Work is going on well. We have a new cleaning lady and she’s hot as hell! Makes me wonder how such a young girl in her early 20s is cleaning offices and not in school or working in a white collar environment. But who knows, she might be a product of the economic downturn.
Music/RadioRe: Fake American Accents On Nigerian Radio & Tv! by Wallie(m): 3:33pm On Sep 14, 2011
The problem is that they’re trying too hard! Also, how can they be speaking with an American accent when Americans don’t even understand what they’re saying? Like someone said earlier, they should concentrate on grammar. If they want to speak with an accent, they should let it come naturally without trying too hard while maintaining clarity.

This is the same reason that I can’t stand most Nigerian musicians that only sing in English. They sound like they’re singing through their nose! Asa is about the only straight-English (no pidgin) singer that I can stand; although, I’ve not heard Banky W.
FamilyRe: Marriage: Is It Worth It? by Wallie(m): 8:28pm On Sep 09, 2011
Lol @ Dayo

I used to watch all that crap on TV while having to pretend I love it; although, you might occasionally have to catch yourself from falling too deep into their stupid plotsgrin Nowadays, I’m only staying in a room if I like what’s on TV except they start fighting!

Is marriage worth it? It depends on who you marry.

If you marry someone that contributes positively to your life, then it is worth it. I usually laugh when I hear girls say that they’re looking for a man to take care of them. I’m like, “what are you bringing to the table”? What kind of girl do you think a successful guy looks for? You think a successful man would want to log around dead weight that will be treated like gold? If you’re dead weight, chances are high that a successful individual will treat you as such!

If all I get with your pretty face and body is bad attitude, shopping spree with my money, disrespect, empty stomach, high mileage and infidelity then whatever is between us is only good for a few months!

But if the woman is very understanding, trustworthy, carries her weight and breaks you off properly? She’s worth a marriage and more! This is the type of women that you spend your last penny on as all she would bring to your life is happiness, encouragement and contentment.

Further, the OP is right by observing that marriage takes hard work but if you have a partner that’s working with you instead of against you, you’ve won half your battles! With regards to the other half, you have to put in work in the form of compromise (you can’t always have your way), perseverance, understanding (we’re all different), patience (testosterone and estrogen induce different reactions), tolerance (women get moody for no reason at times) :-)

In summary, choose your spouse wisely or your life could become miserable especially in the US!

I don’t really have more to add to what both sides of the aisle are saying except we should accept that every human is fallible and not follow our leaders blindly! It does not matter if the leader in question is your president, governor, imam, pastor, or teacher. Follow follow without using your brain will only keep you subjugated and being used for another man’s selfish interests.

GEJ is the current president of Nigeria and will be for the next 3+ years. For everyone’s sake, including those who did not vote for him, I pray that he’s only just getting warmed up because his failure is not an option. Also keep in mind that he may be one of those who “speak softly and carry a big stick”, as Theodore Roosevelt would say. I’m just waiting to see him use that “big stick”, especially on corruption, boko haram, and ineffective ministers.

If you’re coming into the US, do not bring anything that is wet or containing chicken or beef. Usually, wet food stuff can contain organisms not native to the US or even ones that they are trying to eradicate. Chicken is prohibited because of Bird Flu and beef because of Mad Cow disease. Even maggi is prohibited.
BusinessRe: "nigeria Sat X Performing Very Well" by Wallie(m): 4:43pm On Aug 29, 2011
Nigerians could have worked in “building” the satellite. There are millions of lines of codes that have to be written for the different modules that make up the satellite. I have zero doubt that the satellite was “designed” by the British and it is probably similar to other satellites that they have built in the past. Most of the knowledge required to build such a satellite are acquired on the job. All you need is an engineer that you can give specific instructions (specification) to for implementation.

The picture referenced earlier showed a wafer processing facility that is usually manned by trained technicians (not engineers). The engineers do most of the design work and the technicians implement the design.

What the Nigerians did could have been as simple as screwing different modules together and collecting test data but it could also be complex as analyzing data and designing specific modules. Either way, you can easily train the “right” person to build the satellite.

People even build satellite as a hobby! http://www.hobbyspace.com/SatBuilding/

I be woman ooh not a man cheesy, and yes I hear you about the embezzlement issues that have torn this nation apart. I don't have a problem with Nigerians who want to remain abroad my own is that, If you are going to criticize and condemn, when you are done criticizing please offer or provide a solution.

The solution doesn't need to be on a grand scale, it can be in a simple and personal way such as drilling a bore hole for your community people in Naija, sending good quality medicines back home for common ailments like cold, cough, fever etc

Just do what you can, wherever you are as your quota and leave the bigger issues that are out of your power. Someone said something about self preservation and selflessness. Selflessness for me is a matter of choice ooh! I can choose to be kind and compassionate with the little I have now or wait until I am rich or have big bucks in my account.

Come to think of it has anyone noticed how rich people in this part of the world tend to be stingy? My point is: don't wait till you get that great job, have more money etc etc, before you perform an act of kindness or selflessness towards your country or at least the citizens of your home state be it in Kaduna, Abia, Kogi etc.
I said selflessness in regards to coming back to Nigeria and setting up shop. I completely agree that one does not have to wait until one becomes wealthy before lending a helping hand. Even though I’m not in Nigeria, I do have a charity that I contribute to, United for Kids Foundation, that helps kids in need. The people running the charity are here in the US but also in Nigeria and UK.

Erractic power supply, lack of quality healthcare services, poor infrastructures like bad roads etc etc, are amongst the many complaints I have heard and keep on hearing from my superiors based abroad and some other Nigerians I know in Yankee as their reasons for staying/remaining abroad.

The matter dey tire me sef, with the way they carry on condemning practically everything. Suddenly nothing is good or praise worthy in their own country and homeland. I often hear, in America this or that wouldn't happen. In the US they would do it like this, In the United States blah blah blah and the list just goes on.

Everything has become a comparison between us (Nigeria) and the developed world/countries. What I find really exasperating is the constant strings of complaints from this people (my bosses etc), who do nothing and offer no solutions to the problem other than talk and criticize.

They left this country (Naija) for greener pastures and expect to come back to a well developed and fully functional nation. Who were they or are they expecting to rebuild the nation and make it comfortable enough for them to return to? Is it the Govt or those who returned after school or is it the ones that have never left at all.That would be a classic case of monkey dey work baboon dey chop.

In a nutshell I wish Nigerians abroad who are particularly fond of criticizing and condemning this nation would equally proffer solutions in the wake of their criticism or just do what they can in their immediate environment or communities in Naija like sinking a bole hole in their village or even sponsoring a child or two to secondary school level.
Contribute your quota as you honestly can in whatever capacity.
You’ve made very valid points and that is why I have a philosophy of not complaining if I can’t offer a solution but you also have to realize that every human is hard-wired with survival instincts to self-persevere.  Being selfless is not something that comes naturally; so if given a choice, most people will choose a life of relative ease and comfort.

Well, the move has to be gradual…one cannot just abandon everything that one knows for a complete unknown. For people with choice, a source of stable income needs to be created that has the potential of sustaining one for decades to come. Ultimately, I will return to Nigeria but not at the expense of abandoning a place I’ve spent about 2/3 of my life. My goal is to have businesses in the US and Nigeria that feed off each other so that I can spend equal amounts of time in both places.

There are also quite a number of things that I do for recreation that cannot be easily replicated in Nigeria in the near future. Money is nice but quality of life is “nicer.”

A New Orleans lawyer sought an FHA loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted if he could prove satisfactory title to a parcel of property being offered as collateral. The title to the property dated back to 1803, which took the Lawyer three months to track down. After sending the information to the FHA, he received the
following reply (Actual letter):

"Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented the application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear the title back to
its origin."

Annoyed, the lawyer responded as follows (actual letter):

"Your letter regarding title in Case No. 189156 has been received. I note that you wish to have title extended further than the 194 years covered by the present application. I was unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly those working in the
property area, would not know that Louisiana was purchased, by the U.S., from France in 1803, the year of origin identified in our application.

For the edification of uninformed FHA bureaucrats, the title to the land prior to U.S. ownership was obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain. The land came into the possession of Spain by Right of Discovery made in the year 1492 by a sea captain named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to India by the Spanish monarch, Isabella.

The good queen, Isabella, being a pious woman and almost as careful about titles as the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope before she sold her jewels to finance Columbus' expedition. Now the Pope, as I'm sure you may know, is the emissary of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and God, it is commonly accepted, created this world.

Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume that God also made that part of the world called Louisiana. God, therefore, would be the owner of origin and His origins date back, to before the beginning of time, the world as we know it AND the FHA. I hope you find God's original claim to be satisfactory.

Now, may we have our loan?"

The loan was approved.

It is the prosecutor’s job to prove that the person is guilty of murder. If he his guilty, was it premeditated (1st degree murder), accidental, or in self defense? Is there another plausible reason the guy is holding the knife? Could he have walked into a room seeing the deceased stabbed and he tried to help by removing the knife?
CareerRe: Do All Lawyers Actually Lie? by Wallie(m): 2:05pm On Aug 25, 2011
The short answer is no because lying can get you disbarred as you have a duty of candor to the court. We have Rules of Professional Responsibilities that we must follow, at least in the US.

However, just because you can’t lie does not mean that you should make the case for the other side. It is totally up to the opposing attorney to make his case. You only disclose what you’re under obligation to disclose. If you ask me a vague question be prepared for a vague response. Playing with words is not considered lying and it is up to the opposing attorney to recognize that his question wasn't direct enough.

Further, there are rules preventing certain disclosures of client communication.

Here’s one lawyer’s redacted take:

Client confidentiality v. duty of candor to the court
Recently I was arguing a magistrate court appeal, in the circuit court, when the judge asked me what my communications had been to my client concerning the client's trial date. I refused to answer the question, explaining to the court that I was placed in a difficult position, as I could not reveal the subject of client communications. The judge's response was that I have a duty of candor to the court that required my response - I have to disagree, as I will explain below.

Back to the question regarding communications with the client regarding court dates, there are many considerations, including the rules governing client confidentiality, the Sixth Amendment right to counsel which includes the duty of confidentiality (without which the right to counsel would be meaningless), the client's Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination which necessarily includes the client's right against self-incrimination through the lawyer, and the broader policy considerations that require public trust in the sanctity of the attorney-client privilege.

Any rule which required an attorney to reveal such communications to the court would result in persons accused of crimes, and specifically this client, believing that they cannot trust their lawyer, and it would be that much worse because it would be a distrust caused by the judicial branch of the government. The Rules of confidentiality and the attorney-client privilege are both based on the same policy considerations: "Attorneys can best serve their clients and represent client interests only with full and frank disclosure between the client and attorney; and freedom from fear of disclosure by the attorney fosters full disclosure by the client."

Rule 1.6 of the S.C. Rules of Professional Conduct governs confidentiality, and states:
(b) A lawyer may reveal information relating to the representation of a client to the extent the lawyer reasonably believes necessary:
(1) to prevent the client from committing a criminal act
;
(2) to prevent reasonably certain death or substantial bodily harm;
(3) to prevent the client from committing a crime or fraud that is reasonably certain to result in substantial injury to the financial interests or property of another and in furtherance of which the client has used or is using the lawyer’s services;
(4) to prevent, mitigate or rectify substantial injury to the financial interests or property of another that is reasonably certain to result or has resulted from the client’s commission of a crime or fraud in furtherance of which the client has used the lawyer’s services;
(5) to secure legal advice about the lawyer's compliance with these Rules;

(6) to establish a claim or defense on behalf of the lawyer in a controversy between the lawyer and the client, to establish a defense to a criminal charge or civil claim against the lawyer based upon conduct in which the client was involved, or to respond to allegations in any proceeding concerning the lawyer's representation of the client; or
(7) to comply with other law or a court order.

(1) through (4) deal with what is called the "crime/fraud exception" to the rules of confidentiality; if a client intends to engage in a future crime, the lawyer may reveal confidences to prevent the crime (notice this is not mandatory, it is permissive). This never applies to past conduct, which would go to the very nature of a criminal defense lawyer's advice to clients.

(5) applies when an attorney is seeking advice regarding the rules from another attorney, in which case the privilege is simply extended to the second attorney. (6) involves situations where a lawyer is sued by his client, and it allows an attorney to discuss confidences to the extent necessary to defend his conduct in a PCR case.

(7) would apply, except for the Constitutional considerations. I believe that (7) would insulate an attorney from discipline as a result of answering these questions when ordered by the court, but would not require the attorney to disclose his client's confidences, as the Rule uses the language "may" as opposed to "must."

I might not be able to argue the extent to which foreign-trained graduates are considered better than our Nigerian counterparts, but I might be able to point out certain indisputable facts between the two.
When i came to the US for undergrad, one of my biggest issues was to catch up. I not only found out that the kids in my programming class have been exposed to that since high school, i was made to understand that "this is not a refresher class from high school curriculum".
I have a cousin that graduated from UNILAG for his first degree in Electrical Engineering. He then traveled to University of Texas (A&M) for his masters in Chemical Engineering in the late 90s to early 2000s. He told me that his first class assignment literally took him a whole night because he didn’t know that you can use formulas in excel spreadsheet and he did the whole calculation by hand.

I also had to play catch up during my undergrad degree because I couldn’t see the connection between the names of certain principles and the meaning of the names. For example, I bet many electrical engineers didn’t see the correlation between the following names and their respective functions:

Resistor
Capacitor
Transistor
Impedance etc.
EducationRe: Nigeria Graduate Vs Foreign Graduate by Wallie(m): 6:12pm On Aug 18, 2011
People keep talking about foreign trained graduates not being able to deliver in Nigeria. But have you really considered that unless you’re in a position of power to effect change, there’s very little that you can do?

By way of example, imagine that a foreign graduate is one of the four wheels in a car and the other three wheels are deflated. It does not matter how over-inflated the foreign graduate wheel is, once the car gets moving, it will quickly come to an abrupt halt. In other words, a single person can only do so much when the entire system is dysfunctional. On the other hand, there are some foreign graduates that are dumb as a door knob.

For what it’s worth, which is not much since I don’t know that many Nigerian schooled graduates, I have only met one 100% Nigerian schooled graduate that impressed the hell out of me and he’s also on NL.
EducationRe: Nigeria Graduate Vs Foreign Graduate by Wallie(m): 3:02am On Aug 18, 2011
I agree with what tanimola22 said. In addition to that, if it wasn’t true that the average foreign trained graduate is “better”, then Africans won’t be complaining about brain drain. Mind you, I not necessarily saying that studying abroad makes you better, I’m only suggesting that it is more likely that the brightest minds Africa has to offer already seeked greener pastures abroad because they easily passed all the entrance exams (SAT, GMAT, GRE, TOFL etc) needed.

In other words, there’s an argument to be made that the “most fit” Africans are “surviving” by traveling abroad.

With regards to Nigerian’s slumming it abroad, that’s only true if every single Nigerian in Nigeria is suffering. In other words, hasty generalizations are illogical.
HealthWill Human Creation In The Lab Be Next? by Wallie(op): 1:48pm On Aug 16, 2011
Above: The synthetic scaffold of an ear sits bathed in cartilage-producing cells, part of an effort to grow new ears for wounded soldiers.

More than 100,000 people are waiting for organ transplants in the U.S. alone; every day 18 of them die. Not only are healthy organs in short supply, but donor and patient also have to be closely matched, or the patient's immune system may reject the transplant. A new kind of solution is incubating in medical labs: "bioartificial" organs grown from the patient's own cells. Thirty people have received lab-grown bladders already, and other engineered organs are in the pipeline.

The bladder technique was developed by Anthony Atala of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Researchers take healthy cells from a patient's diseased bladder, cause them to multiply profusely in petri dishes, then apply them to a balloon-shaped scaffold made partly of collagen, the protein found in cartilage. Muscle cells go on the outside, urothelial cells (which line the urinary tract) on the inside. "It's like baking a layer cake," says Atala. "You're layering the cells one layer at a time, spreading these toppings." The bladder-to-be is then incubated at body temperature until the cells form functioning tissue. The whole process takes six to eight weeks.

Solid organs with lots of blood vessels, such as kidneys or livers, are harder to grow than hollow ones like bladders. But Atala's group—which is working on 22 organs and tissues, including ears—recently made a functioning piece of human liver. One tool they use is similar to an ink-jet printer; it "prints" different types of cells and the organ scaffold one layer at a time.

Other labs are also racing to make bioartificial organs. A jawbone has sprouted at Columbia University and a lung at Yale. At the University of Minnesota, Doris Taylor has fabricated a beating rat heart, growing cells from one rat on a scaffold she made from the heart of another by washing off its own cells. And at the University of Michigan, H. David Humes has created an artificial kidney from cells seeded onto a synthetic scaffold. The cell-phone-size kidney has passed tests on sheep—it's not yet implantable, but it's wearable, unlike a dialysis machine, and it does more than filter toxins from blood. It also makes hormones and performs other kidney functions.

Growing a copy of a patient's organ may not always be possible—for instance, when the original is too damaged by cancer. One solution for such patients might be a stem cell bank. Atala's team has shown that stem cells can be collected without harming human embryos (and thus without political controversy) from amniotic fluid in the womb. The researchers have coaxed those cells into becoming heart, liver, and other organ cells. A bank of 100,000 stem cell samples, Atala says, would have enough genetic variety to match nearly any patient. Surgeons would order organs grown as needed instead of waiting for cadavers that might not be a perfect match. "There are few things as devastating for a surgeon as knowing you have to replace the tissue and you're doing something that's not ideal," says Atala, a urologic surgeon himself. "Wouldn't it be great if they had their own organ?" Great for the patient especially, he means.

BusinessRe: Battling The 'too Many Business Ideas' Problem: Help! by Wallie(m): 10:13pm On Aug 12, 2011
Lol…I guess that’s what it means to be a serial entrepreneur!! This year alone, I bought 11 books from Amazon.com because I couldn’t get a copy of any of them from my local library. Topic of the books ranges from Mobile App Platform to Use Case Object Modeling. I currently have over 20 books in my Amazon.com’s shopping cart that are “Saved Items – To buy later”. I have stacks and stacks of print outs of WebPages everywhere in my house.

The funny thing is that none of what I read relates to my current profession. Oh, I also have four different companies and about 15 registered websites. Only recently did I start forfeiting my dormant companies and websites when time for renewal comes around.

If only I can find a capable person of like mind to delegate to!!!

You want to know how the US maintains superiority? Take a look at what DARPA is doing and why it was created.

"The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) was established in 1958 to prevent strategic surprise from negatively impacting U.S. national security and create strategic surprise for U.S. adversaries by maintaining the technological superiority of the U.S. military" They do research in biology, medicine, computer science, chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, material sciences, social sciences, neurosciences and more.

Today, DARPA is testing a 13,000 mph (20,921 km/h) plane, Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2, that can reach anywhere in the world within 1 hour.

Avg Commercial flight speed - 500 mph

@Wallie
fine and good,i concur that US spent such whopping amount to finance wars in the past. We are still saying the same thing. That whopping amount the spent is the root cause of the problem the are facing now and hence the reason why i said the cannot finance a war. Mind you, a lot of countries are looking foward to the day a woe will befall the US. The whole world frowns at  their imperialistic approach to matters.So dont be surprise that at the advent of a major war, countries such as Britain and Germany will take sides against them. US cannot fight any war now; not even with a country like Iran. I assure you that Iran will undermine them.
Slightly right! It is true that the US does not have an appetite for another war but that does not mean that they can’t wage one if they have to. Worst case scenario, drop both current wars and face one enemy. The weapons to level Iran’s military installations/infrastructures from the air are already at their border.

Britain is like the US’ lap dog. Whatever America says or do, the British will follow! Germany cannot defend itself anymore, case closed! Why do you think American military installations are still in Germany till today?

Do you know how many times the Predators have been shot down by the Iranians? American can  not take out Iran talk less of China.
How many times? Once and that's after how many flights over their nuclear weapons area? Moreover, is that UAV supposed to represent the best of American technology? That thing has been in service since the 90s.

You also said that America cannot take out Iran? If a country as small as Israel is willing to unilaterally attack Iran, do you think a single American aircraft carrier cannot do major damage to the whole of that country? The only people that will suffer the consequences of such action are the Saudis and the Israelis.
