Update from SIGGY .ng As part of its move to eradicate corruption in Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Monday, Feb 21, Siggy reports. EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa met NYSC Director-General, Maj.-Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja to formalize the existing partnership between the agencies for the fight against corruption and economic crimes in Nigeria. According to Bawa, the MoU would serve as a guide on what the EFCC and the NYSC would be doing from time to time to actualize the course. He explained that though the job of the EFCC required trained officers, corps members have always contributed to its successes when the agency has a shortage of staff members. On his part, Shuaibu noted that the NYSC Community Development Service (CDS) has been creating awareness for the EFCC in the fight against corruption, adding that corps members are ever willing to put in their best in this regard. Shuaibu further urged the EFCC to arrest fraudsters extorting Nigerians through social media, with the promise of influencing their posting, redeployment, or relocation. Source: SIGGY

Update from SIGGY .ng Two unidentified male and female students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), were on Sunday evening found dead at a private hostel in the school, Siggy reports. A source at the institution said Room One of the hostel, located at the William’s Lodge, was forced open following a heavy stench oozing out from it. According to the source, the two unidentified students, a male, and a female, might have died some days ago, due to the level of decay on their corpses, without their neighbours knowing about it. It was gathered that the parents of the dead female, identified as Adaeze, had been calling her phone line for some days without any response. The source said when several calls were not responded to, the parents, in the process, became bothered and reported to the Police. The parents in company with the security operatives stormed the hostel to check on her, they met her door tightly locked. On forcing the door open, they found the two students lying dead in the room. The girl was not answering calls which got parents worried. They reported to the Police who forced the door open. No mark of violence on the bodies. “They died apparently from carbon monoxide poisoning from generator fumes. The generator was found in a closed place facing the room. The cause of death will be ascertained after autopsy.” Source: SIGGY

Update from SIGGY .ng The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on a warning strike today proposed to last for four weeks and many people especially students in Nigeria have had one or two things to say about this development, Siggy reveals. I will dropping a few facts about university lecturers in Nigeria that a lot of people don't know about: Assistant with a take-home N120 000 naira monthly would have to pay his Ph.D. school fees, pay to accomplish his Ph.D. studies, settle his family, pay to attend conferences, pay to take care of his health and that of his family, pay to publish journal articles and book chapters and pay to conduct researches. All with his slavish salary. Many don’t even know that in our condition of service as Nigerian academics, research comes before teaching. Many don’t know that the minimum you pay to publish in a Nigerian journal is N30,000, that’s minus the amount you spend to conduct the actual research. Many don’t know that for a lecturer in Nigeria to move from one level to another, he has to spend a huge percentage of his slavish salary to conduct research and also spend another huge percentage of the same salary to publish the research outcome. Many don’t know that in all Nigerian civil service, university lecturers are the only ones that plough back their meager salary into doing what they were paid the salary for… Many don’t know that for a lecturer in Nigeria to be a senior lecturer with a salary of below N250,000 monthly, he must have a Ph.D. and many journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, etc… Many don’t know that by the time a university lecturer in Nigeria becomes a senior lecturer, he must have spent half of all the salary he has earned back into his salary-earning job. Many don’t know that teaching isn’t part of the yardstick of promoting Nigerian lecturers, research and publishing the research are the parameters used in promoting Nigerian academics. Many don’t know that successive Nigerian governments, this government inclusive, have refused to review lecturers’ salaries since 2009. Despite the fact that the salaries ought to have been upwardly reviewed since 2015 at most. Many don’t know that the salary of a professor in a Nigerian university is below N350 000 naira a month. That’s a person with a degree, a master’s degree, and a terminal Ph.D., who has published widely and globally, who has produced many PhDs, M.Scs, and degree holders, and must have generated humongous human capital for Nigeria. Many don’t know that the salary of a professor in Nigerian universities is below that of a first-degree holder in many governmental institutions in the same Nigeria. Indeed, many don’t know that even if lecturers don’t teach, they have to conduct and publish the outcome of their research. Many don’t know that Nigerian lecturers are currently overburdened by insanely above capacity lecturer students ratio with no commissural benefits. Many don’t know that in almost all the struggles that university lecturers suffer, they suffer for the sustenance of the university system in Nigeria. Many don’t know that Nigerian governments are ready to pay lecturers huge salaries but at the expense of the students. Yes, the government is ever ready to geometrically increase lecturers’ salaries but students must pay tuition fees. Many don’t know that, that’s the core reason why ASUU members have to endure slavish salaries for more than a decade. Now, we should know. Members, particularly young academics are no more ready to continue living a life of abject penury because of the utopia of some ideals. Now, we should know that ASUU’s energy should be dispensed more on the welfare of its members. The number one welfare of members of ASUU should be about having a living salary. A situation where a professor earns less than a first-degree holder in the same system is not tenable. My noble union, ASUU, currently enmeshed in its NEC-for-NEC meeting should know that execution of the renegotiated and wilfully signed stance is the only panacea of stoping this total, comprehensive, and encompassing strike. Update from SIGGY .ng Some angry students of the Federal University of Akure (FUTA) descended on an infamous thug they accused of bullying and extortion, Siggy reports. The bloodied and swollen face of the thug nicknamed ''Tallest'' was shared online after he was apprehended and beaten by the students who said they had been constantly terrorized by the suspect and his gang who are neither students of the school. It was gathered that Tallest is a member of a syndicate known for harassing students outside the school premises, and always collected money and phones from students before letting them walk freely. The students also said they resorted to protesting after the extortion became unbearable, but the protest had no effect on the activities of the thugs. Tallest met his waterloo on Tuesday night, Feb 1, after he tried to extort some sets of students who refused to give in but fought back. His crew members identified as K-faction and Quadr were said to have taken to their heels leaving Tallest behind when the confrontation began. He has been handed over to Amotekun operatives in Akure, Ondo State. The first slide of the video shows tallest and his crew extorting a student while the second slide shows tallest being beaten by the university community. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ-2eQvMVAI Source: SIGGY
