European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Breaking News: Chelsea Appoint Nigerian Micheal Emenalo As Assistant Coach by walata44(m): 11:29pm On Nov 18, 2010
Chelsea appoint Michael Emenalo to replace Ray Wilkins

Chelsea have promoted Michael Emenalo from his position as chief scout to assistant first team coach.
Emenalo, who has been with the Blues since October 2007, succeeds Ray Wilkins in the role and Chelsea say the move is "recognition of his efforts".
The 45-year-old represented Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup and won 14 caps.
Emenalo, who briefly played for Notts County in the mid-1990s, will continue to scout for the first team while he updates his coaching qualifications.
The Nigerian's playing career also took him to the United States, Spain, Germany and Israel.

To replace Wilkins with this guy still feels like the wrong decision! I hope I am wrong!
A biggish club within the M25
Assistant first-team coach Paul Clement, who was alongside boss Carlo Ancelotti in the dug-out at Stamford Bridge for the defeat against Sunderland on Sunday, was expected to step up to fill the role.
Former AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini, had also been linked with the job, as had Mauro Tassotti and Alessandro Costacurta who worked under Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti at Milan.
Ex-Chelsea first-team coach Steve Clarke and former West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola, who was a fans' favourite during his time as a player at Stamford Bridge, were also thought to be in the running.

Nigeria's Golden Eaglets set for just reward

By Oluwashina Okeleji
BBC Sport, Lagos

Ugbade was the captain of Nigeria's under-16 World Cup-winning team
Nigeria's Golden Eaglets will get their reward for winning the maiden under-16 World Cup, after a 25-year wait.

Each player was promised a house, stock in the central bank and a scholarship among other incentives for bringing glory to the continent in 1985.

However, the Nigerian government never fulfilled their pledges.

After waiting in vain, the team captain Nduka Ugbade took their plight to a public hearing at the Nigerian parliament.

Ugbade was in tears as he openly questioned the expectations of the government from athletes when efforts of past heroes are never appreciated or rewarded.

The Director General of the Nigeria Sports Commission, Patrick Ekeji, apologised to the players and promised to pursue their reward.

"I don't have enough details of China 1985 and I want you to supply every detail of promises made to you, we will begin the process of helping you get your benefits," Ekeji said.

"The government appreciates its past heroes [so] I will do all I can to ensure all the players get what they were promised by the government.

"It is really sad because this should have been done a long time ago but hopefully we can right the wrongs by finally fixing it now."

The school boys from Nigeria conquered the world in China in 1985 by beating then West Germany 2-0 in an epic final in Beijing.

The players received a rousing welcome on their return home.

The military leader at the time, Mohammed Buhari promised them national honours, houses, streets named after each member, stock at the central bank, educational scholarships, visits to all the states of the federation and the Mexico 1986 World Cup.

"We did not even get our bonuses from the World Cup while the scholarship was stopped when the government did not pay," Ugbade told BBC Sport.

"Only a company [Thomas Cook] fulfilled the Mexico 1986 trip pledge while one of the players Kingsley Aikhionbore waited in vain until he died.

"Luckily, the honourable members of the house committee on sports heard me out.

"Hopefully, we can finally get it because the man Patrick Ekeji is sincere in his quest to sort it out for us."

Even though Nigeria has since achieved further success at the Fifa under-17 World Cup in 1993 and 2007, the success of the 1985 Golden Eaglets remains a major milestone in the country.

Nigeria police seize football bosses' passports The Super Eagles’ performance in South Africa provoked nationwide anger Fraud police in Nigeria have seized the passports of four top football officials sacked after the country's poor performance at the World Cup.

Nigerian football has been in turmoil since the team left the competition without winning a game.

The president initially banned the team from international competition, but changed his mind after pressure from the football world governing body.

The officials face questions over how more than $8m (£5.2m) was spent.

They have not many any formal statement about the investigation since their sacking but are fully co-operating with the authorities.

Nigeria's strangled football industry
The BBC's Caroline Duffield in Lagos says the Super Eagles' performance in South Africa provoked nationwide anger - and questions over where public money was going.

She says the head of the special financial crimes police, Farida Waziri, is personally handling the investigation - an indication of how politically sensitive it is.

Meanwhile the sacked Football Federation President, Sani Lulu, is refusing to speak to the media, our reporter says.

The Lulu family say his mother was kidnapped earlier this week, and they face a ransom demand of $1.7m.

Politics / How Jonathan Got His Gcfr: Did He Really Deserve It? by walata44(m): 6:54am On Jun 11, 2010
By Rueben Abati

WHOEVER came up with that explanation about how President Goodluck Jonathan got his GCFR – the highest national honour in the land a few days ago must be thoroughly disingenuous. It is as follows. The setting was the last meeting of the Council of State. Someone had proposed that the President should take the GCFR title. He already has the GCON. He reportedly demurred citing an extant law (possibly the National Honours Act No. 5 of 1964) which says only a sitting President can confer the title of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic or Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger on another. A former Chief Justice of the Federation, Alfa Belgore then advised that his was a special case in the sense that he, Jonathan, took over from a dead President. But so did Obasanjo in 1976. In 1983, Buhari deposed a sitting President. And so did Babangida in 1985. Abdulsalami Abubakar also succeeded a dead President. But everyone at the meeting, particularly the state Governors felt persuaded that Jonathan should take the GCFR. They then started begging the man. “Please Your Excellency”; “Please Sir, GCON is too small for you.” They begged. Oh, how they begged! Imagine all those big men begging one man to become a GCFR; and so, Dr. Jonathan, ever-so-humble, capitulated.
How could the President taking a GCFR title have created so much drama at a meeting of the Council of State? Why couldn’t such trifle wait? All of a sudden, President Jonathan who in 30 days had clearly demonstrated that he is in charge and in power was no longer in charge. His award of a GCFR was signed by all former Heads of State, with General Gowon saying: “we signed it”. Under what authority was he and his colleagues acting? They have no such powers. And how many more actions would the President be persuaded to take due to overwhelming pressure, or expediency, but more because of his failure to obey his own moral intuition? The President is the highest authority in the Council of state and so, all that contrived histrionics notwithstanding, the truth is that President Jonathan after only 30 days in office has conferred upon himself the highest honour in the land.
The Council of State is, in a strict sense, an advisory body. It is a creation of the Third Schedule Part 1, Sections 5 and 6 of the 1999 Constitution. Section 6(a)(iii) defines the role of that Council in relation to the “award of national honour,” and nowhere is it stated that former Heads of state can constitute themselves into a superior authority conferring National Honours on a sitting President. Whatever General Gowon and co may have signed is therefore inappropriate, if not illegal. Arthur Schopenhauer is right: “Honour is on its objective side, other people’s opinion of what we are worth; on its subjective side, it is the respect we pay to this opinion.” (Position, 1851).This raises an inevitable moral question: should President Jonatahn award himself the highest honour in the land? The honour that he should seek is not an additional suffixation to his name but such general opinion which by the end of his tenure would advertise his deeds and achievements in office as truly deserving of honour and celebration and a place in the people’s hearts and memory. General Sani Abacha also had a GCFR. Does anyone today think that he truly deserved it? Every Inspector General of Police in recent times has had a National Honour while in office. If anyone is looking for a list of those who have damaged Nigeria in the last 50 years, the place to begin the search is the National Honours List.
This is perhaps why most Nigerians are indifferent about the National Honours system. It does not change anyone’s opinion about the character of the title-holder. It does not attract a salary or a lifetime pension. It probably allows access to the VIP lounge at the country’s airports. But anyone with a couple of thousand Nairas can also use the VIP lounge. And what manner of man or woman is that who rather than pay a token sum for an hour of comfort, waiting to catch a flight, would insist on waving a medal? Still, we should not make light of it. The concept of honour is at the heart of society. Men from time immemorial have craved it. They would kill for it, if possible, go to war, and risk all. Honour is an intangible asset; it is about prestige and self-worth. But that prestige must be seen to have been earned, to have been worked for, such that it inspires the admiration of the community. Like Akintola Williams, CBE; I.K. Dairo, MBE. Each year when the Queen’s Honours’ List is announced in Great Britain, the award is taken seriously; it is an advertisement of the British value system: merit, achievement, international diplomacy. It is not every British Prime Minister that is on the Queen’s Honours list. It is not an entitlement list reserved for anyone and everyone in public position.
Here lies an instructive difference: the Nigerian National Honours list is driven by an entitlement mentality. The day Namadi Sambo became Vice President, he was automatically decorated with a GCON, the second highest honour. As soon as Senator David Mark became Senate President, he also got one of the country’s high honours. Every year, state Governors nominate their friends, family, contractors who donated money to their political campaigns, and traditional rulers who helped to deliver the votes. A few persons of substance show up on the list, but you really have to scratch your head to figure out why certain names have been considered worthy. Because of the emphasis on entitlement and patronage, the award ceremony is ever so bland; the citations say nothing significant.
A review of the National Honours Act and system is overdue. Nigeria must be probably the only country where people are given national honours for work not done, or in anticipation of what they would achieve. National honours should be reserved for those who through hardwork and extraordinary achievement have helped to raise the Nigerian profile and its place in the world. If this be the case, the highest honours in the land should be reserved for the Wole Soyinkas, the Kayode Esos, the Chinua Achebes, the Chukwudifu Oputas, the Dick Tigers, the Fela Kutis, the Margaret Ekpos, inventors, entrepreneurs, great promoters of the Nigerian dream, including the honest average Nigerian, but not politicians and their sponsors, not every civil servant who manages to get to a certain position, not coup plotters, not traditional rulers, not government contractors and certainly not similar rent collectors.
President Jonathan missed a good opportunity to raise the standard on the award of national honours by quickly promoting himself to the GCFR rank. This is reminiscent of the military era and the vaingloriousness of the political elite. When the late President Umaru Yar’Adua was decorated with the same GCFR on the day he assumed office, by the then outgoing President Olusegun Obasanjo, he had remarked that he would have preferred getting such high honour after his tour of duty as President. It was a useful point. Once more, President Jonathan has failed to eschew the business-as-usual syndrome. I should not be surprised if in due course, the Council of Traditional Rulers unleash all kinds of chieftaincy title offers on him, including that notorious, eponymous one in Yorubaland: OTUNBA. He would of course, demur. But the Council of chiefs from this or that community will beg him. And beg him. And of course, he will accept. The moment may also soon arrive when some Nigerians will beg the President to run for office in 2011. And they will beg and beg. And of course, he will accept. That after all, is the story of how Jonathan got his GCFR.

Politics / Africa's First High-speed Train Has Started Running. Any lessons learnt by NIG? by walata44(m): 12:53pm On Jun 08, 2010
Africa's first high-speed train has started running - just in time for fans travelling to South Africa for the World Cup, which starts on Friday.

Costing a massive 24bn rand ($3bn; £2.1bn), South Africa hopes that its revolutionary rapid transit system will bring some much needed change to its outdated and sometimes unreliable transport system.

Its top speed is 160 km/h (100 mph) - a long way from the world's fastest trains but still far superior to the locomotives chugging along most of the rest of the continent's tracks, which mostly date from the colonial era.

Although the Gautrain was not intended to be a World Cup project, the local authorities and constructors Mbombela were anxious to get the main route ready in time for the football extravaganza.

Large crowds turned up to ride on the train's inaugural trip. Narcizo Makwakwa took the train from Sandton to the airport "just for a joy ride".

"After this, I am going to work but I had to see it. I couldn't wait for the past seven years for this, it is beautiful," he told the BBC.

Gaillard Rossouw said the train was the only way he could make it from Johannesburg to the airport for his early morning flight back home to Durban.

"It took me 15 minutes to get here, this is awesome."

A rocky road

Just one section of of the line has been finished - between the OR Tambo international airport and central Johannesburg.

The next section of the line will link Johannesburg to the national capital, Pretoria, 50km (31 miles) away in 40 minutes.

The authorities were keen for it to be ready for the World Cup Currently, driving between the two cites in Gauteng province can take up to two hours in peak-hour traffic.

Construction on the Gautrain began in September 2006 and will be finalised in June 2011 when an additional 10 stations, covering approximately 80km (50 miles) are completed.

Close to 100,000 direct and indirect jobs have been created by the construction of the Gautrain, with more than 25% of those going to locals.

Still this high speed system has seen its fair share of controversy.

Critics have argued that it would only benefit the elite.

They said the billions spent on the ambitious project should be used to improve the existing transport system, which includes the old Metrorail network, responsible for transporting two million people daily, instead of beginning a new one.

The Metrorail trains are mainly used as a link between townships including Soweto and Johannesburg.

THE GAUTRAIN
New line runs from Johannesburg to Pretoria with an extension to OR Tambo International Airport Construction began in 2006, due to complete in 2011 Cost: 24 bn rand [$3bn/£2.12bn] Speed: 160 kmh [100 mph] Length: 80km when complete Trains based on 'Electrostar' design and built by Bombardier in Derby, UK

In contrast to the luxurious Gautrain with its air-conditioned coaches, people are often crammed into the Metrorail's carriages, where muggings have become a common problem.

The trains also sometimes prove to be unreliable - either arriving late or not being available due to strike action, as happened recently, stranding hundreds of thousands.

Deputy Transport Minister Jeremy Cronin once expressed concerns that the Gautrain might become a scapegoat for disgruntled Metrorail commuters.

But opposition parties were more concerned that like many of the country's roads, the Gautrain would ultimately be neglected.

"The government is unable to properly maintain and rehabilitate the existing 23,000 km of tarred roads," Democratic Alliance transport spokesman Stuart Farrow said in 2005.

"How is the public then expected to believe that 20bn rand spent on the Gautrain is in their best interest?"

Smart card

Initial estimates for the project were 7bn rand, before rocketing to more than 20bn.

The operational route includes four stations and bus services between the affluent Sandton suburb and the airport.

For too long the people of Gauteng were hoping and dreaming about the day when our public transport systems are on par with the rest of the world
Jeff Radebe

Justice minister
It will offer a cheaper alternative for airport transfers from Sandton and Johannesburg which on average cost 300 rand ($40; £27.32) but will now cost just $13.

Although offering the benefits of speed and additional safely, it will prove to be more expensive for people looking to commute between suburbs in Johannesburg and in Pretoria, whose costs are currently minimal.

At the moment minibus taxis and Metrorail are the preferred means of travel for many but over the years concerns have been raised about the minibus industry which remains difficult to regulate.

Traffic between Johannesburg and Pretoria is currently growing by 7% each year. If the Gautrain is as efficient as South Africans have been made to believe, it will certainly be useful to those looking to save time while commuting between the commercial districts.

It will operate between 05:30 and 20:30 weekdays, running every 12 minutes during peak times.

This public transport service will include dedicated, exclusive bus services to transport passengers to and from stations.

Commuters will access all services by means of a contactless smart card - the Gautrain Gold Card, which can be topped up with money.

The Gauteng provincial government says this will "revolutionise" how people use the transport system and argues that it will aid economic growth.

New Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said the project was "long overdue". He was transport minister when the project was announced in the Gauteng provincial legislature in 2002.

"For too long the people of Gauteng were hoping and dreaming about the day when our public transport systems are on par with the rest of the world," he said on Saturday.

South Africa's hard-pressed commuters - as well as the world's football fans - will be hoping the comfort and speed will prove to be worth the wait.

Cash-strapped NFF await government grant

Cash flow problems have hit the Nigeria Football Federation as the N900 million approved by the Nigerian government for them to prosecute the World Cup is yet to be released.

As of Thursday, one day after they arrived in South Africa, the NFF had yet to pay for their accommodations at the Protea Hotel Waterfront lodgings in Durban.

In addition, they have been asked to expect an invoice of around $700 000 from Arik Air as cost of airlifting the Super Eagles from London to South Africa.

Officials are also hoping that the money comes in on time for them to settle bonus payments to the players and Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback, all of whom are on graduated payments for the World Cup.

Lagerback is due to get $150 000 if the Super Eagles reach the Round of 16. That amount will climb to $200 000 if they reach the quarterfinal, $300 000 for the semi-final or third place finish.

If the team reach the Final, the Swede gets $400 000 and winning the Cup nets him $500 000.

Apart from the graduated bonuses promised to the players, they are also due to share in 25% of the pot from FIFA to the NFF, and the NFF is keen to sort that out before the World Cup kicks off.

Politics / Yar’adua: Jonathan On Surprise ‘thank You’ Visit To Saudi Arabia by walata44(m): 10:19am On Jun 02, 2010
President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday made a detour to Saudi Arabia to express the gratitude of the government and people of Nigeria to King Abdullah over the treatment and courtesies to late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua while he was in the Saudi kingdom for over three months for medical care.

Late President Yar’Adua was on November 13 last year flown to King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre for heart ailment that later led to complications and his death. He, however, returned to the country in March following his discharge by his doctors.

It is not known if the “thank you” visit by President Jonathan to Saudi Arabia was scheduled, but THISDAY gathered that the President and some members of his entourage including Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Odein Ajumogobia (SAN) left France yesterday morning at the conclusion of the 25th Africa-France Summit in Nice for Riyadh.

Details of the visit were not available as at press time yesterday, but this paper learnt that the visit was prompted by the desire of the President to lead a Federal Government delegation to the oil rich kingdom to thank them for having deployed everything within their powers to tend to late Yar’Adua for the period he was in there.

“You know in traditional African societies such as ours and I believe the same applies elsewhere, it is only fleeting that our government convey our sincere appreciation to King Abdullah and the government and peoples of the kingdom over the care and courtesies to our late President,” a source told THISDAY yesterday.

The President, who has since returned to the country last night, is expected to preside over the weekly Executive Council of the Federation (EXCOF).

Nigeria coach Lars Lagerback has left Real Zaragoza's Ikechukwu Uche and Everton's Victor Anichebe out of his squad for the World Cup.

Uche was the top scorer for the Super Eagles in qualifying and had recently recovered from a knee injury.

Anichebe's Everton colleague Joseph Yobo is included, along with Nwankwo Kanu and Chelsea's John Mikel Obi.

Obi is recuperating from knee surgery and only joined the rest of the squad on Friday.

Another surprise exclusion in the Nice defender Onyekachi Apam who was also struggling with a knee problem.

The two home-based players - goalkeeper Akpan Bassey and defender Terna Suswan - also failed to make the cut.

Peter Utaka and Brown Ideye are the final two to miss out, though Utaka's brother John makes the squad as do Everton's Yakubu, Fulham's Dickson Etuhu and Bolton's Danny Shittu.

Nigeria are drawn in Group B along with Argentina, Greece and South Korea.

The Super Eagles' opening match against Argentina on 12 June is one of the most anticipated of the tournament.
