Foreign AffairsWhy Is South Africa So Ungrateful? by White007(op): 8:25am On Sep 03, 2011
At the risk of being accused of Afghanistanism (that is the journalistic equivalent of vigorously treating ringworm at the expense of leprosy) I am more interested in joining issues with the South African government today than in commenting on the bombing campaign of the Boko Haram.

Suffice it to say the obvious about the Boko Haram issue: we are faced with war, nothing less. With the bombing of the UN offices in Abuja, the war has now been internationalized. There is an elected government in power in Nigeria. Let them justify their claim to being in charge. The less said the better.

Now to the annoying issue of South Africa's open condemnation of Nigeria's support for the Libyan rebels. As Libyan rebels breached Colonel Muamar Gaddafi's official residence in Tripoli, the Nigerian government formally recognised the National Transitional Council (NTC) of Libya as that country's legitimate representative. Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, had told reporters in Abuja that Nigeria would back Libya in its bid to install democratic rule and enforce the rule of law under the leadership of the transitional council. He urged the NTC headed by Mr. Mustafa Mohammed Abdul Jalil to be magnanimous in victory and pursue programmes aimed at post-conflict reconciliation and nation building.

But the Secretary-General of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa, Mr. Gwede Mantashe, criticised the decision at a press conference in Johannesburg. "Nigeria is jumping the gun in recognising the rebels as representatives of Libya. The AU position stays," Mantashe said. The South African government itself took the same position as the ANC, except that its language was more diplomatic.

I am disturbed at the anti-Nigerian trend that has been nurtured in South Africa since the end of apartheid. More than most countries on the African continent, Nigeria was in the forefront of the anti-apartheid struggles. General Murtala Mohammed made the liberation struggle in southern Africa one of the cardinal programmes of his administration and every Nigerian government since his unfortunate assassination has toed that path.

In the seventies many of us schooled with South Africans and nationals of other southern African countries like Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Namibia who were given full scholarships by the Nigerian government. They were far richer than us because our government loaded them with tons of naira. There was no student leader of note who did not make the mandatory trip to Lagos to collect "a luta" posters from Thabo Mbeki who was the ANC representative at the time. I still have some of those posters in my study. Indeed I was telling some friends that whenever I am privileged to meet Mbeki I would remind him of those heady days when we all helped to fight their war.

Since the demise of apartheid, South Africans have not shown the kind of reciprocity one would expect of a brother. At a time there were reports of attempted lynching of Nigerians in South Africa under the excuse that they were taking up jobs meant for the country's citizens. Over here in Nigeria, you would never hear of a situation where some foreigners would be targeted for attack for any reason whatsoever.

I recall that Mrs. Winnie Mandela was taken up on this issue by a Daily Trust reporter during her last visit to the country. At that occasion, she explained as follows: "There are ordinary men on the streets who unfortunately feel invaded by the so-called foreigners. But we all know that it is wrong to regard our fellow Zimbabweans, Nigerians, etc., as 'foreigners' because that does not apply to other nationalities. We have never heard of xenophobia against Italians or Greeks. It is all to do with the fact that the other countries are not as rich as South Africa. It is as a result of citizens of other countries coming to look for greener pastures in South Africa and the feeling that people from other countries have taken their jobs."

Winnie Mandela also felt that the problem was, to an extent, generational. "It ought to be known to South Africans that Nigeria contributed a great deal towards our liberation. The younger generation would not necessarily know this except for those few who are survivors. It is no secret that we have had our awkward moments with various countries because of the situation in South Africa. It was in that sense that I thought we should know that we have special relations with Nigeria.

Apart from the great Nelson Mandela himself, no high official in the South African government over the years has shown respect or appreciation for our contributions to their liberation. It was therefore not surprising to hear Gwede Mantashe's presumptuous indictment of Nigeria. He has problems with memory. We should remind him that his party, the ANC was seen as a terrorist organization by the apartheid regime in South Africa. But Nigeria accorded diplomatic status to the ANC and bankrolled many of its activities, including the cost of educating their children in Nigerian universities. Today's rebel in a just war is tomorrow's government. At any rate, every country has a right to run its foreign policy the way it deems fit. Or is South Africa now the senior prefect of African diplomacy?

I concede that Gaddafi was one of the donors towards the cause of liberation in Southern Africa. So was Nigeria. The perpetual colonel known as the strongman of Libya has also funded terrorism in many parts of the world. Aside that, he had been in power for 42 years! If his people now say it is time for him to go and that the whole world should help liberate them from the iron grips of their dictator, who is South Africa to tell them who their leaders should be?

Over the years we have also shown the same African brotherliness to Liberia, Sierra-Leone, Somalia, Congo, etc. What have we gained? If international diplomacy is supposed to be on the basis of reciprocity, where on earth did we miss the boat as to be at the receiving end of our African brothers' ingratitude now and again? Perhaps it has to do with the inability of our governments to draw in on the various diplomatic IOUs spread all over the continent.

Let's make one important point loud and clear: Nigeria may be underachieving, we may not be living up to our potentials, but let no one be in any doubt as to our historic role on this continent. The least South Africa can do is show some gratitude. An ingrate is but a robber in disguise.

For uttering those anti-Nigerian sentiments, Gwede Mantashe should wash his mouth with Dettol!

PhonesRe: What Is So Special About The iPhone? by White007(m): 10:59am On Aug 28, 2011
The Retina display on iPhone 4 is the sharpest, most vibrant, highest-resolution phone screen ever, with four times the pixel count of previous iPhone models. In fact, the pixel density is so high that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels. Which makes text amazingly crisp and images stunningly sharp.

When creating iPhone 4, Apple designers and engineers didn’t start with a clean sheet of paper. They started with three years of experience designing and building the phones that redefined what a phone can do. iPhone 4 is the result of everything they’ve learned so far. And it’s all contained in a beautiful enclosure a mere 9.3 millimeters thin, making iPhone 4 the world’s thinnest smartphone.

The iPhone 4 introduces a gyroscopic sensor that detects 3-axis angular acceleration around the X, Y and Z axes, enabling precise calculation of yaw, pitch, and roll. The gyroscope complements the accelerometer, a sensor that has been present since the original iPhone, which detects the device's acceleration, shake, vibration shock, or fall by detecting linear acceleration along one of three axes (X, Y and Z). The combined data from the accelerometer and the gyroscope provides detailed and precise information about the device's 6-axis movement in space. The 3 axes of the gyroscope combined with the 3 axes of the accelerometer enable the device to recognize approximately how far, fast, and in which direction it has moved in space.

CrimeMan Pushes Neighbour Off Bridge, Steals His Motorcycle by White007(op): 10:25pm On Aug 26, 2011
There seems to be no limit to what a man can do to look for money.

This is true of 20-year-old Isaac Matthew, who caused a stir at the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department when he narrated how he allegedly killed his neighbour, Solomon Gbeleyi, an Okada rider, in order to steal his motorycle.

Matthew, an indigene of Jupe, Badagry, said he pushed Gbeleyi off a bridge and took off with the man's motorcycle.

After weeks of searching the hospitals, mortuary and the area where Gbeleyi fell and not finding anything, the police concluded that Gbeleyi probably drowned and his body washed away by the river under the bridge. They therefore declared that he was dead.

Gbeleyi family said they were at loss on whether to conduct a burial for him or continue to live with his memory.

But Matthew was sure that his neighbour could not have survived the fall from the bridge.

He told policemen from the SCID, "On July 8, 2011, around 7:30pm, I asked Gbeleyi to take me to Seme border.

"Since we both live in Oko Afo, he decided to take me. More so, I told him that we would come back together.

"We got to Gbagi bridge around 9pm. I told Gbeleyi to stop, saying that I wanted to ease myself.

"While I was easing myself, Gbegi said he was also pressed and stood on the edge of the bridge to ease himself.

"At that point, I did not know what came over me. I just saw that I moved near Gbeleyi and gave him a hard shove. He tumbled off the bridge and landed with a loud splash in the water below the bridge."

Whatever came over Matthew prevented him from helping the drowning man.

Instead, he jumped on Gbeleyi's motocycle and fled the scene with the okada.

The okada was new and unregistered so Matthew decided to make quick money by selling it.

Matthew told police interrogators that after the incident, he spent the rest of the night at his friend's house.

"I told my friend that the okada was mine. I knew it was dangerous to return to Oko Afo with the okada and there was no way I could sell it in the morning, so I asked him to lend me N10,000 and hold on to the bike as a collateral."

Probably smelling a rat, the friend declined the proposal. Matthew was thereafter forced to remain with the friend.

It was gathered that the following day, around 5am, Matthew went back to the crime scene and waited there for some hours.

Coincidentally, while Matthew was at the crime scene, a man who had lost N120,000 worth of goods to thieves sometime ago, had identified Matthew as one of the culprits and immediately raised the alarm. He was later handed over to the Trinity Police Station, Apapa.

PUNCH METRO learnt that at the Police Station, Matthew owned up as being one of the robbers and said it was the money he got from selling the stolen goods that he used to buy the okada. Matthew was later granted bail but police held unto the okada until he would pay N120,000 back to the victim.

After getting rid of the motorcycle, Matthew went back to Oko Afo; but unknown to him, somebody saw him when Gbeleyi was taking him to Seme. The people of the town were therefore looking for both of them thinking once one was found, the other would be found.

When Matthew came back to the town without Gbeleyi, the residents were not ready to listen to any explanation. They promptly arrested him.

Matthew who has confessed to the crime, also told PUNCH METRO that he was pushed into the act because he needed money.

He said he went back to the scene because he was not at rest, "My conscience kept pushing me back to the scene," he said.

He added that now that everybody knew what he did, he felt at peace.

A police source told our correspondent that the case file would soon be closed, while Matthew would be taken to court.

He said, "We have not been able to recover Gbeleyi's corpse since the incident.

"We have gone to the crime scene, where Gbeleyi fell off the bridge and landed in water. Although we haven't found his corpse, we are sure he is dead because no one could have survived that fall." the senior policeman said.

Spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, said the police would still put finishing touches to its investigation before going to court.

CrimeNigerian Sisters Jailed In UK for 6months For Stealing 10 Packs Of Chewing Gums. by White007(op): 8:33pm On Aug 16, 2011
Aftermath London riots: Shonola Smith, sister jailed for 6 months 'When (her sister), Alicia, from South Norwood, was arrested, she was carrying 10 packs of chewing gum she had stolen from a convenience store on the same day. She admitted theft.'

Acourt sitting in London, over the weekend sentenced Shonola Smith and her sister, Alicia Smith to jail after admitting "trying to steal from a smashed store in the riots."

The two sisters said to be British-born, but of Nigerian parentage, were jailed alongside their friend, Donness Bissessar, a 22-year-old Briton.

They all got six months separate jail terms.

Twenty-two-year old Shonola, a model, was caught outside Argos in Croydon and arrested with her sister, Alicia, and their friend Donness.

During trial, the trio admitted entering the Argos store "with intent to steal" last Monday night.

The Mirror of London reported that "when Alicia Smith, from South Norwood, was arrested, she was carrying 10 packs of chewing gum she had stolen from a convenience store on the same day. "She admitted theft."

The newspaper reported a lawyer for the girls quoted their parents as saying that they "have found it really very hard to fathom what's going on."

Sentencing the trio at Croydon magistrates, the District Judge Robert Hunter, reportedly said: "The tragedy is you are all of previous good character, each well educated.

"You have jobs. You have shown remorse. However, you played your part in a wider act where devastation was caused."

A lawyer for the girls said: "Their parents have found it really very hard to fathom what's going on."

Before convicting Shonola, from South Norwood, she was found to be part of a mob that smashed in the Croydon town centre shop last Monday night.

She was said to have been accompanied by her sister Alicia and their friend Donness, both from Croydon.

All three, who said to have no previous convictions, the reason they bagged six months imprisonment after each pleaded guilty to "entering the store with intent to steal."

They were arrested by police at the scene.

The judge while convicting them, according to London's Daily Mail simply said "I can't ignore the context in which these offences were committed."

The judge further said: "In my view, although I'm retaining jurisdiction, the matter is so serious that only a custodial sentence will suffice. That, I hope, will serve as a deterrent to others."

In London, six months is the maximum jail sentence a magistrate can impose for one offence.
CrimeEfcc hands Over Indicted Nigerian Fraudster To U.s. Authorities by White007(op): 10:00pm On Aug 15, 2011
THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday announced that it had handed an alleged Nigerian scammer, Emmanuel Ekhator, over to United States (US) authorities over a $32 million Internet collections scam.

The agency's Chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri, did the handing over, according to EFCC spokesman, Femi Babafemi.

The suspect was arrested in Benin City, Edo State, in August last year by EFCC operatives, following top level exchange of information between US saw enforcement agents and the EFCC over the activities of a trans-border ring of Internet scammers, allegedly headed by Ekhator.

Babafemi disclosed stated that the extradition process was filed through the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and was eventually approved by a Federal High Court in Lagos on July 26, this year.

According to him, the suspect has been flown to the US and handed over to a District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania on Thursday by an officer of the EFCC.

Speaking on the extradition yesterday, Waziri tasked operatives working on other pending similar cases to intensify their efforts.

She said: "With the latest extradition in addition to the two earlier done, and the two others pending, the message should be clear to anyone who travels abroad to commit crime and run back home to hide that Nigeria is no longer safe for them because, we will get them and hand them over to face the law.

She vowed that Nigeria will no longer be a safe place for Nigerian fugitive criminals fleeing from law enforcement agents in other countries

Ekhator is the third Nigerian fugitive to be handed over to the US authorities by the EFCC, while two others are presently awaiting extradition to the US.

George Ubeozor was extradited in 2008 and Sunday Adebisi Adegbesan was handed over in 2009, both to the authorities in New York.

You should be comparing Nigeria with Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore.

Ethiopia are exporting Electricity to Kenya, south sudan, sudan, Djibouti.

They have about one of the most relaible and consistent airline in Africa.

All this with little or no resources, but with good management, less corruption.
