CrimeRCCG Pastor Sentenced To Two Years Imprisonment For Issuing $1.6m Dud Cheque by voiceoftheupcom(op): 10:54am On Sep 22, 2022
RCCG pastor sentenced to two years imprisonment for issuing $1.6m dud cheque

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has convicted and sentenced a pastor, Ayodeji Ibrahim Oluokun, to two years in prison.

The assistant pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), City of David Parish, Victoria Island, was jailed on Tuesday, September 21, 2022.

Oluokun’s conviction came, consequent on his arraignment by the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC, alongside his company, Peak Petroleum Industry Nigeria Limited, on an amended six-count charge bordering on issuance of dud cheques, stealing and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of $1.6 million on January 19, 2019.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, in her judgment, held that the prosecution had successfully proved the charge of issuance of a dud cheque against the defendants.
Taiwo, however, discharged and acquitted the defendants of stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

“The defendant issued two cheques in the sum of 1.6 million dollars to the nominal complainant, which was dishonoured because there was no fund in the defendant’s account. Issuance of a cheque for lack of credit is a strictly liable offence,” said Taiwo.

“If the defendant was truly expecting some money till the end of July 2014 as claimed by him, he would have waited till he received the money before issuing the cheque on June 24, 2014,”

The judge said the first defendant knew all of these and still went ahead to issue the cheque dated June 24, 2014.

“It is hereby in the view of this court that the defendant was deliberate in issuing the dud cheque. He is hereby found guilty of counts one and two of issuance of dud cheque.

“The defendants, however, are discharged and acquitted of stealing and obtaining money under false pretences as the prosecution failed to establish the facts against them,” she said.

The judge thereafter sentenced the first defendant to two years in prison or payment of a fine of N2 million, and the second defendant to a fine of N2 million.

She ordered the convict to make restitution of 1.6 million dollars to the nominal complainant within 18 months.

The defence counsel, Mr Edoka Onyeke, in his allocutus, prayed the court to grant the convict a non-custodial sentence, adding that he was a pastor and could use his pastoral work as service to humanity, through community service.

“My lord, apart from the defendant being a first offender, if he is incarcerated, he will not be able to carry out the necessary things on behalf of the second defendant so as to make the restitution easy.

“The first defendant is a pastor of a church. This is a very good opportunity for him to engage in community service instead of a custodian sentence so as to preach the word of God. On a final note, the defendant has promised to involve the nominal complainant in order to make the restitution,” Onyeke said.

Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Samuel Daji, however, urged the court to convict the defendants as charged.

He argued that the convict and the nominal complainant had not been on talking terms, thereby making the terms of restitution difficult to meet.

He also prayed the court to order the defendant to forfeit his property in order to pay up the debt.

“My lord, from the evidence before this court, the defendant is not committed. It has been nine good years my lord. A dollar was N150 at the time the loan was granted to the defendant. The defendant does not even greet the nominal complainant unless it is of utmost necessity.

“There is an evidence that the defendants never want to settle this case. The defence counsel said he is a pastor. My lord, the more reason he should be given a custodial sentence in order to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The court has stated mandatory sentence. We shall be asking for restitution. I shall be urging the court to order the defendant to forfeit his property so as to use it to pay his debt,” Daji said.

The EFCC counsel had submitted that the defendant issued a Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Ltd. cheque of 1.6 million dollars payable to GOSL Nigeria Ltd.

He said when presented for payment, the cheque was dishonoured on the ground that there were no sufficient funds standing to the credit of the account on which the cheque was drawn.

The offences contravened Sections 1(1) (b) of the Dishonoured Cheques (Offences) Act, Cap D 11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and Section 285 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State and section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences.

95.4m litres crude oil stolen daily – FG
https://makesensepromotions.com/95-4m-litres-crude-oil-stolen-daily-fg/

The federal government has given the number of litres of crude oil stolen daily in the country.

At an investigative public hearing on “Oil lifting, theft and the impact on petroleum production and oil revenues” chaired by Senator Bassey Akpan (YPP – Akwa Ibom North East), the Executive Commissioner, Corporate Services and Administration of the NUPRC, Mr Jide Adeola, said about 159 litres amounting to 600,000 barrels of crude oil are illegally siphoned per day.

Adeola further revealed that Nigeria produces 1.23million barrels of crude oil per day as against its 1.8million barrels target, leading to a total revenue loss of about $2.1billion or N877billion.

National President of PENGASSAN, Festus Osifo also claimed that oil theft was a collaborative crime between security personnel assigned to protect oil installations and the locals running illegal refineries.

Osifo called on petroleum regulatory agencies and various security outfits to be alive to their responsibilities to curtail the menace.

He said;

“ONE OF THE GREATEST PROBLEMS WE HAVE, WHICH NOBODY HAS HIGHLIGHTED IS THAT THERE IS STRONG CONNIVANCE OF OUR SECURITY FORCES IN THE CRIME.

“THERE IS NO DOUBT ABOUT THIS. FROM OUR ARMY TO OUR NAVAL OFFICERS, WE HAVE INFORMATION THAT THEY PAY THEIR SUPERIORS TO POST THEM TO SOME AREAS IN THE NIGER DELTA.

“I CAN AUTHORITATIVELY INFORM THIS COMMITTEE THAT MEN OF THE NIGERIAN ARMY AND THE NAVY PAY THEIR SUPERIORS TO BE POSTED TO NIGER DELTA.

“EVEN WHEN THE FORMER COMMANDER OF THE AMPHIBIOUS BRIGADE IN PORT HARCOURT WAS REMOVED, MANY OF THE MEN IN THE COMMAND RESISTED BEING POSTED OUT DUE TO LUCRATIVENESS OF THEIR OPERATIONAL AREAS.

“I THINK THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM ARE NOT EVEN THE ONES SITTING HERE. THEY ARE THE ONES YOU WILL INVITE BEHIND THE CAMERA.”

Chairman of the Adhoc Committee, Senator Samoan said: “The quota from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Country is about 3.3 million barrels per day but we are producing less than 1.3million per day. How do we meet our fiscal challenges?”

House of Reps members lament as Nigeria’s debt reaches an all-time high of N42.84trn
https://makesensepromotions.com/house-of-reps-members-lament-as-nigerias-debt-reaches-an-all-time-high-of-n42-84trn/

Members of the House of Representatives have expressed concern over the rising debt profile of Nigeria which currently stands at N42.84 trillion.

A breakdown of the debt figures released by the Debt Management Office DMO shows that the bulk of the federal government borrowings were done domestically, with 72.53 percent being FGN bonds. According to the DMO, Nigeria’s total public debt stock, comprising the debt obligations of the federal, state governments, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) rose by N1.24 trillion within three months, from N41.60 trillion ($100.07 billion) as at March 30, 2022 to N42.84 trillion ($103.31billion) by June 30, 2022.

The DMO also indicated that domestic debt stock for the review period stood at N26.23 trillion ($63.24 billion) due to new borrowings by the federal government to part-finance the deficit in the 2022 Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, including fresh borrowings by state governments and the FCT.

According to the DMO, Lagos state retained its top spot as the state with the highest debt stock with N797, 305,312,602.53 in its debt profile. Delta State is second with N378, 878,236,830.75, followed by Ogun State with N241, 782,021,304.96; Rivers State, N225, 505,011,356.83; and Imo State, N210, 394,836,519.93.

Akwa Ibom was next on the debtors’ scale with N203, 951,611,822.07, while Jigawa retained its least-indebted state profile with 45,135,377,621.30, and Ebonyi State trailed with N59, 111,939,636.77.

Reacting to this development, Gbajabiamilia at resumption of plenary yesterday, expressed concerns over the rising debt profile of the country and crude oil theft.

Gbajabiamila stated that the concerns emerged from interactive sessions of the Senate and House Committees on Finance with the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the government on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP). He said the issues emerged while considering the scope of deficit financing to be proposed in the new budget and the decline in crude oil production due to theft and sabotage.

Gbajabiamila said while the House appreciated that the current fiscal conditions necessitated borrowing to finance budgetary expenditures, there should be worry about the long-term effect of the debt burden on the country and the ability to pay in a responsible and sustainable way.

Mental health awareness: here are various kinds of depression
https://makesensepromotions.com/mental-health-awareness-here-are-various-kinds-of-depression/

A lot of people who are exerting too much of their brainpower usually exhaust not only their physical strength when engaging in various multi-tasking activities. They also tend to overextend their brains up to the point when it needs some good old time for relaxation. A lot of busy people who seem to cannot fathom the idea of relaxing and taking the time off from work, as well as their worries, tend to start having nervous breakdowns, anxiety, depression and all sorts of mental illnesses that can cause a person’s sanity to go haywire. Fortunately, if you are one of those who are unable to distress and are constantly worried and fussing over things, there are available cures and various treatments for treating anxiety and depression.

Anxiety depression is characterized by all sorts of irregularities and erratic behaviour from the person who is suffering from it, this is usually due to certain stress triggers that may tend to easily cause a person undue jitters and stress. Also, a lot of people who tend to get easily nervous over stressful activities are prone to having anxiety and depression. It is just a matter of being strong-willed when it comes to facing difficult and stress-prone activities. It may be pretty hard to overcome at first, but trying to be calm and cool in times of extreme pressure is what will save your mental health from going downward spiral.

When it comes to effectively curing one’s self of a mental illness, one must keep in mind that you have to be honest with yourself and assess what kind of depression or mental illness you have, go to a reputable therapist to get yourself diagnosed correctly as well as be able to get the right depression treatment for yourself. Here are the various types of depression:

1) Manic or Bipolar depression – characterized by sudden and extreme changes in one’s mood wherein one minute he or she is in an elevated state of euphoria while the next minute (day or week) he or she is feeling to be in a personal hell.

2) Postpartum depression – is characterized by a prolonged sadness and a feeling of emptiness by a new mother wherein physical stress during childbirth, and an uncertain sense of responsibility towards the newborn baby can be just some of the possible factors why some new mothers go through this.

3)Dysthymia – is characterized by a slight similarity with depression, although this time, it’s been proven to be a lot less severe, of course, in any case, should be treated immediately.

4)Cyclothymia – is characterized by a slight similarity with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the individual suffering from this mental illness may occasionally suffer from severe changes in one’s moods.

5)Seasonal Affective Disorder – characterized by falling into a rut only during specific seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall) studies, however, prove that more people fall into a rut more during the Winter and Fall seasons and lastly, Mood swings, wherein a person’s mood may shift from happy to sad to angry in just a short time.

But the type of depression that has been proven to be quite common among people is anxiety depression, which is characterized by the state of being overly anxious about things. Anxiety is supposedly normal behaviour that’ll help a person adjust more to a certain stressful activity like first date jitters or a gruelling exam the following day. Anxiety helps you get psyched up towards facing certain “difficult situations”; anxiety, therefore, is a good thing. Anxiety depression, however, is simply the opposite, not to be easily dismissed as a “case of the nerves”; Anxiety depression is in actuality an illness that can be caused by the biological makeup of an individual, or in other words, a hereditary illness.

Also, there are various types of Anxiety depression, each having its unique characteristics. Take for example Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD, this kind of Anxiety depression is a lot more complicated than the average Anxiety depression, despite possibly being a day-to-day habit for those who suffer from this kind of Anxiety depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder makes the individual quite more paranoid than usual, anxiety attacks are more frequent, even absurd at times. They can even be anxious even when there’s no apparent reason that calls for them to behave in such a way. People suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder show a lot of symptoms, from lack of sleep to being unable to relax, getting tired easily, cannot concentrate on what they’re doing and even suffering from depression. This kind of Anxiety depression is still curable; just a little work will do the trick.

Consult a reputable cognitive behaviour therapist who will help give the individual the therapy that he or she needs to help him or her loosen up, also prescribed medicines are sort of a must to help these individuals battle anxiety attacks, help them calm down and relax.

Prosecutors in New York have revealed how corrupt officers snuggles contraband substances into a notorious New York prison.

Two New York city correction officers also known as prison guards smuggled contraband cellphones and drugs to Bloods gang members on Rikers Island in exchange for thousands of dollars in bribes, according to federal prosecutors.

Krystle Burrell, 35, and Katrina Patterson, 31, were arrested Tuesday, April 5 after running separate schemes that involved different Rikers jails, the FBI said.

Between October 2020 and March 2021, prosecutors of the case said, Patterson meticulously planned dropoffs of contraband and received more than $30,000 from Imani Matthews, 25, and Ashley Medina, 24, two girlfriends of Michael Ross,a prisoner who was being held at Rikers island on criminal weapon possession charges.

Prosecutors say in one occasion, Patterson snuck in to Ross what she said were “4 black joints in 1 paper,” insisting to Matthews that “it better be wrapped so many times I don’t want to smell it,” prosecutors said.

On Nov. 10, 2020, investigators say they discovered nearly 50 grams of marijuana in Ross’ cell at the Robert N. Davoren Center on Rikers as well as a contraband cell phone, the feds said.

After the discovery, Ross was sent to solitary confinement, while Patterson was sent into a panic.

“Call me I gotta see you asap did he destroy the phone they found the phone and mad weed… they have the phone I hope he deleted everything,” Patterson wrote in a message to Medina.

Just 15 days after the bust in Ross’ cell, Patterson wanted to get back to smuggling contraband, prosecutors said.

“Tell him tomorrow if he ready to get back to business let me know,” she wrote to Matthews in a text message on Nov. 25.

Matthews and Medina paid Patterson through a money receiving app called CashApp, and Patterson was caught on video smuggling in bags of what prosecutors say was narcotics to inmates associated with Ross, the feds said.

Meanwhile the other officer, Burrell smuggled for Terrae Hinds, 28, another Bloods gang member, prosecutors said.

Burrell, a veteran of the Department of Correction smuggled Hinds two cellphones, one of which once belonged to her, the feds allege.

Burrell has also been accused of helping Hinds distribute narcotics while he was jailed at the Anna M. Kross Center.

Mattthews, Medina, Ross and Hinds have also been BB charged with bribery conspiracy in the case. All six defendants face up to five years in prison.

In a statement, New York city Correction Commissioner Louis Molina called the allegations against Patterson and Burrell “disturbing,” and noted that smuggling contraband is illegal and “puts everyone in our facilities at risk.”

“If these officers are found guilty they will be terminated and their shield numbers will never be worn again,” Molina said.

HealthThe Health Benefits Of Eating Groundnuts (peanuts) by voiceoftheupcom(op): 12:57pm On Feb 14, 2022
The health benefits of eating groundnuts (peanuts)

It is important to remember that, to really reap the potential rewards of groundnut, consuming unsalted peanuts is best. High levels of salt have negative health effects, and can contribute to high blood pressure amongst other concerns.
The Health Benefits of Peanuts:
1. Peanuts are rich in antioxidants

A study in the Longdom journal found that groundnut skins are rich in phenols, a form of antioxidant. Like other antioxidants, phenols are powerful substances that protect your cells against the harmful effects of free radicals.

According to a 2012 study from North Carolina University, published in the “Journal of Food Science,” it was reported that adding a 5 percent concentration of peanut (groundnut) skins to peanut butter significantly increased its antioxidant levels without sacrificing taste or texture.
2. The nuts are rich in heart-healthy fats

High cholesterol causes fatty deposits in your arteries, which can eventually lead to heart disease. Groundnuts contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that may keep the heart healthy, by helping to lower blood cholesterol levels.
3. Groundnuts are a high source protein

Protein is an essential component of our diet, since there are over 10,000 types of protein in our bodies. Peanuts have been shown to be an extremely high source of plant protein, and they are often incorporated into the diets of vegetarians and protein deficient people.
4. They are a rich source of minerals

Peanut is a rich source of minerals, including magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, calcium, sodium, etc. These minerals are essential to many processes in the body, and an adequate supply of these minerals minimises the risk of mineral deficiency diseases.
5. Peanuts are rich in folate

The high levels of folate in groundnut could make them particularly beneficial during pregnancy, since studies have shown that folate can reduce the incidence of birth defects and anaemia related conditions. (Always follow your medical practitioner’s advice during pregnancy.)
6. Groundnuts may help with weight loss

While peanuts are high in calories, they are also rich in fibre and protein, factors that increase and prolong satiety (the sensation of being full and satisfied). This means that having a small number of peanuts as a snack helps to reduce your overall food intake, compared to say the equivalent amount of calories consumed through a chocolate bar.
7. The nuts may have antidepressant qualities

Research published by the European Journal of Nutrition has shown that regular nut consumption resulted in a 66% lower risk of anxiety in men. This may be due to the high level of tryptophan in peanuts. Tryptophan increases the level of serotonin in the brain, which mirrors the action of some antidepressants, so it is thought that peanuts may also have a role in relieving depression.
The Beauty Benefits of Groundnut:
1. Groundnut may help with eczema

Groundnuts may improve inflammatory skin concerns like eczema, because peanuts boast a high level fatty acids, which may help to make your skin feel better, and look healthier by decreasing inflammation.
2. They may have anti-aging effects

Peanuts contain vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that may help slow down the aging process. Antioxidants work by protecting cells against the damaging effects of free radicals.
3. Peanuts may promote skin elasticity

Groundnut contains Vitamin C which is an essential factor in the synthesis of collagen, a main component in the structure of connective tissues. Maintaining healthy collagen levels helps to keep skin firm and elastic, so eating peanuts may help keep your skin looking young and supple.

It’s really simple to consume groundnuts by shelling and eating the nut inside, but as an alternative, you can also easily make peanut butter at home.
Peanut butter recipe ingredients

300 grams unsalted shelled peanuts / groundnuts
Pinch to 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 to 2 teaspoons honey
1 to 3 teaspoons peanut or vegetable oil, if needed

Peanut butter recipe directions

Roast the peanuts in the oven at 350F/175C/Gas Mark 4 for 3 to 5 minutes, then let them cool.
Add the roasted groundnuts to the food processor. Process for 3-4 minutes.
Add the salt and honey then process until combined.
Check the consistency, if it seems too thick, add oil, a teaspoon at a time until it is right for you.

CrimeDifferent Types Of Phone Thieves In Lagos by voiceoftheupcom(op): 9:10am On Jan 19, 2022
Different types of phone thieves in Lagos

Here are different types of phone thieves;
1. The Regular pickpocket

A friend at work, kept his phone in his pocket as he was about to get off a bus. When he got off, his phone was not in his pocket anymore.

The vital rule is never to leave your phone in your pocket. There are many instances where your phone can be taken from your pocket.

For example, your phone can be picked up when you are rushing to enter a bus, when you are getting off a bus or when you are just standing at the bus stop.
2. The rush to enter a bus thief

This is a skill properly perfected by petty thieves.

One day, I was at the bus stop in Ojota when a small yellow bus passed with the driver screaming “Maryland!” and more than 20 people rushed to enter the bus.

I was a casual observer because I knew my chance at getting a seat was hopeless. But as I walked towards the bus after the rush, I saw a lady was frantically searching for her phone. In the rush, her bag was opened and her phone was carefully lifted.
3. The pastor or imam who is also a thief

Here you will meet a prophet who knows everything about your life. “Yes,” he says, “You were born on a Tuesday, your mother’s name is Bisi, she is the only dark-skinned woman in your village,” and all such details.

How the heist will be carried out will be so skilful, you would have given your phone out unknowingly.

Perhaps, the truth will dawn on you when you get to your house.

This is why you should never answer anyone who asks you for directions. Just face your front.
4. The finders keeper
If you forgot your phone in a vehicle or anywhere else, it is only the grace of God that would make you find it again in that same spot.
5. The traffic or roadside robber
Imagine being stuck in traffic or walking on the road and suddenly a tout asks you for a phone while brandishing a knife or gun; there is nothing to do but to hand it over.
6. The home robbers

These ones are so bold to come into your home and ask you for your phone as if they bought it for you.

Extra care is required to keep your phone safe or in extreme cases you have to move out of Lagos to a saner city

PhonesRugged And Addictive Memories From Old School Phones by voiceoftheupcom(op): 8:48am On Jan 19, 2022
Rugged and addictive memories from old school phones

1. Batteries that never die

This phone’s battery never dies [Wikipedia]

These days we buy generators and power banks just to make sure our phones are powered all day because our batteries can barely last a day.

In those days, we could go days without charging our phones, especially the almighty Nokia 3310.
2. Mobile games

Before social media, all you could do was receive calls, send text messages and play games on your phone. Those games like football, snake, sudoku were our relief from boredom.
3. Flip phones

Flip phones were for the rich [Cnet]

Flip phones had this special allure. They were the iPhone 13 of that age. If you had a flip Motorola phone then you were simply rich!
4. Nokia xpressmusic

Xpress music was for music lovers [Wikipedia]

By this time, mobile data was now a thing. If you had 10MB, you were rich and could download some music and games.

Xpressmusic phones were the coolest phone for music lovers. They also became handy when the social network 2go became popular.
5. Then came BlackBerry
Blackberries were the IT phones [Kickmobile]
This special phone had so many memories attached to it. People could access Facebook from their phones, they did not have to go to cyber cafes.

It took about 10 minutes to boot, and when the battery gets low, it says “Battery too low for radio use.”

Another fun part of BlackBerry phones was the BBN pin. People asked for BBN pins to chat with you and you even memorised it like a phone number.

It affected our lexicon too, we even started saying things like “ping” and “pinging.”

Now technology has moved on so fast from those humble beginnings, the things we can do with our phones now are limitless.

Romance5 Signs Your Relationship Is Strong Enough For Marriage by voiceoftheupcom(op): 9:49am On Jan 18, 2022
5 signs your relationship is strong enough for marriage
source: https://makesensepromotions.com/5-signs-your-relationship-is-strong-enough-for-marriage/

Let’s go through five signals that your relationship is strong enough for marriage.

It doesn’t feel scary

It’s very acceptable to be anxious about any major life decision. When you’re ready to get married, though, the idea shouldn’t intimidate you. It will appear large and bizarre, but it will not be frightening. It’s a good sign that you’re in the appropriate place to take the leap when you can see your future with someone and it feels natural.

You are completely comfortable with them

If you’re getting married, you need to feel at ease in every aspect. This includes being able to unwind and spend a night together, expressing your thoughts, and, most importantly, expressing your genuine emotions. You should also feel at ease being sick and a little gross in front of your partner, as well as being comfortable taking care of them when they are ill.

Your communication skills are in great shape

Strong communication is the only ability that will prepare you for getting engaged or married better than any other skill. Although this is certainly vital, communication is more than just feeling that what you’re saying is being heard and considered. You’ll be better able to deal with whatever comes your way if you can communicate. When you have strong communication, anything that can happen gets a lot easier.

You’ve hit rough spots and gotten through them

When a couple never fights, it’s either because one (or both) of you is hiding your feelings and deferring to the other. Alternatively, it could indicate that you haven’t been together long enough to understand how to deal with stress. When you have courteous arguments with each other and get over the issue, you can learn a great deal about each other.

People are asking

If others start asking if you’re engaged, especially those you care about and trust, it could be a sign that you act and appear like a couple who really should be engaged.

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Wednesday reopened its Olusosun Landfill after carrying out a comprehensive upgrade.

Speaking on the reopening, the managing director/CEO of LAWMA, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, said the temporary closure of the landfill became necessary to prepare it for the anticipated increase in waste disposal activities during the forthcoming Yuletide festivities.

He said: “December will have more influx of trucks due to the volume of waste that would be generated during the period. 70 per cent of waste generated in Lagos is deposited at Olusosun. Turnaround time is very crucial for waste management, the tipping platform has to be very stable, so that waste disposal does not take more than 10 minutes. And the authority is working to ensure that 10 trucks can tip at once.”

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, The LAWMA boss further stated that the palliative measures would be extended to other dumpsites across the metropolis, starting from Solous dumpsite, Igando, which would also be shut down in a couple of days, for the same maintenance work.

He appealed to Lagos residents to bear with the authority, adding that any inconvenience occasioned by the ongoing maintenance of the landfills was for the purpose of better service delivery.

In another development, Odumboni also yesterday received an award from the National Association of Online Security News Publishers, for his efforts at repositioning LAWMA since he assumed leadership.

It was presented during the National Security Conference/Awards event, tagged: “A Nation Under Siege: Activating Technology and Local Intelligence To Solve Conundrum”, held at the NECA House, Alausa-Secretariat, Ikeja.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CHANGES LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY PROJECT COMPLETION DATE
source : http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/09/federal-government-changes-lagos-ibadan.html
The Federal Government will no longer meet its December 2018 date for the completion of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project.
This was disclosed by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Adedamola Kuti, in an interview.
The Federal Government had earlier promised to deliver the project by the end of 2018.
The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, was one of the government officials who had stated the completion date.
Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, Kuti told newsmen that owing to the change in scope of work, the road will now be completed in December 2019.
He said: “The end of 2018 is no longer feasible; what we have is that the government has awarded additional work that is not part of the original contract. When the contract was first awarded, we did not take into consideration the religious organisations that are springing up rapidly in the area.
“So now, we have to make provision for toll gates, flyovers and plazas, among other additions. So, the completion date has been extended. We need additional one year to complete the work that has been added.”
Kuti also adduced reasons for the slow pace of work.
He said: “This is construction work; the pace of work is usually slower during rainy season. Once a material is wet, you must allow it to dry before it can be used.
“Instead of people to complain about the pace of work, they should consider the fact that the contractor is on site and we are moving.”

BusinessAbcon Kicks As Banks Suspend Bdcs’ Accounts Over Tax Remittance by voiceoftheupcom(op): 7:04am On Sep 04, 2018
ABCON KICKS AS BANKS SUSPEND BDCS’ ACCOUNTS OVER TAX REMITTANCE
source : http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/09/abcon-kicks-as-banks-suspend-bdcs.html

The Association of Bureau de Change Operators of Nigeria has kicked against the on-going banks’ suspension of bureau de change (BDC) accounts and demanded for tax remittances on turnover volumes.
Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, ABCON President, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, said banks are acting under the directive of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to demand that BDCs pay taxes on funds used to bid for their dollar allocations sent to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on weekly basis through the commercial banks.
The ABCON boss said many banks had written BDC operators and are implementing a ‘Post No Debit’ order on the operators’ accounts, even where there is no evidence of tax default.
“The BDCs are high turnover sector and their funding cash for dollar collections cannot be subjected to taxes. An average BDC does over N30 million weekly turnover and paying taxes on such funds will affect their cash flow and ability to meet their statutory role of foreign exchange supply to the retail-end of the market,” he said.
He said many of the affected BDC operators are already facing major funding challenges that need to be addressed immediately by concerned stakeholders.
“In fact, we will be writing to the Central Bank of Nigeria –CBN- to complain about the illegal policy of the ‘Post No Debit’. Presently, most of our members funding with the deposit money banks for their bidding obligations are being trapped in the banks. This scenario if not checked, will affect our members funding capacity, derail the sustainability of their businesses with the resultant liquidity spikes,” he said.
A letter from one of the commercial banks, stated: “The bank has pursuant to section 49 of the Companies Income Tax Act LFN 2004 and Section 28, 29 and 31 of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (Establishment) Act No. 13 of 2007 been appointed by the Executive Chairman of the FIRS as collection Agent over your accounts.
“Please, be informed that consequent on this directive, we are compelled by law to place ‘Post No Debit’ on your account pending the receipt of further instructions from the Executive Chairman of FIRS. This is for your information and necessary action as you are best advised to contact the FIRS officials.”
According to Gwadabe, the new trend in collecting taxes from BDCs is unacceptable and must be stopped. He said that ABCON will be writing CBN to call the banks and other parties implementing the directive to order.
“The banks did not asked the BDCs to bring evidence of tax payment before they act. Value Added Tax -VAT- Exempt for BDCs is applicable in other climes and should also be practiced in Nigeria. The non-implementation of tax exempt in Nigeria is affecting the capacity of BDCs to effectively meet the foreign exchange demands at the retail-end of the market,” he said.
He said ABCON will continue to implement zero tolerance for non-compliance with regulatory requirement and unethical conduct amongst its members but will not sit idly and watch the businesses built by its members destroyed by illegal policy like the ‘Post No Debit’ order.
The ABCON, he added, has also created the office of Compliance Officer at its National Secretariat and in all its Zonal Offices to discipline operators that fail to comply with set regulations.
Gwadabe said the BDC sector is critical for continued stability in the foreign exchange market adding that the working of many developed economies is highly dependent on the activities of BDCs and Nigeria should not be an exception.
He said the BDCs have so far stamped their role as key players in the foreign exchange market, where they remain major economic drivers creating employment and wealth for Nigerians.
These contributions, he added, require that the operations of BDCs be supported to sustain ongoing market rally and stability.

EX-GOVERNOR KALU: STOP PLAYING POLITICS WITH RELIGION, TRIBE
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/08/ex-governor-kalu-stop-playing-politics.html

Former Governor of Abia State and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Saturday asked Nigerians to stop play politics with religion.

During the visit, Kalu commended the governor for showing respect to President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders in the country irrespective of political affiliations.
According to the reports gathered by Eyes Of Lagos, He explained the reason behind his vision the Enugu Government House despite belonging to different political party with the governor, noting that he was just on a routine visit.
He said: “I pass through here. I also tell the President and Commander-in-Chief that I am going to him. There is no way I can come to Enugu without passing through here, more over he (Ugwuanyi) is a very close friend of mine.
This is like a home to all Igbos. This is the headquarters of Igbo land. I am in very good terms with the governor, not just because he is a governor. You know MV Neya and MV Sophia Maria when he was Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Marine Transport, he commissioned them in Malaysia.
“So, people should stop playing politics of tribe. We go to the same church. He is a catholic. I am a catholic. I wish him well; I hope he is also wishing President Buhari well.”
Kalu expressed delight at the friendship the governor has maintained with political leaders across the board, stressing that such uncommon leadership style has brought peace and development to Enugu State.
He said Ugwuanyi “is a very close friend of mine and we are family irrespective of the fact that they are in different political parties. I am in very good terms with the governor of Enugu State, even before he became a governor.”
Kalu disclosed that Buhari took Ugwuanyi as a family, declaring that there “is no point to quarrel with anybody who is not quarreling with us. I look at Ugwuanyi as a family member.
“So, I do not expect him to be in the same political party with me. He is of PDP. I am of APC. But we maintain the friendship. It is across the board,” Kalu noted.
