Career / This Is How People Beat Sunday Night Blues by vnlabor(f): 4:13am On Nov 19, 2016
Most of us spend Sundays having forebodings about Monday morning at work. It may be much to the extent that you end up hating Sundays. Below specify practical tips for overcoming the Sunday Night Blues that lots of people succeed to apply.

If you often feel sad, anxious or depressed on Sundays, you may be suffering from the Sunday fear syndrome. If so, you’re not alone. According to a study for the Monster jobs site by the Huffington Post, a whacking 78% of respondents said that they suffer from this syndrome. What a plague it is!
It has many names. Some call it ‘The Sunday Night Blues’, ‘The Sunday Blues’, or ‘Sunday Scaries’. Others call it ‘The Sunday Spookies’, or ‘The Weirds’. Most people know it as ‘The Fear’.

The Sunday Night Blues results from a combination of realizing weekend fun is ending soon, and anticipating the beginning of 5 days of pressure. It can strike even those that like their jobs.

Here are some proven tips that help you beat that end-of-weekend fear.

How to beat the Sunday Syndrome Blues

1. Gear up for Monday on Friday

Turn Friday afternoon into your new Monday morning. Friday afternoon, when you are excited about the weekend, is the perfect time to prepare for Monday. Set aside some time on that afternoon to take care of some little work that will await you on Monday. Get yourself organized so that you can enjoy the weekend and have less to feel stressed about over the work week to come.

Clean out your email and organize your space. Don’t let the unanswered emails bother you. Spend the last part of your Friday answering all your emails and cleaning out the inbox for a fresh Monday ahead. Make sure you acknowledge the receipt of emails – for example, simply give “Thanks” or “Got it”. It lets the sender know that they needn’t do anything else and can check this task off their list. Also, if you don’t have time to check all your emails, mark as unread. This will get rid of the worry that they’ll get lost in the clutter.

And don’t leave your work space a mess, either. A tiny space is a place you’ll be happier to come back to after the weekend.

Reflect on what you’ve accomplished that week. Leave your work with a sense of accomplishment rather than focus on what you still have to do. That way can make a significant difference in your sense of well-being. Review the goals that you set for the week and cross off what you have accomplished.

Write out your goals and to-do-list for the upcoming week. If there is something you didn’t accomplish this week, write out a to-do-list that details how and when you will take care of it in the week to come. It is a great way to let it go out of your head. You should also list 3 to 5 new goals you want to accomplish at work next week, and make a to-do-list that indicates how they will be accomplished.

Plan downtime. Use Friday afternoon to plan for the weekend. And plan for the following week. It’s really helpful to plan something for Monday. You can overcome the Sunday Night Blues with the sense of anticipation.

Set limits on your work availability on the weekend. Let your fellow workers know when you will be available to work. Otherwise, you may be asked to work. Tell them you will be doing no work on Sunday. That is a great way to avert Sunday from getting too stressful.

Say goodbye to your fellow workers and thank them. Let your colleagues know you appreciate any help they gave you throughout the week. In case any tensions flared up, try to resolve them as well as possible. Relationships have a lot to do with an enjoyable, comfortable workplace. By ensuring you leave your fellow workers on a high note, you can avoid the stress of worrying over seeing them on Monday.

2. Make the most of Sunday

First do your hardest weekend chores. Wait until the last moment to do such weekend chores as planning meals, paying bills, balancing your budget, doing laundry, can leave you annoyed and stressed on Sunday. Instead, deal with the most annoying tasks on Saturday morning or afternoon, when you will have more energy and be in better mood. And if you don’t get through all in your to-do-list that weekend, don’t worry. Simply set aside some time to complete the tasks during the week or the next weekend.

Plan a fun activity for your Sunday evening. You can worry about Monday if you are not doing anything on Sunday evening. Instead, kick off a fun weekly ritual that makes that evening something to look forward to.

• Turn Sunday night into date night.
• Grab some popcorn and enjoy a movie.
• Have a dinner picnic.
• Watch your favorite TV show.
• Invite your friends over for dinner.
• Cook a fancy dinner.
• Do a volunteer activity.
• Have a game night.
Avoid alcohol. Whilst it may seem like a nice way to get over the blues, alcohol is a depressant that will just worsen your feeling. Drinking on Sunday will also make your Monday harder. Instead, have a healthy dinner Sunday night. Enjoy a warm cup of tea or some buddy water.

Turn off your phone and don’t check your work email. Doing work on Sunday can cause your anxiety and stress, and having not enough downtime can cause you to be less productive at work. Instead, take time to recharge your batteries and your energy after a stressful week.

If you must, just give yourself at most 30 minutes on Sunday to write out your work to-do-list and organize your calendar. Writing down things will allow you to put these tasks out of your head, and stop worrying about work, and will make space for you to think about relaxing.

Relax before bed. Though keeping preoccupied is a nice way to keep your mind off the blues, you should start relaxing by 8pm so that you can be in good shape for Monday. Attempt creating a soothing Sunday night ritual you can look forward to. And make sure to keep your work related items out of the bedroom so that you can properly relax. Some activities you can try include:

• Take a hot bath with salts or bubbles.
• Meditate.
• Do yoga.
• Read a good book.
• Listen to healing music.
• Give yourself a mani-pedi.
• Enjoy an evening walk.
• Watch the sunset.

3. Give yourself something to look forward to on Monday

Put on your favorite clothes. Studies prove that what you wear can have a remarkable effect on your mood. So make Monday the day you wear your favorite clothes or show off the latest addition to your wardrobe.

Make your commute far from stressful. A tough commute can cause stress and contribute to your Sunday Night Blues. So on Monday, make your commute fun. Leave earlier so that you can stop and get your favorite breakfast. Or try getting a book on tape. It will give you something to look forward to on your commute.
Make your lunch an event. Treat yourself a nice lunch on Monday. Take a fellow worker if you can. Developing personal connections at work will help make the working place less stressful.

Plan a fun activity after work. Fun isn’t just for weekends. To dispel the Sunday Night Blues, go out on a date, go to a movie or concert on Monday night. Or have a nice night at home enjoying your favorite show. If you have kids, just head out for dinner, make Monday night the pizza night or game night, or employ a babysitter and have a date night.

4. Understand your blues

Confront your feelings. Recognize that you have the Sunday Night Blues and what they stem from can be very helpful for you to work through them. Note down specific tasks, actions, or times of days triggering your blues. Write down what you feel, what time it is and why you think you feel so.
• If your Sunday blues stem from leaving unpleasant tasks for the following week until the Sunday night to complete, then the possible solution is to change your weekend and work routine.
• If you Sunday blues come from anxiety about an upcoming presentation or assignment scheduled on Monday, allow yourself to see your nervousness as normal, and tell yourself that Monday will go well. Set aside preparation time that weekend to make sure you are prepared.
• If your Sunday blues come from your jobs and none of the steps you take to deal with them work, then it may be time for you to look for new employment. Plan a little time on Sunday’s to update your resume and find for work.
Make Sunday simply another day. If you think of Friday as the end of the week, you will be anxious about what you have not got done.

Likewise, if you think of Sunday as the end of the weekend, you will worry that you have not optimized your time. Still, these days are not ends. They are just part of eternal progression of days and nights. If you don’t finish what you want to do on Sunday, that’s fine. You have the week ahead to do it.
• If Sunday evening is nearing and you still have tasks to complete, don’t try to cram them that night. Instead, make a to-do-list of how you will finish them during the next week.
• Space out your fun activities. Trying to cram all of your fun into the weekend can be more stressful than enjoyable. Make sure you space out fun activities throughout the week. That way you will not be disappointed if your weekend is not as fantastic as you expected.

Get professional counseling. If after you adjust your weekend routine, organize your Fridays, and try to make your Monday a fun day, you still suffer from the Sunday fear syndrome, it’s high time to consult a professional who will help you discover deeper causes of your negative feelings. They may come from experiences earlier in your life – for example, fearing school on Mondays as you had a learning disorder or were bullied. Or they may reflect your unease with the work type you do.
And to employers...

Fostering a creative and engaging environment help a lot with your employees’ overcoming their Monday blues. Your small, caring gestures can make them feel valued – for example, acknowledging their small triumphs with a bottle of wine or a small gift; putting a bunch of flowers on their desk on the first day of spring. Not expensive gestures, but they can contribute to a workplace environment that your employees all look forward to Monday mornings instead of dreading those days.

Career / Why Should Leave Your Office On Time? by vnlabor(f): 10:14am On Oct 28, 2016
Don’t make overtime to be your habit. Stand on time to see what it can do for your business and your life.

Where are you going after the working hours? If your answer is “in the office”, please think again. You shouldn't need a reason to wrap up your work and leave the office on time but just think about as follows:

1. Working overtime doesn't mean working hard.

Working for long hours doesn't mean commitment, it means stupidity and ruins your productivity. When starting a day, you plan to finish these tasks at the end of the afternoon, which give yourself the illusion of having more time than you have actually. Then you deprive yourself of working pressure and never predict that something will always crop up last minute to delay you. Your plan fails because you don’t know how to manage your time.

The picture can be changed in the next day. If you need 2 hours overtime for one task, it will take you a half of hour to finish it in the next morning with a fresh mind.

Leaving by a certain time can help you arrange and learn what should be prioritized to get the highest yield. Make sure if you’re putting in extra hours, you’re emphasizing productivity.

2. Time is money

Wasting overtime means wasting money of the employers. But if giving your boss time for free, you are handing over cash. According to a recent study, a worker donates $9,471 in unpaid overtime to their employer each year, which adds up to $109.8 billion across the workforce. Can you image how many millions of hours or billions of dollars can be saved each year?
If knowing your value, escape out from that “4 walls” on time.

3. There are other things that you'd rather do.

What is your purpose of hard working? For money, right? Why don’t savour your results? What is fun if you have a lot of money without feeling anything.

Instead of staying with a mountain of work, throw yourself in outdoor activities, networking, dating, learning new languages, etc. The God knows what amazing opportunities are waiting you a head.

You work to have a more comfortable life. Learning to enjoy your life in a right way is also one of the motivations that help you create the next fruitful achievements.

4. Everything can lose, even job but not family and friends.

It is never worth neglecting your loved ones for work. A great job may be the top most priority for you right now but you must know that your friends and family will be the ones standing by your side when you feel lonely, not your boss.

When was the last time you talked to your mom peacefully or took your parents out for dinner? They brought you up and all they need in return is your time. It is also the right time to pick up the phone, make a call, and meet friends you've been cancelling since forever now.

5. It is bad for your health

“Health is gold”. No good health means no success. The stress from work is a reality that more and more youngsters are falling prey to every day. As a study, sitting all day can lead to a greater risk of heart disease, cancer and stroke. Moreover, this study also demonstrates that those who have trend to stay in the office will have greater risk of obesity.

Leave office stuff behind, spend this time on exercise, cook at home if you don’t want to end in a hospital.

Don’t make overtime to be your habit. Stand on time to see what it can do for your business and your life.

Career / 10 Sayings Should Be Avoided In The Workplace by vnlabor(f): 9:52am On Oct 10, 2016
Communication skills play a vital role in building a professional, confidence attitude in the workplace. Experts say that there are three important factors created the iconic leader of prominent individuals: How do they act? How do they look like? What do they say?

Maybe you do not know, accidentally few words will make you become pale with others, or worse, cause break the peace in communication.

These following 10 sayings should never be used to have a flexible and very professional image in the eyes of superiors, colleagues.

1. "What does this mean?"

Maybe you just use the above question to find more hints for your problem which you not understand, but this is a saying quite negative nuances. The listener will feel you really do not have the willingness to learn problem. Please replace it with the sentence: "Could you tell me more clearly about your opinion?" - Surely the conversation will become much more open and friendly.

2. "It is not fair"

Keep on complaining about the things you find yourself being unfairly treated cannot make the situation better but even can be worse. When referring to any issue revolves around whether daily tasks or macro complaining will only make you be less confident, at a standstill because of jealous, frustrated feeling.

3. "This is not my responsibility"

Each individual was given a mission. It is perfect if you just make your whole mission with full of responsibility and seriously. However, sometimes you probably have to undertake the work of colleagues, this time consider each task and behavior appropriately, because the final result, the responsibility is shared among everyone.

4. "Just"

"I just wanted to check if that ...", "I'm just thinking if this ..."
The phrase "just" is repurposed into a conversation with the aim of mitigating the thorns in the sentence, but using it will make your ideas become more cautious, less persuasive. In any circumstance, personal opinions are very welcomed, so please show a little power when saying your thought, this completely benefits you!

5. "I really cannot find the time!"

How many people do you think will believe in this excuse? For a work has not been completed, even though you really did not have time or you forgot, the best answer is certainly not "blame" in the circumstances! When asked about the job has been assigned, give a specific time to complete in an ingenious way to rather to beat around the bush for your delay.

6. "It's not my responsibility. I sent an email from last week! "

You’ve sent email does not mean your responsibility ended. When receiver does not reply email in a few days, the blame they will not make your images better. Why not take the initiative to contact or communicate directly? In addition always keep an active role in the work, make sure no one can blame you when the job is stalled.

7. "I hate..." or "It annoys me when ..."

Be cautious in expressing upset emotion in office environment always needed attention. Using impatient words, especially when you target directly an object or a job not only creates an immature image but also a "spark" leads to many conflicts difficult to solve.

8. "You should be / have to ..."

No one feels comfortable to control. These words really cause uncomfortable feeling to the listeners! Instead, try to change: "In the future, I have the opinion that we should ..." This is a much more positive saying.

9. "I'm sorry, but ..."

Apologize when you feel really guilty and afraid of what you had caused. Explaining, listing reasons makes apology become disingenuous and creates a feeling that you were uncomfortable to admit you were wrong.

10. "Actually ..."

"Actually, the thing is," "Actually, you should know how to solve this", etc ... You may find that talking is quite strange? More than that, it looks like you're trying to talk to people know that their opinions were "incontrovertible" wrong. Try the suggestions in a positive and friendly sentence, maybe your opinion will be warmly welcomed!
Always behave in harmony because who knows whether career fate in the future lies in simple conversations each day.

Business / 5 Management Ways That Leaders Need To Stay Away by vnlabor(f): 7:26am On Oct 07, 2016
Are you a modern businessman, always immerse in the ideas and dedicate yourself to the job? How good it is! But you should also be alert. Some personalities could lead you to success yesterday but now can create the dissatisfaction in employees.

aybe you're wondering: "How did it happen? I was doing so great". It is easy to understand. You gave birth to "brainchild" since the day it was a germ idea. Then you fed it to grow and now it is no longer a little kid anymore. So, change the "treat", or in other words the method of management, is necessary to adapt to each stage of business development.

The mid-level leaders should also learn from this experience, because changing from a small team with a few members to a larger group will require new leadership skills.

Here are 5 common mistakes on management and how to fix it:

1. Micromanaging

It is undeniable that the founder is the person understanding company the best. However, to put the business on a new turning point, leaders need to break the habit of micromanaging, to stop "putting your nose" on everything, to stop "steering" from large to small things.

Trust the staffs, give them the tools and objectives to arrangement of ideas and implementation plan. Maybe these initial results will make you unhappy, please persevere with your trust, encourage and train them.

Assign work and power not only helps you train a "soldier" but also saves time for more important things.

2. Changing constantly.

Modern business is always full of ideas. Initiative comes easily as breathing, but realization it was a completely different matter, requiring a lot of time.

If in the morning you assigned to your staff the plan A, in the afternoon you changed 180 degrees to the plan X, everyone will be extremely confuse and upset about effort spent as useless. Be careful to choose the best ideas, discuss and plans with staff.

3. Send mail in the holidays and ask to respond immediately

Business to you is the most important, is the top priority in life. But you have to accept the fact that, despite of the enthusiasm, staffs still have family and personal life with others priorities different from you.

Please respect the holidays, accept the interval "weekend" of the best employees. It is an opportunity to re-energize them to continue to contribute.

4. Refuse to listen

Put yourself in this situation: you have a good idea and no one wants to hear your presentation, how much disappointed you are. Actually, you've already gone through that, long ago, when you embark on a new startup.

So next time when employees want to share an idea, really listen to them. The best ideas to contribute to the development of the company will come from people you do not expect.

5. Too stingy

The early days of startup you tighten all spending to survive, but once businesses overcome the nascent stage and are ready for development, it is time to invest money for the target. Investing is not a waste of money but invest in things that are calculated wisely to push the company to the next level.

Unable requires flourished while you only minimal investment. Be confident to invest in technology, marketing and personnel. Care for full benefits of employees to encourage them to focus wholeheartedly to the task.

Business / The Real Picture Of A Businessman. Are You Over Idealizing? by vnlabor(f): 4:09am On Oct 01, 2016
Being an entrepreneur means that the dream of escaping from “for hire” label and to build ther own business has come true. This thought obsesses them in a long-term of their life. But, the ugly truth below could make us disillusion.

There is a sad fact that 90% of start-up failed after only a few years of operation. Maybe successful stories of Amazon or Zappos will inspire you and motive you to do something. Remember to be careful and discreet before make any decisions.

Passion is not enough: I know I’ve heard like a thousand times the word “passion is the key to success”.

Many years of hard-working: The mission of an employer is build and manage business work in a carefully, accurate way day by day, even year by year. Become your self-employed means you have ready to work multiple times harder than the other.

Your life is isolated: Sometimes, thinking about being free to work, managing in your own way is interesting and fascinated. But at one point, you will feel stress and even lonely. Working in other company, you have a colleague network to share responsibility, exchange thought and make decisions together. The loneliness, even being isolated is a major issue of many entrepreneurs.

To lead the others, you have to control yourself first: In almost company nowadays, employer only gives an idea, employee will perform it. Do you know that the less staff you have, the more successful chances you reach? Your knowledge and talent are the keys to lead company to success.

Only way to be rich: This is a completely wrong conception. A lot of roads could help you create a huge asset. There is no “the only way”.

Confident crisis: Most of businessmen are confident, which probably could lose when facing with the burden of money and responsibility.

Career / Working In Foreign Country: Some Notices For You by vnlabor(f): 5:50am On Sep 22, 2016
You just received an invitation to work in a foreign country? Too cool! Future and hundreds of opportunities are opening to you. But before "pack the luggage and go", take a couple of minutes to read these tips!

1. Life is not a dream

Check carefully the important information such as visa, visa support and insurance policies of the company, salary, accommodation,...is never enough.

These procedures are boring but it plays a very important role to the success or failure of the trip and your career development later. Do not get too excited and forget!

2. " He who sees through life and death will meet with most success"

Working in a completely unfamiliar country, you will need certain knowledge about human, culture, society and (especially) traffic. Do you know in Bulgaria, shaking head means agree and nodding means refuse? Or in India, shaking hands with your left hand is disrespect and rudeness? (More: culture and etiquette all over the world)

Take the time to learn this information to avoid unnecessary shocks: ask a few friends and relatives have experienced or are living in that country, or you can also ask directly HR in charge of contact and contract with you, I believe they are willing to help.

3. Adaptation

The third factor is equally important. Temporarily set the excitement aside (though that is hard!) to view real problems and carefully consider to difficulties ahead: new languages, new home, new job, work environment and new friends.

Will you be comfortable with a totally new life? You must be adaptable? You can get up and catch up with the work environment quickly? However, do not worry too much.

Take out a sheet of paper, a pen and list all the obstacles you may encounter, then put in two columns: "Can" and "cannot". Too many things in the column "cannot"? It's okay, you calmly look at each problem and find a specific adaptive direction. If you have prepared carefully, it's nothing cannot overcome right?

4. For those who just have the first job

If this is your first job after graduation, you should remember and be prepared for this sudden change, you will not have the long-term break, cannot travel freely whenever you want and there are certain constraints with work.

Besides, you will have hundreds of things to wonder: When do I get an advance? How long can I be promoted? Should I stick with the company in long-term? Am I really comfortable with this field? ... Think carefully about the next step is of course something completely correct and should do, but do not embark on this mess before having these first jobs’ experiences, learn how to love and be familiar with it.

Let’s give away before calculate what you'll be received from this work, instead of busy wondering and create pressure for yourself

5. And FINAL: prepare your luggage!

Things to keep in mind when packing the luggage, remember to check out before cramming all the things and irritable because you just have only two suitcases.

- Firmly goodbye to clothes unused from 3 months or more: sooner or later you will throw it away, do not bring them and leave other important stuff at home

- Sports shoes and warm clothing: Depending on each of places, these items will be needed or not, but remember to bring them along because the price for this item is high in other countries.

- Work clothes: Remember that you are going to use them for 8 hours / day, 5 days / week, do not too engrossed with nice clothes to forget.

- High-tech appliances: Do not forget the charger! Ideally, you should prepare and arrange before you put everything in the suitcase. The other electrical appliances should be considered carefully because some countries use 110V power, means that sooner or later you have to buy new ones.

- Food reserves: Some instant food will be your savior in the early days not familiar with exotic food, but do not bring too much.

Now you can be assured to discover the new land and your dream job. Wish you a successful life!

Business / The Secrets Of Great Cross-cultural Leaders by vnlabor(f): 4:56am On Aug 05, 2016
Globalization blurs the borders between countries and cultures. Multinational corporations are the home to diverse individuals who bring innovative ideas, fresh perspectives, broad knowledge and various skills to the organization they work for. As a result, leaders face different ways of thinking, cultural norms, and behaviors among employees from different cultures. To make the best of a diverse team, it's crucial to look for cross-cultural leaders who can effectively deal with cultural differences and turn the challenge into competitive advantage for the company.

Who can be great cross-cultural leaders?

Not all leaders can become successful cross-cultural leaders. The global marketplace is ever changing, and leaders should understand it before going international. However, leadership varies from culture and culture and countries to countries.
Culture and country are not necessarily interchangeable words when it comes to cross-cultural management. People from different countries with similar socioeconomic conditions and levels of education may have more shared work-related values than random people from the same country. It's the result of a research by Bradley Kirkman, Vas Taras and Piers Steel published on HBR.

A lot of managers are successful leaders in their own cultures, but they find difficult when working in cross-cultural environment. It may come from the lack of cultural differences and flexibility in their leadership style. Leadership talent professionals are always in high demand in global market. There are 2 types of cross-cultural leaders in multinational companies: local and expat leaders.

Local leaders are talent professional who was identified and developed to become global leaders in the long term. These leaders have the advantages of local understanding and standard global leadership training with more competitive pay.
Expat leaders are completely different. They are highly educated, multilingual professionals who have already lived, worked, and studied for a long time in different countries. They have already cultural competence in the global environment. Moreover, expat leaders are willing to move to other countries.

Key characteristics of cross-cultural leaders

No matter where cross-cultural leaders come from, they must share common characteristics to bring a group of diverse people together and make the most of them:

1. Cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity

Successful leaders understand the importance of creating cross-cultural understanding and building trust in their organization. The leaders must be the first people to understand clearly similarities and differences in cultural values and norms among the teams. Moreover, they can predict potential for misconception and miscommunication which might arise among members from different cultures. When people with different ways of thinking, behaviors and motivations work together, workplace conflict is unavoidable. Good cross-cultural leaders are required to have deep cultural knowledge, because you can only solve cultural differences when you understand the background. Cross-cultural competent leaders see cultural differences as a huge potential for development, not a challenge. They know how to align the diverse workforce and motivate them to work effectively in a team.

2. Self-understanding and self-reflection

Effective leaders need understand their own leadership style and behaviors. There are 4 main styles of leadership: autocratic style, bureaucratic style, charismatic style and democratic style. By acknowledging these differences, leaders improve their ability to function while conducting global business. However, in a diverse team, micromanagement is not a wise choice.
Nobody is perfect, and obviously you are not an exception. Leaders should continuously assess themselves to recognize their own pitfalls to timely adjust to become better and better. Other team members can judge you through small habits that you may not notice. Be sure the trust within the team is enhanced day by day.

3. Open-mindedness and flexibility

Open-mindedness and flexibility are very important to distinguish a successful cross-cultural leader or not. Global leaders have enough flexibility to easily adapt to different cultural expectations. Leaders will need to change to be able to address the needs of ever changing markets and employees. Leaders with open minds are easier to empathy the differences across cultures. More than that, they will eager to find creative ways to resolve any problems. They know how to create a sense of relatedness among people despite cultural differences.

4. Persistence and curiosity

Cross-cultural leadership is not an overnight success. It takes a lot of time and effort to see the improvement in the diverse team. Leaders need to be patient and persist to the common goals. Besides, they should keep an eye on the whole progress to ensure the mutual trust among individuals from different cultures.
Without an intense curiosity, even leaders can’t keep up with the whole team in particular and the industry in general. Be humble and kind, because there're always other things to learn in constant changing cross-cultural environment.

Career / Re: 18 Things Mentally Strong People Do by vnlabor(f): 5:52am On Jul 08, 2016
Maslow studies individuals that he believed to be self-actualized, inclusive of Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein, to derive the common traits of the self-actualized person. Here are the most important characteristics, from his book ‘Motivation and Personality’:

1. Self-actualized persons embrace the unknown and the ambiguous.

They aren’t threatened or afraid of it. They, instead, accept it, are comfortable with it, and often attracted to it. "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious," - Einstein.

2. They accept themselves, together with their flaws.

They perceive themselves as they are. With a high level of self-acceptance, they lack defensiveness or artificiality. Eventually, shortcomings aren’t seen as shortcomings at all, but simply as neutral personal traits.

3. They prioritize and enjoy the journey, not just the destination.

They can often enjoy the getting to some place as well as the arriving. It is, from time to time, possible for them to make out of most trivial and routine activity an intrinsically engaging game, dance or play.

4. Whilst they are inherently unconventional, they don’t seek to shock or disturb.

"... the world of people in which he lives could not understand or accept [his unconventionality], and since he has no wish to hurt them or to fight with them over every triviality, he will go through the ceremonies and rituals of convention with a good-humored shrug and with the best possible grace [... Self-actualized persons would] usually behave in a conventional fashion simply because no great issues are involved or because they know people will be hurt or embarrassed by any other kind of behavior."

5. They are motivated by growth, instead of the satisfaction of needs.

"Our subjects no longer strive in the ordinary sense, but rather develop. They attempt to grow to perfection and to develop more and more fully in their own style. The motivation of ordinary men is a striving for the basic need gratifications that they lack."

6. They have purpose

"[They have] some mission in life, some task to fulfill, some problem outside themselves which enlists much of their energies. [...] This is not necessarily a task that they would prefer or choose for themselves; it may be a task that they feel is their responsibility, duty, or obligation.”

7. They are not troubled by small things.

Instead, they focus on the bigger picture. "They seem never to get so close to the trees that they fail to see the forest. They work within a framework of values that are broad and not petty, universal and not local, and in terms of a century rather than the moment.”

8. They are grateful.

"Self-actualizing people have the wonderful capacity to appreciate again and again, freshly and naïvely, the basic goods of life, with awe, pleasure, wonder, and even ecstasy, however stale these experiences may have become to others [...] Thus for such a person, any sunset may be as beautiful as the first one, any flower may be of breath-taking loveliness, even after he has seen a million flowers. [...] For such people, even the casual workaday, moment-to-moment business of living can be thrilling."

9. They share deep relationships with some, but also feel identification and affection toward the entire human race.

"Self-actualizing people have deeper and more profound interpersonal relations than any other adults [...] They are capable of more fusion, greater love, more perfect identification, more obliteration of the ego boundaries than other people would consider possible. [...] These people tend to be kind to almost everyone [...] of suitable character regardless of class, education, political belief, race, or color."

10. They are humble

"They are all quite well aware of how little they know in comparison with what could be known and what is known by others. Because of this it is possible for them without pose to be honestly respectful and even humble before people who can teach them something."

11. They resist enculturation.

They don’t allow themselves to be passively molded by culture. Instead, they make their own decision, choosing what they see as good and rejecting what they see as bad. Still, they don’t accept all like a sheep, or reject all like an average rebel.
As a result of their self-decision, they have codes of ethics that are individualized rather than being dictated by society. "They are the most ethical of people even though their ethics are not necessarily the same as those of the people around them [...as] the ordinary ethical behavior of the average person is largely conventional behavior rather than truly ethical behavior."

12. Despite all this, they are not perfect.

"There are no perfect human beings! Persons can be found who are good, very good indeed, in fact, great. [...] And yet these very same people can at times be boring, irritating, petulant, selfish, angry, or depressed. To avoid disillusionment with human nature, we must first give up our illusions about it."

Do you realize some similarities between mentally strong people and self-actualized people?
Career / Re: Top 10 Most Demanded Jobs In The Oil And Gas Industry by vnlabor(f): 6:04am On Jul 04, 2016
xfire:
This is meant for those who desire a career in the oil and gas industry, especially for graduates and undergraduates who may want to be informed.

It's ironical that despite the high graduate unemployment rate and imminent glut in oil supply due increase production worldwide, there is actually a shortage of skilled and specialized labour in the global oil and gas industry. Unfortunately, the most in-demand occupations require specific skills that can only be acquired through experience.

As an oil and gas professional, I have followed the trend and revolution in the industry globally over the past few years. I also follow technological breakthroughs (especially the fracking technology in the US that is redefining the dynamics of the industry worldwide), oil discoveries and hiring patterns all over the world. Based on these trends and statistics, I have come up with a compilation of the top 10 in-demand occupations in the oil and gas industry. This is not limited to the to the industry in Nigeria. This is based on global demand.
I can guarantee that you will always get a quality job (somewhere around the world) if you have at least 5 years experience in the fields. If after gaining five years experience in any of the top 10 fields mentioned below, you lack a well-paying job for more than 6 months, you better go and see your pastor or imam for deliverance. Maybe na from village.

So, for your graduates desiring a lasting career in the oil and gas industry, you may consider these specialized fields. Just work on getting basic experience and you will become indispensable:

1) Geoscientists
2) drilling engineers/ drilling supervisors/driller

No (1) & (2) With recent oil and gas discoveries all around the world including Africa (East Africa and the Gulf of Guinea) and the aggressive exploration for oil all over the world, there is a very high demand for geoscientists (geologists and geophysicists). Geoscientists are involved in the exploration for oil and also in the initial stages after oil discovery. Drilling engineers/ drilling supervisors /drillers are involved in drilling operations (both for exploration and production). There is an shortage of experienced drilling engineers worldwide. A colleague of mine who is drilling engineer told me that he has already received two good offers via linkedIn (even without applying!). And he barely has 3 years experience!

3) subsea engineers
4) subsurface and completions engineers
5) pipeline and piping engineers

No (3) - (5) With oil companies going into the more uncertain but rewarding deepwater operations, there is a high demand for individuals with deepwater experience. Subsea engineers design, implement and maintain structures, tools and equipment used in underwater components of offshore oil and gas production. Pipeline engineers design and maintain subsea pipeline in offshore fields. You can't ignore subsurface/completions (well) engineers who ensure oil is produced at optimum level from oil wells.

6) Marine specialists / engineers
Marine specialists are very critical in oil and gas industry. You need marine professionals in offshore oil and gas operations. This is because of the constant use of marine vessels and boats for supply and transportation of crude oil, liquefied gas, food, equipment, etc. Besides, the increase in FPSO's (floating vessels for oil production in deepwater fields) all around the world requires the specialized skill of marine professionals to maintain vessel stability on the sea.
Believe me, marine specialists are on top of their world. I know a marine specialist that has worked for 3 major oil companies in Nigeria in the last 8 years.

7) Offshore maintenance technicians
These are the mechanical, electrical and instrumentation technicians working in rigs and production platforms both onshore and offshore. There is a high demand for them globally. And the minimum requirement to become one is just an OND.

(cool Truck drivers and crane operators
Yes, you read right! There is a high degree of lifting operations in the oil and gas industry and certified crane operators are in demand. Believe me, they earn well.
Truck drivers are in great demand too, especially in US and Canada where there is a significant onshore oil production. Truck are needed to move rigs and equipment, haul oil, water and sand away. The new fracking technology that has made USA self-sufficient in oil production requires constant evacuation of sand from drilling sites. The drivers are also expected to be mechanics, able to fix to fix their large trucks. With USA set to be a net exporter of oil to the global community (competing with the likes of Nigeria for markets), there is currently a shortage of truck drivers to meet her goal.

9) Tax accountant
The oil and gas industry is technology driven, thus the technical professionals are the most demanded. However, the only non-technical profession to break into the top 10 is accounting. With oil and gas companies always the easy targets for governments and public ministries in areas of tariffs, royalties, taxes and other deductions, the role of experienced oil and gas accountants become critical. There is a crying need for accountants (especially tax accountants), who can balance the books and ensure sustained profit.

10) Reservoir Engineers
Eventhough this list is in no particular order, I think reservoir engineers are actually No. 10 on the list. The reservoir engineers play a significant role in the oil and gas industry. Their job is identify oil and gas reserves and develop strategies to maximize recovery and conducting simulation studies to ensure the optimum recovery.

Other in-demand professions that did not make the top 10 list include technical safety engineers, environmental specialists, welding technicians, process engineers and machinery (mechanical) engineers
Hi Xfire,
Thanks for your great sharing! Do you have some evaluations on this current situation of oil industry, especially on recruitment?
Career / Re: 5 Things To Do Before You Quit The Job You Hate by vnlabor(f): 8:01am On Jul 02, 2016
If you feel hate your job, try the following:

1. Revalue yourself

Ask yourself: Why I hate my current job? This is a new feeling or a long time ago? The reason comes from my colleagues, my job or company culture?

Please list a series of strengths and weaknesses of work and the conditions you want to have for future work. Consider to change the situation without having to switch job, or think as it's time to move on or not. If possible, do not leave your current job until you are assured of a new job.

2. Find out what the reasons are.

After re-evaluate yourself an overview, it is important that you should determine whether unhappy things come from. This helps you to identify the measures are good or not. For example, if you feel stressed and want to change jobs to reduce it, but you might be still stressed in the new job. If you get bored because you are not happy in life, this solution will not help either.

3. Talk to the manager

If you are not satisfied with your work schedules, remuneration or projects you are assigned, you should talk to your boss. There may be a solution to overcome the situation, and things may be easier than you think.

4. Do not give up immediately

If your job has an okay wage and prospect, consider finding the changes within the company. Remember "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence." The new job doesn’t mean better. Before deciding to quit or change into new areas, learn about labor market and prepare for your knowledge, skills as well as psychologically necessary.

If your job is not tolerable or unsafe, of course, do not hesitate to find a new job soon.

5. Change attitudes

You may have met a failure, or a bad experience at work that makes you obsessed, your productivity decrease. In that case, please dismiss this psychological problem.
Be careful when expressing negative emotions while you are still working. Because even if you are not satisfied and want to leave, go away with your head held high, not the alienation of the people. Be professional and willing to complete on your job responsibilities.
In short, try to maintain a positive mood and focus on the positive aspects of the job. If you do not find any pleasure at work, consider moving away.

6. Be professional

Even if you’ve planned on moving, continue to do a good job. In this way, after the resignation you will get good reviews. And in case the situation is improving, you decide to stay, you will not be ashamed of your behavior before. Remember: Do not "burn’s one bridge", whether you're dissatisfied with your boss and work.

7. Set career goals

Determine your 5-year plan: "What do you want to achieve in the next 5 years? Could the current location help you achieve that? If not, which works will create job opportunities for you? How to gain that job" It is a series of questions you need to answer to know what you want and what to do. You need to look at long-term goals for the future.

8. Search for a new joy

Looking for opportunities when participates in a conference, classroom or your favorite topic project. Participate in the fascinating subject can make you excited and your job becomes less boring.

9. Do not “He that cannot beat the horse beats the saddle”

Simple but helpful tips except #2 lol.
Writing is also another way to keep awake at work. Whenever you feel tired and want to sleep, grab a pen and start writing. You could even move your body around for a little bit to get your thoughts flowing fluently and boost some creative ideas. Try to start with the first thing in your head or whatever you just thinking of at that time. It’s an easy and prompt way to do, isn’t it?

Career / Re: Ways You Can Balance Your Work Life And Personal Life by vnlabor(f): 8:44am On Jun 28, 2016
Great tips! Who doesn't enjoy a work-life balance, especially those have children, right? I'd like to add 2 more tips for people who have just started to try to strike a balance between work and life:

1. Assess your current situation
To get started, you need to analyze all aspects of your work (job characteristics, short and long term goals, ambition) and personal life (personality, personal habits, general lifestyle, family obligation, spirituality…). Then you have to identify your problems with your work and personal life to discard and figure out your top priorities which really matter to you to focus on.

2. Ask for support when needed

Depend on each job characteristics, your work – life balance can be easier or harder to achieve. For instance, if you are working as a travel coordinator who has to be always at the service 24/7, you can stop thinking about work life balance in this career.
If you want to achieve work – life balance, make an open conversation with your manager. I believe that he/she will empathize because he/she also wants the same thing, especially if you are a standout employee. Make sure that you understand the company policies and can make benefits for both employer and you if following your time arrangement. You need also ask your colleagues to help you some tasks or avoid contact you for work purpose after you leave the office. And if you can’t reach any agreement, it’s time to consider a job move which allows you more flexibility in time.

You may change your point of view after taking a look at below data:

A recent research asked 2188 human resources specialists, which shows us that candidates have tendency to exaggerate about their skills and experience in CV.

In addition, there are 58% of recruiters have met at least a dishonest data. Besides, 1/3 of them (33%) said they started seeing the “make up” the truth phenomenon in CV from after crisis.

All the lies could make your resume stand out in the crowd, it is, but in a negative meaning.

The research shows that there are 51% employers frankly said that they would completely ignore a “fake” CV right away, 40% said it would depend on what they were lying, and only 7% would continue to check the resume if they liked that candidate, which can be explained by they think it was a mistake in writing, not on purpose.

Career / These Time Management Tips Will Help Increase Your Work Productivity By 40%++ by vnlabor(f): 5:26am On Jun 14, 2016
Have you ever wished that you could have more than 24 hours a day to handle all your work and personal stuff? You are not alone. A lot of people around us always find themselves busy at work with deadlines, plans, meetings, calls, emails, etc because they don't know key principles and techniques of time management...

Time is money. Everyone, no matter how successful they are, has the same 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. But time is relative. It flies or drags depending on how you spend your time. To make use of your work time better, you should try some of these following tips to get immediate result:

1. Clarify your goals, roles and tasks

In real life, your roles are not always as transparent as specified in the job description. To better manage your time at work, you should clarify your responsibilities and related tasks as well as your career SMART goals if possible.

2. Make daily schedule

It takes less than 10 minutes to make a to-do list everyday. Your pre-work routine should be sorted by priority. It's simple but crucial to define a clear vision to follow. The pre-assigned tasks might be continuously adjusted due to unexpected disruptions, but you should respect your ultimate goals for the day. Writing to-do list should be turned into your habit to attain good time management in the long run.

3. Set priority

We often make ourselves busy with unlimited pending assignments. But work is a never-ending process, you can't handle all tasks within a day! The initial thing to do at the beginning of a workday is prioritize your tasks. Urgent and important tasks should be complete first.

4. Find your most productive time of the day

It's important to recognize that everyone's biological clock is not the same. And your brain couldn’t work at the same pace during 24 hours a day. Getting to know yourself well is the only way to find your most productive hours to complete the most important and complicated work.

5. Avoid multitasking

Many people think that multitasking is a great idea to do the work faster. Yet several studies have found that multitasking reduces not only your efficiency and accuracy but also your productivity by 40%! Focusing on one task at a time, step by step is the best practice to prevent yourself from being overwhelmed and getting stressed.

6. Learn to say "no"

Sometimes you have to decline to help other colleagues deal with trivial things to concentrate on your important work. When it comes to time management, your promises and commitments should be considered more carefully before making. "Words must be weighed, not counted."

7. Eliminate preventable distractions

The Internet and hi-tech devices bring various useful tools for work, but they are also the silent time thefts. Can you count how many times you check emails, Facebook, Twitter and other social networks during 8 hours of work time a day? Many studies have indicated that social media is the most popular distractor in the workplace. Besides, phone calls, unexpected guests, piles and stacks can also make you distract from your concentration. Therefore, make sure all of them are kept out of your sight when you need to stick to your work completely for the best result.

8. Allow down-time between tasks

It doesn't necessary to stay focused on your to-do list the whole 8 hour blocks. Your brain and your eyes need time for relaxation between tasks. During the break, you can take some activities you enjoy or simply do some exercises. However, you should set the time limits based on the length and complexity of the task you have finished to make sure you are going on the right track.

These above tips are very simple but when combining together they can make a huge improvement on your work result and satisfaction. There's no need to follow all of them to raise your productivity, just pick some suitable techniques and find your own ways to manage your time at work better. Furthermore, keep in mind that good time management at work will help you achieve a better work-life balance.

Career / Re: Don’t Be Stupid And Avoid These Career Killer Mistakes by vnlabor(f): 11:32am On Apr 18, 2016
Thanks for your useful sharing. We often make some silly mistakes without realizing it before it's too late. cry

I'd like to contribute 5 more regular mistakes that can kill your chance of getting promoted:

1. Be cocky

The fastest way makes you fail at having an advance salary is cocky behavior.

Even if you are doing so well with your work, but just at the level where you completed what you were asked to do and no more, it is hard for you to compete with others colleagues. According to job specialists, an employee who just focuses on responsibility in job description is hardly success in career.
The managers is not highly estimate for those satisfying and only concentrating on finishing their job without willing to help others or taking part in common activities in company

2. 180 degree turn

Changing is good but if you “jump” into a totally new industry, it will be a huge affection to your successful way. Cause it’s like a message that you still unsure about what you want or you are short of specialized knowledge, skills to go far in that field.

3. Not entrust your works.

You take all the responsible without distributing the mission to members of the group and you think there is no other could make it better than you?

Chuck Fried, Chairman and CEO of TXMQ, said that he hardly promote for a person who has believed he/she is the best and no one could replace. He also suggests the managers should hire the smart, talent people having abilities in easily taking over other mission.

4. Listless

When you are a new hired, you are full of energy and excitement. You are eager to do all assigned job. However, the time passed by, your disengagement in work gradually replaces for enthusiasm at first.

These staffs usually don’t care about company’s activities. They just only care about how to have a job and salary more than a career. Once you lose your passion, it is difficult to have a bright career.

5. Change your job constantly

It is accepted if you change your job for a better position, but to a certain limit, it is not that simple anymore. After every 2 years, you do another job for example, or 3 or 4 years for another field, seriously you look like a “homeless” person. Your loyalty and abilities will be doubt, because in this economy situation, most recruiters want a candidate who will attach to the company for a long time.

Have you ever wished that you could do something so amazing in your life? Maybe, now you already have this ‘big’ dream but you are worried that it will never be anything more than a fantasy.
Here are five people going from Zero to Hero in many fields: business, sports, media and science.
Their success did not come from luck, not even skill or talent but one thing in common….they worked very hard and they never gave up! It is just that simple, read these 5 short stories, let them inspire you and make you believe in what you really can do.

1. Colonel Sanders- creator of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)

You might not realize him by his name, but I’m pretty sure you were familiar with his face. It’s safe to say he is possibly the world’s most recognizable commercial icon.

But before all the fame he gets, Colonel Sanders was only a retiree who had nothing except a fried chicken recipe, a restaurant that was about to broke and a dream?
The only thing that made him different from the other person was his unbelievable level of determination. To turn his dream come true in his 60s, Colonel Sanders tried to promote his fried chicken recipe by driving around the country sleeping in his car and knocking on every door. He was rejected 1009 times until finally someone said yes! And that was the start of the million dollar empire KFC.

2. Howard Schultz -CEO of Starbucks

Born to a poor family in Brooklyn, Howard Schultz was an accomplished athlete in his youth, which allowed him to go to college on an athletic scholarship. After graduating, he initially worked as a salesman for Xerox, and then as a general manager for Swedish drip coffee maker manufacturer, Hammarplast. It was in that capacity that he first came into contact with a small Seattle-based coffee-bean shop called Starbucks. He would go on to work for this company and eventually run it, turning Starbucks into the global brand it is today.

3. Michael Jordan

As a kid, Michael was seen as the ‘goofy’ kid who liked basketball. He wasn’t very tall and didn’t come from an athletic family like the basketball star must-have factors.

But he got determined. Michael met many setbacks and failures but finally, his hard work eventually paid off.
In Michael first day entered the league, his jump shot was evaluated as “not good enough”. He spent his off season on practicing hundreds of jump shots every day until they were perfect.
Do you know that in High school, our star was even rejected from the basketball team? It’s hard to believe right?
But, for every weakness or reject, Michael found a way to turn it into his strength. So, today we could know him as the greatest basketball player of all time.

4. Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey- one of the most respected Black American women in the world: Sexually abused at 9; Ran away from home at 13; pregnant at 14; Beauty queen at 17; abused drugs in her 20s; first black American woman on National T.V in America and Millionaire at 32. Sounds strange but true.

5. Thomas Edison

What would the world be like if Thomas Edison had given up trying to invent the light bulb?

He failed at it 10000 times so it would be easy to understand if he just gave up. But no, Thomas had to work harder than many of us. Actually, during all school duration, he had difficulty learning in a traditional teaching method and his teachers used to tell him that he was “too stupid to learn anything”. After that, he even was fired from his first two jobs because of too “unproductive” performance. Maybe this short story will wipe off your thought about the luck or amazing skills of Thomas Edison in your head as you used to think.
In spite of his troubles and failures, Thomas never stopped pursuing his dream.
He is now one of the most successful and influential and inspiring people in the world, not only having invented the light bulb, but also phonograph, moving camera along with many other things.

It’s easy to look at all the celebrities’ shots as they are on a higher level then you…that they are just born to success, and that for you, success is nothing but a fairy tale.
But when you take a real look at how these people came to be where they are, you’ll notice that most of them started with nothing just like you and I right now but a big dream and a heck of a strong will.

Besides, candidates can self-evaluate CVs based on HR professional advice:

They just take few seconds to take a look at it, so what a candidate needs to do is focus on the key factors. Find out what an HR care in a CV:

- The recent position: They usually try to find the newest job of a contestant and why he was attracted with this job. Was he fired? How long has he been there? Did it relate to position he was apply?

- Company reputation: A well-known company will help employers check information easier. In some cases, when they never heard about that company, they will read it more carefully which isn’t a big deal unless your CV is too bad.

- General experiences: Does the candidate gradually develop from time to time? Did their sense of responsible also raise when they got promoted? What was their experience suitable for this position?

- Keyword: This is a way to find the appropriate candidates. A fast and simple way: Ctrl+F (search) with few familiar keywords: MBA, PhD, Stanford, Java, iOS or anything you think of.

- Gap time: As long as you have a reasonable answer for your gap time. You developed your own project and totally failed? Too impress. Or you were home for 3 years to bring up your child or travel the world? No problem.
Remember, all we need is a specific reason, if not, we will think you were unemployed in that time.

- Your online available: Your private website, LinkedIn, Twitter, Github or Dribble or whatever you are in.

And in case the situation is improving, you decide to stay, you will not be ashamed of your behavior before. Remember: Do not "burn’s one bridges", whether you're dissatisfied with your boss and work.
