Millex:

How about their DE?, did they use merit for that too
Direct entry into medicine in the University of Ibadan is based on merit. A total of 27 students were admitted into 200 level mbbs programme.
The mistake I noticed aspirants aspiring to be admitted into medicine and surgery programmes in Nigeria medical schools is that most aspirants don't know the admission policy of certain schools.
some certain schools like uniben and unilorin don't release their cutoff so most candidates that chose those don't know whether they attained the stipulated cutoff or not.
I have heard cases of people scoring as high as 80 and still not admitted.
The second mistake that I noticed aspirants do make is seeking for admission in schools that has a low merit quota I.e the no of candidates that they admit on merit is less than 50 percent for each set.
It is not that they don't admit candidates on merit but the no they admit through influence is equal or more than the merit quota schools like unizik, aau, delsu, oau, uniben, unilorin.
Schools with 60 %- 80%percent for merit quota in medicine and surgery are UNN and unilag.
Schools with 95 percent merit quota for medicine is UNIBADAN I.e ui.
Then lastly the fault lies with the candidates, some candidates don't know how to prepare for jamb and post jamb.
Some have not started preparation for next year jamb up to this moment that I am typing the article.
some are preparing with irrelevant materials and textbook

If u want to study medicine and enter hitch free without any delay in admission it is advisable u pick the University of Ibadan.
Their merit quota is very high it is like 95 percent.
A total of 109 students were selected on merit for medicine that was when the cutoff was 74 for mbbs.

After that the cutoff was further reduced to 72 though not official, 37 candidates were selected.
I knew a lot of guys who had 72 and 73 that were selected. These guys didn't use influence neither did they pay any dime they were just hoping onto God.
There are 147 newly admitted set of mbbs students and it is very certain that at least 130 students had above the cutoff .
There was a guy who scored 72 and he thought the admission board won't reduce the cutoff to 72 for medicine.
so he applied for change of course to physiology when the supplementary list came out he was admitted for medicine.
If anyone tell you that most Universities don't have a merit quota that person is lying.
In fact all Universities have a merit quota but the merit quota for most Universities is very small, some are not even up to 30 percent of the Class.
In the process u waste ur time, energy and money especially your time .
And one might suffer psychologically and the experience may be traumatizing leading to erosion of confidence and low self esteem
Some school will tell you that they are the best but go and check the merit quota for their top courses like medicine, law and accounting and compare it with those they admit through influence, lobbying and long legs.
You will see that those of influence far out numbers those on merit.
A year wasted is an opportunity wasted.
Don't say you were not informed.
So wise up.
You have no excuse for not studying medicine if that is your passion.
I repeat NO EXCUSE

did you read my Post? or did you actually interprete the post wrongly?

Oau and ui is actually different from unilorin, I have not seen a student that score up to the required marks and found his name wanting in any of the duo.

I meant unilorin not ui. For oau their merit quota is not up to 50 percent especially for medicine.
For unilorin it is not that they don't have merit quota but what it meant was that their merit quota is low.
In fact all schools has a merit quota. If anybody say that some schools Don't have merit quota that person is lying.
All tertiary institutions like unilorin has a merit quota but the criminals who we call admission officers deliberately reduce the merit quota in order to enable, their cronies, children, wards secure admission.
And that is a criminal act.
University of Ibadan has an high merit quota that why it is the best when it come to admission issue

sorry for the condition you found yourself.

There is a saying that success loves hardworking, but most tertiary instead in Nigeria have change the saying to "success don't really recognize your watery blood( sweat) but it will appreciate your cash"

If you are willing to do another course I will advise to choose UI and go for economics and maybe enrol for Ican because ui don't have accounting. I would have told you to choose Oau(accounting) but their academic calendar is slow.

If you really what to study accounting why not try any of unilag, unn or abu. These three skuls run a merit base admission but the condition to get in ain't easy
oau admission is not different from unilorin
U will see guys having low scores been admitted into their course of choice especially staff candidates and people with influence while in the same year u will see guys with high scores been given one useless course while some are not given anything.
Especially in their college of Medicine u will see people with low score there while some of the high scoring students will be dumped in departments of microbiology, botany, biochemistry and faculty of agriculture.
All because they don't know people.
Their merit quota is very small compare to the quota used for admitting people with influence
Education / Re: University Of Ibadan 2015/16 Applicants by Vcojuro: 5:37pm On Nov 27, 2015
Gone are those days when it is mandatory to have 5 distinction before u can secure medicine in the University of ibadan.
The new admission policy reckons with only post jamb.
That means the cutoff mark is derived from post utme score.
Let me use this year cutoff for the department of Medicine and surgery.
The cutoff for medicine for the 2015/2016 was 74.
Four friends Ade, bisi, femi, and niyi had utme score of 266,234,279 and 276 respectively.
Ade and bisi had seven distinction and two credit.
Femi and niyi one distinction each and eight credits.
Ade, bisi, femi, and niyi had post utme score of 63, 74, 69 and 76 respectively.
The cuttoff mark for mbbs was 74 and bisi and niyi were selected regardless of their utme score and olevel result.
A total of 109 students were selected on merit.
There is nothing like catchment or elds in ui

Education / Re: Nuc Proposed Seven Years Of Medical School : A Medical Student's Perspective by Vcojuro: 9:50am On Nov 08, 2015
I have observed the recent controversies and euphoria generated by the announcement of the new policy by NUC as regard medical education in Nigeria.
One thing that I came to realize about education in Nigeria is that the rot in the education system is as a result of corruption, myopic thinking, insincerity, ineffective policy making of our leaders especially those in the Helm of education affairs.
I don't see how 7 years in medical school will benefit a developing country like Nigeria where strike, lackadaisical attitudes of lecturers, poor facilities, outdated curriculum and other issues.
They should first address the issue of facilities, strike,, overcrowding, nepotism in the admission process before giving us seven years.
Who is deceiving who.
Is it the school authorities, NUC, or the Nigerian government.
Even though u are to teach a medical student for ten years, it is still nothing.
Why offering a nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist and other paramedics a chance to come back to mbbs where by such persons can contribute more to their respective fields of study.
To me it is like they are trying to kill those other fields after 70 percent Nobel laureate winners in medicine are not medical doctors.
If they are to admit other paramedics into the field of Medicine then we are looking at the collapse of Nigeria health sector.
If everybody were to be doctors then who will be the physiotherapist, nurse and medlab scientist.
Who will observe reaction of hormones in our body, the different metabolic pathways taking place in our body which is the work of the pharmacist and medical biochemist.
U can also see what the unnecessary struggle between doctors and johesu has done to the health sector and still some people are thinking of admitting johesu into mbbs.
You can see how ridiculous the whole thing is.
They should take heed or what they will see next is the collapse of our health sector

The average time to finish medical school in Nigeria from year 1 is 7 years. (ASUU, NMA, ARD, JOHESU strike inclusive)

Housemanship is compulsory to be eligible for the MBBS degree. In other words, you cannot have MBBS without housemanship. Totals - 8 it 9 years, depending on how fast you get a place to do housemanship.

You will go for youth service to be eligible for permanent registration.

Total - 9 or 10 years.

Let's now add 5 years (ASUU strike inclusive)of undergraduate education in Anatomy/Biochemistry/Physiology/Microbiology etc

We're not ready for such policies.

I for don finish school since May, now it's next year. Because we don't have an educational system that works. It doesn't breed maturity. You'll end up having frustrated doctors that have been wearied by unecessary length of training.
That is a great observation Dr Lomax.
Seriously you are an emblem of creative thinking and I want other people to emulate you in such a way but all of us can't think in the same manner.
Imagine you spending 6years in mbbs together with assu strike, nma, johesu, resident doctors, internal strike, housemanship that is no longer certain coupled with nysc.
One would have wasted a lot of years doing mbbs.
I don't see any difference between Nigeria mbbs and US MD. I have gone through their curriculum everything is almost these same just that they are more clinically exposed than us.
Our method of admission into mbbs follows the United Kingdom pattern.
And until the UK authority says otherwise then why should we complain.
Where I was expecting complaint was the issue of funding and the facilities in our teaching hospital.
To me as regard the issue of maturity of med students and ability of med students of nowadays to cope academically.
I still believe that the very issue tunnels down to our admission process.
I believe if we admit virtually all med students on merit.
When I mean merit I mean those who are academically found worthy, thoswho can take sleepless nights reading, lots of materials without complaining then I believe we will have a very competent, sound and mature med student who will pass through med school without repeating any level.
You see one of the solution to the problem in our med school is the merit system put it in place and other things will follow.
Like the Yoruba says "what you are looking for in Sokoto town lies in your Sokoto(pocket)"
That's my opinion.

can't u reason that out.
So am I to think for you.
Bring out the earlier list and juxtapose it with the later list. So you are trying to tell me that nobody can commit typo error right?.
God gave us a larger cerebrum in our brain to enable us to think.
So use it wisely.
Check out all the schools and quota in the former and latter list.
U will see they are virtually correct except for the minor mistake that was because I was typing hurriedly.
I get my facts correct quote me any where.
And mind you I am not those that will wake one morning and will start shouting that uniuyo and uniport are not accredited for medicine.
Try learning from doc Lomax. Doc lomax is a med student in uniuyo, and u will think he is a student of ui or unilag medicine.
I learnt something from him it is not about, the school one attend but one's mentality toward success.

You're biased in my opinion. I've noticed that utme candidates have a smoother medical school journey than those that have had a first degree. It doesn't mean they are immune from issues. First degree students usually feel they've seen it all. Believe me, that mentality is counterproductive. it's the same mentality repeat students have when repeating a class- seeing it all. And that's why they keep having issues.

Medical school training is enough to instill the foundation of maturity. It's not just about passing exams. Those that know, know.

Happy Sunday grin

Dr Lomax shows an high level of intelligence and maturity.
Nice observation doc.

Pls get your facts and figures screened well before you post next time abeg. We need someone who will give us real and authentic, up-to-date information here and not someone from a state of oblivion with sleepy eyes posting grandiose and vague things.
u this guy why do you like disturbing yourself and you call yourself an intellect.
I was a former oau student and oau students are known to be intellects when it come to arguing subject matters.
You should have reasoned that the mistake in my earlier post as regard the list was due to typo error in that of ebonyi state University.
You should have reasoned that out and call my attention to it.
And not shouting that it was a lie.
It was your lies that prompted me to post the list , imagine somebody saying that medicine in uniport, Niger Delta university, and some university in South South and southeast are not fully accredited.
I was wondering when you became MDCN.
Continue deceiving people.
As regard Lomax I thought he was in his finals because of the way he responds to questions and inquiries.
He was answering questions that even final year med students can not answer.
That shows his level of maturity and in depth knowledge about the field of Medicine.
So my advice for you is that you should think five times before commenting on any post or articles.

Good morning everybody.
I am hear to make some correction concerning the study of mbbs in Nigeria.
I have been observing some comments earlier on as regard accreditation and non accreditation of Universities.
I want to address that issue once and for all.
Mdcn regulates the practice of Medicine in Nigeria.
Only Mdcn can accredites University to offer mbbs course in Nigeria.
Gone are the days whereby any school will decide at any point in time to offer mbbs.
The process of accreditation of mbbs in Universities takes years if not more than 12 years as seen in benue state University in benue state.
The names of accredited Universities in Nigeria to study mbbs is listed on the mdcn website.
Those are the schools whose teaching hospital meets up to the required standard for the education of medical students.
Any school that is not accredited will not and can never be listed on mdcn websites.
Mdcn is always active in delisting any defaulting University as can be seen in the case of mdcn vs uniben
Where uniben lost its accreditation because it admitted more than its official quota for mbbs.
I was opportune to read Dr Lomax comment sometimes Last two years.
Then he was a medical student in his final year in the university of uyo.
He finished as an art student in 2006.
Taught himself biology chemistry and physics, gained admission the following year to study medicine and now he is a doctor.
So please stop all these arguments as regard whether a school is accredited or not because we are not mdcn and it is only Mdcn can decide whether a university is good enough for studying mbbs or not.

The practice of Medicine & dentistry in Nigeria is regulated by mdcn which has the final authority and say on anything that has to do with residency, horsemanship, even undergraduate admission into mbbs and bds.
Every medical schools in Nigeria have the same curriculum, no of academic weeks, same textbooks same method of setting exam.
It must adhere to these rules or it faces it's accreditation been invalidated.
It has been said generally that medicine at undergraduate level is "a Jack of all trade and master of none" hence the need for residency and specialization.
At your undergraduate level u are expected to have a basic understanding of the different fields that constitute the practice of Medicine.
Fields like obstetrics, gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, and lot of others.
Even it is said that fresh graduate of mbbs are still not reckon with when it come to medical practices until they undergo residency and fellowship.
So Concerning the issue of age, chances of employment, the school one finished from and the rest, medicine is a course where by age is not a limiting factor, it is in medical school that u find men old enough to be one's father still at the same level with you.
It is even noted now that in the United States a large no of medical schools likes to admit more of older students than the younger ones.
A research was carried out and it was found out that older students tends to be more focus, they exhibit a level of maturity and consistency.
They have more experience and tends to more friendly when it comes to patient care.
UI at one time was planning to introduce medicine as a direct entry course until it was discontinued
The school one finished from does not matter provided it is listed in mdcn accredited schools and in the WHO LIST OF UNIVERSITIES WITH MEDICAL SCHOOLS.
Lastly concerning the issue of graduates working in the north.
Despite the enormous population In the north there are lesser no of accredited medical schools hence shortage of medical personnel.
They have to make up for these deficit by employing graduates from Southern Universities.
People from Northern are mostly mostly Muslim and I think in Islamic practice male doctors are unlikely to treat female patients especially in the field of gynecology and obstetrics.
The field of mbbs has no age limit and the school u graduated from is not a limiting factor. I have seen a lot medical graduates from state Universities and northern universities working as a consultant and residents in federal Universities in South west Nigeria.
It is your primaries exam, Part1 exam , part 2 exam and residency program that will be used to judge you.
It is just similar to ICAN which does not care whether u finished from any University provided u are a chartered accountant.

@lagusta, please how is MBBS graded in the labour market....what factors aid your chances in the labour market....other doctors in the house can also help out.
medicine in the general sense is an unclassified course.
There is grading in medical school but In the general views of most people it is of no consequence and meaning.
There is nothing like first class doctor or second class doctor. A doctor is a doctor regardless of whether you finished with pass or distinction.
Regardless of whether you finished from any school in Nigeria provided it is accredited by mdcn which is the regulatory body for medical practice in Nigeria.

I can tell u that one Dean of clinical sciences in oau has 4 children currently in medicine in oau part 4.
All of them are at the same level which is 400 level.
None of them were on merit.
Why do you think I didn't quote their name.
Edit those name and use the required nairaland's username.

Mr man find a way of editing the surname and name u used.
Did u see me using anybody real name since we started this argument.

with all this your small talks, i begin to doubt if you were actually given medicine in UI.
You raised an issue regarding anatomy practical. It's students of your calibre that actually skips them.
Don't worry, when you finally get into UI properly, come back and tell us if you did attend all anatomy practicals in your part 2 days.
guy u have to keep quiet for once and stop jumping from one point to another.
The way u are talk I now know u are not in any of oau medical affiliated course.
May be u were are agric or any other course, I repeat I was once in the of medical rehabilitation dept in oau.
Now in UI mbbs.
Stay there and keep talking u will still see Vcojuro doing his internship and his residency.
Don't worry u might be referred to me who knows then we will continue our argument.

hehehe! I laugh in swahili.
Check out this examples.
1)Tunde Shotonwa was given Mbbs in UI, rejected it, now in Oau part
2)Joy Uzo, highest cgpa biochemistry, UI, now in OAU mb.chb.
3)Lanre Utopko, final year MBBS, UI, had to leave the school because he felt the standard was poor. Now in OAU mb.chb part 1. Can you imagine?

Rubbish.
Why wont you get 80% in UI's postume.
Is amoeba a living organism? A)yes B)no.
To CORRECT ALL YOUR POINT.
IT IS NOTED IN NIGERIA THE UI HAS THE BEST TRAINING FACILITIES IN TERM OF CLINICAL SCIENCES. IT IS REWARDS AS A REFERENCE POINT IN TRAINING DOCTERS IN WEST AFRICA.
IT HAS A LOT OF SPECIATIES IN MEDICINE NAME IT NEUROSURGERY PAEDIATRIC SURGERY, INTERNAL MEDICINE WITH STATE OF THE ART FACILITIES.
MANY INNOVATION AND BREAK THROUGH HAS BEEN RECORDED.
secondly when it comes ui post jamb ui undergraduate are not allow to partake in its post jamb.
U are not allow to matriculate twice.
The guy u said came from bch with first class did that because he would had been expelled if he took part in the exam.
The third guy Lanre upkoto u said came from part six mbbs and join oau mbbs shows that either u are lying or Lanre is lying.
U have to learn how to be a better liar.
Ui has a better clinical facility than oau every body knows that or are u a novice.
When I was in oau med rehab we use to envy what they were doing in UI to the extent that our anatomy lecturer will tell us that our facility is not enough.
There were times we go for three weeks without doing any anatomy practical.
If I am lying ask any student in medicine and med rehab
They will tell u that I am not lying.
And you call that medical school.
It got to a point some people refused to go to practical they will tell u it is no point coming.
And u call that medical school.
Our incourse that was set by the lectures was downloaded from online question bank.
It got to a point that what we were doing was downloading question banks from the Internet and made sure we solved everything hitherto because there were high chance they will repeat them.
And u called that medical school.
Bros from the earlier stated point as regard the first guy u mentioned I believe that to be untrue because ur premises on the second and the third guy was not true.
I repeat when I was in oau we looked at ui college of Medicine as been better than ours.
Ask anyone in the college of health sciences.
If u are not in oau health sciences don't argue because only students in oau health sciences will understand what I am saying.
