Iran Happy dancers to be lashed Updated 58 minutes ago The participants were shown on state television saying they had been duped into taking part Six Iranians arrested for appearing in a video dancing to Pharrell Williams' song Happy have been sentenced to up to one year in prison and 91 lashes, their lawyer says. The sentences were suspended for three years, meaning they will not go to prison unless they reoffend, he adds. The video shows three men and three unveiled women dancing on the streets and rooftops of Tehran. In six months, it has been viewed by over one million people on YouTube. The majority of people involved in the video were sentenced to six months in prison, with one member of the group given one year, lawyer Farshid Rofugaran was quoted by Iran Wire as saying. The "Happy we are from Tehran" video was brought to the attention of the Iranian authorities in May, after receiving more than 150,000 views. Members of the group behind the video were subsequently arrested by Iranian police for violating Islamic laws of the country, which prohibit dancing with members of the opposite sex and women from appearing without a headscarf. They later appeared on state-run TV saying they were actors who had been tricked into make the Happy video for an audition. The arrests drew condemnation from international rights groups and sparked a social media campaign calling for their release. Williams, whose song was nominated for an Oscar earlier this year, also protested at the arrests. "It is beyond sad that these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness," he wrote on Facebook. BBC © 2014 |
Archbishop admits 'doubts about God' September 18, 2014 4:30 PM Archbishop of Canterbury: "There are moments, sure, when you think, 'Is there a God?' 'Where is God?'" Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has said he sometimes has doubts in his belief in God. In an interview with BBC Bristol the leader of the Church of England said he doubted in "lots of different ways". He said: "There are moments, sure, when you think, 'Is there a God?' 'Where is God?'" The archbishop has recently completed a tour of the West Country and made his comments at an event called Standing Room Only at Bristol Cathedral. When asked about doubt by presenter Lucy Tegg, he said: "It is a really good question. I love the Psalms, if you look at Psalm 88 that's full of doubt. "The other day I was praying over something as I was running, and I ended up saying to God 'look this is all very well, but isn't it about time you did something, if you're there?' "Which is probably not what the Archbishop of Canterbury should say." 'Wrong place' He went on to explain that it was acceptable to occasionally have doubt, and still be a Christian. He added: "The extraordinary thing about being a Christian is that God is faithful even when we're not. "When we get into the wrong place he comes alongside us and says, 'Right let's go from here.'" The archbishop made his comments about doubt in front of a crowd of about 1,000 people, not all of whom were churchgoers, and the event took place on 12 September. During his tour of the West Country the archbishop spent time visiting schools, churches and local charities, and the tour finished on Sunday. It was the first time he has made an official visit to the region since becoming the leader of the Church of England last year. A spokesman for Lambeth Palace said: "The remarks were made in the context of an event at Bristol Cathedral during which the archbishop spoke extensively about why he believes in God and how his faith in Jesus Christ has transformed his life. "The comments in question were made in response to a specific question about whether he had ever struggled with doubts." BBC © 2014 |
The FIFA president is usually a media friendly personality who dont hesitate to appear in any media for interview at any opportune time, but the contrary is currently the case during this ongoing world cup. What could be the reason for avoiding even his picture? |

I've google it already, but just want general enlightenment. Thanks though |
Is the six feet measurement of grave universal? I hear people of different culture talk and agree on d same grave size measurement of six feet when they want to bury their dead. How does the measurement come about and why? Contribution with evidence is welcome from everybody. |
@blawi1, thanks. What I mean is dat how do I go about my next application since I am starting an investment in agriculture. Should dat be also added to source of income next year? Thanks, u're great! |
VisaOfficer: The general rule is to wait at least six months -- it's not a law, but it gives you time to build more ties in your home country and keeps you from looking overeager. It does sound like you have pretty good ties... without interviewing you myself in person, it's hard for me to say. I don't think saying two weeks instead of three would be a deciding factor, though. Best of luck to you...@Consular Officer thank you for your response. My Friend in Texas who is inviting me said I should re-apply next year with my family. pls, what should I do and what are my chances? My biz is very stable and I have good assets. Thanking U |
@ajanlekoko and blawi1, thanks. I am grateful for ur insightful response. The VO asked which country I've bn to? I said SA. How many weeks do u plan to spend? I said 2 weeks( I later recalled I filled 3 weeks in my ds-160 online form). I went with all my supporting docs(marriage cert, my property C of O, my companies registration cert, share cert and etc) My Friend in Texas who is inviting me said I should re-apply next year with my family, I am 41yr old. Pls guys what are my chances and what uld I do? I'll soon be investing agric |
@Consular Officer, thanks. I'll wait till next year to apply again. I'm doing fine in my biz and happy with my family, only wanna go and come back. Period |
Consular Officer, thanks for your initial response. I remembered d VO asked me how many weeks I'll be spending ind US and mistakenly answered 2 weeks instead of 3 weeks which I fill in d form online. Could dat flimsy mistake cause the refusal? I have my own business, family with 2 kids and I am d owner of my property where I live. Pls I want to re-apply next year, what is my chances. My friend really want me to visit him in Texas and he's bn a citizen since 2003 thru DV. Tanx for ur quick response, what should I do, how do I prepare next year? As dat will be my 3rd attempt |
@justwise, blawi1, suxes. I really appreciate ur effort on this thread. I need ur advice on what next to do after my second visa rejection, my interview last week goes thus : VO - why are you going to d US. Me - for visit, tourism and shopping. VO - where will u stay in US? Me - with my friend in 30, addicks road, Houston, Texas VO - what do u do? Me - I operate two company, a Travel agency and a transport company. VO - how long is your stay in d US? Me - 2 weeks ( I later remember I fill 3 weeks in the ds-160 form online). VO - How much is your monthly income. Me - #250,000. VO - sorry, ur visa is not granted. I tried to ask why since d reasons in d rejection paper are what I possess(I have my own property, my family and verifiable business. All d documents are with me) Pls, this is my second visa rejection in a month and I want to apply again next year, what do I need to do, what should I correct. My friend who invited me is a US citizen since 2003 and he really want me to visit him. What are my chances next year? Could it be because I mistakenly said 2 weeks inatead of 3 weeks? I'll appreciate ur candid response, tanx. |
@visaofficer, I was denied visa again for the second time in a month yesterday, 15th of Aug. I'm just wondering what might be responsible. My interview went thus: VO - why are you going to the US? Me - to visit a bossom, tourism and some shopping. VO - where will you stay during your visit? Me - 30, Addicks road houston, Texas(my friends' residence. VO - what do you do? Me - I have two campanies, a travel agency and a transport company. VO - how much do you earn monthly? Me - #250k. VO - sorry I cant issue you US visa. I was totally deflated even tho I have all my supporting documents and I've travelled out once and also a family man. Pls, what could be responsible? |
