I have a friend who attends BC and hardly comes home except during the vacation (or when he needs money e.t.c) even though he's only about half an hour away. He uses the "i'm always busy" excuse.

i don't look at the sticker price.
from what i found out, it's more expensive to attend a state school than the most expensive private schools (for poor people like me tis tis). 'cause they give out tons of fin.aid in grants. so if i do get into Rice, i'll be getting need-based scholarship i pretty much figured out i won't qualify for merit based scholarship.
Middlebury's another school i'll be going to for almost free if i apply (i have about 80ish % chance of getting) even though their sticker price is 40+k.
but that doesn't mean i won't be applying to my state school. It's like #1 on my list.

sorry for boring you with that but i'm the one who need it. lol
