Family / How Do We Salvage The Downward Spiral Of Respect In Nigeria? by vickyO(f): 1:56pm On Oct 24, 2014 |
Respect in Nigeria revolves around two major things - How you address an older person and, - Your attitude towards them. HOW YOU ADDRESS AN OLDER PERSON Many Nigerians frown at the thought of a younger person addressing them by their first names as they believe it facilitates a familiarity that has no boundary. I've had a nine year old 'toddler' address me by my first name and it struck me as disrespectful cause it negates my perception of the Nigerian Culture. Or an I being too old fashioned. Should we salvage this tradition? If yes, how? Should we let it fade off? If yes, why? YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS THEM - OLDER PEOPLE Tons of contemporary youngsters are increasingly becoming rude and lack the sense of what's appropriate and what is not. Things like standing up for an older person to sit, greeting folk you meet at a place, keeping quiet when parents pour out their grievances, amongst many others are becoming less prevalent and its alarming - well to me. Should we take this seriously? What can we do to salvage our youth from this predicament? 1 Like |
