Politics › ASUU: We’re Ready To Approve Extra Cash, Says Tambuwal. by vizboy(op): 4:15pm On Oct 25, 2013 |
HOUSE of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal yesterday said if there is a need to make extra budgetary provisions for the Federal Government to resolve the lingering face-off between it and the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities ASUU), the House would do so. The Speaker spoke in Abuja when he received a briefing on the ASUU strike from the Aminu Suleiman- led House Committee on Education. He called for a speedy resolution of the face-off between both sides, which have led to the closure of government-owned universities for nearly four months. The House mandated the Education committee to investigate the face-off by highlighting the areas of conflict and proffer solutions. Tambuwal urged the warring parties to consider the interest of the students and the educational future of the nation. He said: “Let me use this opportunity to appeal to both the Executive arm and the authorities of ASUU to quickly resolve the problem. If there is need for any appropriation, the House will expeditiously assent to it in the interest of our students and the nation.” The Ondo State Police Command yesterday dispersed the peaceful rally staged by the Federal University of Technology, Akure, branch of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU) Akungba-Akoko. The police frustrated the planned rally in Akure, the Ondo State capital. They moved their officers and men to the entrance of the institution and blocked the protesters from moving out for the protest. The protesters, chanting various solidarity songs, carried placards with various inscriptions, such as “Sound universities yield national development”; “Okojo-Iweala, ask your dad about ASUU struggle”; “ASUU says no to destruction of public universities”; “Agreement is agreement, so FG should do the right thing”, among others. Addressing reporters on the police action, the ASUU- FUTA branch Chairman, Dr Alex Odiyi, wondered why the police prevented the union’s members from holding the protest. He said: “We wonder why the police are doing this to us. We want to go to the town to inform the public about the true state of things. That is our intention. Now, they are saying we should not go. This is very unfortunate.” At the AAU, Akungba-Akoko, the university teachers were disallowed from staging their peaceful protest. Police spokesman Wole Ogodo said the police prevented the protesters so that the protest would not be hijacked by the hoodlums. “We have information that some hoodlums wanted to attack the lecturers. We don’t want that to happen, because it can cause another crisis in the town. That is why we stopped the protest from going beyond their campus,” Ogodo said. The University of Benin (UNIBEN) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday held a road show and protest through major streets of Benin, the Edo State capital. The protesters wore academic gowns and carried placards with various inscriptions. They accused the government of plotting to sell the universities and embarking on what they called an “offensive propaganda”. The UNIBEN-ASUU chairman Dr Anthony Monye-Emina said the allowance allegedly released by the government was not their priority. He said university lecturers were interested in the funding of “infrastructure, science laboratory, workshops and others”. Monye said the government did not behave with honour because President Goodluck Jonathan chaired the fundraising of a private university at a time public universities were on strike. He said: “This government is shameless and has no honour. Tutors have been on strike since July 1 to press home their 2009 agreement with the federal government. We are not making fresh demands. The 2009 agreement recommended N1.6 trillion to cater for education and this ought to be provided at the rate of N400 billion within a period of four years. “The government keeps saying no money to fund education. Yet, it bailed out banks, aviation and even Nollywood.” A former ASUU President Dr Festus Iyayi said the government could not say there was no money. He said: “The president of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, last July, indicated that the amount of money stolen by Nigerians was over $600 billion. If you piled up that money, it would get to the moon seven times and back.” source: www.informng.com/ASUU-were-ready-to-approve-extra-cash-says-tambuwal/ |

Crime › Villagers Beat Up Man Found With Father’s Amputated Leg by vizboy(op): 12:46pm On Oct 25, 2013 |
The Bauchi State Police Command has rescued a middle aged man found with a human leg from being lynched by a mob in Gudun village, Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Haruna Mohammed, who disclosed this yesterday in Bauchi, said that Police initially arrested a man (names withheld) with a human leg in Bauchi. He added that after investigation, it was discovered that the leg belonged to his father, which was amputated in the hospital because of an illness. Mohammed said: “The hospital gave him the amputated leg to go and bury. As a stranger, he pleaded with an Okada rider to take him to the outskirt of the town where he will dispose of it. “Unfortunately for him, the motorcycle rider took him to Gudun village and alerted the public. The enraged mob took laws in their hands and started beating him before he was rescued by the police.” He added that after he was rescued, the Police took his statement and paid a visit to the hospital, where they met his father whose leg was amputated. He said: “The father of the man gave us the same story and we feel there is nothing incriminating against the suspect. “We released him and he was admitted in the hospital because of the beating the villagers gave him.” source: www.informng.com/villagers-beat-up-man-found-with-fathers-amputated-leg/ |

Politics › PDP Inaugurates Disciplinary Committee, Says G7 Rebels Wont Be Punished by vizboy(op): 8:12am On Oct 25, 2013 |
The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has inaugurated its national disciplinary committee headed by second republic minister, Dr. Umaru Dikko, saying it has no plans to punish it rebel members who have formed a parallel group.
The party disclosed that it is yet to receive petitions that would warrant the discipline of the members of the new PDP and their governors. The governors include those of Rivers, Kano, Niger, Adamawa, Jigawa, Kwara and Sokoto.
Inaugurating the disciplinary committee, the chairman of PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur said the former minister of Transport in the second Republic, Dr. Umaru Dikko was chosen to head the party’s national disciplinary committee because of his unflinching stand on discipline and his love for democracy.
Tukur recalled that Dikko’s narrow escape from being kidnapped from Britain to Nigeria by the military some years ago, was on because they (military) was uncomfortable with his call for democracy even while outside the country.
Tukur who said the members of the committee were considered for the job on grounds of their pedigree and love for discipline and the party said no society progresses without adhering to rules and regulation.
Charging the committee to offer their best he said “You are chosen to do this important committee based on your pass record and love for democracy. these are people who will not witch hunt anybody, but you can be sure not to come to them when you cross the line” he said.
Dikko thanked the party for the confidence placed on the committee, promising that they would do everything that was needed to move the party forward.
However, two of the committee members, deputy chairman, Chief Ebenezer Babatope and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu were not at the inauguration.
Other members on the committee are Shuaibu Oyedokun, Hajiya Nana Aisha Quadir, Hussaini Kazaer and Onwe Onwe as secretary.
But addressing the press shortly after the inauguration, PDP’s spokesman, Chief Oliseh Metuh, said the party cannot sanction the G7 governors because there are no petitions against them yet.
He added that no disciplinary measure was planned against the governors, because the party leadership has been meeting on how to reconcile its members.
He underscored that some of the aggrieved members and the governors are founding members of the party who would not go out of their way to pull the party down source: www.informng.com/pdp-inaugurates-disciplinary-committee-says-g7-rebels-wont-be-punished/ |

The prosecutor, Paul Etusi, told the court that the two accused bankers committed the offence on January 25, 2013 at one of the branches of the bank located in the Adigbe area of the state capital.
Etusi said the two suspects fraudulently converted a sum of N200m “with intent permanently to deprive the bank of the ownership of the property.”

Crime › Man Kills Daughter Over Refusal To Attend Church by vizboy(op): 8:17am On Oct 24, 2013 |
Tragedy struck when a 72-year-old man beat his 14- year-old daughter to death in the Iba area of Lagos State over her refusal to attend The Lord’s Chosen Church with him. The deceased’s mother, Mrs. Comfort Udin, 40, explained that her husband had been angry over their daughter’s refusal to attend his church, The Lord’s Chosen.
Comfort, the mother of the deceased revealed that her husband, John Udin, used a stick, covered with nails, to beat his daughter. One of the nails perforated her forehead and she later died.
According to her, the victim, Ejiro Udin, began her journey to the grave last week Tuesday after they told John that they were going to church. The church was however a new church, which Comfort had started attending with the children. She said she did not like John’s church after she attended it once. John had forbidden them from going to church that day. This order had generated a quarrel and John started beating Ejiro with a whip. He later dropped the whip, picked the stick, which had nails and slammed it on her forehead. Rather than take the young girl to hospital, John was alleged to have locked both mother and daughter inside the kitchen, where they spent the night. By the time they took Ejiro to hospital on Sunday, almost five days after the nail attack, it was too late. She died at the hospital that same day.
John on the other hand, said his wife was lying. He explained that he has 14 children and had never killed any of them. According to him, he wanted to hit his wife with the stick, but his wife pushed Ejiro into the path of the stick. He explained that on the fateful day, his wife and daughter had attacked him, after he told them not to go to church that evening because they had not given him food since morning.
Comfort has four children for John, with Ejiro being the eldest. His other eight children are from two former wives. source: www.informng.com/man-kills-daughter-over-refusal-to-attend-church/ |

Politics › THISDAY Foreign Editor, Ohia, Found Dead In His Car by vizboy(op): 11:02am On Oct 23, 2013 |
For reasons yet unknown, THISDAY Foreign and Diplomatic Editor, Mr. Paul Ohia, was yesterday found dead in his official car, a white Kia Optima along Marine Road, Apapa, Lagos.
According to eyewitness reports, the deceased had parked his car for several hours by the side of the road, which aroused the suspicion of passersby, prompting them to move closer to check on him.
The eyewitnesses said the deceased had reclined the driver’s seat and lay on it as if he was sleeping; until they opened the car doors to find out that he was motionless and lifeless. The sympathisers who noticed the THISDAY sticker on the windshield of the car, called THISDAY office, informing of the tragic incident. THISDAY management in turn called the police from Area B Command, who arrived the spot to meet THISDAY Editors – Messrs Collins Edomaruse and Olawale Olaleye. They moved the body to Lagoon Hospital in Apapa where he was confirmed dead.
Although, the hospital said an autopsy would determine the actual cause of death, the medical doctor on duty said the deceased might have died of cardiac arrest. Until his death, Ohia, was a husband and a father of two boys, was a core humanist who believed in justice and equality.
He took life so simple that he believed acquiring property or pursuing wealth is a sheer waste of time. source: www.informng.com/thisday-foreign-editor-ohia-found-dead-in-his-car/ |
