Politics / Re: Drop Your Prayer Request For The President! by walata44(m): 3:53pm On Nov 28, 2009 |
Some people are just downright ridiculous about PRAYING for an EVIL MAN. . .to do what? To come and destroy the little of the pathetic life you have left?? So, this man is allowed to directly and indirectly kill thousands of people in Gbaramatu, other areas of the Niger Delta, the Boko Haram joker and his followers, and several thousands dying due to no access to effective and good health care (the type he gets in SA and Germany), accidents due to bad roads that have not been fixed, maintained or constructed while money has been allocated and stolen, the hapless youths who out of frustration turn to a life of crime and are summarily executed in the process, the several thousands in the prison system who are awaiting trial for several years and the several of them who are killed and never accounted for! How about the frustrated ones who cannot get a life in Nigeria, cannot or failed to get a visa and embarks on a perilous journey to cross into Europe via North Africa, and the several who are not accounted for?? I am with you. |

Politics / Charles Taylor 'duped' By Nigeria by walata44(m): 2:06pm On Nov 10, 2009 |
By Mark Doyle BBC News Charles Taylor has denied the charges against him Former Liberian President Charles Taylor has said he was duped by Nigeria into being arrested and facing international justice. Mr Taylor was speaking at his trial on war crimes charges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague. He is accused of backing rebels in Liberia's neighbour Sierra Leone, who committed widespread atrocities throughout the 1990s. He had left power and was in exile in Nigeria in 2006 when he was arrested. Mr Taylor now says the president of Nigeria at the time, Olusegun Obasanjo - who is currently a United Nations peace envoy - told him lies that caused him to be arrested. CHARLES TAYLOR CHARGES Violation of humanitarian law: Conscripting child soldiers Crimes against humanity: Terrorising civilians, murder, rape, sexual slavery, enslavement War crimes: "Violence to life", cruel treatment (including hacking off limbs), pillage Preacher, warlord, president Mr Taylor was living in exile in Nigeria in 2006 when US pressure to put him on trial for alleged war crimes increased. Then, Mr Taylor suddenly disappeared while Mr Obasanjo was on his way to Washington to meet his US counterpart, George W Bush. Then, equally suddenly, the Nigerians announced that they had arrested Mr Taylor for trying to escape. The former Liberian leader told the court on Tuesday that Mr Obasanjo had earlier assured him he could leave the country freely. He said Mr Obasanjo had lied to the world when he said that he, Mr Taylor, was trying to escape. Mr Taylor said he hoped he would live to look Mr Obasanjo in the face one day and ask him to tell the truth about what happened. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8352575.stm |
Politics / Why Should A Govt Run A Tv Station? by walata44(m): 2:02pm On Nov 10, 2009 |
All over the world we all know that states run TV are for propaganda purposes. In Nigeria information minister is always the head of NTA and influnce their editorial. In advance democracy like UK (BBC) and the US (NBC ), the TV stations there has editorial independent they may have their political leaning but they can still criticsice their Govt. Lets not forget that to complain or criticise a Govt or a company, is a gift that if you put the criticism into use it will benefit your Govt or company in the long run. |

Politics / Uk Expats Learn Nigeria Culture by walata44(m): 10:49pm On Nov 09, 2009 |
By Ellen Otzen BBC News A tiny restaurant on a north London high street is not where you would expect to go to learn about traditional Nigerian culture. Sandwiched between coffee shops and bowling alleys, the Nigerian Kitchen is easily missed. But on Saturday mornings it is turned into a training school in the customs of one of Nigeria's largest ethnic groups - the Igbo. We were the victims of a 'pro-education' drive Ebere Nwosu School's founder In one corner of the room, a bespectacled teacher, Alex Tetenta, talks lengthily about Igbo political customs. Mr Tetenta is a radio presenter and politics graduate currently writing a book on Nigerian democracy. He is surrounded by a handful of attentive young men, all Igbo, who have grown up in London. Michael's family hails from Abia state in south-eastern Nigeria. He is here, he says "because learning about my own culture gives me a sense of pride, something to hold on to, instead of just the Western stuff". At the other end of the room, the school's founder Ebere Nwosu instructs a group of women in cooking egusi soup. Dried chicken bones sizzle in a pan of palm oil. Red pepper, bitterleaf, and ground crayfish are laid out on a large steel table. Lack of pride Ms Nwosu, dressed in a striking yellow traditional dress, is a legal practitioner. She grew up in north London and says she set up the school to resolve a lack of pride in African culture. "I think a lot of us who have migrated from Africa to the UK or the United States tend to neglect our culture and adopt that of where we are, which is wrong." If you want to marry an Igbo man, you've got to know how to cook egusi soup Ebere Nwosu Does she think the neglect happened as newly arrived immigrants tried to assimilate? "My father is a solicitor and my mother a social worker. Not an ounce of Igbo was spoken to us as we were growing up. They spoke it between themselves, but never spoke it to us children. We were the victims of a 'pro-education' drive," she says. Igbo culture and what sets it apart from the surrounding Nigerian culture is stressed again and again on the course. "Egusi soup is a very common soup amongst Nigerians. There's a way in which the Igbos prepare it in comparison to the Yoruba - we don't put as much oil in our food, and we use more vegetables," Ms Nwosu explains to her students. Each course lasts six weeks and comprises Igbo custom, history, arts and crafts and, of course, cuisine. "If you want to marry an Igbo man, you've got to know how to cook egusi soup. If you can't cook anything else, at least have that under your belt and you're through the door," laughs Ms Nwosu. Roots Igbo culture has given rise to many great names. Most students are of Nigerian origin Olaudah Equiano, one of the most prominent Africans involved in the British movement for the abolition of the slave trade, was believed to be an Igbo. Other famous Igbos include Nigerian writers Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, as well as British athlete Christine Ohuruogu. Kate Njoku has been following the course for six weeks. "I wanted to learn more about my roots and my culture. I grew up in London and I've only been to the village in Nigeria where my family comes from once, when I was very young. It's a full course that teaches the language, the arts and the history - so I thought it would be perfect for me." But not everyone here is Nigerian. Students come from the Caribbean and southern Africa as well. Diana is from Zimbabwe but is going out with an Igbo man. "It's time I learned how to cook Igbo food. That's the food my boyfriend eats. We've been coming to this restaurant for two years, buying take-aways. It's best I cook from home," she says. |

Reps move to establish Nigerian Diaspora commission By Tordue Salem Monday, November 2, 2009 ABUJA—The House of Representatives has slated for second reading a Bill seeking to establish a special Commission for Nigerians living and working abroad. The Bill is sponsored by Chairman, House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Rep. Abike Dabiri-Erewa and 16 other members of the Committee. The Commission when established will mobilize Nigerians living in foreign countries under one productive umbrella. Some of the functions of the Commission will be to provide a data bank of Nigerians abroad and mid-stream their efforts towards nation building. The legislation states in part that “It is a designated Commission in Nigeria charged with the responsibility of coordinating and providing an organised system of collaborations of Nigerians in Diaspora for their contributions by identifying, preserving and mobilizing the human, capital and material resources and expertise to the general development of Nigeria”. The Commission seeks to establish a board that will comprise of a Chairman that possesses “not less than 15 years experience in Public Service”, with a representative each from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigerian Embassies, Consulates and Missions qualified in that regard for not less than ten years, and employed in the Civil Service, not below the rank of a Director”. http://odili.net/news/source/2009/nov/2/303.html Even clueless National assembly can see that Nigerian abroad can add something to the country. |

@ehie people still talk abt infrastructure as the means of development go to India are they perfect ? plus the idea of building industries are all of the old economy, wheter we like it or not no country can compete with China in terms of production so we have to embrace the new economy,ie people like Mark Zuckerberg in their tees and shorts vs black suits. You are seriously deluded, how are you going to achieve that? By shutting down universities, spend less on schools? |

In as much as there is fredom of speech & opinion,i will rather say that abuse of such expression is to be curbed.,govt has absolute power over everything but when such power is threatened, then,it is not power at all.,no matter what, yaradua for now is the president so he's in charge, Some information although can be very good when disseminated to the public, but interpretation of such information differs in all individuals.Example, the rwandan genocide started as a result of incitement of the populace by a radio presenter who was later sent to jail.,i am not saying shutting down ait is ok but if it will keep the country safe.,i guessed it will be a better idea afteral the united state does regulate the media despite being the most democratic country What's your point? Did u watch Focus Nigeria at all? |
