Kantanka Automobile Company Limited, producers of Kantanka vehicles has announced producing in commercial quantities for the Ghanaian market in fourth quarter of 2014 after the successful installation of its assembling plants at Gomoa Mpota in the Central Region.

The facility expected to be commissioned during the said time will have about one hundred and fifty vehicles made up of pick-ups and sports utility vehicles (SUVs) unveiled to the general public.

“After years of hard work researching to make this dream come true, we can confidently announce to you today that we are ready to produce in commercial quantities,” CEO of Kantanka Automobile Company Limited, Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo declared.

According to him, test runs of the facility have also been successfully completely, paving the way for the grand launch of the facility to the general public.

The plant, comparable to any automobile assembling facility in the world, assembles imported vehicle parts from China and other parts of the world, including locally manufactured ones.

It has the capacity to produce eight vehicles a day and could further be expanded to produce twelve or more depending on market demand.

The government is expected to buy majority of the vehicles produced by the company as the demand to resource state institutions keeps growing.

The purchase would further indicate the government’s commitment to promoting locally manufactured products. Phase two of the project which entails the rolling out of saloon cars is projected to take place by end of 2015, according to the Operations Manager, Kojo Kudzordzi, who conducted journalists round the facility.

Apostle Dr. Safo, commenting further said the facility represents the intelligence of the Blackman.

“So many people think that the Blackman is not intelligent to manufacture things but that is not true. We can also make it if only we persevere,” he noted.

He appealed to the general public to support him as he seeks to make the country the hub of automobile in the West African sub region.

“Help me to manufacture and our country will be a better place to live,” he added.

President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Rev. Ing. Eric Ankrah, commenting on the plant said the institution was in support of the facility and would help transform it by accrediting it as a Center of Excellence for Competence Based Approach to assist in training the youth for the job market.

“This is the policy of the government,” he noted.

Foreign AffairsMore Ghanaians Renounce Their Nationality - Interior Ministry by Wale112(op): 11:24am On Jul 15, 2014
Many Ghanaians are now renouncing their nationality to become citizens of other countries due to economic reasons, Mr Kwesi Ahwoi, Minister of the Interior, announced on Monday.

He said in all, a total number of 817 applications were received and approved from Ghanaians in 2013 to enable them to change their nationalities.

Out of the number, 367 were males and 450 were female Ghanaians, who took nationality in Germany (538), Netherlands (233), Norway (32), Denmark (7), Austria (5), Hong Kong (1) and China (1), Mr Ahwoi said this at the-meet-the-press series in Accra.

Elaborating further on the issue, Mr David Agorsor, Director in Charge of Migration Unit of the Ministry said majority of the applicants were health professionals, especially doctors and nurses, who had their passports taken from them and returned to the Passport office on completion of the process.

He explained that, such people renounced their Ghanaian nationality because they are mostly offered job opportunities in those countries which do not recognize dual citizenship.

Mr Agorsor, who described the situation as very alarming, however said such people could regain their Ghanaian citizenship if they renounce the foreign one later.

“The rate at which Ghanaians are naturalizing as Germans is alarming. Almost every week, people come over to naturalise as Germans unlike in previous times-when they go seeking for greener pastures”.

Meanwhile, Mr Ahwoi said 39 foreigners applied to naturalize as Ghanaians, and that 29 of them had been approved and the remaining 10 being outstanding.

Of these, 17 people were Lebanese, five Indians, one each from Nigeria, Korea, Egypt, America, Britain and Liberia.

The Interior Minister gave an overview about work being done within the 10 agencies of the Sector Ministry, made up of the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The rest are the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), Ghana Refugee Board, Gaming Commission, National Commission on Small Arms and the National Peace Council.

Mr Ahwoi said all the agencies would collaborate and work to provide a safe and secure environment where social economic activities would thrive within the confines of the law to enable Ghana to enhance her status as a middle income country to achieve higher growth and development.

He said many of the laws governing the agencies were obsolete and that, they are being amended at various stages to bring them up to date.

He said a new migration policy, a private security organisations regulations, a locksmiths activities regulations as well as a service charter had been designed while the NADMO Bill had been approved by Cabinet.

A cabinet memorandum on a loan facility to procure logistics for security agencies is also being worked on, and that, when that is approved, the agencies would be provided with the needed logistics for effective operations.

PoliticsGhana Generates 1000 Megawatts Of Electricity From Ada Estuary by Wale112(op): 11:06am On Jul 15, 2014
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG,) has engaged a Swedish company to produce 1000 megawatts of power using the environmentally friendly tidal wave technology.

To this end, the Swedish company would utilise the exceptionally strong tides at the Ada Estuary by placing a hydro power plant under the sea at to convert the energy of the tide into energy, the ECG announced over the weekend.

Mr George Marfo, Manager of ECG Training School who announced this during a workshop for journalists on the operations of the company, said the move was part of the ECG’s commitment to engage power producers to generate adequate amount of electricity for distribution to customers.

He disclosed that the Swedish company which signed an agreement with the ECG last week would by December generate five megawatts of power and would periodically upgrade its generation capacity by 200 megawatts until it reaches the intended 1000 megawatts by 2016.

Mr Marfo said owing to the growing demand for power; the initiative would ensure adequate power for businesses and domestic use.

He said the technology to be employed by the company has been deployed successfully in Peru where the tides are not as strong as that of the Ada Estuary.

He said studies in the area indicate that it is a suitable location to site the underwater hydro plant.

Mr Marfo also said the ECG had engaged two other independent power producers who had use the technology to generate power on ships to produce 450 megawatts of electricity for the company.

He said that most of the current power imbalances in the national grid was as a result of generation difficulties.

Tidal energy is produced through the use of tidal energy generators. These large underwater turbines are placed in areas with high tidal movements, and are designed to capture the kinetic motion of the ebbing and surging of ocean tides in order to produce electricity.

Tidal power has great potential for future power and electricity generation because of the massive size of the oceans.

Three Nigerians, one of them a woman, have been arrested for allegedly possessing forged Ghanaian passports.

Though the passports bear Ghanaian names; Emmanuel Kwafo, Richard Bioh and Cindy Ayim, officials of the Document Fraud Expertise Centre of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), found out that the names were not the actual identities of the suspects.

Investigations conducted by the GIS showed that the real identities of the male suspects were Emmanuel Ihueze, 28, and John Nkwocha, both welders, while that of the woman was Zeinab Kofoworola Kasali, 24, a student.

Bio-data page

The Head of the Document Fraud Expertise Centre, Mr Frederick Baah Duodu, told the Daily Graphic that the two men were arrested at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) while attempting to travel to Kuwait with forged Ghanaian biometric passports.

He said the men, who were intercepted about 8:30 p.m. on July 3, 2014, claimed they had arrived in Ghana a month ago and lodged at a hotel after paying two agents to acquire passports for them.

The two suspects claimed to have paid $5,000 each to two agents, one of whom they identified only as Uche.

Mr Duodu said an examination of the passports revealed that the bio-data page was a counterfeit, even though the passport booklet was a genuine Ghanaian passport with all the security features.

The passports, with numbers G0485026 and GO724578, indicated that they were issued on June 2, 2014 and would expire on June 1, 2019.

Woman arrested at JFK

According to Mr Duodu, Zeinab was intercepted by immigration officers at the John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport in New York on July 1, 2014 with a passport indicating she had travelled on an airline from the KIA, Accra.

He said the immigration officials at the JFK Airport were suspicious of the American visa in the passport and, therefore, questioned the holder.

She was subsequently deported to Ghana on July 5, 2014.

On her arrival, Kasali’s case was referred to the Document Fraud Centre, where the immigration officers, after careful examination, found that the passport was not genuine.

It was also discovered that she was a Nigerian who had attempted to use a Ghanaian passport to travel.

Warning

During interrogation, Zeinab was said to have told the immigration officers that an uncle whose name she gave as Obuma Okafor had acquired the passport with a visa for her to enable her to travel to the United States.

The uncle is currently on the run.

During a search on the system at the KIA, the immigration officers retrieved a scanned Nigerian passport with number AO1930718 with the picture of Zeinab.

According to Zeinab, she had paid $5,000 for the passport and $2,000 for the ticket.

Mr Duodu said the suspects would be handed over to the Anti-Human Smuggling and Trafficking Unit of the GIS for further investigations.

He warned foreigners, especially Nigerians, to desist from using Ghanaian passports and other travel documents, saying the GIS “was always ready to clamp down on illegal acquisition of Ghanaian passports by fraudsters”.

As part of efforts to win the fight, he said, the GIS was building the capacity of its personnel at the entry points, including the ports and the borders, to be abreast of new trends in forged documents being used by fraudsters.
