DevilsEqual: The early roman empire during the reign of Cicero, Julius ceaser and Pompeii, held sway over Egypt. As a matter of fact, Cleopatra and Mark Anthony, her lover and father of some of her kids committed suicide as a result of fear of imprisonment and torture from the invading Romans whom they had been trading with. Business / Top 10 Countries Most Indebted To The IMF by vivaciousvivi(f): 11:01am On May 15 |
Countries seek loans from the IMF to address economic crises, stabilize their currencies, implement structural reforms, and alleviate balance of payments difficulties. Five of the 10 most indebted countries are in Africa, while three are in South America. The only European country on our list, Ukraine has relied on international support amidst the conflict with Russia. It is estimated that Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country caused the loss of a third of the country’s economy. The country owes $9 billion to the IMF. In total, almost 100 countries owe money to the IMF, and the grand total of all of these debts is $111 billion. The below 10 countries (top 10) account for about 69% of these debts. As a matter of fact, Japan has even been in a Deflation before now and still remains one of the most developed countries in the whole of Asia. I think its economy is either the 3rd or 4th largest in the world. Also find out the history of how this so called recessions came to be. It came from Lyndon Johnsons era back then and modern day Economits have posited it is not entirely accurate to depict a country's growth using that measure. Business / Jumia Food & Bolt Food To Shut Down December 2023 by vivaciousvivi(f): 10:52pm On Dec 14, 2023 |
In a decisive move, Jumia is shuttering its food delivery service, Jumia Food, across its operating countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Uganda, and Algeria, by the end of December 2023. The company will now focus on its core physical goods business and the Jumia Pay platform across its 11 countries of operations. Since its inception, Jumia Food experienced fluctuating fortunes, with a significant 82% year-over-year growth in 2021, reflecting the company's strong foothold in the food delivery segment. However, in 2023, the company saw a marked decline in Quarterly Active Consumers and Orders. Parallel to Jumia Food's shutdown, Bolt Food, another significant player in the African food delivery market, announced its exit from Nigeria and South Africa in December 2023. Bolt Food's departure, despite its expansion efforts in major Nigerian cities like Lagos, is attributed to economic downturns. Business / Foreign Airlines May Soon Exit Nigeria by vivaciousvivi(f): 3:38pm On Dec 10, 2023 |
Turkish Airlines, Emirate Airlines, British Airways, and a host of foreign airlines might leave Nigeria very soon if funds trapped in the country are not released soon. In its media briefing held on Friday, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) raised an alarm over the total amount owed by countries in Africa and the Middle East, apportioning over 70 percent of the total debt owed by Africa to Nigeria. Kamil Alawadhi, Regional Vice President, Africa and Middle East, speaking at the press briefing, said, “Nigeria alone accounts for almost half of blocked or trapped funds valued at US$2.57 billion.” Nigeria’s debt or trapped funds belonging to these foreign airlines is $792 million, just $66 million short of the total trapped funds owed by Egypt ($348 million), Algeria ($199 million), the XAF zone ($183 million), and Ethiopia ($128 million). Some would say this situation calls for the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the aviation sector to save the country and especially the sector from being blacklisted as a no-fly area in the future. Politics / Re: 10 African Countries With The Highest Debts To The IMF by vivaciousvivi(f): 7:20pm On Dec 08, 2023 |
@ FreeStuffsNG I hope you know that the debts on this list do not include China? One of the modules I took during my Masters was to do a detailed study and presentation of the Economic relationship between China and Kenya. That amount listed there is paltry compared to what Kenya owes China. Infact, China practically owns that country. China happens to be the world's largest Creditor at the moment and would soon turn to be the largest Debt recovery receptor as well. When it comes to China's debts, Africa is in trouble especially during the period of their Road and Belt Initiative over the last 15yrs. Most of these debts are either due, or would be within the next 5yrs at interest amounts that are still shrouded in some level of secrecy. TrumpDonald2:Toh, thank you jare. I have even forgotten about World Bank although their interest and repayment terms are a bit more lenient towards 3rd world countries 1 Like |

justmondris:How is it that you guys are all missing the point? £10 spent in the original post is earned PER HOUR in UK. Which is minimum wage here that is being reviewed upwards in January 2024 across the country. Not per month. Average weekly hours is between 16hrs and 40hrs. For those earning minimum wage, calculate it. N30k monthly minimum wage in Naija and u take out 12k to buy an almost empty trolley of food, no be die be that? That's the point here. 1 Like |

sukkot:That's for barest minimum start on average which is far higher than £22k average for other areas around the country. My assessment is quite correct. Also I have seen starting jobs where employers advertise to pay a lump sum of about £2k addition to help with moving costs to London. Network Rail that came to one Uni was offering £2.5k for 2.1 and 1st class grads. Most of those kind of people will rent house shares or studios way less than that and share bills. I have explained before that Water, electricity etc are all about £300 total. TV license is nothing and nit everyone pays. I have never. Phone bills if you want to go Boougie is about £25/ month. Council tax btw £150 / £200. I do £5 phone as there is free WiFi everywhere. All those that are doing it, how many wash in a "library" My brother, rest. sukkot: Bro, my rent was N550k per year at OPIC estate outside Lagos o. And then drive through that horrible traffic into the expressway daily to work. And that was because we formed bond with the landlord. The minute we told our landlord we were leaving, I got him a new tenant I met here on nairaland. Landlord jacked the rent for the guy to N1mn - 3 bed flat. The guy was telling me via WhatsApp. I swear! They finally agreed on N850k. Same compound, we pumped our water - which was basically clay and spend N4k to buy chemicals plus a small bag of alum every month to throw inside the tank on every pump. I kid you not. My phcn bill with prepaid meter was N22k / month excluding previous gbese that accumulated after we paid for meter and they were still sending us inflated bills and this was then o. With some SERIOUS rationing. I swich off fridge and completely offloaded my freezer when I go to work. So I was paying crazy in naija for utilities I didn't even enjoy or had to provide for myself. let's not even talk of medicines when ill. The bills are NOT crazy at all like you guys think else, why do people stay? As for your London comment earlier, Londoners pay the highest percentile in rent truly but also earn the highest percentile in income averaging £28k to the high £60Ks. Trust me, my naija secondary school friend who lives there, it's chicken change compared to her net pay at month end o. If you have a partner, it's even better cos u share bills for a single hhousehold.I repeat, its not as crazy as you think and u can save quite well in such a short time too. 7 Likes |

Panda7: I shop in Lidl and what was posted by OP is true o. Only thing i dont buy is the chicken and onions as I get them from proper Al-Halal shops run by Arabs which are cheaper. The spaghetti I bought last (May 2023) - I got 6 packs and paid 0.30p each then so e don even cost. Pls just go to Lidl store online on Google and check for yourself. I have attached straight from their app for you to comfirm and these are their current leaflet. The best part is that when you have a clubcard (loyalty card which is free), you even get some discount more at the till! Not everything that seems too good to be true to you, is now a blatant lie. sukkot:But are you earning that every HOUR? This analysis is easy to grasp bro. In UK, that's lower than minimum wage per hour. And most work between 20 to 40 hours per week. Now please, do the math. I think that's what the OP has been trying to state. 4 Likes 1 Share

Food / Re: See What Someone Bought With An Hour Minimum Wage In The UK £10 by vivaciousvivi(f): 11:15pm On Dec 02, 2023 |
femi4: Actually, that is not totally true o. I didn't pay Council tax for my entire first year as I was exempt. Now I pay £100 / month which is shared between my partner and I as we both work. Around London, council tax is higher usually around £150 to £200 per household and they earn the highest so that's child's play to them. Gas, electric bills? Lol, are NOT expensive at all. All Is paid in my current rent for e.g. - gas, electric, garbage, WiFi and even cleaning less than £700 a month. We only pay £5 for the washer and dryer per laundry day and they are so huge, u can pack 2 weeks worth of laundry sef and spend that every 2 weeks. For households bringing in an average of £4k monthly after tax, that's nothing na. TV license isn't compulsory as we haven't paid that at all. My best friend and her hubby pay £7 monthly. Very reasonable. Case in point, a place called Leamington Spa which is viewed as expensive for a suburb in West Midlands, all bills is less than £300 per household. Most water bills dont go above £15 sef. And such people renting there (upper middle whites) earn between £30k and £60k annually on average, again very affordable for them. Brand new clothes, bags, shoes and electronics are also not crazy at all. The shopping centres are always packed full with people shopping like crazy. Trust me, these people love their fashion...and pets! Remember most produce locally. Trust me, you can save real good here within 3 months even on a starter graduate salary of £22k annually. fastseo:Bless you! Most don't believe it. Sometimes,I think some Nigerians over hype these things so folks back home don't ask them for money or are just being wicked so they don't join them. Until I came, a close fam that was lamenting since, I just found out owns 2 homes. One completely mortgage free. 14 Likes 2 Shares |
