Romance / Why Do People Fuss Over Engagement Rings? by vycee01: 3:18pm On May 19, 2015
If you feel puzzled enough to check on ‘Wikipedia’ you will find that an engagement ring is a ring indicating that the person wearing it is engaged to be married. It represents a formal agreement to future marriage. The woman’s ring is presented as an engagement gift by a man to his prospective spouse while he proposes marriage or directly after she accepts his marriage proposal. That is according to current conventions.

However, in African culture engagement rings are common because it is a pledge of love and is a symbol that a woman is no longer available to be courted by other men. The act of wearing an engagement ring lets other men know that the woman’s feelings are “engaged by somebody else.” This is basically a big fat “keep off” sign worn on the hand of the betrothed to keep “wolves” at bay.

Many people feel that the engagement and the offering of an engagement ring to a woman are extremely important. In western societies a woman wears the engagement ring on her left hand, on the second last finger. This is the same finger that her wedding ring will be placed on during the wedding ceremony.

It is believed that the ancient Romans began the practice of placing the engagement ring on the left ring finger, which they believed contained the “vena amoris” or vein of love which supposedly connected directly to the heart. Other ancient cultures, including the Egyptians, also used such symbolism, and even today the tradition persists both with engagement rings and wedding bands. In fact, wedding bands are placed first on the left ring finger to be closest to the heart.

Wearing an engagement ring is one exciting thing most Nigerian young ladies can be proud of. Some of them see a relationship without an engagement ring as a not too serious one. For some ladies to be sure of the man’s love for them and his seriousness about settling down an engagement ring is required.

Generally speaking, most ladies today see engagement ring as a big deal, as they see it as very romantic and charming when they are presented a ring by their patners. But in some cases, not all engagement rings promises marriage as some patners are either too young to be married, not ready to take responsibilities or find out they were too quick with their decisions.

Now the question is; what does the idea of engagement ring really mean to you? Is the ring that important? Why?

In my quest to understand this issue of engagement ring, I spoke to some ladies who admitted that wearing an engagement ring could represent the bond of everlasting love, while others can’t wait to have theirs on their fingers.

Sarah said “I have been with my boyfriend for over a year. He engaged me in April and I really loved it! Therefore if someone is willing to entrust a ring to you then you know you’re worth the world to him.”

Ope said “I have been with my boyfriend for about six months if he was to give me an engagement ring for future reasons, I would be glad, at least it will show his love for me”.

Adebisi who got engaged last December said, “I love my ring (a lot!), but I think the important thing about an engagement is the commitment made by both people.

“My fiancé made it very clear that when he proposed he was promising me that he would never give up on me and do whatever it takes to make our marriage work, and when I accepted I was making the same promise to him.

“Just so you know am getting married in August.”

A lady who seemed to jittery to share her name along with her opinion said “It is very ridiculous, because it’s really hard to tell how your life is going to be when you are engaged and that young.

“Believe it or not I have a boyfriend and I would really like to marry him but I am not going to attach myself to an idea that I need a ring to prove his love for me, it really just depends on what God’s plan is for the two of us”.

Bola Olumegbon said, “When you’re still with the person, it’s kind of like a wedding ring; it’s a very personal and sentimental band of love around your finger to remind you of your guy all day. But what happens if you break up? Believe me; it gives you more trouble than you could ever ask for.”

Talking to these young people was pretty exciting so much was revealed during our discussions. I was also really surprised at how young people in this very unstable world seemed focused on love, relationships and the fallout from both.

For me, the engagement ring is a sign that I am taken and it doubles as a gift to commemorate a new stage in my life and relationship. When all is said and done it’s the vows that actually have real meaning to me.

Well, those were opinions expressed by other young people on what the idea of an engagement ring represents. I do wonder, what are yours?

Romance / Why Nigerian Men Cheat by vycee01: 2:25pm On May 09, 2015
Why Nigerian men cheat by Damilola Faleke

Man cheating
Most women often ask this question; why do men cheat? Surely, not all men are cheating. Some of them are however more likely get involved in an affair.

Cheating is perhaps the greatest form of betrayal. It’s painful and hard to forgive especially hard to forget. It destroys the trust that has likely been built over the years between couples. It’s the most painful way to hurt a love partner. Knowing this why do they do it anyway? Why do men cheat in a relationship and in marriage?

What do you expect the incoming government of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to handle first?

Treas and Giesen (2000) found that the likelihood of sexual infidelity was higher for those who had stronger sexual interests, more permissive sexual values, lower subjective satisfaction with their partner, weaker network ties to their partner, and greater sexual opportunities. Studies suggest around 30–40% of unmarried relationships and 18–20% of marriages see at least one incident of sexual infidelity. Men are more likely than women to have a sexual affair, regardless of whether or not they are in a married or unmarried relationship.

The truth is sometimes the men don’t really need a reason to cheat. It’s a matter of character. Men who cheat generally are selfish, self-centered and immature.

Different people define cheating in many ways; you have cheated when you involve yourself in something intimate with someone who is not your spouse. Acts like kissing, contact that involves genitals, staring at another lustfully and exchanging erotic messages with another all constitute one form of cheating or another.

cheater-462x450I recently spoke to a friend of mine, asking him why guys find it normal to cheat on their partners, he replied me saying; “Nobody likes eating just one fruit, they prefer taking lots of fruits. Would you prefer I eat cucumber alone than take fruit salad? No! I just love the combination of different fruits.”

His answer may have been amusing but it left me dazed. He claimed that 88% of Nigerian men cheat, whether married or in a relationship. Yes ladies cheat too but not as obvious as the male counterparts.

Remember that once you are caught cheating in your relationship, you have broken the trust of that relationship. It then becomes difficult for your partner to be physically and emotionally involved with you. I agree that there are several reasons that lead to men cheating on their spouse. I have heard people say they did it for revenge, while others fall out of love or they find someone they love more.

Counselor Gary Neuman asked 200 cheating and non-cheating husbands about why they cheated. He found that 77% of cheating men have a good friend who also cheated.

“Some partners give in easily to the temptation to cheat because that is what their friends and family do. You should not judge a guy by what those around him do, but don’t underestimate the power of influence.”

According to anthropologist Helen Fisher, there are numerous psychological reasons for adultery. Some people may want to supplement a marriage, solve a sex problem, gather more attention, seek revenge, or have more excitement in the marriage.

Based on Fisher’s research, there also is a biological side to adultery. “We have two brain systems: One of them is linked to attachment and romantic love, and then there is the other brain system, which is purely sex drive.” Sometimes these two brain systems are not well connected, which enables people to become adulterers and satisfy their sex drive without any regards to their attachment side.

lipstickAfter several surveys and discoveries and maybe personal experience too, I decided to state my own reasons why I think men cheat.

Below are the reasons why Nigerian men find cheating as something interesting;

A lot of Nigerian men believe that with money they can get any girl. When they start earning a lot of money, the desire for a side chick grows. Money definitely can be very tempting. A guy begins to think he could have everything he wants with money.

Some men are born to flirt: Flirting is in their veins. He can be happily married with kids but still derive pleasure in chasing other women.

To boost his ego: Infidelity is an ego boost for a man with low self esteem, especially if he’s less successful or earns less money than his partner.

Peer pressure: He spends a lot of time in the company of people who cheat. Just like Dr Neuman said, his colleagues, close friends are all cheating on their mates. So he succumbs to peer pressure and cheats to be part of the crowd.

Sex Starved: People think sex is overrated in a relationship, while others think there are many reasons why sex is important with your spouse. When you are in love, it can connect the two of you in a way unlike any other, but when you deprive your partner from having it to their satisfaction; they look for alternative partners to provide the thrill.

An addiction to sex: According to Psychcentral., “Sexual addiction is best described as a progressive intimacy disorder characterized by compulsive sexual thoughts and acts. Like all addictions, its negative impact on the addict and on family members’ increases as the disorder progresses. Over time, the addict usually has to intensify the addictive behavior to achieve the same results.” Many uses this opportunity to cheat on their partner, but it is not an excuse to cheat on your spouse, and it is no reason to remain in a relationship.

The view that it is all a game: He’s a hardcore cheater for whom cheating is a way of life. He likes having lots of women and pitting one against the other. To him, it’s just a game.

To prove his manhood: Some men think that the more women they have sex with, the manlier they are. They think cheating is the macho thing to do.

The influence of drugs or alcohol: A great deal of infidelity (especially one night stands) can be attributed to the influence drugs or alcohol, which can never lower inhibitions and impair good judgement, resulting in behavior the cheater may later regret.

Revenge: Though revenge cheating is more common with women than with men, sometimes a man will cheat to get back at a wife or girlfriend who once cheated on him.

Some girls want to be more than just being friends: Some of his female friends want something more than friendship. They know he is in relationships, nevertheless they dream about becoming his wife. And if they are being too nice with him an affair could happen.

And just so we’re clear, infidelity is wrong. For men who cheat, no reason is valid for cheating on your mate because cheating above all else is an act of disrespect, cowardice and betrayal.

Building with your current partner should be held in sacred regard, not as a deal that has already been “snagged” and can be ignored.

I will compel all nominees for political appointment to declare their assets – Buhari

Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, President-Elect
President elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has recently announced that all candidates seeking for political appointment in his administration will be compelled to declare their assets before taking office and before leaving.

Buhari, who disclosed this in an interview with Sahara TV on Sunday, April 12, said the total disclosure would encourage accountability and reduce corruption in the system.

He said, “All those that were Governors, Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Head of foreign staff and all those with political appointments will have to declare their assets on the assumption of their appointment and definitely with the courts.

“And once they leave they have to re-declare their assets.”

He asserted that his administration would not “become embroiled in investigation of every ministry, and then not have time to move forward.”

You face “violent and drastic extinction” if Buhari does not win – Buhari supporters to AIT, RayPower Fm
By postnigeria - Feb 11, 2015 48

Supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate for the March 28 elections, Muhammadu Buhari, have issued threats against Daar communications Plc.

Daar Communications Plc. is the owner of the African Independent Television, AIT, and RayPower fm.

The group, which calls itself Coalition of Northern Nigeria Muslim Youths, has threatened to attack Daar’s investments in northern Nigeria.

As is characteristic of supporters of the retired General, the group said Daar communications staff and investments will face violent and drastic extinction, unless General Muhammadu Buhari emerges victorious in the postponed general elections.

The letter, which was issued by one Abdulkadir Idris, warned the media group that it had crossed ‘a deadly line’ in its operations.

It is not clear exactly what AIT has done that incurred the wrath of the group, but speculations abound that it is the Buhari documentary, “THE REAL BUHARI” that has motivated the group to issue the threat.

This would not be the first time perceived supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential aspirant, President Goodluck Jonathan, would received threats from Buhari sympathizers.

Last year in December, a source within PDP said, “What is really worrying those of us who are perceived to be pro-Jonathan’s governors or supporters is the open threat messages being made directly to our phones.”

It was learnt that some radical Northern leaders have also been sending threat messages to some of their Governors and leaders believed to be working for Jonathan’s victory in the 2015 poll to stop the support or be dealt with.

If this is what supporters of the APC candidate are bold enough to do without power, Nigerians fear to imagine the terror they would unleash on their opponents if they were to gain control of the state apparatus.

Renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Gumi, revealed that since he criticised the APC candidate, he started to receive death threats from the politician’s supporters, an incident that did not happen when he criticised the President.

Gumi had told the retired General, that he is a divisive factor in the 2015 elections, and adviced him to step down for a younger and more liberal candidate.

Politics / Buhari Certificate: Turn Yourself In To The Police – Fani-kayode by vycee01: 7:41pm On Jan 22, 2015
Buhari Certificate: Turn yourself in to the Police – Fani-Kayode

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has alleged that General Muhammadu Buhari, rtd, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, committed falsehood and lied on oath.

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, the Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP campaign Organization, asked Buhari to withdraw from the election and formally apologize to Nigerians.

Femi Fani-Kayode advised Buhari to report himself to the nearest police station, adding that the military must strip him of his ranks and privileges.

According to him, the papers presented never qualified General Buhari to be in the Nigerian military as a commissioned Officer and that if he fails to report to the Police, the PDP would then hand him over to God.

He said: “Information reaching us now has shown that the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed in Kano at a press conference that the affidavit he swore to in which he claimed that his credentials were in the custody of the military was not true after all.

“The implication of the action of this so-called “Mr. Clean” is nothing but perjury and we all know that this is a grave criminal offense under our laws and constitution,

“We urge Buhari and his party to do the right thing and tender an unreserved apology to the Nigerian people, throw in the towel and report to the nearest police station for interrogation and prosecution,

“Anything less than that would be an insult to the collective intelligence and integrity of the Nigerian people. We also urge the Nigerian Armed Forces to consider the possibility of stripping him of his rank and privileges given the fact that he was never qualified to join the Nigerian army as a commissioned officer in the first place because he never had the prerequisite qualifications which was a school certificate.

“Given this, at best Buhari should never have been anything more than a non-commissioned officer.”

The PDP spokesperson was reacting to statements by the Nigerian military that though Buhari received the West African School Certificate in 1961, copies of his credentials could not be found in Army records.

The APC presidential candidate while speaking to newsmen asked the officials of the Government College, Katsina, to produce copies of his education certificate.

Government College, formerly Provincial Secondary School, Katsina, has released Buhari’s secondary school certificate examination results, which have turned out to be fake.

Politics / 2015 Elections: Jonathan Will Win – U.S Think-tank by vycee01: 3:36pm On Jan 19, 2015
2015 Elections: Jonathan will win – U.S think-tank

Brookings, the World’s most influential think-tank based in the United States has predicted the victory of President Goodluck Jonathan over General Muhammadu Buhari in the February 14 polls.

This was revealed in Brookings publication entitled: Foresight Africa – Top Priorities for the continent (January 2015). According to the analysis of the publication, the election will be competitive but President Jonathan will emerge the winner.

“Though the election is expected to be very competitive, the odds still favour President Jonathan.”

Brookings revealed that the sole aim of the opposition party, All Progressive Congress, APC, is to return power to the North.

“The party is, however, a fragile one that seems united only in its quest to wrest the presidency from Jonathan or to have power ‘returned’ to the North.

“The APC gets much of its strength from tap-ping into anti-Jonathan sentiments in the Muslim North and grievances among the Yoruba who feel that the Jonathan administration has ignored them in key political appointments.”

Analysis of the Brooking publication noted that the APC’s strategy is to win the North West, North East and battle the South West. He however predicts that contrary to speculations by the APC supporters, Bola Tinubu, who seems to be the party’s strongest mobilizer in the South West, will not win the region.

The analysis however, rated President Jonathan high: “despite Boko Haram — the country is thriving: The economy continues to grow and—with the re- basing of its GDP — became the largest economy in Africa and the 26th largest in the world. Jonathan’s supporters also point to his success in containing the Ebola virus, which earned him commendations from countries and institutions around the world.”

The report added that incumbency factor and numerical control of PDP states which is 21 ahead of the APC which has only 14 states, gives the PDP an edge.

The report concluded by advising the country to put all efforts to ensure that the February polls are free, fair, transparent and peaceful.

If Buhari has cancer, then we must all pray for him – PDP

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP has challenged the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to comment on the state of his health.

This call was made in Abuja on Sunday, by the Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Femi Fani-Kayode. He challenged Buhari to come clean on his health and certificate, which is a standard practice in the world.

The former aviation minister stressed that the PDP was not making any allegation but only calling for clarity on an issue that is of great concern.

His words “We are not impressed by the fact that his campaign organisation and his party have tried to speak for him on this matter,” the spokesperson said in reference to statements by the APC that Mr. Buhari was hale and hearty.

“We would prefer that General Buhari himself clears the air and tells Nigerians himself that he is not mortally ill.

“The rumour that he is suffering from prostate cancer is exceptionally worrying and it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to pray for him if this rumour is true,” Mr. Fani-Kayode said.

Meanwhile, a VANGUARD reports disclosed that Buhari has been diagnosed of cancer, which has been debunked by sources close to him. According to reports, “Buhari is reported to have filled an online application for the United States of America Visa to enable him travel to the country around January 26 for medical scrutiny”
Fani-Kayode has however insisted despite claims by aids close to GMB that Nigerians deserves to know details about health and certificate saga.

He said “In this day and age, nothing ought to be swept under the carpet.

“We are therefore constrained to urge him to prove to Nigerians that he is really as fit as a fiddle by taking a brisk walk,’’ adding that Buhari could go jogging around the perimeter of the stadium before any of his rallies to prove that he is fit.

Politics / APC Cabal Abandons Buhari, Reveals True Colours Metuh by vycee01: 11:42pm On Jan 17, 2015
APC cabal abandons Buhari reveal true colours, Metuh says

Buhari Muhammadu, Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwakwanso
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said in a statement released today that the All Progressives Congress, APC, have subtly revealed their true feelings for their presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, who released the statement on Saturday said that it is obvious that the APC do not really believe in their candidate as important party chieftains like Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former presidential aspirant, Sam Nda-Isaiah have all abandoned the retired General’s campaign.

Metuh pointed out that even those still with him, like Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has unwittingly declared his preference for a younger and more educated candidate, when he stated that PDP gubernatorial candidate for Lagos, Jimi Agbaje, who is just 57, was too old to govern Lagos state.

Metuh called it ‘the height of hypocrisy’, as the same person is now campaigning for a 73 year-old person to handle Nigeria.

“Is this not, as many Nigerians put it, a coded way of saying Buhari is now way too old for Aso Rock?” the PDP said.

Metuh also recalled how El-Rufai complained in an interview a while back that he was 25 when Buhari was President and asked when a younger generation would rule the nation.

“I don’t understand that at all and I call on young people of Nigeria to take their future into their hands and ensure that in the next election, they vote for a new generation of leaders. The whole world is now being ruled by young people,” Metuh quoted el-Rufai.

To drive home his point of APC being hypocrites, Metuh again recalled how Bola Ahmed Tinubu had revealed his disdain for Buhari back in 2011 and had also questioned Buhari’s integrity and flexibility over their botched power sharing deal in 2011.

He (Tinubu) had said ‘“I don’t believe a man running for the president of Nigeria and not the Emir-ship of Katsina should not have the needed flexibility. To be a good leader, you have to be flexible and accommodating.”

The PDP described the current relations between the Tinubu and Buhari as a marriage of ‘strange bedfellows’ driven by Tinubu’s quest to gain access to the economic and political interests of the nation.

Metuh reiterated that APC was full of deceitful persons who specialize in lies and cheap blackmail to achieve their objectives.

He gave instances where the party had lied in public, only to be found out, stating that the APC lied that Kwankwaso was denied landing in Ekiti to attend the party’s rally when he was actually in Kano.

The party also lied about the age of their 57 year-old youth leader, and when the party last year accused the Federal Government of deploying the Department of State Service, DSS, in Osun state ahead of the August 9, 2014 governorship election, when in actual fact, it was the APC governor of Osun state who requested their presence.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to remember that the APC is a party of dubious and unreliable persons pursuing narrow and parochial interests, who recently devised means to hack into INEC’s data-base, clone the Permanent Voters Card and manipulate the outcome of the elections.

He urged Nigerians to rally round President Goodluck Jonathan who has shown his commitment to all national issues.
