India’s Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a colonial-era ban on gay sex in India at the centre of years of legal battles.

“The law had become a weapon for harassment for the LGBT community,” Chief Justice Dipak Misra said as he announced the landmark verdict.

Section 377 of the Indian penal code, enacted by British rulers in 1861, banned “carnal intercourse against the order of nature”.

Activists had been fighting the ban since the 1990s, suffering several court reverses before Thursday’s verdict which sparked celebrations among lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender groups across the vast South Asian nation.

Members of the LGBT community hugged each other and cried as news of the verdict spread.

“I am speechless! It’s taken a long time to come but finally I can say I am free and I have equal rights as others,” said Rama Vij, a college student who wore a rainbow scarf.

Gay sex has long been taboo in conservative India — particularly in rural areas where homophobia is widespread.

The Delhi High Court decriminalised gay sex in 2009, but the Supreme Court reinstated legal sanctions in 2014 after a successful appeal by religious groups.

According to official data, 2,187 cases under Section 377 were registered in 2016 under the category of “unnatural offences”.

Seven people were convicted and 16 acquitted.

Two teenagers who sold a stolen laptop for N2,000, have been arrested by the operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly breaking into a shop on Jakande Estate, in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State, to steal the laptop.

The police also arrested two others – 27-year-old Adejagun Babatunde and 20-year-old Lawal Wasiu – for allegedly receiving the stolen laptop from the teenage burglars, Punch Metro reports.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, on Wednesday said the case was worrisome because minors were involved.

Imohimi said:

“The command’s operatives attached to the Ejigbo Police Division on September 2, 2018, arrested two teenagers (names withheld), aged 13 and 14, who specialised in breaking into people’s shops.

“Luck ran out on them when they burgled a shop at Block 397, Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, and made away with one generator valued at N15,000; one HP laptop, valued at N90,000; one amplifier, valued at N40,000; and one CD mixer, valued at N150,000.

“The police have arrested their adult collaborators, 27-year-old Adejagun Babatunde and 20-year-old Lawal Wasiu. The two adults bought the stolen HP laptop for N2,000 only. The adult suspects will have their day in court, while the child offenders will be handed over to the gender section for appropriate action.”

One of the teenage burglars, said he took the laptop inside an opened shop, adding that he was accompanied by his friend to a complex at Ejigbo where they were paid N2,000 for the laptop.

The second teenage suspect said he was only involved in selling the laptop.

The buyer of the laptop, Babatunde, said he got to know the boys through Wasiu.

He said:

“Wasiu came to me that the two children wanted to sell a laptop. They told me that they wanted to sell the laptop because they were hungry, adding that the laptop belonged to their brother, who was no longer a deejay.”

Wasiu said:

“The two boys said they were hungry and that I should give them money. I told them that I did not have money and I directed them to Babatunde.”

The operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested some Nigerian men after they defrauded a foreigner to the tune of €15,000.

The men are reportedly undergraduates of a university in the state and they are identified as Nicholas Lambert 22; Collins Njoku 22; Bright Chukwuezi, 23; and Chukwuemeka Ononiwu, 27 and their victim identified as Dane, Jeanette Brunsma

Parading Lambert and his accomplices, the state Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, said 11 laptops and 20 phones of different brands were recovered from them.

The CP said the suspects engaged in “advanced fee fraud, otherwise known as yahoo-yahoo to defraud the Dane.”

He said:

“After defrauding Brunsma of the €15,000, the suspects made a fresh demand of €1,500.

“The prime suspect, Lambert, met the victim on Facebook, bearing a fake name, Johnson Mills, in order to commit the crime.”

Explaining how the suspects were arrested, Galadanchi said the victim flew into the country and lodged a complaint at the state command headquarters which led to investigations by the police.

He said the victim’s statement was followed with “a digital construction analysis,” which led to the arrest of the suspects within 24 hours.

The CP said:

“The suspects; Nicholas Lambert, aka Johnson Mills of Onumonu Street, Owerri; Collins Njoku of Umudim Umuduruonyeoma, in the Ikeduru Local Governmrnt Area; Bright Chukwuezi of Umudim Umuduruonyeoma and Chukwuemeka Ononiwu also of Umudim Umuduruonyeoma, were arrested on September 3, 2018.

“They were arrested by a combined team of operatives of Scorpion Squad and Monitoring Unit of the command for advanced fee fraud.”

“The main suspect who claimed to be a US Army Sergeant by name Johnson Mills (Nicholas Lambert) serving in Kabul, Afghanistan, and his friends, who claimed to be Red Cross agents, were arrested in Imo State.

“We swooped on them at their hideout in Umuodu Mbieri, in the Mbaitoli LGA after the victim lodged a formal complaint to the police.

“The suspects have made useful statements to the police, confessing to have defrauded Jeanette Brunsma of Ringwey 10,Weiloo, Netherlands, of the sum of €15,000.

“The exhibits recovered from the suspects include 11 laptops and 20 phones of different brands.”

The prime suspect, Lambert, admitted he committed the crime.

He said:

“I met Jeanette on Facebook; I claimed to be a US solider to defraud him of €15,000.

“After the initial payment, I demanded another €1,500, after which I was arrested by the police in my hotel room.”

He said the other suspects were not aware that he made another demand on the Dane.

Social activist, Prince Emefiele Harrison who was once a prison inmate, has taken to his Facebook page to share the worrying living condition of inmates in Warri Prison where he visited recently.

Harrison who was in prison for four years awaiting trial before he was released for lack of evidence against him, paid a visit to Okere prison's yesterday September 5th, and according to him, what he saw was beyond dehumanizing.

He claimed that some of the inmates have Tuberculosis and are made to buy the drugs donated by churches or charity organization.

A former governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, has said no fewer than 15 Igbo billionaires set to fund Bianca Ojukwu's election.

He said the Igbo would not watch the wife of their leader be intimidated by anybody in any circumstance, The Punch reports.

Ohakim who described the late Ojukwu as the most selfless Igbo leader dead or alive, spoke at Ekwulobia in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State during a stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in the Anambra South Senatorial district.

He enjoined those aspiring to contest the position with Bianca to have a rethink, stressing that it would be a setback to the Igbo and a disservice to Ojukwu for anybody to work against the interest of his widow and in fact any member of his family in general.

He said:

“Those who are contesting the poll with the wife of our leader may have the money and wherewithal to muzzle down Bianca but they don’t have the same integrity.

“Bianca Ojukwu is not an ordinary human being, she is a spirit. She has double-barreled identity and double-barreled legacy.

“We have mobilised 15 Igbo billionaires to sponsor her ambition and over 25,000 youths to work for her.”

He enjoined the people of Anambra State not to disappoint the Igbo race in the Bianca project.

“Ojukwu sacrificed his Oxford education, his personal comfort, his father’s wealth to save the Igbo race at the most auspicious time”.

Bianca said she was going to the Senate to accomplish the dream of her late husband of giving the Igbo a voice in national polity.

She said:

“APGA and Igbo interests run in my veins and blood; and I have a kindred obligation to defend it and that’s why I’m going to the Senate. The Ojukwu dream must not die. We can’t abandon Ojukwu.”

Bianca, a former Ambassador of Nigeria to Spain would contest the Anambra South Senatorial poll on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Her late husband led APGA for over a decade during his lifetime, and was at several times the presidential candidate of the party.

A Kaduna Sharia Court sitting at Magajin Gari on Wednesday ruled that one Ibrahim Musa was the father of a four-month-old baby girl delivered by his wife, Aisha Buhari.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Aisha had, on July 2, dragged her husband before the court following his refusal to accept paternity of the baby she delivered.

The Judge, Malam Dahiru Lawal, after listening to both parties and their witnesses, said that under Islamic law, Musa could not now deny paternity of the baby after knowledge of his wife’s pregnancy two weeks after their marriage.

“In Islam, when one suspects his wife of infidelity and is in doubt of the legitimacy of her pregnancy, he must raise alarm and inform his (own) guardian and that of his wife immediately.

“But when a man continues having marital affairs with his wife even after the knowledge of the pregnancy, without showing contempt, then it means he has accepted the pregnancy.

“That means he is the father to the child and would take full responsibility for the child,” the judge ruled.

The respondent, who was represented by a lawyer, was asked to present himself to the court on July 16.

Musa, during hearing of the case, had told the court that he denied paternity of the baby because she was given birth to five months after their marriage.

However, Aisha told the court that Musa knew of her pregnancy two weeks after their marriage and didn’t show any sign of grief on the matter until the time she gave birth.

“We continued enjoying our marriage even after the result of my pregnancy was revealed,’’ she said.

21-year old Italian midfielder, Rolando Mandragora has been banned for one Serie A game after making “blasphemous remarks” during his team's 1-0 win over Sampdoria at the weekend.

The midfielder was caught on television shouting an insult to the Virgin Mary, while also referring to God as a dog. His “blasphemous expressions” went unnoticed by officials during the match, leading to a review by the Lega Serie A.

The Italian FA said Mandragora was “clearly seen to make blasphemous remarks, visibly identifiable from reading his lips without any margin for reasonable doubt.”

They even told the police to put a laptop on my hands so that people would think I was a yahoo boy (Internet fraudster).”

According to him, the last thing he would do is to initiate peace talks with Don Jazzy since he was the one who had wronged him.

“I don’t care about meeting him or settling things. He is a producer, I am a producer too. If he buys seven houses and I buy one, it is the same bed we will sleep on. Chocolate City Music president, Jude Abaga, aka MI, has reacted to fellow Nigerian singers, Burna boy and Wizkid' endorsement of Nasty C as the best rapper in Africa.

In an interview with Sunday scoop, MI stated that he cannot be labelled as the best all the time and that his colleagues had regarded him as the best in the past and so it is time for new generation of rappers to take over.

He also spoke on hiss relationship with former record label, Koker and insisted that there is no severance of relationship between his label and the former signee.

According to him, Koker's contract with label had expired before he left the label

South African police on Thursday said they had boarded a Russian-registered cargo ship allegedly carrying illegal weapons to Lagos, Nigeria.

The vessel, named Lada, had reportedly left Madagascar before stopping at Ngqura port outside the eastern city of Port Elizabeth, where it was detained after a security check on Sunday.

“We are aware that she has dangerous cargo — explosives and weapons — on board,” Olwethu Mdabula, spokeswoman for the Transnet state transport company told AFP.

She declined to give further details.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, spokesman for the Hawks police investigative unit, confirmed to AFP that the vessel was carrying weapons.

“This is a very, very sensitive matter. It is receiving attention,” he said.

Local reports said police had searched the vessel after an anonymous tip-off and found weapons and explosives worth about $3.5 million in 20 containers on board.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation's (Hawks') spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi told News24 that it was a "sensitive" matter.

"We are not prepared to divulge details pending a thorough assessment by different role players that have been roped in to assist," said Mulaudzi.

He said he could not yet reveal who the role players were.

"No charges have been laid against anyone and as mentioned, we are not obliged to divulge [information] until the finalisation of this process," he added.

It has been reported that the vessel was inspected following a tip-off, after it had already offloaded 14 containers at the port.

The ship had produced all the relevant permits relating to the cargo it offloaded on South African shores. The containers were dispatched by a company named Solar India.

The Herald suggested that, while the initial drop-off was above board, the tip-off alerted authorities to a further 20 containers which remained stowed away. These containers, in direct contravention of numerous laws, held illegal weapons and explosives.

A Niger bridge collapse in Dangana in the Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, left many motorists and residents stranded for more than four hours on Friday.

The people condemned the government for abandoning the structure which had reportedly gulped millions of naira.

Findings show that the bridge contract was awarded in January, 2017 at the cost of N470m by the state government to ease the suffering of motorists and commuters in the community, Punch Metro reports.

According to reports on Sunday, the project contractor, Soject Nigeria Limited, abandoned the site following the failure of the government to pay the balance of N77m.

A driver, Adamu Lapai, told our correspondent that the government was playing politics with the bridge, noting that the failure to complete the facility was causing untold hardship to the people.

“Government is extremely insensitive to the plight and the suffering of the people. If government had paid the contractor the balance of the contract sum as at last year, he would have completed the bridge by now,” he explained.

“Because of the forthcoming general elections, we learnt that the government has released N77m for the completion of the project. Honestly speaking, if they fail to complete that bridge before the election, God knows they will not get one vote from Gulu, Lapai and other communities,” Lapai added.

The motorist, who spent over four hours on the bridge, added that “There was no financial commitment on the side of the government and that was what made the work to stop thereby inflicting suffering on those using the bridge.”

The Village Head of Dangana community, Yanusa Abdullahi, said that motorists and commuters were going through difficully on the bridge, noting that farmers could no longer take their produce to the market

“People of my community and others that make use of the bridge are suffering a lot; at times they find it difficult to take their farm produce to nearby villages or towns to sell due to the collapse of the bridge.

“Without that bridge, farmers cannot go to the market to sell their farm produce. We are appealing to the state government to speed up the construction to ameliorate the suffering of the local farmers of Dangana,” Abdullahi stated.

He said the temporary diversion created by the construction company was not helping matters as vehicles were getting stranded inside the river.

The Project Manager, Suject Construction Ltd., Milad Jarbanda, gave the assurance that the bridge would be completed in 10 days.

No fewer than seven persons have reportedly died under a mysterious Chemical emission in Anambra State, following a continued burning lignite in Umuzu Mbana, Otolo Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of the State.

The lignite, which sends out gas with irritating sulphurous odour, has also led to the admission of scores of residents in different hospitals in the area, Tribune reports.

President General of the community, Tony Afam Muodielo, who made the disclosure in a statement, lamented the devastating effect of the chemical discovered at a site in that community sometime in March.

He regretted that government had not done much to save his people from the killer chemical.


According to him, a new dimension to the problem is the smoke from the site that enveloped the entire community with offensive and irritating odour that subject residents to suffocation every evening.

“The emission has recently become more damaging and escalating. Surroundings of the chemical site are caving in and the emission becomes stronger. We have tried to put out the fire burning underground to no avail and we decided to leave the rains to deal with it.

“But despite the heavy rains so far experienced this year, the fire has been as if the rains are fueling it.

“Last night [Friday], after a little rain, we were unable to sleep. The most astonishing thing is that we have been recording sudden deaths in recent time.

“Within a space of two months, we have lost seven persons and we do not known the cause of their death. But if you put two and two together, you find out that it is not natural death. We never recorded that number of deaths in the past in this community,” he lamented.

Social media went agog in the course of the past week when singer Duncan Mighty prostrated for Davido, while the pop star was in Port Harcourt, Rivers State for a music video shoot.

Duncan Mighty himself, shared the video of him bowing to Davido on his Instagram page, and many Nigerians believed it was way out of hand as Davido is considered younger than him.

In the video, Duncan Mighty appreciated Davido for doing a collaboration with him, saying the new song would open up the entire Niger Delta region and set the space for an unprecedented growth of entertainment in the region.

Explaining why Duncan Mighty prostrated himself for Davido, his manager, Michael Gabriel, in a chat with Sunday Scoop, said it was out of sheer happiness.

He stated,

“Duncan was just happy to have Davido in the Niger Delta; it was the first time he would visit for a video shoot. How many top artistes come to Port Harcourt? Everyone goes to Dubai, South Africa and other places to shoot videos. It is a big deal for someone like Davido to come to Port Harcourt and for Duncan Mighty to collaborate with him as well.

There is no week Duncan doesn’t have more than 1,000 new followers on Instagram. If you do something, people must talk. Pastor Enoch Adeboye suffers criticism despite being a man of God. According to Gabriel, Duncan Mighty has become so busy that he also now struggles to see him, even as his manager.

But in an interview with Sunday Aborishade, Monica opened up that the ICPC is finding it difficult to believe her because the professor told them she is psychotic and they believe she is because of her temperamental nature.

Are you still in good terms with your boyfriend after the scandal?

Yes, because I told him everything from the beginning to the end.

How are your parents handling the issue presently?

It took a while before my dad got to know about it. He found out the day my face was published on the front page of The Punch Newspapers. So, he asked me what happened and I told him the truth.

Did your family support your decision or reprimand you for taking such action?

My dad supported my action but my aunts were of the opinion that I shouldn’t have exposed him (Prof Akindele) because, by exposing him, I will also expose myself as well. They insisted that my action would not help my future but I have done what I think was proper already.

Did you regret your action?

Not really because Prof. Akindele made me to really suffer serious psychological trauma.

Are you being stigmatised as a result of what happened?

Oh yes! I received a lot of threats from many social media users. I suffered physical harassment at public places, especially in the banking halls. I also received a series of calls from strangers who would address me as “ashawo” “home wrecker” and “career destroyer.” People accused me of destroying the career of the professor.

How are you and your family handling the stigma?

Well, my dad is greatly worried because he paid my Master’s degree fees and I had yet to get my certificate. I read the lies that were published in favour of Professor Akindele where the vice-chancellor said I was no longer a student of the school and that I failed too many courses. Thank God, each time our results were pasted in the secretary’s office, I always wrote my grade so they can’t manipulate my result.

There are other measures you could use to handle the case, why did you choose the social media approach?

I didn’t use the social media approach. I wasn’t the one that put the audio recording on the Internet. I did record it because I needed a listening ear to help me to plead with Professor Akindele so that he could leave me alone but he wouldn’t. He called my phone constantly requesting to know where I live in school so that he could visit me. There was a time he called after a church service on a Sunday, asking me if I had changed my mind and had agreed with his terms but I blatantly said no!

Who posted the viral audio on the social media then?

I really don’t know. I submitted the audio to a woman in the Guidance and Counseling Department and the rest is history.

Did you read the defence of Prof. Akindele where he levelled some allegations against you before the panel?

Yes, I read his defence. The account of the incident as presented by Professor Akindele is really hilarious. The reason I didn’t say anything then was that I didn’t see the need to. A drowning man will say anything to set himself free, let alone a disgraced professor.

But he told the panel that you exposed your body when you entered his office

It is a lie. He lied in that same news report that I came into his office and that I exposed my body by not wearing pant and bra and that I was wearing a gown. Well, those who know me well know that I don’t own gowns as I’m always in jeans trousers, sneakers or slippers. How then would I have exposed my body?

Again, the day I went into his office to check my result was the day we rounded off our final paper. And we all went to take a group picture. Later, when I was told by the class governor that our result was out and that we should go and check it at the secretary’s office. One of my course mates walked up to me and said she saw my result with Professor Akindele and that I failed it. I told her that he had not pasted our results in his custody but she insisted that she saw mine with him. I wondered how she saw it then.

She confessed to me that she went to his office where he showed her the score sheet and she noticed that I failed. I then asked her if it’s possible for her to go with me and plead on my behalf to see the result because I couldn’t go alone since the man had earlier asked me to date him when I edited a book for him.

Did the lady follow you to Akindele’s office?

Yes. When she went into his office, he asked her to call me in and I agreed to go in with her. When I got into his office, he was sitting on his three-seater couch and the lady that types for him was seated in front of the laptop. I got in, greeted him and I told him what my course mate had told me earlier and he asked for my registration number.

Then, he brought out a piece of paper and said I failed. I requested to see it but he refused to show it to me saying it’s against the university’s policy to disclose results when it has not been pasted. Then, he kept flipping the paper in the air saying “see, see” you failed! You know you don’t know anything yet you didn’t come and see me sooner than now. Then I asked him to show me my script but he refused.

He said I should stop questioning him so I asked him what he wanted me to do and he said you know what to do. He demonstrated what he wanted with his hands raising his full palm in the air which signifies five times and pointed to his manhood at first.

I pretended not to know what he was talking about, then he told the lady that was typing for him that he wanted to go get his prayer book at home so I stepped out of his office with him. It was in his office verandah that he told me that I should sleep with him five times before anything can be done, then I said I just want to see my script. That was when he walked out on me.

What happened next?

When I got home, I was devastated so I told a friend of mine about it. He asked me to call the professor so that I could record him. My friend believed he was just trying to woo me since I know that I didn’t fail the course.

How did Akindele know that you can edit books?

The man came to our class one morning to teach us and requested either an English graduate or a Philosophy graduate that could help him edit a book.

My course mates called me out because I was the only art student in that class. He asked me to see him that day in his office between 6:30 and 7pm. I went to look for him but he wasn’t in his office so I left. He returned to class on a Wednesday and asked me to follow him to his office after the class, which I did. He gave me a book that he wrote titled, “The fundamentals of Human Resources”. He gave me the book by 10am and asked that I return it by 4pm that same day.

I went back to his office by 4pm and told him I could not finish editing it that same day so he asked me to take it home and bring it over to his office the following day which I did but when I came back the following day to return the book he wasn’t in his office so I requested for his number from the printers downstairs of our departmental basement. I called him and gave him the book then he said he was going to cross-check what I did so we parted.

Did he call you after cross-checking your editing?

Most times in class we tend to engage in group presentations so I saw him when he was leaving a classroom. I ran towards him to inform him that I didn’t have a group so he assured me that he was going to group us for the presentation which he did. He fixed a date when we should come over to his office to be grouped by 5pm that same day, it was still that day he asked me to wait behind so as to cross-check the book together.

After editing the book he asked me to sit on his lap which I refused so, I got up to leave his office then he noticed a tattoo by the side of my tummy because I was wearing a waist-high trouser with a cropped top then he said can you date me and I said no he asked why I refused his offer and told him because he is married and old. I also told him that I don’t date lecturers.

Did he pay you for editing the book for him?

When I wanted to leave his office, he said if I collect the money I charged him for editing the book, he would not help me if I fail his course and I told him I haven’t failed since my first degree and that I did my first degree in OAU, so he shouldn’t bother. While I was leaving his office, the girl that types for him came in while I walked out so I thought of all that and agreed to record him.

What is your reaction to his claims indicting you?

I’m not surprised that such a man will say anything to try and repair his already damaged reputation. But it’s such a shame to think this man is a father, a husband, a reverend, a counselor, yet he could utter such lies why not just own up to the truth and apologise? I know his apology will not repair his already tarnished reputation but at least, it will soothe the lives he had ruined. I know I’m not the first person that this man tried the nonsense with but I know that he met his waterloo through me. He said I harassed him sexually but it is this man who made my life a living hell, Since August 2017 when he kept requesting for sex, five times with me.

But you exposed him this year?

I believed that the person who leaked my audio conversation did so in February this year, did so because he was trying to cover up his track ever since I was called up for a panel in December 2017 and I refused to show up because I was scared.

Are you aware that the ICPC is already investigating the case and has started questioning Akindele?

I know that the ICPC is investigating the case as a matter of fact my phone is still in their custody since the last seven weeks. I had to go and retrieve my line because I use the line for business.

Were you also invited you for questioning?

Yes, but I really don’t know why because the professor said I am psychotic. Unfortunately, when I went for the investigation, the man questioning us agreed that I am psychotic because I am temperamental and my voice was harsh. For a government official to pass such a judgment on me when he had yet to take me to a doctor for examination, made me to lose confidence in the ICPC investigation

Are you satisfied with the punishment received by Akindele already?

I wish Professor Akindele should be charged to court. First, for assassinating my character, the psychological trauma he put me through in school due to that I couldn’t give my best when I did my project which got my supervisor saying something negative and this happened to be the same man I complained to that Professor Akindele was sexually harassing me yet he did nothing but ended up shutting me out and pretended I never tried going through the right channel to complain about such nasty act. He has no remorse for what he did, the lives he had ruined due to his corrupt act. For this reasons he should be charged to court.

Did you receive any threat as a result of your action?

Yes! I have been threatened on so many occasions and I am yet to get a job since then. The last job interview I went for about three weeks ago, the guy asked if I was “ the Monica Osagie” and I said yes and the next thing he said was sorry ma, we don’t need a whistle-blower!

What are your lawyers advising you to do next?

My lawyers are saying that I should be silent and should not say a word but if I don’t speak out my mind. My image is going to be tarnished and I wouldn’t want a situation where my future kids won’t be proud of their mother. I spoke out when no one could if by exposing Akindele by playing along makes me crazy then no problem at all. I will gladly do it all over again. That man has no iota of truth in him and as such, I have to clear my name which he tried to rubbish in the mud.

The late Aretha Franklin died on Thursday aged 76 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

A United Nations reports has revealed how Boko Haram is funded and according to the report, the predominance of the cash economy is a major factor fuelling the nefarious activities of the group in the Lake Chad Basin region.

This was contained in the 22nd Report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, pursuant to resolution 2368 (2017) concerning Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant – ISIL – (Da’esh), Al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities.

The report identified extortion, charitable donations, smuggling, remittances and kidnapping as parts of ways Boko Haram is funded, Premium Times reports.

The report was submitted to the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida and associated individuals, groups, undertakings and entities.

The Boko Haram insurgency in Northern Nigeria has caused over 100,000 deaths. The activities of the country’s security forces have largely limited the terrorists to three North-east states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. Nigerian forces are also working with those of neighbouring countries, Chad and Niger, in a multi-national force to defeat the terrorists.

In its report, the UN said the number of doctrinally based non-governmental organisations sending funds to local terrorist groups was growing, and Member States were concerned that radicalisation was increasing the threat level in the Sahel.

The report said:

“Meanwhile, Boko Haram (QDe.138) and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have had a similar impact in their areas of control, including the Lake Chad basin.

“The predominance in the region of the cash economy, without controls, is conducive to terrorist groups funded by extortion, charitable donations, smuggling, remittances and kidnapping.

“In Nigeria, 111 schoolgirls from the town of Dapchi were kidnapped on 18 February 2018 and released by ISWAP on 21 March 2018 in exchange for a large ransom payment,” the report stated.

The report was signed by Edmund Fitton-Brown, Coordinator, Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, who said the report was “comprehensive and independent”, and Kairat Umarov, Chair, Security Council Committee.
The UN Security Council committee on al Qaeda sanctions blacklisted and imposed sanctions on the Islamist militant group Boko Haram in 2014 after the insurgents kidnapped more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls.

The designation, which came into effect after no objections were raised by the Security Council’s 15 members, subjected Boko Haram to UN sanctions, including an arms embargo, asset freeze and travel ban.

The UN Security Council had last week said it remained concerned at the security and humanitarian situation caused by the Boko Haram terrorists and other armed groups in Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad.

In a Presidential Statement, the 15-member body regretted that Central African countries were beset by ongoing terrorist activity, instability and the effects of climate change, and asked Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to review the work of the UN Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), and recommend areas for improvement.

The presidential statement read:

“The Security Council strongly condemns all terrorist attacks carried out in the region, including those perpetrated by Boko Haram and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as Daesh).

“These attacks have caused large-scale and devastating losses, have had a devastating humanitarian impact including through the displacement of a large number of civilians in Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad, and represent a threat to the stability and peace of West and Central Africa.

“The Council notes with particular concern the continuing use by Boko Haram of women and girls as suicide bombers, which has created an atmosphere of suspicion towards them and made them targets of harassment and stigmatisation in affected communities, and of arbitrary arrests by security forces.

“The Council emphasises the need for affected States to counter-terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including by addressing the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism, in accordance with obligations under international law, in particular international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law”.

The Security Council welcomed the support provided by UNOCA and the UN Office for West Africa and Sahel (UNOWAS) for the development of a joint regional strategy to address the root causes of the Lake Chad Basin crisis through regular contact with regional leaders.

The Council encouraged partners to increase security assistance to Lake Chad Basin Commission countries, and humanitarian and development support across the region for those affected by Boko Haram activities.

“The Security Council remains deeply concerned at the grave security situation and related violations and abuses of human rights in parts of Central Africa, in particular the continuing terrorist activities of Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in the Lake Chad Basin,” it said.

“The Security Council expresses its ongoing concern at continued tensions linked to disputed electoral processes, social and economic difficulties, and conflicts between farmers and herders,” the statement added.

The 15-member Council noted that UNOCA’s priorities would include to work closely with UNOWAS to address trans-regional issues such as maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, conflict between farmers and herders, and combating Boko Haram.

A cop was fired after allegedly filming himself having sex with a woman. The Police officer on duty actually made the video with his police body-cam positioned to capture him while having sex in his office.

Officer Anthony Doran saved the clip of him romping with a mystery woman on a flash drive, according to court papers.

The sordid offence only came to light after he was accused of beating and falsely arresting a man in 2016.

When investigators searched his office they found his sex tape and 36 gigabytes worth of sex pics.

He stored them on his work computer in a folder called "fun times" it is claimed.

Doran told local media that his creepy stash has "nothing to do with work" and said he was not on duty when he filmed himself.

His four-minute sex tape, dated April 2017, featured him wearing his police shirt uniform, but naked from the waist down.

“Anthony is sitting in an office chair and straddling him is a naked adult female (who is not a police employee),” says the report.

The officer worked in Superior, Arizona in the United States.

He claims he lived in the police station, in a room opposite his office.

The allegations came to light after civilian Richard Manriquez filed a complaint, claiming several officers beat him up at his home in 2016.

His civil complaint accuses Superior police bosses of hiring officers with checkered histories in order to cut costs.

“The town hires substandard officers with extensive misconduct records to save money,” the complaint alleged.

“Once the town hires these substandard, ‘second-chance’ officers, it fails to appropriately train/retrain them.”

According to the Arizona Republic, most of Superior’s nine police officers were at one point fired or disciplined by other police departments. Doran was previously terminated in 2013 from the Pima County Sheriff’s Office for sexual misconduct, records showed.

Anas Aremeyaw, Ghanaian masked reporter, was nearly lynched by a mob in the Northern region of Malawi while investigating mysterious murders in an interior part of the southern African country.

The investigation, titled “Malawi’s Human Harvest” was a partnership between Anas and the BBC, and it was aimed at exposing the persons behind the killings, which included the victims’ body parts being cut off for ritual purposes.

Anas, (disguised as a business tycoon) and his crew were able to identify a local medicine man, Kamanga, who agreed to give them powers to boost his business; the only condition is that human parts will be needed for the procedure.

Kamanga then engaged two of his accomplices; they were to kill the victim and cut out the necessary body parts.

“The first thing we takeout is the genitals,” the killers boasted to the undercover reporters disguised as business men. “We take the head. If you want, we break the skull and take out the brain, or we crack the skull and pull out the tongue.”

As the group were making their plans, they were accosted by the villagers who started calling them killers and were almost going to lynch them. Even the BBC identity cards presented by Anas and his producer could not save them and all pleadings for the mob to call the police fell on deaf ears.

All the drama was caught on tape as Anas and his crew continued to film the incident.

Eventually, Anas and his colleague, as well as Kamanga and his men were able to wriggle out of the mob and ran for their lives. Kamanga and his accomplices thus escaped, though their faces had been caught on camera.

A Nigerian doctor in the UK, Dr. Hadiza Bawa-Garba, who was struck off over the death of a six-year-old boy has won her appeal to practice medicine again.

Dr Hadiza Bawa-Garba was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence in 2015 over the death of Jack Adcock, who died of sepsis in 2011.

She was struck off in January 2018.

Her appeal was funded by medics because they said the ruling would discourage practitioners from being open when reviewing mistakes.

Dr Bawa-Garba had been suspended from the medical register for a year in June 2017.

However, the General Medical Council (GMC) appealed against the decision claiming it was "not sufficient to protect the public" and she was struck off in January 2018.

Thousands of doctors signed an open letter of support for Dr Bawa-Garba stating the case would "lessen our chances of preventing a similar death".

Earlier, three senior judges quashed the High Court's decision and restored the lesser sanction of a one-year suspension.

Master of the Rolls Sir Terence Etherton, who announced the ruling, said "no concerns" had "ever been raised about the clinical competence of Dr Bawa-Garba, other than in relation to Jack's death".

"The evidence before the tribunal was that she was in the top third of her specialist trainee cohort," he said.

He added that the tribunal was satisfied her actions in relation to the boy were "neither deliberate nor reckless", and did "not present a continuing risk to patients".

Charlie Massey, chief executive of the GMC, fully accepted the Court of Appeal's judgement.

He said:

"As the independent regulator responsible for protecting patient safety we are frequently called upon to take difficult decisions, and we do not take that role lightly."

Mr Massey added the case had "exposed a raft of concerns" around the role of criminal law in medicine and the GMC had commissioned an independent review as a consequence.

Dr Samantha Batt-Rawden, chair of the Doctors' Association UK, said the decision was a "small step in the right direction for patients and doctors".

"We need to make sure that patients and families get the answers they need through open and transparent engagement with NHS organisations," she said.

"The GMC needs to rethink its priorities in enabling this to happen rather than aggressively pursuing doctors in the courts."

A group of Nigerian cultists arrested in Malaysia are currently undergoing interrogation by the Police, after a cult clash which saw them ripping out the intestines of a rival cult member.

The Nigerian Nationals arrested are reportedly members of the Vikings cult while their victim is of the .

The victim, identified as Ratty, had his intestines ripped out by the suspects, during the attack. He was later rushed to the hospital where he is recuperating.

The suspects were picked up, today, by the police.
