Nairaland GeneralApplying This Exercise Will Enhance Your Life. If You Have Trouble Recalling Pos by Wapgod(op): 2:14am On Feb 19, 2013
Taken from
http://amebo.nstars.org
Applying this exercise will enhance your life. If you have trouble recalling positive experiences, you can gain from this exercise by picturing hypothetical experiences and this can serve as a resource for the future. Spend sufficient time on each part of the exercise to have a positive emotional feeling even if a slight one. With repetition it will become easier to evoke positive emotional responses. Modify these exercises to fit yourindividual needs.
1) Recall an instance when you felt calm and relaxed (such as on a trip or vacation). Try to relive that experience by remembering as many details as possible.
2) Remember at least three of the most positive experiences you have had during your life. Recall as many details as possible. Actually relive the emotional feelings that you had at that time.
3) Remember at least one instance when youwere successful in doing something. Pictureyourself in the situation and feel some of theoriginal pleasure.
4) Recall an act of kindness you did for someone. Feel pleasure in having performedit.
5) Recall an instance when you controlled an impulse such as overcoming a desire or an instance when you refrained form saying something.
6) Think of a positive trait you have or that someone you respect said you have.
7) Recall an instance when you felt inner strength and confidence. Try to experience that feeling by recalling the instance as vividly as possible. Make a cue that will help you remember the instance.
cool Think of something positive you would like to do. Imagine yourself actually doing it.
9) Think of something nice you can say to someone or do for someone. Imagine yourself actually saying or doing it.
10) Think of something you can do for self-improvement. Picture yourself actually improving.

IN THE very olden time, there lived a semi-barbaric king, whose ideas, though somewhat polished and sharpened by the progressiveness of distant Latin neighbors, were still large, florid, and untrammelled, asbecame the half of him which was barbaric. He was a man of exuberant fancy, and, withal, of an authority so irresistible that, at his will, he turned his varied fancies into facts. He was greatly given to self-communing; and, when he and himself agreed upon any thing, the thing was done. When every member of his domestic and political systems moved smoothly in its appointed course, his nature was bland and genial; but whenever there was a little hitch, and some of his orbs got out of their orbits, he was blander and more genial still, for nothing pleased him so much as to make the crooked straight, and crush down uneven places.
Among the borrowed notions by which his barbarism had become semified was that ofthe public arena, in which, by exhibitions ofmanly and beastly valor, the minds of his subjects were refined and cultured.
But even here the exuberant and barbaric fancy asserted itself. The arena of the king was built, not to give the people an opportunity of hearing the rhapsodies of dying gladiators, nor to enable them to view the inevitable conclusion of a conflict between religious opinions and hungry jaws, but for purposes far better adapted to widen and develop the mental energies of the people. This vast amphitheatre, with its encircling galleries, its mysterious vaults, and its unseen passages, was an agent of poetic justice, in which crime was punished. Or virtue rewarded, by the decrees of an impartial and incorruptible chance.
When a subject was accused of a crime of sufficient importance to interest the king, public notice was given that on an appointed day the fate of tile accused person would be decided in the king's arena,--a structure which well deserved its name; for, although its form and plan were borrowed -from afar, its purpose emanated solely
from the brain of this man, who, every barleycorn a king, knew no tradition to which he owed more allegiance than pleased his fancy, and who ingrafted on every adopted form of human thought and action the rich growth of his barbaric idealism.
When all the people had assembled in the galleries, and the king, surrounded by his court, sat high up on his throne of royal state on one side of the arena, he gave a signal, a door beneath him opened, and the accused subject stepped out into the amphitheatre. Directly opposite him, on theother side of the enclosed space, were two doors, exactly alike and side by side. It was the duty and the privilege of the person on trial, to walk directly to these doors and open one of them. He could open either door he pleased: he was subject to no guidance or influence but that of the aforementioned impartial and incorruptible chance. If he opened the one, there came out of it a hungry tiger, the fiercest and most cruel that could be procured, which immediately sprang upon him, and tore himto pieces, as a punishment for his guilt. The moment that the case of the criminal was thus decided, doleful iron bells were clanged, great wails went up from the hired mourners posted on the outer rim of the arena, and the vast audience, with bowed heads and downcast hearts, wended slowly their homeward way, mourning greatly thatone so young and fair, or so old and respected, should have merited so dire a fate.
But, if the accused person opened the other door, there came forth from it a lady, the most suitable to his years and station that his majesty could select among his fair subjects; and to this lady he was immediately married, as a reward of his innocence. It mattered not that he might already possess a wife and family, or that his affections might be engaged upon an object of his own selection: the king allowed no such subordinate arrangements to interfere with his great scheme of retribution and reward. The exercises, as in the other instance, took place immediately, and in the arena. Another door opened beneath the king, and a priest, followed by a band of choristers' and dancing maidens blowing joyous airs on golden horns and treading an measure, advanced to where the pair stood side by side; and the wedding was promptly and cheerily solemnized. Then the gay brass bells rang forth their merry peals, the people shouted glad hurrahs, and the innocent man, preceded by children strewing flowers on his path, led his bride to his home.
This was the king's semi-barbaric method of administering justice. Its perfect fairness is obvious. The criminal could not know outof which door would come the lady: he opened either he pleased, without having the slightest idea whether, in the next instant, he was to be devoured or married. On some occasions the tiger came out of one door, and on some out of the other. Thedecisions of this tribunal were not only fair, they were positively determinate: the accused person was instantly punished if hefound himself guilty; and, if innocent, he was rewarded on the spot, whether he likedit or not. There was no escape from the judgments or the king's arena.
The institution was a very popular one. When the people gathered together on one of the great trial days, they never knew whether they were to witness a bloody slaughter or a hilarious wedding. This element of uncertainty lent an interest to the occasion which it could not otherwise have attained. Thus, the masses were entertained and pleased, and the thinking part of the community could bring no charge of unfairness against this plan; for did not the accused person have the whole matter in his own hands?
This semi-barbaric king had a daughter as blooming as his most florid fancies, and with a soul as fervent and imperious as his own. As is usual in such cases, she was the apple of his eye, and was loved by him above all humanity. Among his courtiers was a young man of that fineness of blood and lowness of station common to the conventional heroes of romance who love royal maidens. This royal maiden was well satisfied with her lover, for he was handsome and brave to a degree unsurpassed in all this kingdom; and she loved him with an ardor that had enough of barbarism in it to make it exceedingly warm and strong. This love affair moved on happily for many months, until one day the king happened to discover its existence. He did not hesitate nor waver in regard to his duty in the premises. The youth was immediately cast into prison, and a day wasappointed for his trial in the king's arena. This, of course, was an especially important occasion; and his majesty, as well as all the people, was greatly interested in the workings and development of this trial.
Never before had such a case occurred; never before had a subject dared to love the daughter of a king. In after-years such things became commonplace enough; but then they were, in no slight degree, novel and startling.
The tiger-cages of the kingdom were searched for the most savage and relentless beasts, from which the fiercest monster might be selected for the arena; and the ranks of maiden youth and beauty throughout the land were carefully surveyedby competent judges, in order that ,he young man might have a fitting bride in case fate did not determine for him a different destiny. Of course, everybody knew that the deed with which the accused was charged had been done. He had loved the princess, and neither he, she, nor any one else thought of denying the fact; but the king would not think of allowing any fact of this kind to interfere with the workings of the tribunal, in which he took such great delight and satisfaction. No matter how the affair turned out, the youth would be disposed of; and the king would take an aesthetic pleasure in watching the course of events, which would determine whether or not the young man had done wrong in allowing himself to love the princess.
The appointed day arrived. From far and near the people gathered, and thronged the great galleries of the arena; and crowds, unable to gain admittance, massed themselves against its outside walls. The king and his court were in their places, opposite the twin doors,--those fateful portals, so terrible in their similarity.
All was ready. The signal was given. A door beneath the royal party opened, and the lover of the princess walked into the arena. Tall, beautiful, fair, his appearance was greeted with a low hum of admiration and anxiety. Half the audience had not known sogrand a youth had lived among them. No wonder the princess loved him! What a terrible thing for him to be there!
As the youth advanced into the arena, he turned, as the custom was, to bow to the king: but he did not think at all of that royalpersonage; his eyes were fixed upon the princess, who sat to the right of her father. Had it not been for the moiety of barbarism in her nature, it is probable that lady would not have been there; but her intense and fervid soul would not allow her to be absenton an occasion in which she was so terribly interested. From the moment that the decree had gone forth, that her lover should decide his fate in the king's arena, she had thought of nothing, night or day, but this great event and the various subjects connected with it. Possessed of more power, influence, and force of character than any one who had ever before been interested in such a case, she had done what no other person had done,--she had possessed herself of the secret of the doors. She knew in which of the two rooms, that lay behind those doors, stood the cage of the tiger, with its open front, and in which waited the lady. Through these thick doors, heavily curtained with skins on the inside, it was impossible that any noise or suggestion should come from within to the person who should approach to raise the latch of one of them; but gold, and the power of a woman's will, had brought the secret to the princess.

And not only did she know in which room stood the lady ready to emerge, all blushing and radiant, should her door be opened, butshe knew who the lady was. It was one of tile fairest and lovelies-L of the damsels of the court who had been selected as the reward of the accused youth, should he be proved innocent of the crime of aspiring to one so far above him; and the princess hated her. Often had she seen, or imagined that she had seen, this fair creature throwing glances of admiration upon the person of her lover, and sometimes she thought these glances were perceived and even returned. Now and then she had seen them talking together; it was but for a moment or two, but much can be said in a brief space; it may have been on most unimportant topics, but how could she know that? The girl was lovely, but she had dared to raise her eyes to the loved one of the princess; and, with all the intensity of the savage blood transmitted to her through long lines of wholly barbaric ancestors, she hated the woman who blushed and trembled behind that silent door.
When her lover turned and looked at her, and his eye met hers as she sat there paler and whiter than any one in the vast ocean of anxious faces about her, he saw, by that power of quick perception which is given tothose whose souls are one, that she knew behind which door crouched the tiger, and behind which stood the lady. He had expected her to know it. He understood her nature, and his soul was assured that she would never rest until she had made plain to herself this thing, hidden to all other lookers-on, even to the king. The only hope for the youth in which there was any element of certainty was based upon the success of the princess in discovering this mystery; and the moment he looked upon her, he saw she had succeeded, as in his soul he knew she would succeed.
Then it was that his quick and anxious glance asked the question: "Which?" It was as plain to her as if he shouted it from where he stood. There was not an instant tobe lost. The question was asked in a Rash; itmust be answered in another.
Her right arm lay on the cushioned parapet before her. She raised her hand, and made a slight, quick movement toward the right. No one but her lover saw her. Every eye but his was fixed on the man in the arena.
He turned, and. with a firm and rapid step he walked across the empty space. Every heart stopped beating, every breath was held, every eye was fixed immovably upon that man. Without the slightest hesitation, he went to the door on the right, and opened it.
Now, the point of the story is this: Did the tiger come out of that door, or did the lady?
The more we reflect upon this question, the harder it is to answer. It involves a study of the human heart which leads us through devious mazes of passion, out of which it is difficult to find our way. Think of it, fair reader, not as if the decision of the questiondepended upon yourself, but upon that hot-blooded, semi-barbaric princess, her soul at a white heat beneath the combined fires of despair and jealousy. She had lost him, but who should have him?
How often, in her waking hours and in her dreams, had she started in wild horror, and covered her face with her hands, as she thought of her lover opening the door on the other side of which waited the cruel fangs of the tiger!
But how much oftener had she seen him at the other door! How in her grievous reveries had she gnashed her teeth, and torn her hair, when she saw his start of rapturous delight as he opened the door of the lady! How her soul had burned in agony when she had seen him rush to meet that woman, with her flushing cheek and sparkling eve of triumph; when she had seen him lead her forth, his whole frame kindled with the joy of recovered life; when she had heard the glad shouts from the multitude, and the wild ringing of the happy bells; when she had seen the priest, with his joyous followers, advance to the couple, and make them man and wife before her very eyes; and when she had seenthem walk away together upon their path of flowers, followed by the tremendous shouts of the hilarious multitude, in which her one despairing shriek was lost and drowned!
Would it not be better for him to die at once, and go to wait for her in the blessed regions of semi-barbaric futurity?
And yet, that awful tiger, those shrieks, thatblood!
Her decision had been indicated in an instant, but it had been made after days andnights of anguished deliberation. She had known she would be asked, she had decidedwhat she would answer, and, without the slightest hesitation, she had moved her hand to the right.
The question of her decision is one not to be lightly considered, and it is not for me topresume to set myself up as the one person able to answer it. And so I leave it with all ow you: Which came out of the opened door,--the lady, or the tiger?

Akpors' family wheeled Grandma out on the field, in her wheelchair, where the activities for her 100th birthday were taking place.
Grandma couldn't speak very well, but as part of people who were opportuned to go to school in the early days in Nigeria, she could write notes when she needed to communicate.
After a short time out on the field, Grandma started leaning off to the right, so some family members grabbed her, straightened her up, and stuffed pillows on her right.
A short time later, she started leaning off to her left, so again the family grabbed her and stuffed pillows on her left.
Soon she started leaning forward, so the family members again grabbed her, then tied a pillowcase around her waist to hold her up.
Akpors - a grandson who arrived late came running up to Grandma and said,
"Mama, you're looking good! How are they treating you?"
Grandma took out her little jotter and slowly wrote a note for Akpors...

LAFF MATTERS
(This happened many years ago... Enjoy)
Late in 1994, an 87 year old man passed on in a village close to Amai, Kwale, Delta State.
The late man's grand son, Ufiaka (26 years old and fairly educated), was given some money and asked to travel to Agbor to buy a fine casket for his grand pa's burial.
Ufiaka left base early and arrived Agbor in good time to purchase the casket and make the return journey same day.
He was fortunate to get an open back white colored Peugeot 404 pickup heading for Amai. He,however, had to ride in the back of the pickup with the casket because two market women traveling to Amai were already seated in front with the driver.
On the home journey, they ran into a heavy rain storm close to Uronigbe and Ufiaka quickly opened the casket, lay himself nicely in the well padded interior, covered the lid and used the folded newspaper he had with him to leave a small opening between the lid and the main bodyof the white casket to ensure adequate ventilation.
The interior of the casket was very comfortable and Ufiaka soon fell into a very deep sleep.
The rain had subsided at the time the pickup van arrived at Umutu and during a brief stop there, two men traveling to Amai boarded the vehicle atthe back and the same happened at Ubiaruku where a man and a woman traveling also to Amaientered the vehicle. All this while, Ufiaka was enjoying his beauty sleep inside the Casket completely unaware of the new passengers who boarded at Umutu and Ubiaruku.
The pickup van arrived Amai just after 5p.m. and the driver, who was now very hungry, stopped in front of a busy bukataria to have a quick bite before proceeding onto the next village.
The sudden stoppage and revving of the pickup's engine woke Ufiaka who then opened the lid of the casket and rose up.
Trouble come start!
The passengers in the back of the pickup jumped out of the vehicle from various points and took to their heels in various directions.
The people eating in the buka (including the mama-put and her service girls) who saw the white casket open, and a "ghost" step out, ran off all over the place some with balls of eba and akpu in their hands.
Ufiaka, seeing people running 'helta skelta' was convinced that armed robbers were operating and decided to take-off in the direction three of the passengers, including the woman, were running.
When the three passengers realized that Ufiaka was running towards them, they increased their speed and shouted "ghost! ghost!" and, to further worsen the situation, Ufiaka was dressed in whiteup and down with white shoes to match that day.
With the shouting of 'ghost', other people in their homes came out to see what was going on and onseeing people running at high speed all over, theyjoined in the race for their dear life and the number just swelled.
The driver and the two market women were the only people who knew what was on going and they had a hell of a time calming the people down and explaining that … he merely needed shelter, while it was raining.

How to overcome our challenges – OBJ, Anyaoku
* Say the nation ‘ll rise above present challenges
Elder Statesmen- former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations, yesterday, reviewed the state of the nation in 2012 and proffered suggestions on how to overcome the present challenges.
In separate statements, both leaders acknowledged the efforts the Goodluck Jonathan administration is making to tackle the challenges and concluded that Nigeria would rank among the greatest countries of the world in the nearest future.
Addressing newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Obasanjo lamented that despite the abundant resources the country was endowed with, the country could not manage it well.
*Anyaoku and Obasanjo
Obasanjo who was thanking God for His mercies over the country, said despite the bombings and other dangerous activities, he believed that the country would achieve peace.
“On Boko Haram, I know we will get there very soon and Nigeria will enjoy peace and tranquility,”Obasanjo said.
While speaking on alleged mismanagement of resources by the leaders, Obasanjo said “God has been extra generous to Nigeria; many nations ofthe world are not as richly endowed as Nigeria.”
He, however, urged Nigerian leaders to harness the country’s endowments for the transformation of the nation.
“I believe good people will be able to manage it,maybe later. But the earlier we are there, the better and I am sure we will be there. We will bethere because God has been kind to us, we only need to be kind to ourselves. God will help us.”
In his end of year comment, Chief Anyaoku said: “2012 is ending with a number of our national challenges remaining acute among which are insecurity, corruption, and dilapidated state of our roads.
“But the year has also seen some improvements in such areas as agriculture, foreign direct investment, railways, power and macroeconomic management. I believe that if the hopes kindled by President Jonathan’s administration are actualised, and the country’s present inefficient governance architecture is far-sightedly reformed in the ongoing constitutional review, 2013 and the year after will be the years of a decisive march towards theNigeria of our dreams.”

He said the nine cultists were also picked up in Ahoada East Local Government Area, adding thatthey had unleashed terror at Ochiyba communityin the area before security men swooped on them.

PoliticsJonathan’s 2015 campaign posters flood Abuja by Wapgod(op):
PRESIDENCY 2015: Uproar greets Jonathan’s posters
ABUJA—Barely 24 hours after the re-election campaign posters of President Goodluck Jonathan hit Abuja, unknown persons have vandalised the publicity materials placed in strategic locations in the Federal Capital Territory as uproar greeted the mysterious appearance of the posters.
Checks by Vanguard revealed that most of the posters in Asokoro, where influential Nigerian politicians and economic players reside, had been either defaced or removed. As at 4pm yesterday, the President’s posters around ECOWAS, AYA, Gowon Crescent and adjoining streets had been taken off and replaced with some other religious or social publicity materials.
However, a few of the President’s campaignmaterials displayed around the premises of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Secretariat in Wuse 5 and surrounding areas, were still intact as at press time. It was not clear who defaced or removed the posters just as no one has claimed responsibility for placing them in the first place.
Call peddlers to order, Ohanaeze, ACF urge Jonathan
This is coming as the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) urged the President to call those placing the posters to order and the Jigawa State House of Assembly asked the state Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, to run forthe presidency.
Umbrella body of Igbo socio-cultural organizations, Ohanaeze, said the posters were plots to destabilise the polity.
Outgoing Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Chief Nduka Eya, told Vanguard that it wouldbe difficult to believe that Jonathan had knowledge of the posters because “from what we know of the president’s character, he cannot do such a thing.
“Some evil minded people may be responsible for the printing of these posters which appeared on the streets of Abuja on the first day of year 2013 when Nigerians are still in festive mood. This is aimed at causing more crises and overheat a country that is already experiencing a lot of problems.
*Campaign posters
“2015 is still very far and it is absurd for anybody to start campaign for the presidency now. Jonathan had promised us that he will run for only one term of four years. If he decides not to keep his promise and decides to run for another term, then he must come out and say so, then Ndigbo will determine the next line of action, but that must be discussed,” he averred.
ACF National Publicity Secretary, Anthony Sani doubted if those who placed the posters did it with the consent of President Jonathan because “this is not time for politics but for governance.”
Said Sani: “I am not aware of any posters of President Jonathan flooding the streets of Abuja. But I do not think such would be by the consent of the President, since he told the nation recently that he was yet to make up his mind as to whether to contest or not. More so that a case of whether he can stand for 2015 is still in court. I believe because this is not time for politics, but for governance, the Presidency should call thoseplacing the posters to order.”
They are expressing their views – Presidency
However, the Presidency, yesterday, disowned the posters.
Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to thePresident, Dr. Reuben Abati, in an interview, said the posters did not emanate from the presidency and that the President has not authorised anybody to print any campaign poster for him as reagrds 2015 elections.
According to Abati, those pasting the posterswere trying to express their own view. The President, he said, had stated that he would talk about the Presidency from 2014, addingthat those doing this do not have the consent of the president.
“What is most important now is for the president to deliver on his electioneering promises to Nigerians and not embark on the pasting of posters.
“It has not come from the president. Nigerians should take the president for his word and ignore any other information to the contrary.
Asked whether the president would take measures to disuade those doing that, Abati said since the posters do not have the namesof those promoting them, there was little the president could do.
It’s act of desperation – Benue CNPP
Reacting to the issue, the Chairman of Benue State Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP, Engr. Baba Agan described theflooding of parts of Abuja with Jonathan’s 2015 presidential campaign posters as an act of desperation and a calculated attempt to create confusion to heat up the polity. He noted that the brains behind the pasting of the posters were doing so in order to fly a kite that was doomed from the onset, adding that “Nigerians would not fall for it.”
Jonathan should first redeem the nation –Bauchi CPC Chairman
The Bauchi State Chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) Aliyu AbubakarSaidu said the posters were hasty. He urged President Jonathan to redeem the country from its predicaments before talking of elections.
Saidu, in an interview with Vanguard, contended that since the election of the president into office in 2011 the country has gone through very turbulent times, which need to be addressed to restore sanity.
We need problem-solving posters – Cleric
Bishop of Calabar Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Tunde Adeleye said what Nigerians need now is not the posters of President Jonathan for the 2015 presidential election but posters on how to tackle sufferings in the country.
Opposing the move, Bishop Adeleye said: “That is very Nigerian. That is what we do. We major in minors and then divert attention from the problems of the people. It may be the work of some stooges who will want to divert attention from the hardship and poverty we are suffering from.”
It’s too early – SSPA chieftain
Also reacting, a founding member of South South Peoples Assembly, Dr. Ambrose Akpanika said that he was confused whether the issue of 2015 should dominate the political scene of the country now because according to him, Nigeria was facing a very difficult time.
Run, Jigawa House charges Lamido
Meanwhile, the Jigawa State House of Assembly has announced its full support for the state governor, Sule Lamido to contest the 2015 presidential election. Speaking while receiving the 2013 appropriation bill, the Speaker, Alhaji Adamu Ahmad Sarawa said it had became necessary for the lawmakers to speak up considering the pressure on Lamido from all parts of the country to run.
“We deemed it a duty to us to follow suit as those working with him, we knew his competence as well as his style and qualities of leadership. We heard so much comments of former and present political leaders and traditional rulers praying for Allah to make governor Lamido the next president come 2015. May Allah accept their prayers”

Annoyed by the professor of anatomy - Prof smith who liked to tell "naughty" stories during class, a group of female students decided that the next time he started to tell one, they would all rise and leave the room in protest.
Professor Akpors, however, got wind of their scheme just before class the following day, so he bided his time.
Then, halfway through the lecture, he began.
"They say there is quite a shortage of prostitutes in France."
The girls looked at one another, arose and startedfor the door.
"Young ladies," said Professor Akpors with a broad smile, "the next plane doesn't leave till tomorrow afternoon."
