I Read In Hunger And In Tears —UDUS First Class Graduate By Promise Eze Somide Samuel O. from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto graduated with a first class CGPA of 4.56 in chemistry this year. But his journey to success was not a smooth ride. Though the road to success was dented with challenges and many daunting experience he was able to pull through and finish with flying colours. This reporter follows his heart touching story. Somide Samuel O. hails from Ogun state though born and bred in Abeokuta. He is the Last born of a family of four. However tragedy struck when he lost his Dad in 2009. "I lost my Dad exactly 10 years ago. Growing up without him was indeed hard for us. My Mom who now became the bread winner struggled to send me to school by managing a petty trade that couldn't even yield a profit of One-thousand Naira per day," he says. Somide never achieved any special feat during his junior secondary school days. In fact he remembers that he was only an average student —one "between the best and the worst." He took his studies seriously in senior secondary only after his elder brother forced him to read his books and denied him the privilege of participating in outdoor activities. It was then that he was able to clinch the position of a prefect. "Due to my poor background I couldn't afford good uniforms," he recalls. "It was hard maintaining the one I had that even if it tore I would wear it for almost a term. But I never for once felt intimidated." Young Somide borrowed money from a professor in his church to sit for GCE in SS2. However having a D7 in English Language, he had to resit for WAEC the following year. His mother couldn't afford to register him for JAMB so he resorted to begging for funds. "I had no choice but to go back to Prof. He gave me the money and I registered. I chose Usmanu Danfodiyo University as my first choice and opted for Medicine and Surgery," he tells. Later on he left home to join his brother who resided in Sokoto. His elder brother, a soldier, was serving under the 26 battalion. It was he who had broach the idea of Somide schooling in UDUS. With a Jamb score of 216 he was granted admission. But to his dismay it wasn't the course he had applied for. From the Medicine and Surgery he hoped to read, he was catapulted into the department of chemistry. But Somide says he had to accept it because that could be where his destiny lies. "I never wanted to study chemistry. I wanted to be a doctor. However, chemistry was my best subject back then in Secondary school. I had to accept the course. Intuitively, I knew it was a destiny call." His school fees were covered by his brother. Somide who couldn't secure a hostel space had to join the league of squatters. At first, he had a friend who decided share space with him but they fell out subsequently. "He sent me packing because I kept pestering him to read his books," Somide remembers. His amiable personality attracted a lot of people who came to him for tutorials. After a short while he became the class representative of his department. "I came into UDUS with just four T-shirts, two blue Jeans and one brown chinox. That's all I had to wear for three months. I read in hunger and in tears," he recollects the painful moments. He was forced to join the 'cooler ministry' due to the hunger that besieged his stomach. He had no choice but to tutor ladies in exchange for food. Nobody knew how he fed except his best friend, Mubarak. First year came rounding off abruptly and sadly for Somide who targeted first class in hundred level, his grade was a big disappointment: 4.48. A 4.48 is enough to make any first year student gyrate buy Somide wasn't satisfied. So in 200-level he embarked on trimming the number of friends he kept, avoiding some lackadaisical persons who came to him for private tutorials and gravitating towards serious minded individuals. It was then he met Usman and Faruq. "Those two change my life for good. They were both zealous and focused, and we challenge each other academically, read together, visited the library often and watched educative videos on YouTube. So I was at my best. I read so hard and I made a GP of 4.8 in the first semester. But faruq had 5.0. That challenged me to study harder. In the second semester 200-Level I had a cumulative CGPA of 4.57. A first class," he remembers. He was impeached from his position as class rep even before he resumed 300-level for reasons he couldn't figure out. But the incidence didn't distract him from being focused. At the end of 300-level his CGPA read 4.65. Somide who was enamored with his achievements didn't envisage that trouble was lurking in 400-level. He was denied the chance in finishing an exam. He lost his ID card two days before a particular exam and despite getting a police report, a court affairs affidavit and a security clearance as stipulated by the constitution of the university his answer sheet was dragged from his hands inside the hall. This affected him psychologically but he was able to return to sanity. Speaking on how he was able to remain focused until he graduated, he stated that he shunned romantic relationships and fixed his hope on God. "I never had a girlfriend. You know this love of a thing made my best female friend in school ended up in second class upper all the way from first class. All my friends who made first class never had time for girls," he notes. Unlike some students who would pore over their notebooks from dusk to dawn, Somide was never a fan of studying throughout the night. "I tried it once and I ended up in the clinic," he says. For those who are not finding life easy in campus young Somide ends his story with some words of encouragement. "God knows what you are going through. You should never give up," he concludes. The attack comes on the heels of a series of troubling fire accidents that have hit the electoral umpire of late. Men dressed in military uniform attacked officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benue State just days to the Presidential and National Assembly elections. While addressing the media on Thursday, February 14, 2019, the state's Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Nentawe Yilwatda , said the attack on the commission's vehicle happened late on Wednesday, February 13. He said the vehicle was transporting non-sensitive materials ahead of the highly-anticipated elections on Saturday, February 16. "Recently, our vehicle which was conveying non sensitive materials was attacked along Logo area by people in military uniform," he said. The attack comes on the heels of a series of troubling fire incidents that have hit the electoral umpire of late. The commission lost 4,695 smart card readers in a fire that destroyed two containers filled with election materials at its Anambra State head office on Tuesday, February 12. It was the third INEC office to be torched by fire in 10 days after the ones in Isiala Ngwa LGA in Abia State on Saturday, February 2 and Qua'an Pan local government area of Plateau State on Saturday, February 9. According to a statement signed by INEC's National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye , on Monday, February 11, the commission has requested additional security measures to enhance security around INEC offices and other critical structures of the commission. "The commission wishes to assure all Nigerians that it will not succumb to the antics of arsonists whose motive might be to create fear in the minds of voters and sabotage the conduct of the 2019 general elections," he said. Muhammadu Buhari was born on December 17, 1942 in Daura, Katsina State. His father was Hardo Adamu and his mother Zulaihat. He is the 23rd child of his father. MILITARY CAREER Buhari enrolled in the Nigerian Military Training College in 1962 (NMTC). NMTC would later be upgraded to an officer commissioning unit of the Nigerian Army and renamed Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). He served as commander of the Secondary Infantry Battalion and appointed brigade major, second Sector, First Infantry Division from April 1967 to July 1967. He participated in the Nigerian Civil War that last for almost three years (1967-1970) Buhari Served as Governor of the North-Eastern State from 1975 to 1976. In March 1976, Head of State, General Olusegun Obasanjo appointed Buhari as the Federal Commissioner (position now called Minister) for Petroleum and Natural Resources. When the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation was created in 1977 Buhari was also made its Chairman, a position he held until 1978. It is on record that during his tenure as Commissioner, $2.8 billion allegedly went missing from the accounts of the NNPC in Midlands banks in the United Kingdom. In December 1983 he led a coup that ousted the democratically elected President Shehu Shagari from office. Barely two years after, his regime was ended through coup by Ibrahim Babangida POLITICAL ANTECEDENTS With the return of Nigeria to civilian rule in 1999, Buhari contested for the presidency in 2007 on the platform of All Nigerians Peoples Party (ANPP) and came second with 12,710,022 as against the winner Umaru Yar’Adua’s 24,456,140 votes. He founded the Congress for Progress Change (CPC) in the build-up to the 2011 elections and he contested on the platform of the party again for the President. He was defeated again, this time by Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He re-contested in 2015 for the same post on the platform of a coalition party called All Progressives Party (APC) and he won. His victory made him the first candidate in the history of the country to defeat an incumbent President. STRENGTHS The North-West is his stronghold. Though Buhari is an influential politician with cult following in the North, his influence is strongest in the Nort-West. Buhari is from Daura Katsina State, which is in the north-west geopolitical zone. He always banks on the votes from this region. Even in the past when he lost to other contenders, Buhari polled massive votes from this region. Official figures from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show that the region has the highest number of registered voters for the 2019 general election. The North-West has 20,158,100 registered voters, making up 24% of the total number of registered voters, which is 84,004,084. Buhari will be hoping to win a considerable number of votes from here again. Kano, which falls in the north-west region, alone has 5.5 million registered voters. There is the Lagos State/ Tinubu factor. Buhari’s running mate, Yemi Osinbajo is from the South-West. He was donated to the Buhari administration by his political godfather Bola Tinubu, who calls the shots in Lagos and is a staunch loyalist of the sitting President; he will do anything to ‘mop up’ the chunk of the 6.6 million expected votes from the state. Lagos, according to the numbers released by INEC, has the highest number of registered voters in the country. There is also the Akpabio factor in the South-South. Godswil Akpabio, the former Governor of Akwa-Ibom State who recently defected to the APC, will want to prove a point to his new party and teach his former party, especially sitting Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, some lessons in politics. He will do anything to win Akwa-Ibom State for Buhari. He also has an ally in Adams Oshimohole; together they will face Nyesom Wike of Rivers and others from the region. The Trader Moni is another. It was tagged as Federal Government Empowerment Scheme for petty traders and artisans, but it is believed in some quarters to be a vote- buying ploy that might I truth sway some of these petty traders to vote for the APC. WEAKNESSES The explosion of the integrity myth. Buhari rode to power in 2015 on the wave of a decent personality and impregnable integrity. Recent decisions taken by him at the helm of affairs have shown otherwise, thus putting the lie to Buhari’s 2015 selling point. Many will claim to have known him for who he truly is, but he may lose a massive number of votes for some the decisions he has taken in office. Vote drought in the North-East. Buhari, who used garner a considerable number of votes from the North, might find it very hard to win in the northeast this time for two reasons. First their son, the Waziri of Adamawa, Atiku Abubakar, is also vying for the same post they used to support him for. Second, the menace of insurgency ravaging the region and which he promised to put an end too is still as disturbing as before. The North-Central could revolt with their votes. With the incessant clash between farmers and cattle herders, Benue and some other states in the North-Central have become abattoirs of sorts, with the President showing little or no readiness to find lasting solution to the problem. Some will even say he has been tacitly supporting the herdsmen. This is also the region of David Mark, Bukola Saraki and Samuel Ortom. Winning in the zone will be a herculean task for the sitting President. Selective anti-corruption war. Buhari has been fighting corruption by attacking the opposition. A villain becomes a saint regardless of the evidence against him once he defects to the ruling party. This method of fighting corruption has incurred the resentment of not a few number of the electorate and they may pass their vote of no confidence on him by voting him out of power come February 16. Age and health status. Buhari is now over 76 years of age and every evidence shows that he is going senile. From forgetting the day he was sworn in as President to calling a governorship candidate a presidential and later ‘governortorial’ candidate, even slipping occasionally, the President has shown beyond doubt that he is not physically fit to retain the office. Don’t forget that Mr. President had once spent a total 172 days outside the shores of the country seeking medical recourse for an unknown ailment. Many believe the President is senile and needs some rest and they may vote against him. Clannishness and nepotism. Most of the appointments made so far by the President have not been based on merit but on ethnic and other primordial considerations. Most of these appointments have gone to northerners. Votes from other zones may show their disenchantment with him by voting him out. Source: http://saharareporters.com/2019/02/14/preview-has-incumbent-buhari-done-enough-earn-another-four-years

Senator Kabiru Marafa says the effect of the judgements from the two appeal courts in Abuja and Sokoto is that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has no candidates in Zamfara state. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had barred the APC from fielding candidates for the March 2, 2019, governorship polls over the party's failure to conduct primary election in Zamfara state. "We are back to status quo, that is, no candidates for APC in Zamfara," said Marafa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) . "Contrary to the erroneous information being peddled by some uninformed persons, the Court of Appeal in sokoto didn't clear APC candidates in Zamfara. "In the sokoto division, the Court of Appeal refused to entertain the motion filled by Yari's counsel seeking the enforcement of the judgement of the Zamfara high court. "The motion for the enforcement was rested on the appeal filled by Rep Sani Jaji and since the appeal was withdrawn the motion collapsed with it and was therefore dismissed. "In the Abuja division, a similar motion seeking stay of execution filled by Yari counsel was withdrawn by the counsel himself, who also admitted in the open court that the motion ought not to have been filed because Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu did not give any order that can be stayed she simply commended INEC and maintain that it (INEC) acted within its powers and that APC failed to prove its case that it conducted primaries in zamfara. She thereafter dismissed the case. Consequently, the Appeal court struck out the motion "The motions, having failed in both divisions of the court in the same day, it is very clear that we are back to square one. There is no APC candidate in Zamfara state," Marafa insisted. source: https://www.pulse.ng/news/politics/marafa-says-theres-no-apc-governorship-candidate-in-zamfara-state/pyr4qq3.amp

Chadwick Boseman, left, gives his best hero award for his role in ‘Black Panther’ to James Shaw Jr. at the MTV Movie and TV Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. Photo Credit:AP Superhero movie “Black Panther’ made a killing at the MTV Movie & TV Awards winning four trophies. Black Panther,” the predominantly black movie that has taken more than $1.3 billion at the global box-office, won best movie, best villain for Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger, and best performance and hero for star Chadwick Boseman. Boseman, who plays the leader of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, gave his trophy to a man with no Hollywood connections on Monday. “An award for best hero is amazing but it’s even greater to acknowledge the heroes we have in real life,” said Boseman. He brought on stage James Shaw Jr., a 29-year-old electrician who overpowered a gunman who killed four people at a Waffle House outlet in Nashville in April to save the lives of more customers. “This is gonna live at your house,” Boseman said, handing the trophy to Shaw. “Black Panther” actor Winston Duke thanked fans for supporting the movie, which has smashed Hollywood doubts about the broader appeal of black films to become the third highest-grossing film of all time in North America. “Thank you all for investing not just in a beautiful story but for investing in a continued conversation on what this industry and what this culture can achieve,” Duke said. The youth-oriented MTV network, known for its irreverent award shows, again dispensed with gender classifications, placing men and women together in performance categories in a move to embrace equality and gender fluidity. “Stranger Things” was named best TV show and Millie Bobby Brown, 14, won best TV performance for her role as Eleven. The British teenager, who deleted her Twitter account last week after a slew of hate-filled comments, used her acceptance speech to speak out against bullying. “If you don’t have anything nice to say, just don’t say it. There should be no space in this world for bullying and I’m not going to tolerate it, and neither should you,” Brown said. The MTV awards feature blockbuster movie and popular TV shows and has established itself as an antidote to the winter Hollywood awards season, which honors more serious fare. Winners are chosen by fans voting online. “Wonder Woman” actress Gal Gadot won for best fight, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” was voted best reality show, and the popular best kiss category was won by actors Nick Robinson and Keiynan Lonsdale for their Ferris wheel scene in gay teen movie “Love, Simon.” MTV Movie & TV Awards host Tiffany Haddish won best comedic performance for her breakout role in the raunchy 2017 movie “Girls Trip.” “Jurassic World” and “Avengers: Infinity War” actor Chris Pratt was given the annual Generation Award, joining the ranks of previous winners Tom Cruise, Sandra Bullock and Will Smith. Actress and writer Lena Waithe, who last year became the first black woman to win a screenwriting Emmy and who is also gay, was awarded the Trailblazer trophy.
