One of the two Nigerians claimed that they were only showing solidarity with Ghanaians who they consider brothers and sisters. He said they also found it imperative to join because the two countries have similar problems. Two Nigerian citizens have been arrested by the Accra police for joining a protest against the government on Thursday. According to the police, foreigners have no right to join in a protest of that nature. The demonstrators were protesting corruption and a high cost of living. "It was not for other nationals to join," Joseph Obenefo Darkwa of the police CID told the press, but one of the two Nigerians also responded that they were only showing solidarity with Ghanaians, who they consider brothers and sisters. He said they also found it imperative to join because the two countries have similar problems. "We are comrades from Nigeria. We are protesting fuel prices hikes. We have undergone similar things in Nigeria around January. We believe in a united Africa. Nigerians and Ghanians, we are brothers. Whatever affects Ghanians affects Nigerians. So we are here in solidarity with Ghana." The police however did not take this for an explanation, calling their behavior “offensive” and an affront to national sovereignty, holding the two in custody. The two held the Nigerian flag side-by-side with the Ghanaian one, singing their own songs. Earlier, a security expert at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Centre, Dr. Kwasi Aning, had predicted the possibility of the demonstration being infiltrated by troublemakers, but it is not yet clear if the two represent any such constituency. Police say they have begun profiling the two gentlemen and are investigating the matter further. http://metropolexpress.com/index.php/news-cat/item/3906-two-nigerians-arrested-in-ghana-for-joining-protest-march

Rita Marley, wife of late Reggae superstar Bob Marley has been granted a dual citizenship by government in connection with the Pan-African Festival (PANAFEST) Foundation. Her dual nationality as a Ghanaian and Jamaican is the first of its kind to be granted to a diasporan after several years of struggle. Rita Marley has since been handed a Ghanaian passport and dual citizenship documents to guarantee her legal stay in the country. The Chairman of PANAFEST foundation, Mr Kohain Nathanyeh Halevi Rabbi, who disclosed this to The Independent, expressed happiness and called on government to grant more dual citizenship to diasporans who were ready to create more jobs in the country. According to him, his outfit has fought years to secure dual citizenship documents for diasporans yet, all effort proved futile. "Many diasporans have struggled to secure dual citizenship but they have not been successful. I believe granting one to our mother Rita Marley is in the right direction but we need more for our people", he said. “Since Ghana is a peaceful country with respect for its values and traditions have attracted more investors to established businesses here, therefore granting them nationality would support the nation’s development" he added. Speaking on this year's PANAFEST celebrations, Mr Rabbi noted that this was the worst year since their patronage had gone down. He stated that the foundation received fewer resources to undertake its numerous activities. The PANAFEST Chairman therefore called on government, stakeholders and benevolent organisations to come to their aid to revamp the festival to its old taste.

Asamoah Gyan has become the highest ever paid Ghanaian footballer following his latest bumper deal with his UAE-side Al Ain that will earn him at least $13m per year. Other bonuses depending on the team’s results will rocket his annual earnings to about $15m which makes him by far the highest earning player from Ghana. The charismatic striker stands well above Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Andre Ayew who are the other top earning footballers from the country. Following the new deal he signed on Thursday, Gyan will earn $250,000 weekly before winning bonuses as well as appearance fee in various competitions which will further boost his earnings. He could earn up to about $60m by the time his contract comes to an end with the UAE side before the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Muntari, Essien and Boateng earn around $10m annually while Ayew, who is Marseille’s highest paid player, earns about $8m but the huge taxes (about 40%) the quartet pay in Europe dwarfs their wages. Ghana’s other top players in the past like Abedi Pele, Sammy Kuffuor and Anthony Yeboah did not earn what the current generation are raking in. Gyan enjoys tax-free earnings in the UAE which means he will keep all the money he earns without paying anything in taxes. He extended his contract with Al Ain until 2018 and the deal suggests he is not interested in moving to Europe The Ghanaian striker, the UAE top flight’s leading goalscorer for the past three years, has committed his future to the Garden City club following a relatively successful Brazil World Cup. Since joining in 2011, originally on loan, Gyan has scored 82 goals in 66 league matches. Gyan, who led Ghana at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, previously played for Sunderland in the English Premier League. http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/SportsArchive/artikel.php?ID=318467
