quisera: You shouldn't generalise. I'm a private school teacher and I'm doing just fine. From onset I've never depended on my salary. I think any private school teacher without a private lesson should have a rethink, truth is the only thing keeping me in the teaching line is the money I make from home lessons. At the moment I run 5 home lessons with a minimum of #15000 each monthly. The lockdown had an initial effect as most of my lessons stopped but as it stands most parents are weary of leaving their wards too idle for long and d search for lesson teachers is on the high side now. I've given more than 4 lessons out bcoz I can hardly manage the ones I have. So I think my colleagues here should try to look out more and please don't keep quiet, always tell people you need home lessons and by God's grace u'll smile while others are complaining. Please if you need science teachers for home lessons around Ibeju-Lekki/Awoyaya, I'm available. |

jamesharryson: I have even forgotten about getting money from someone talk more of salary!
U regret handling chalk in the first place! Our proprietor paid last in February, and that was even half salary. From March till date, we are on our own. We have all our hopes in God for feeding.
The funniest part of it was that my landlord came last week to ask of rent as if he is from another planet As for the rent, I pray I get something to do to realize my rent before September. If not, I might be considering compulsory relocation. Landlords/ladies don't want to know whether there's lockdown or not. When it's time, they'll come for rent. I strongly believe the experience varies amongst private teachers. While some still recived payment to date, some were last paid for February . Funnily enough, I fall in the class of those that were last paid for February. Had to send some cash home around March, still sent some home again, during April lockdown. Now, I'm currently on one round of provision, JAH knows when and where I'd get the next aid. Recently, I checked my account balance and my brain rebooted. I didn't know whether to hibernate or switch off, or go to silent mode. Only JAH knows where the next miracle will come from. Thanks to JAH for OperaMini's free 50MB, and free SMSs from local network providers. Really hoping on JAH for miracles in any form or void. I strongly believe that things will get better with the passge of time. Please I'm open to opportunities for remote work, online or offline. I stay in Lagos, around Eputu/Ibeju-Lekki axis. Any assistance will be gratefully received. Thanks in advance. JAH help us. |

buikem2: I own a private school.. Not in Nigeria but in another African country.
We stopped school Mid-march and I paid full salary to all teachers and workers. But I made it clear to them that we don't have the means to pay other months if there's no school and no school fees entering. Here school fees are paid monthly and not per term.
Na so e be since. They didn't get anything in April and will not get in May. I feel for them but we can't jeopardise the future of the school for the sake of families of workers. It's a contract... You work, you receive payment. The contract isn't to take care of their families. It's simple business rule.
Some came crying they don't have anything to eat and I gave some palliatives, not in the of school oh but personal sentiments.
We pray this all stops so that everyone returns and things get back to normal.
I say mek I drop my opinion from a school owner. For this you've done, I have no doubt, you're a considerate school owner. Don't be surprised that they'll like to continue work with you, after thee lockdown. Such acts of kindness are very uncommon. |

DreManuel: If my memory doesn't fail me, the DS-160 form is completed like any other form.
I would try to complete the application in one sitting if I can. If I'd do it bit by bit then I'd also ensure that I have my Confirmation Number saved or written somewhere in case the system locks me out due to inactivity. Okay. Great thanks. Can the DS-160 form be filled before paying SEVIS fee? Thanks. |
Travel › Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by vc1177(m): 6:14pm On May 22, 2020 |
fairheart: Subsequent to my former post, you can just secure your I-20 ahead (obtain a soft copy for now), start filling your DS-160 bit by bit, prepare your interview transcript--all done under a huge blanket of HOPE.
But don't pay the visa fee and SEVIS yet. If your passport has expired, renew it now. Don't put off those prerequisites to the interview, except for payment of sevis and visa fee (GTB won't take visa fee from anyone now self).
I have a few students in my DM asking if they should defer. DO NOT defer yet! I advice that you wait till August 10 (based on my calculation) before you defer. By then you'd have known that Fall 2020 is no-no.
If you have a GA and your school is among those universities putting all courses online, you may be required to start your program from Nigeria online. I even have information that some GA works will will be conducted from remote locations. University of North Carolina at Charlotte, for example, is trying to conduct some of its Master's programs 100% online. It may be possible to retain your GA role. Will they pay you? To which account? These are some of the questions I have been asked...
Well, from experience, nobody knows. But consider the possibility of taking your courses online in case your school go with that. Will you do online course? I know it is not lively and interactive as face-to-face in a four-walled classroom.
Well, all the best! Please, how does one start filling the DS-160 form, bit by bit, after getting his/her I-20? Thanks. |

iwriterng: 1. Accent. Accent. Accent. Had to deliberately learn to speak slowly and also spend time improving my enunciation. People tell you to “be you”; trust me being you with your accent will leave you with a lot of angry students. Resulting into bad reviews at the end of the semester.
Also don’t assume you don’t speak fast; I think we all do as Nigerian. So speak slowly, speak clearly and always write some difficult words on the board.
2. You have no control over this. Just be as helpful as possible. Know that American undergrad system is nothing compared to ours. They have lots of course load, assignment, quiz, papers presentation etc. so don’t take it personal if they’re not doing well in your class. It’s not you; it’s them. I was dead worried at first cos I assumed it’s a reflection of my effort, but then my supervisor told me about this and I became more confident.
3. American students are “spoon-fed” type. In a class on 20, you might have 3 or 4 really bright student. Others? Well well; let’s say you have to invest more time on them. And you’re expected to encourage them with positive words and not threaten or do any of those “you will fail” stuff.
4. Make it your goal to be helpful to these kids just like your professors are being helpful to you. Learn that some of them can be rude; emphasize “courtesy” in your class and be assertive when you feel disrespected. Not in a domineering way, but rather calm and instructive manner. Hello Elder(s) iwriterng. Great thanks for the detailed responses. I am grateful. Trust everyone has been staying safe. Thanks again for your contributions to the thread. I still have more questions below: 5. Still on the TA experience, please can you compare it with an average teaching position in Nigeria, both senior secondary and university level, using the amount of teaching periods, workloads and some other environmental factors. 6. Also, are potential TAssistants open to regular trainings? 7. Do TAssistants have personal offices they use for consultations with undergraduates? 8. What is the difference between a TAssistant and a GAssistant? Are there any form of similarity between the two positions? 9. Are there strict policies that govern undergraduate classroom behaviours? 10. On the part of student's misconduct, what should a TAssistant do to remedy the situation? Please Elder(s), I'm open to your wealth of inputs. Thank you for your esteemed audience. |

Eniolakiite: Preparation is better than being caught unawares.
Please students in the process, go on with everything you have to do asides the visa interview that is on hold for now of course. Pay your sevis and get all necessary documents. Anything can happen now and they will start visa interviews again.
If it happens that you can’t resume as at when you supposed to, there will be policies that will accommodate things like sevis payment that do expire and all as everyone in the world knows what’s happening. Many organizations here are extending the deadline of the services they render and its associated benefits.
So I would say don’t panic and just do the needful. Thanks for the updates. I feel strongly that, clarity has been somewhat achieved, on the part of the US. Still, I'm somewhat worried about the inefficient strategy in use by our government, when it comes to handling pandemic matters. Let's not be surprised that, the US embassy/consulate in Nigeria might not want to resume ontime, if timely measures are not taken to contain this pandemic internally. I think we still have something to worry about: potential delays in renormalization of the Nigerian economy. |

Hello Everyone. Trust that we've been doing safely well. Thanks for your contribution to the thread.
Please I'd like to know more about your experience with TA for undergraduates in the US.
1. What challenges did you encounter in the past, with TA for undergraduates? 2. How were the students performance on average? 3. How are their mindset like? Are they the "spoon-feed-me" type of students or the "adventurous" type of students? 4. What advice do you have for potential/intending TAssistants?
Thanks in advance. |

Like I told someone, if I were Donald Trump, I'd leave the international scene to look inwards and take care of pressing needs, before returning to the international scene again. He needs it, the US need it; they need breathing-space for now, to recover the lost virtue. Let's be empathetic and hope for the best. NB: Mind you, I am also an innocent applicant in Naija |

As a leader, it is expected of him to put the welfare of his people first, before others. Besides, it is temporary ban that won't take long, tentatively till August. Let's keep HOPE alive. There's still room for optimism. PS: I feel we should be more concerned about the inefficient strategy the Nigerian government is using to tackle the pandemic. Embassies won't want to resume administrative duties, if the pandemic is not properly contained in the nearest future. This might be a potential red-flag, if it happens. |

An also, If there are some who has not made up their mind concerning multiple offers, please do so. Some schools are revoking funding for undeciding students oh. Yes. It is normal. Most schools that sent offer letters to qualified students, around March, gave them till around April to accept or reject their offers. The undeciding students might not be that lucky because the revoked funding will be given to those on waiting list. |
