If you are a medical student and you are in any medical school outside oyo state. If you are interested in the business of supplying and selling medical books (preclinicals and clinicals) and medical equipments like BP machines, stethoscopes, dissecting sets, patella hammers, pen torches, gloves, nose mask in your respective med schools.

For those who didn't read my initial write up, posted above is a link to the write up.
This is the 2nd part in the series of write up.

Anatomy is the bulkiest of the preclinical courses and it involves the study of humans, cells and embryos. It is the course most medical students, tend to read all the time. it requires that you read it more often because it’s both voluminous and easy to forget.
For the anatomy I preferred the gross aspect of it because the rest of it, sort of look abstract to me. I also didn’t like nor dislike neuroanatomy though I was privileged to be taught this aspect of anatamy by prof T.M Shokunbi and other lecturerers (He together with prof malomo and others are Nigeria’s leading authority in the field of neurological surgery as neurosurgery is commonly referred to. T.M Shokunbi was the head of our anatomy department and malomo was the dean of clinical sciences. They hold joint appointments both as professors of anatomy and neurosurgery.)
I remember in the introductory lecture to neuro anatomy course, he asked if anyone wanted to pursue a career in the neurosciences, I think almost everyone raised their hands in affirmation. That he is very charismatic and exeptional is an understatement, he made everyone develop interest in the subject and neurosurgery as a whole. There were other lecturers who made our sojourn through the department worth the time and stress.
PHYSIOLOGY is considered to be the easiest of all basic medical sciences in preclinical school. What made it simple was not that it is less voluminous, as a matter of fact, physiology is as bulky as anatomy but it contains terms that can be easily remembered and its principle can be easily applied to every day health issues. For me surgery is basically a continuation of anatomy while medicine is a continuation of physiology. The testing pattern of physiology in Ibadan med school entails picking either a TRUE or FALSE answer for a single question. A wrong guess attracts a minus of 0.5mark while a correct answer attracts a plus of 1 mark. This rule is applicable for all mcq examinations in clinicals and preclinical schools (in clinicals it is higher than that, for example in hematology for instance any incorrect answer attracts a negative mark of). The first series of tests in physiology is written as MCQs(multiple choice questions) while the latter parts is written as essays .
BIOCHEMISTRY has been regarded for years by medical students as their achilles heel. For me I would say that it’s the least applicable of all the courses in basic medical sciences in clinical practice. It is very abstract and requires lot of cramming for you to be able to pass the course. Though Some find it interesting but a lot find it very difficult.
MEDICAL BIOSTATISTICS is another course that’s worthy of mention in the preclinical school, it involves the use of statistics and mathematics in solving everyday medical and health issues like collecting data for epidemics in a state or region.
A lot of emphasis is placed on practicals, clinical correlates and applications in the preclinical school. Each student is mandated to attend all practical sessions and be able to apply all principles to everyday practice.

A warm good morning to everyone on this thread, it’s been a while I last posted on this forum especially this thread. I wanted to give you guys an update of my journey so far, in medical school. Personally for me I’d love to give a day to day account of my sojourn but time won’t permit, as I have to squeeze time out of my schedule, to explain/pass one or more information I think might be useful. I won’t for once fail to appreciate the creator of this thread because it was from this thread, I had an overview of what “medicine” entails. This thread was a source of information and motivation, for I and other aspirants back then because the use of whatsapp wasn’t so much rampart, in fact there wasn’t any thread on the internet bringing together aspirants, medical students and graduates.

I am currently in my path and pharm posting and will soon be commencing, my surgery posting in a week time. My med school….. our med school is the college of medicine, university of ibadan (which most of you know is acclaimed to be the best. It’s called the real madrid of all medical school in west Africa but don’t mind my sense of humour, medicine is same everywhere in Nigeria).

SPOILER’S ALERT 1: If you think medicine is a course that you want to do so as to make quick money, please stay off because there are lot of stuff that you can do in order to earn such (entrepreneurship is chief among them).
I will be discussing my experience under the the following headings
Preclinicals
Clinicals
Extracurricular activities
Stress
Finances
Afterthoughts

Preclinicals: I won’t bore you with too much details because most of you, are already conversant with what is been taught in preclinicals. We were taught topics and principles in basic medical courses like anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. They are the foundations of the medical sciences because whatever that’s taught in preclinicals is definitely applicable to most aspect of medicine and everyday clinical practices.
The basic medical courses in Ibadan Med School include: Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Medical biostatistics. Those courses are further divided into several components, for example Anatomy is divided into : 1. Embryology
2. Histology
3. Gross anatomy
4. neuro anatomy.

Physiology and biochemistry also have topics and subtopics/subcomponents. Of all the courses in basic medical courses I am a bit more predisposed to anatomy (I kind of like something I could touch and see). There’s a lot to read, stuffs to cram, lot of assignments to work on. Passing through preclinical school could be a bit overwhelming and challenging, in fact it is always challenging for most medical students.

Hello everyone, I'm a 500 Level Medical Student University of Ilorin. After several years of writing UTME, my uncle introduced me to JUPEB an Advanced Level examination. I Finally got admission to study MBBS through JUPEB. There a lot of aspirants out there who still think UTME is the only way to gain admission. Do you know you can gain admission into 200 level to study medicine this year in any JUPEB affiliated University: Unilorin, UNN, Unilag, Uniben, OAU, e.t c. @ AODAC COLLEGE OF ADVANCED AND PRELIMINARY STUDIES. Stop wasting time at home! Don't let your dream of becoming a Medical doctor thwarted. It's never too late. For more enquiries contact: 08130614460

This post is kind of suspicious. Jupeb started effectively less than 4 years ago, so I am beginning to wonder where the author of this post got his information from .Jupeb centres are always located and hosted by universities unlike Cambridge Alevel

Nevertheless , Jupeb, Cambridge Alevel and ijmb are other means of securing admission into the University especially for medicine and dentistry.
It's time saving and alternative means of getting admission into medicine and dentistry undergraduate program.

The only con is that it's capital intensive i.e you tend to pay a lot for the program but i always tell people to go for what they want regardless of the cost, it pays later on.

Quality things don't come cheap. I have looked with dismay at the admission policies as regard DE applicants. University admission policies recently tend to favor those applying with Alevel certificate more than graduates of universities.

So if you are waiting to graduate from the University before applying for medicine, please weigh your decision over and over again

The question is "How did he get the Local government Identification Form because I know it's a requirement why applying for UNN post UME??.
I know of a friend who used Edo state instead of Ondo state while applying to Uniben and he was admitted.
If the person could get the Local govt Identification letter, he's good to go for the meantime.
It doesn't stop him from being a Doctor if he's able to go on with the acclaimed state of Origin..
He was not wise enough, he could have used River state that has some uniqueness with Igbos.
Rivers is also part of ELDS.
He should thread carefully because some certificates are revoked owing to falsification of credentials.
Something tells me you want to follow the same route but just be careful about it.
Integrity and honesty should be the motto of all medical students who are aspiring to be future doctors.
Medicine our noble profession is built on trustworthiness and good character.
Do you think doctors are respected for the mere fact that they are doctors and not nurses or engineers. They are respected by the society because of the good will and exemplary acts which they have shown to members of the society. Though there are some exemptions but hardly will you read in the newspapers and national dailies that a doctor intentionally killed any member of the society.
Medicine is not a guarantee that one will succeed, infact there are one thousand way of succeeding in this life without studying medicine. Any medical student will understand what I am saying.
Medicine as a profession is built on trust and any moment the society observes that we are deviating from the laid down principles, then believe me honestly medicine will no longer be a force to reckon with..............

The cut-off point for the departments in the college of Medicine has been decided today, it Will be out this evening or tomorrow morning. The board unanimously agreed to use 50-50 aggregate in deciding the cut-off point. What it means is that cut-off point for each departments is equal to jamb score divided by 8 plus post utme divided by 2.
It's quite unfortunate that the University of Ibadan has decided to discard the former admission policy which was based on post-utme scores only. I'll be bringing further information as regard the cut-off points this evening

For aspirants and those who are yet to make decision on whether to study medicine,

so far since my journey into medical, I won't say it's totally a smooth one. There are lots of up and down, the joy, happiness, the disappointments, stress and various challenges, I and my colleague encountered.
Medicine has a way of making you look like a mediocre(obviously most of us were the best in our former schools). Most of us were told stories about how students who were on 7.0 in their first year were sent packing out of medical schools. We were told disheartening stories about how people who after years of utme attempts were asked to withdraw because they couldn't cope.
We have heard lots of them, but we don't allow fear to conquer us, we have always offered word of encouragement to one another. We believe that since we have started the journey, we must finish it.
Some of you have various motivation for choosing medicine e.g prestige, job security, peer pressure, love for children, wealth, love for the sick and others but please make sure that your reasons or motivations for choosing medicine should be able to keep you motivated throughout your stay in med school because believe me med school is really tough if not extremely stressful, you spend 6 to 7years of your life reading, writing series of tests and participating in academic activities. You tend to have a reduced to zero social life, you are always glued to your books throughout the day. I can't count the number of sleepless night, You read through out the night till dawn, because there are loads of material to read, a medical student will understand what I mean.
Motivation keeps you fired throughout your stay in med school and makes you forget about the whole stress.
Also learn how to set goals and priorities as it will enable you to make good use of your time and ensure proper time management. Believe me, the greatest enemy of medical students is Time.

And to my esteemed colleagues i.e doctors in training, I salute your doggedness and your zeal to push on in face of adversaries. I respect all of you, especially those who braved all odds and make it this far despite all the fears and insult(I remember a certain lecturer telling my colleague in front of the whole class, that he had no brain and ought not to be med school)and "shoe size scores" .
Special gratitude to Dr lomaxx, I read some of his comments and observations, they were quite helpful.
Lastly I will tell you this, "no motivation is totally good or evil". Either your motivation is to acquire wealth, help others, job security or to treat the sick, it's definitely not evil or good but use your motivation to help humanity, by so doing you leave the world a better place than you met it.

These guys like deceiving us.
We asked for list of those admitted into medicine, meanwhile they are bringing the database showing the rankings of those who applied for medicine.

We are not stupid, what we are asking for is the final list of admitted candidates because that's where the real deal.
All schools have a database for admission policy and other process.
Even banks having a database of customers does not mean all the customers are loyal to them.

It's simple they should release the list of admitted candidates and their scores to show if they truly comply with NUC admission policy.

The picture that guy released is what we call "window dressing", just to shift attention from them.

Instead of them to release the admission list, they are releasing the data base of the admission process.

An analyst knows that database and admission list are two different things at odd with each other.

Even the database they released is not complete, they should have started from the candidate with the highest score to that of the lady, we will use their jamb reg no and cross check it, on jamb website to see their admission status.

They will not release the complete data base because if they do, you will see candidates with very low scores, those who are not in the first 500 on the list.

They should show us the final list of admitted students or complete data base of those who applied for MBBS (we will check on jamb website to cross check if their admission status correspond with their position on the data base)

The school authorities are learners , they should try and meet politicians, who can lie with ease.

@ Mr bashir

chairman publish the admission list of your school and I will believe you.
No need to argue, at least let everyone knows that your provost is saying the truth. We are in the information age.
We want to know if oau really comply with the admission rules and regulations.

University of Ibadan releases the name of every admitted students and jamb registration no, each year on their website and in newspapers.

So I can't see why oau is different, is the provost afraid of releasing the list, at least oau is a public institution, a federal one for that matter.

People are saying something about oau and yet the provost can't defend the integrity of the school by publish the admission list.

At least the young lady has come out and she uploaded her her results on the social media, the provost should do likewise and upload his own list simple.

Whenever the police is accusing you of a crime you didn't commit, then you bring forth your evidence that will exonerate you.

I am tired of hearing the provost said this, the provost said that, the provost is nice, the provost is that.

We need evidence to show that the girl didn't deserve a spot on the admission list.

The evidence is for someone to paste the list of admitted students in the department of Medicine and their respective score

Hi, it's possible if she is merit based..45% of the admitted 100 were merit based, meaning 45 people were admitted based on merit. If 56 scored higher than her, then she must be number 101th, which is higher than 103..Though I suspect the 103 might be correct due to approximations.

If you disagree, please post. This is serious.
merit in which school.
Go to their department and see those they admit for medicine, candidates with outrageous score like 220, 230, 228, 233.
They should disprove this by posting their admission list or is that too difficult for them.

Something I do not understand; she ranked 103 and 100 candidates were admitted... there are 56 other candidates ahead of her who didn't meet the cut-off mark. If 56 candidates scored below the cut-off and also beat her in aggregate scores, how come she missed the list by 3 steps (103-100=3)?
That's what I am talking about.
There are more than 50 people in her class who didn't meet up to the cutt off point and whose points are lower than hers.

Children of professors and staff are among this category.

I know oau students will come and argue that again.

Imagine that, their medicine department has a quota of 100, and they are just admitting a total of 30 students for merit, catchment and ELDS.

The remaining 70 students where did they come.

It's a fact that I know, ask any oau students in the faculty of sciences or in the college of health sciences.

If they argue that fact, then they should publish their medicine and surgery admission list for this year on their website or in the newspaper.

Let's see the no that was admitted under catchment, ELDS and merit.
At least they will justify themselves.

Let any oau student post a picture of Medicine admission list and I will agree with the provost.

My concern Is that the, remaining half of the class, did they deserve to be admitted before that young lady.

Do you know here in Europe, admission is easier and cheaper for EU citizens? Is that also corruption. The only way to beat them is to be extra good.
You said you don't have business with OAU, little wonder you think and talk the way you just did...purely on sentiments and pity for the lady.
I had my first and second degree from OAU and have been long in the university system to know how it runs.
I smh for you sir, you are indirectly telling me that a lady with 320 in utme And 70 plus as aggregate has nothing to offer oau compare to the a candidate that had 223 in utme And 66 in post utme.

This is coming from a nairalander with d Monika Adesegunfat

My name is Adesegun Fatusi, and I am the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, OAU, Ile-Ife. The case of the Aror Oghenerukewve has just been brought to my notice. To throw more light on her case, I will present the detaild fact here.

With a score of 320, her mark from UTME amounts to 80% (i.e. 320/400 x 100)
Her school cert results are: English A1 (=8 marks); Biology C4 (=5 marks); Chemistry B3 (=6 marks); Maths B3 (=6 marks); Physics C4 (=5 marks); Physics C4 (=5 marks); Further Maths B2 (=7marks), and Civic Educ A1 (=8 marks). That gives her 45 points, or 70.3% (i.e. 44/64x100)

So her overall average - as OAU did a combination of 50% mark from JAMB and 50% mark from School Cert - is: (80+70.3)=75.15% (which we rounded up to 75.2%).

With that mark, she ranks number 103 on the list of the students who took Medicine as first Choice.

The total admission quota for Medicine in OAU is 100, and that includes UTME and Direct Entry).

Clearly although Aror did well, her mark was NOT good enough to earn her admission on merit to read Medicine in Ife. Her mark of 75.2% is clearly below our cut-off mark (which was initially 78%, but we later reduced to 77.7%). Between her mark of 75.2% and 77.7%, by the way, there were 56 other candidates who scored higher than her but did not make the cut-off. For example, two people had 77.6%, two other people had 77.5%, four people had 77.4% etc.
Having presented the detailed facts about Aror's case, let me also help the many young Nigerians who may be accessing this site with more information on admission as I see a lot of misrepresentation, falsehood, and misunderstanding from the comments that various people had made on this case.

1. Admission into Nigerian Universities are considered on three grounds based on the nationally specified criteria (which I think ought to be reviewed now, by the way):
A. Merit =45% (This covers all candidates from the country - and it is automatic admission once you meet the cut-off mark)
B. Catchment = 35% (this refers to those in the states specified as catchment area for each University: For OAU, that is Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Osun and Ekiti)
C. Educationally disadvantaged states (ELDS)=20% = This refers to all the 19 Northern States, and Ebonyi, Rivers and Bayelsa.

So, someone from Delta such as Aror with 75.2% will not get admission into Medicine in OAU automatically as she is only considered on merit criterion and she does NOT meet the specified cut-off, but someone with the same mark from Kwara (which is in the North Central zone) may get automatic admission with the same mark based on the consideration of ELDS if 75.2% is the specified cut-off for ELDS for Medicine.

2. When a candidate chooses a highly competitive course like Medicine in a top-rated University like OAU, the competition is very intense. Believe it or not, many of the candidates that made our merit mark had an average of six A1s in school cert coupled with very high UTME mark (above 300). So, a candidate must carefully think over his choice of course and university. For example, if Aror had chosen ANY other course as her first choice for OAU, whe would have made the merit mark and gotten automatic admission, and she would have made the merit mark for Medicine on merit for most Nigerian universities too (but NOT OAU unfortunately).

3. Because of the high demand and competition for very limited spaces, the College of Health Sciences does not consider second choices as a general rule. OAU, for example, was only able to offer admission on UTME platform (Merit + Catchment + ELDS) to less than 3% of her applicants for Medicine, and less than 2% of her applicants for Nursing Science this year.

4. For cases like Aror where the candidadte has made a high mark but does not make the cut-off, what the candidate can sometimes do is to come to the University and try and see if he or she can be considered for other courses. A candidadte DOES NOT get considered automatically for a course she has not applied to in JAMB. A candidadte is ONLY automatically considered for the course he or she has applied for with respect to a particular university.

Unfortunately, Aror has left her case too late as all admission lists have been submitted for this year.

Smh there are lots of candidates that didn't meet up to the cutoff point for the department of Medicine, and yet they were admitted.
If you have any doubt go to the various department and check if the admission process is really transparent as they claim to be.
I will challenge the school management to paste the list of admitted students on daily newspapers and school websites.
That's how it's done in the University of Ibadan and this will give no room for manipulation.

Dapromzy333:
Check out the best Medical School in Nigeria now!

The Latest ranking of the best medical schools in Nigeria has recently been published. The list contain as expected the best universities in Nigeria.

Check out the list below:

5. University of Lagos

Popular medical school in Nigeria. Founded in 1962, University of Lagos (or Unilag) desired to prepare professionals for our newly independent Nigeria. With a focus on research, teaching staff published more than 1,700 articles, with the majority of the publications coming out of a few medical, scientific and engineering faculties. The University has recently become one of the seven institutions that received research grant share of the $ 1.2 million presented by the Lagos State Authorities. A huge part of it is going to financing and improving the medical school.

4. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU)

Ahmadu Bello University is extremely well-known for having devoted lecturers, real, adequate facilities and standard structures, which make it one of top 5 places to study different critical courses like, for example, Medicine. People usually do not want to go to North, but if you do, I bet, ABU has no competitor in Northern Nigeria, when it comes to any medical studies.

3. University of Ilorin

One of the best places in Nigeria to study medicine is University of Ilorin is because they have in general everything you need, and what is more interesting, they do not go on strike. So there is very near absolute concentration in the Nigerian education system there.

2. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)

OAU has a well-known medical college where plenty of critical diseases have been extremely successfully taken care of. It really makes sure the point of view that this is a great place to get appointed as a promising doctor in Nigeria.

1. Best medical school in Nigeria – University of Ibadan (UI)

At this moment, UI is yet in the list of top Nigerian schools to study medicine. This university is considered the best in Africa, as well as compared to a lot of other non-African countries. University of Ibadan has a close relationship with international institutions, including the Feinberg School of Northwestern University of Medicine in the USA, which sends its medical students to our UI’s teaching hospital. The main problem here is that a person needs to study and work extremely hard to make it to the list of admission, as there is often untold competition. Nigerian medical school is a great choice for everyone.

If you like, study medicine in Abu zaria, delsu or even the best medical school in Nigeria which is University of Ibadan (the statement is objective), medicine is medicine.

What I have observed as a medical student about medicine is that the best medical students most time aren't the best doctors.

The best doctors are mostly those who are compassionate and who tend to observe certain things in their environment(like someone that has a sixth sense, you know what I mean)

If you don't have those qualities, I am sorry to say that you might end up leaving the medical profession or not practicing at all because if you do, you might end up been frustrated.

If you think that because you are brilliant, that's why you must study medicine, then I will tell you that, you are in a wrong field.
