A former vice-president and a presidential aspirant on the platform of All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar and a national leader of APC and former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, held separate meetings with the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Friday.
The meetings were held at Obasanjo’s Hilltop presidential residence in Abeokuta.
With each spending not less than one hour with the former president, it was obvious their visits were not unconnected with the 2015 elections.
Tinubu had paid such a visit earlier in October to Obasanjo, where he said he had come to discuss the state of the nation and his advice on the choice of presidential candidate for the party.
However, on this visit, Tinubu did not grant any press interviews as his convoy drove out of the Obasanjo’s residence around 12.30pm.
Two hours after his departure, Atiku, who had earlier paid a visit to the governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, arrived in a convoy, and drove into the former president’s compound.
Briskly he moved into the inner chamber of the building. After a closed -door meeting which lasted for about 45 minutes, he emerged from the chamber with his host, and went to another wing of the building where they had lunch.
He later emerged after 20 minutes and told journalists that he had come to pay respect to his former boss and also discuss the developments in the country with him.

The Maasai in Kenya and Tanzania —
Female Genital Mutilation:

circumcising their women just to prevent
them from engaging in sex until they are
married. This practice , as justified by some of
the Maasai elders , is more important in the
Maasai culture as it helps in controlling
women libido. As a result , a maasai woman

perform a ritual that involves covering his

Hamer tribe in South - western Ethiopia

This may be seen as a difficult thing to
happen in the current world, but to Hamer
women from the South - western Ethiopia it ’ s
more like a normal phase of life . The worst
part is that before you can be allowed to
engage in this ritual ( bull jumping ritual) ,
you’ ll first have to go through a series of
whipping on both the back and buttocks until
there are some scars that will signify that
you’ ve already gone through the ritual and
you’ re now a grown woman who is very
ready for marriage . A Hammer man , on the
other hand , can marry up- to four women and
in case he dies , then all his properties will
be equally distributed amongst the wives but
not the children.

The Zulu tribes in South Africa —
circumcision rites:

Zulu teenage boys have to undergo a bizarre
circumcision rite to become men . Normally in
Zulu , these boys will be abducted and then
taken to a secret place that can only be
accessed by elderly women who bring them
food and drinks. They are then covered in
white dust before being allowed to use sharp
blades or rocks to circumcise themselves . As
a result , most of them generally end up
having disfigured genitals; and some even die
during the process . The wounds are normally
treated and dressed using mad or animal
waste , and may take up- to four months
before these boys are completely healed .

The Hausa tribes in Nigeria — Bloody
boxing:

The Saharan Hausa people have their own
traditional boxing practice that they call
Dambe. This sport, though considered illegal ,
is still practiced by some people and it
generally involves using feet, head and fist to
hit an opponent. They also use a Dambe
Karfe ( a hand held puncing ) or a mazagi ( a
fist layer with protruding pieces of glasses) to
pound on their enemies . Even though it may
seem like a dangerous game , some Hausa
people still enjoy this sport and will even pay
to watch or participate in it .

The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, and the pan-Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, have reacted to President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration to seek re-election.

The groups told our correspondent that the President was within his rights to seek re-election.

Jonathan was criticised by the opposition, All Progressives Congress, and some Nigerians for going on with the lavish declaration barely 24 hours after a suicide bomber killed over 40 schoolchildren and teachers at the Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum, Yobe State.

The Afenifere, in its reaction said there was nothing wrong with the President’s declaration, saying that the date had been fixed before the Yobe attack.

The spokesperson for the Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, told our correspondent that postponing the event would have meant succumbing to the wishes of terrorists, which would not be in the interest of the nation.

He said, “Some reactions to the declaration suggest that the bombing was deliberately planned to abort the declaration. The time has come when these merchants of terror who wants to use terror to access power to be told in clear terms that nobody should use terror to make the entire country to submit to their will. It’s unfortunate that the lives were lost.

“For us in Afenifere, we believe that to end the terror, you must allow the country run while you track down the perpetrators of these evil. But to begin to succumb to their threats and their dictates would amount to chickening out as a nation and abandoning our fate in the hands of the terrorists.”

Odumakin added that Jonathan has a right to seek re-election and asked those who are opposed that to show why and how they would do better as President.

Similarly, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said Nigerians should challenge the President on the achievements of his administration and not on whether or not he should declare his intention after a bomb attack.

The spokesperson for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Tony Oganah, told our correspondent that the group had noted that the Boko Haram attacks were often planned to put the PDP and Jonathan in bad light.

He said, “Jonathan’s declaration was okay. It was within his right to do that. We don’t see anything wrong with it. Are they saying that because Boko Haram killed students in the North that Nigeria should grind to a halt? It is the argument of the All Progressives Congress that it should have been postponed. But another point of view is why is it that anytime the PDP plans a major event, a day or two before the event, bomb goes off somewhere. Is this deliberately done to portray the PDP and the President in bad light?

“We sympathise with those who were affected by what happened up North. But because of what happened are you telling me that nobody had breakfast today; nobody went to work today; nobody drove his car today? Tragedies are part of life and the country must go on. INEC has brought out a timetable which the President and the PDP must follow.

“I think it would be more profitable to look at the substance of the President said and find out it is true. For example, Mr. President said when he came in there were only about 5000km of federal roads that were tarred, but today it is 29,000km. Nigeria should check what he said to see if they are true. It would be more profitable to take on Mr. President on specifics rather than the generality. This is the position of Ohanaeze.”

Some members of the All Progressives Congress in the House of Representatives have launched a powerful drive for the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, to emerge as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress.
Investigations byThe PUNCHon Thursday revealed that the members took it upon themselves to purchase the APC presidential nomination form for Tambuwal, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party for the nation’s main opposition party.
Attempts by the APC to pick a presidential candidate by consensus had failed after talks between the stakeholders reportedly collapsed on Wednesday.
The contest was initially between a former Head of State, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd); a former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar; Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha.
But,The PUNCHlearnt that the “entry” of Tambuwal into the race had further compounded the situation in the APC.
Investigations showed that the lawmakers had reasoned that Tambuwal was a “poor speaker,” who would not afford the N27m the APC fixed as the cost of the form and had therefore opted to buy it for him.
The chairman of a very influential committee in the House and an associate of the speaker, confided inThe PUNCHin Abuja on Thursday that the APC lawmakers agreed to foot the bill for the speaker’s nomination form.
He said, “Yes, I can confirm to you that the process is on. You know, he is one of the poorest speakers. He has no financial dealings and cannot raise the money.”
Asked how much each member contributed to the project, the source replied that “it was by voluntary contribution.”
Tambuwal could not be reached as of press time, but his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Imam Imam, did not deny his boss’s presidential interest.
He claimed that some “associates” of the speaker notified him on Thursday morning (yesterday) that they had bought the form for him.
Imam stated, “Earlier today(Thursday), some friends and political associates of the speaker notified him that they had bought the presidential nomination form for him.”
He did not give details of the associates and friends.
When contacted, the leader of the APC caucus, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, confirmed that there was indeed a presidential nomination form in the hands of Tambuwal.
He explained that the form was procured by lawmakers, who had put Tambuwal under “tremendous pressure” to run for the Presidency.
He added that apart from the lawmakers, “there are other associates too who want the speaker to vie for the Presidency.”
However, Gbajabiamila clarified that he could not confirm whether the speaker would run or not.
“I don’t know if he has accepted, but I know that members put him under tremendous pressure and they bought the form for him”, he stated.
When contacted, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,
said, “As of this moment, Rt. Hon. Tambuwal, has not obtained a form.”
Tambuwal has had a lengthy romance with the opposition since he became speaker on June 6, 2011 before he finally defected to the APC on October 28.
Initially, he was touted to be the preferred presidential candidate of the APC.
However, the entry of Buhari, Atiku and Kwankwaso into the race, slowed down his interest.
An option ‘B’ that was canvassed shortly before his defection was that he would vie for the governorship seat in Sokoto State next year.
Further investigation showed that some of the factors considered by the legislators pushing for Tambuwal included age, liberality, financial muscle of fellow legislators and their political following. A competent source within the APC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that the party was looking forward to a candidate that would appeal to the younger generation of voters across the country.
The source said, “The majority of those who are going to vote in the general election next year have never voted before. They don’t know the political myths that some of us know.
“Tambuwal is seen as less controversial and ‘stainless’. He was more of APC than the PDP from day one of his speakership. He wants to be governor but thee legislators want him to be president.
“With the powerful lobby, the leadership of the party might have no choice but to support Tambuwal because the financial strength of the legislators must be put into consideration.
“If each of the legislators donates N10m, that is a lot of money. Younger elements in the House want Tambuwal. The leadership of the party cannot totally wish away the demand of the lawmakers.”
Another source said that the South-West would determine the aspirant that would pick the party’s presidential ticket.
He said, “The aspirants will share the votes in the North because they are all from the North, where they have their bases. It is only the South-West that would provide block votes for any aspirant that the South-West supports. It is who Asiwaju Bola Tinubu tells the party to support in the South-West that we shall support. Other zones of the country are contesting. It is only the South-West that is not contesting. So, the South-West is the beautiful bride.”
Meanwhile, the APC and the All Progressive Grand Alliance has condemned the distribution of the permanent voter cards and the ongoing voter registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The leaders of the party in Lagos State said they suspected foul play in the way the exercise had been carried out.
The Publicity Secretary of the APC in Lagos, Joe Igbokwe, said , “Every four years, INEC knows that there would be elections. After finishing an election, they ought to be planning the next one.
“We have looked at it and we are asking: is it lack of personnel? Is it lack of fund? Is it lack of capacity? Or what is it that they cannot do a normal job the normal way. They said they registered 6.4 million voters in 2011 and it went down by 1.4 million and they have not given any explanation that does not hold water. You still have people who have turned 18, who need to vote next year.
“This is happening in all APC states: Edo, Rivers, Ogun states and so on. We are still asking: what happens to 1.4million voters whose names are missing from the register? They have not given any acceptable explanation for that reduction.”
Igbokwe said the APC suspected that the flawed voter registration process might be part of the alleged plan by the PDP to rig elections in 2015.
He said, “You can start rigging election from the source. All you need to do is to remove some names especially in the APC stronghold. It may not be the problem with Chairman of INEC, Attahiru Jega. It may be the staff of INEC that may be doing this. They can yank off some names from the computer and sell it to the opposition. That is our fear.
“We don’t control INEC; we don’t control the Police; we don’t control the Army. INEC is still being paid by the Federal Government. So it is a branch of the Federal Government. It is an agency of the Federal Government. It is not independent. The only way we can solve this problem is to go back to Uwais report.”
The Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of APGA, Campbell Umeh-Nzekwe, also condemned the exercise, saying they suspected foul play.
Umeh-Nzekwe said, “This issue of voter registration is no longer new to Nigeria. I don’t know why it has become an issue, that it cannot be done. It is the same Jega who gave us hope in 2010, when he was appointed as INEC chairman. Four years is enough for a professor of political science to know that the voter registration is the root of any democratic set-up.
“Voting will commence in about two months. After registration, you have about 30 days to display the voter register for people to verify and crosscheck. We in APGA are asking Jega not to allow sentiments to divert his attention from the main issue. This is the dying minutes of the game and they are giving excuse.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter on Thursday described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a party of cowards whose leaders have become hypertensive due to fear of the PDP taking over governance of the state in 2015.
Spokesman of the party, Taofik Gani, said it was surprised that “the APC, whose leaders do not have regards for party members have agreed, following public outcry to conduct a primary election where the governorship candidate of the party would emerge.
It said unlike the despotic rule in APC, the PDP has been subjecting all aspirants from the position of president to councillors to free, fair and credible primaries where the members are given the choice to select their preferred candidates.
The PDP said the party’s action has clearly shown to Lagosians that Tinubu’s influence is waning on a daily basis. His words are no longer law which will be obeyed without thinking. Lagosians are now wiser and are ready to break free of the bondage they have been subjected to by Tinubu and his cronies for the past 16 years”.
“PDP is the truly democratic party. The APC is peopled by pseudo-democrats who take pleasure in lording it over their members. That they have agreed to jettison the idea of fielding the candidate of the emperor and subjecting their aspirants to primaries shows they are jittery”.
“They are jittery of the fact that their members will reject the dictatorship and pitch their tent with the truly democratic party, PDP. They are scared that the aggrieved aspirants will team up with the PDP to dislodge them from office.
“If they are confident that the PDP is no threat, why can’t they go ahead and impose their preferred candidate on Lagosians and see if it will not have repercussions,” the party asked.

The three senators from Ogun state on Wednesday presented their letters of defection from the All Progressives Congress to the Social Democratic Party, to the Senate President, David Mark.
The senators Messrs Adegbenga Kaka ( Ogun East ), Akin Odunsi (Ogun West), and Gbenga Obadara, in their separate letters, attributed their action to the fractionalisation of the APC in the state, which had led to the formation of two parallel executives.
Addressing journalists on behalf of his colleagues in Abuja on Wednesday, Kaka, who is the Chairman of the Ogun State lawmakers in the National Assembly, explained that seven out of the nine House of Representatives members from the state have also submitted their letters of defection.
Kaka said, “This is to formally inform you and the general public that we, the three Senators representing Ogun State, have just delivered our letters to the leadership of the Senate, notifying him of our resignation from APC and declaring for the SDP.
“This was consequent upon the fractionalisation in the party (APC in Ogun State) leading to the emergence of parallel executives from wards, local government areas to state levels.
“All our protests, appeals and demands for justice from the national leadership yielded no result. Rather, the faction that flagrantly flouted the party guidelines was given recognition by the National Executive.
“We subsequently did not partake in the national convention, as we rightly believe in the legal aphorism that, ‘you cannot build something on noting and expect it to stand.’
“We are therefore left with no option than to withdraw their membership of the APC after due consultations with their constituents.”
He said that from the registration of the APC, the situation in Ogun State was greeted with series of crises and since they saw that the marriage cannot work, their constituents demanded that they should pull out of the arrangement.
“Enough is enough, there is no force marriage anywhere. Since it could not work, we have resolved to part ways with them and we believe that where there is no justice, there is no peace and unity” he added.
The senators also threw their weight behind the action of the Deputy Governor of the state, Prince Segun Adesegun, who also dumped the APC for SDP, but refused to vacate his seat.

The governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and the state chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Chief Olu Agemo and the party’s senator representing Ogun Central at the National Assembly, Gbenga Obadara on Wednesday clashed over the alleged removal of the billboards belonging to the party by the Ogun State Signages and Advertising Agency.

The billboards belonging to the party erected at different strategic points in the state on Sunday were pulled down on Tuesday by men from the agency.

Our correspondent gathered that one of the billboards erected at Sagamu end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, was removed.

Another one in Pakoto area of Sango-Ota also suffered the same fate.

In a swift reaction, the state chairman of SDP frowned at the removal and described it as ‘politically motivated.’

He said the outdoor agency which they gave the contract must have paid the necessary fees before erecting the billboards, and he faulted the removal.

Agemo who spoke with journalists at the Sagamu interchange site of the billboard said the party would investigate the matter.

“The Billboards were mounted on Sunday. We know that we have paid the contractors who might have paid for the signage and so, it’s surprising yesterday to find out that the billboards have been removed. This is unfortunate and we think seriously that it must have been politically motivated because at least there must be about seven days grace for whoever mounts such a thing to go and pay for signage. So, that is the thinking of the party.”

Obadara also said the state governor and his agents have started unleashing terror on the people ahead of 2015 elections.

However, the commissioner of information and strategy, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, and the General Manager, OGSAA, Mr. Akinlabi Bamidele, said the agency who erected the billboards had breached some rules by the failure to pay the stipulated fee within a time frame.

He also faulted the claim that the action was politically motivated, adding that the agency had informed all outdoor advertising agencies on the new billing system since July that the old policy of seven days grace for payment had been cancelled.

It would be recalled that many loyalists of Chief Olusegun Osoba had recently defected to the SDP.

No fewer than 12 people were injured and about eight vehicles were vandalised on Thursday as supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party clashed in Nasarawa State.
The incident, which started at the APC secretariat, occurred at about 1pm.
Trouble started when one of the vehicles on Alhaji Yusus Agabis’ convoy, one of the governorship aspirants in the state, who was on his way to the PDP secretariat, was allegedly attacked.
This was said to have angered some PDP supporters, who vowed to attack the APC.
The supporters reportedly pounced on a vehicle belonging to the APC, leading to a free-for-all, in which several people were injured and eight vehicles were vandalised.
The situation led to a heavy traffic on the Jos-Makurdi road, leaving commuters, travelling through Lafia to Makurdi, Enugu,Kano, Kaduna and Federal Capital Territory, stranded for hours.

10. Has electricity been privatized in Nigeria, and are you now noticing slight improvements in power? Do you honestly believe that new private investors in power sector can solve a 35year old rotten system in just a few months?

11. Do you know that Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) now acknowledges that Nigeria's manufacturing capacity has grown tremendously in recent years?

12. Did you know that Nollywood movies like 'Doctor Bello' and several others were funded with special media/creative industry loans provided by GEJ's government via Bank of industry?

13. Has contract been awarded and construction work started on the second Niger bridge?

14. If you live around Abuja/Kaduna axis, have you noticed a newly constructed ultra-modern standard guage railway line linking Abuja and Kaduna?

15. Can any government truly find easy solutions aimed at stoping multitudes of religious fanatical citizens that have embraced death and are ready to take others with them?
