by merit – who enjoys perks and privileges far in excess of you? How can such a system promote morale and how can you have efficiency where morale is low? Prior to 1966, an Nnamdi Azikiwe could win election in Ibadan and an Umoru Altine could win election as the first mayor of Enugu, but how can we replicate that ideal when, in every form you have filled since the age of 6, your ethnicity, state of origin and religion has mattered more than your Nigerianness. But whenever you watch television in the 1980s you see the MAMSER directorate showing you clips of your leaders telling you that where you come from does not matter and what matters is that “we are all MAMSER people who want the basic things of life”. It is not until you get to your 30s and you watch as those same leaders that sold you and your parents that line form themselves into Northern and Southern Political Leaders Forum that you realized that you have been had! And then young people who through no fault of their own have been conditioned to only live in the moment are then manipulated by these same set of leaders to begin to blame the government of the day for crumbling infrastructure that has been neglected for years and is only now being addressed after decades of neglect for the simple reason that we now have a leader who emerged not through the establishment but through events that could only be described as divine. And then you wonder, do they know their friends from their enemies? I mentioned Kainji Dam earlier but young people would be surprised to note that between 1979 and 1999 no new power plants were initiated and the one commissioned in 1982 was initiated in 1978! Yet, these same young people egged on by those who have milked the system in that time frame point accusing fingers at the man who is making a difference. Take something as universal as power. In Nigeria, history has been made as the power sector has just been privatized by President Goodluck Jonathan in fulfillment of the promises he made to Nigerians when he launched the Roadmap to Power Sector Reforms on August 26th 2010. But before then, Nigeria has and is still suffering from chronic power shortages. Now, power is one of those industries that rely strictly on efficient manpower in order to function properly. But power has been exclusively managed and operated by the government. Now who would the government hire to run our power plants, transmission grids and their commercial offices? Of course it would be Nigerian citizens. Now, are those citizens the very best Nigeria has? No! These are citizens employed as part of the federal civil service that depends not on merit but on ethnicity for its hiring. So, what then do Nigerians expect from such a venture? You can repeat this for our refineries, airports, railways, sea ports, and other vital national institutions. It is a notorious fact (yes, that phrase again) that you are only as strong as your weakest link. Therefore, where you have not taken in the best right from secondary up to university and up to the civil service, your system is only as strong as the least endowed person. To put this into perspective, if you have a school entry system that gives someone who scored 2 admission, and stops someone who scored 290 from getting admitted, your system is only as strong as a 2. The saddest thing is that if he knew that he would only get in if he had a 290 and nothing else would ensure he gets in, he would be forced to build his capacity to at least a 290. It is called competition and that is what existed between 1960 and 1966. That, my people, is the problem with Nigeria. President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership he offers to Nigeria is not our problem. As a matter of fact, it is part of our solutions. Why do I say this? Because this is a man who has seen that even though we have made phenomenal progress in the last three years such as we have never witnessed between 1966 till date, yet we can do better. And speaking as a private citizen, it is my hope that the coming national conference would look into these issues and go back in time to the place where we lost it.
