Two individuals were caught attempting to vandalize electricity infrastructure in Aba, leading to one of them being electrocuted in the process. The incidents, which occurred in Osisioma and Aba North Local Government Areas (LGAs), highlight increasing community vigilance in protecting critical infrastructure. According to Edise Ekong, the Brand and Communication Manager for Aba Power, one of the vandals, Obioma Joseph Nwadinma, in his 20s, met his demise while attempting to steal upriser cables from a 500kva distribution transformer at Abayi-Ogbuligba Junction near Ariaria Junction in Osisioma LGA. The young man was electrocuted as he tried to escape the scene, leaving his family and community in disgrace. In a separate incident, another individual, Isaac Ude, was caught red-handed tampering with prepaid meters at the Tonimas Building, located at 10 Diobu Avenue off Aba-Owerri Road in Aba North LGA. Vigilant residents raised an alarm and promptly notified the police and Aba Power’s security team, who apprehended the suspect. “These incidents demonstrate the growing awareness among communities about the need to protect electricity infrastructure as their collective property,” Ekong remarked. He praised the residents for their swift actions, noting that such vigilance was critical in curbing vandalism and ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply. Ekong lamented the loss of life, emphasizing the shameful nature of Nwadinma’s actions, which have left his family and community scandalized. He called on others to refrain from engaging in such dangerous and illegal activities. Expressing gratitude to the communities, Ekong stated, “We are immensely grateful for the support and vigilance of our people. Their actions have proven that they now see this infrastructure as their asset, worth protecting for the benefit of all.” He urged continued vigilance, encouraging residents to alert security agencies and Aba Power of any suspicious activities around electricity facilities. He added that once the natural gas supply to Aba Power’s 188-megawatt General Electric plant resumes, electricity supply will improve, further motivating communities to safeguard these vital assets.
