Foreign AffairsParents Lose Custody Of Newborn Named Adolf Hitler by White007(op): 8:50pm On Nov 20, 2011
Heath and Deborah Campbell, the New Jersey parents of three children with Nazi-inspired names, lost custody of their fourth child 17 hours after he was born, the Express-Times of Lehigh Valley, Pa., reported.

Hons Campbell was taken into custody by the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services late Thursday night after the doctor who delivered the baby called the agency, the paper reported.

“There’s no legal binding court order. It’s basically a kidnapping, but they use different terms,” Heath Campbell told the Express-Times.
The Campbell family stepped into the spotlight in December 2008 when a ShopRite grovery store declined to decorate a birthday cake for their son Adolf Hitler Campbell’s third birthday.

The state took custody of Adolf, along with his sisters JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell and Honszlynn Himler Jeannie Campbell, in January of 2009. The three children have remained in foster care ever since.

A DYFS spokesperson told ABCNews.com in 2009 that she could not comment on a specific case, but said children are only taken into custody if there is a suspicion of abuse or neglect.

“We would never remove a child simply based on their name,” the spokeswoman said.
Neighbor Lori Dilts told ABCNews.com at the time the children were taken that it was certainly not because of their names.

“Those children look outwardly healthy, but they didn’t have much freedom,” Dilts said. “Occasionally, the little boy would come over here and would hate having to go back to his house.”

The couple’s attorney, Pasquale Giannetta, told The Associated Press that a court a hearing has been scheduled for Monday to determine the custody status of the newborn.

PoliticsChurch Wedding: Anatomy Of Nonsense by White007(op): 11:28am On Nov 20, 2011
As a writer, I do not look at faces. Church wedding is absolute nonsense without scriptural foundation. The idea of pastors joining anyone together can be supported by books written by the so-called men of God, but you will find no single Bible verse to support it. Real wedding is what we call engagement in Nigeria.

"You may now kiss your bride," they say, but nine times out of 10, the lady is already pregnant. It is a shame, but my niece once chatted her mother up on a show-of-shame wedding on Gbasemo Street, Ikorodu, where a naked bride and her equally naked friends were dancing in the church. They were US-based, and had reportedly offered the ministers a large sum. The ministers, loyal servants of their bellies, said nothing about their dressing. Before long, thugs and a few locals had stormed the frontage of the church, shouting obscenities at the ladies. "Ori awon eleyi daru ni?" (Are these ones mad?), etc. Now, what my niece said (and I do not feel comfortable saying it) : "My mummy, that sister is wearing blue panties."

It makes absolutely no economic sense to buy a foolish gown which you will never put on again. I have heard the claim that the gown will be put on the woman when she dies, but how do you know that you will die where your clothes are, or that that gown would still be your size? This is pure foolishness. Again, I'm still at a loss as to why Nigerians cannot just put on native attire at their reception. Certainly, my own God is not English; He is the Lord of Glory, a most gracious God who has not instructed me to copy any culture without applying a bit of commonsense. If you cannot see revelation here, it is a sign that you are not meant to see.

A teacher who earns N20,000 a month will nevertheless want to kill a cow, rent a hall which costs N200,000, and make a cake which will be the talk of the town. Actually, we do not need a cake on a wedding day; what we need is sufficient amala and pounded yam for our people, with a lot of egusi. I was bored stiff once in Ondo when, acting the best man for the first (and now I know, the last) time, the best lady started pouring some creamy / foamy nonsense on me. Notice that I am not condemning the beautiful idea of a best man, but I had previously disagreed with the best lady who wanted me to wear hand gloves, when I was not a foolish corpse, or a parade commander. Yes, of course I wore a suit, but I put it off during the reception because the place was quite hot. And I asked for my food while some people were busy giving senseless admonitions which I knew they themselves did not observe in their homes.

Let me tell you about Pastor Ganiyu, a relation of mine. Well, this man insisted on one Brother Gbenga's wedding day that the offering, which the church normally collected before joining any couple together, must be N30,000, or no wedding. People made donations and N28,000 was realised, but Pastor Caniyu said no way. Eventually, Pastor Ganiyu joined the couple at a few minutes past 4p.m, but Gbenga was fuming.

"Upon all my work in this church as an interpreter, Pastor Caniyu, my own very brother, has refused to join me and my wife. All my ogas who I wanted to give cake to have gone! This is wicked. This is my last day in this church!" And it was. Both are extended relations of mine, and do not make the mistake of thinking that I have invented a fable. The bride was very hungry, but said she did not want to eat while wearing the gown, but Pastor Ganiyu would not budge. The Muslims who came to the wedding were saying: "Is this how Christianity is? Well, we do not do our own things like that!" What a shame!

The pastors are jesters on wedding day. They speak for too long, making the day theirs. My sister told me that she once attended a church wedding, which still had not ended at 5p.m. Eventually, she had to leave in anger, because she and my niece were by then very hungry. Commonsense ought to tell you, Mr Pastor, that a wedding day is actually a day meant for the couple. Why do you speak for so long? It is to milk the people dry. The God that I serve will never collect offering from unbelievers. Before God accepts anything from you, He first washes you by the waters of regeneration. But the pastors can take money from anyone, even the devil. Men like Orekoya and Babalola are gone. But I am happy we still have men like Amos Omoboriowo, men who do not care a hoot about your money, God-called men who will never join anyone together. And men like me, sent with a liberation message for those who recognise wisdom, not fools who argue their way right into hell. Nigerian weddings are full of expensive rubbish; that is why many don't marry until they are as old as Galilee. Now, having read this, I have no doubt that you will think very well before inviting me to your wedding. Mark those who say "Wedding is only done once." They will not be there when you start your married life in penury.

Iran is defying the United States on letting inspectors come in and search for nuclear bombs or missiles. Everyone knows they either have them or will have them soon. Next step is to develop a delivery system planes or missles. Iran will defy the U.S. and threaten war, they U.S. will threaten, but they know if they attack Iran, Russia is their allie and will be bound to help them. While Iran may not not have a delivery system to bring nukes to U.S. soil, Russia has several ways.
So little Iran could cause global nuclear war. End result Iran could cause and end to the world as we know it. . .

PoliticsRussian Military Chief: All-out Nuclear War Risks Have Grown by White007(op): 5:13am On Nov 18, 2011
MOSCOW (AP) — Russia is facing a heightened risk of being drawn into conflicts at its borders that have the potential of turning nuclear, the nation's top military officer said Thursday.

Gen. Nikolai Makarov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces, cautioned over NATO's expansion eastward and warned that the risks of Russia being pulled into local conflicts have "risen sharply."

Makarov added, according to Russian news agencies, that "under certain conditions local and regional conflicts may develop into a full-scale war involving nuclear weapons."

A steady decline in Russia's conventional forces has prompted the Kremlin to rely increasingly on its nuclear deterrent.

The nation's military doctrine says it may use nuclear weapons to counter a nuclear attack on Russia or an ally, or a large-scale conventional attack that threatens Russia's existence.

Russia sees NATO's expansion to include former Soviet republics and ex-members of the Soviet bloc in eastern and central Europe as a key threat to Russia's security.

Makarov specifically referred to NATO's plans to offer membership to Georgia and Ukraine as potentially threatening Russia's security. Russia routed Georgian forces in a brief August 2008 war over a separatist province of South Ossetia. Moscow later recognized South Ossettia and another breakaway Georgian province of Abkhazia as independent states and increased its military presence there.

Makarov warned that the planned pullout of NATO forces from Afghanistan could trigger conflicts in neighboring ex-Soviet Central Asian nations that could "grow into a large-scale war."

In its military doctrine, Russia has also described U.S. missile defense plans as another major security challenge, saying it could threaten its nuclear forces and undermine their deterrence potential.

Moscow has agreed to consider NATO's proposal last fall to cooperate on the missile shield, but the talks have been deadlocked over how the system should operate. Russia has insisted that the system should be run jointly, which NATO has rejected.

Makarov also said Russia is struggling to get enough recruits for the 1-million military, as the number of draftees has shrunk dramatically because of demographical changes.

He said that the military is aiming to gradually increase the number of contract soldiers and eventually form an all-volunteer army. He didn't mention a specific time frame.

The statement marked a sharp change of course for the top military brass who previously insisted that Russia needs to maintain the highly unpopular draft because an all-volunteer military would be too costly.

PoliticsArmy Deploys Us-trained Nigerian Commandos In The North by White007(op): 3:30pm On Nov 14, 2011
Crack Nigerian Army commandos, who just concluded a special training in the United States, have been deployed in the North to combat the terrorist attacks, SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt.

Our correspondents gathered that the commandos were part of the personnel of the Nigeria Army who left the country for a crack training programme on counter terrorism in the US.

A very reliable Federal Government source, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, put the number of those who departed the country for the first batch of counter insurgency training, at 300.

Another reliable source said those who participated in the programme were drawn from the Nigerian Army Engineering Anti-bomb Squad.
The sources said the beneficiaries of the training programme in the US had since been deployed in various places under the Joint Task force in the North-East, which has been locked in a fierce battle with the deadly Islamic sect.

The Guardian of London had on Thursday reported that the US army provided counter-insurgency training to Nigerian troops battling a rise in attacks by the fundamentalist Boko Haram sect.

The Director of Army Information, Maj. Gen. Raphael Isah, who confirmed the training of Nigerian troops by the US on counter insurgency, however denied reports that hundreds of those who left the country for the training had returned.

He said the Nigerian Army had been sending troops for training in foreign countries in consonance with existing agreements, which according to him, was normal.

He said, "Let me make it clear that no 300 soldiers left this country for training. No, it is also not correct to say that 100 soldiers have returned from the training. All these are wrong quotes.

"These are speculations, we have been doing trainings right from time to time and if there is a review, somebody cannot say that several battalions have been sent out for training.

"Battalions are not sent out. We have training agreements with other countries; it is done everywhere and it is normal."

The sources however said the Army boss would not be willing to confirm the figure because it would be tantamount to leaking intelligence.

Isah added that the current moves being made by the Army were not only because of the Boko Haram activities but as a result of the approved Order of Battle of the service, which had created opportunity for the Army to expand.

He said the Nigerian Army already had some of the units that were being strengthened now such as the anti-Terrorism Unit in Jaji, Kaduna State, the Special Warfare unit, the Mountain Warfare Unit, the Composite Counter Terrorism Unit of the 82 Division of the NA in Enugu.

He said what the Army did was to strengthen some of the existing units in consonance with the approved Order of Battle.

Isah also said the information gathering methodology of the Nigerian Army had been reviewed and was already yielding productive results.

"The methodology of our intelligence gathering has been reviewed and we are making breakthroughs already.

"Nigerians are more than ever before willing to give information to security agencies; we encourage them to do more," he said.

In addition to the capacity building programmes for army personnel in the challenge to tackle emergent insurgency in the society, the Nigerian Army has also received the first set of war dog trainers in the country.

Isah, who confirmed the arrival of the trained personnel on war dog handling, did not disclose the number of personnel that went for the course in the US.

Our correspondents however gathered that 12 Nigerian Army experts in dog handling, who were trained in the US, have started the War-Dog Section at the headquarters of the Military Police in Abuja.

The pioneer trainees are expected to train other personnel of the Army. The dog section is strategically established to support the military Police and the Nigerian Army Engineering Anti-Bomb unit.

The source added that the Nigerian Army authorities had concluded arrangements to send more troops for training in the handling of the crucial dogs.

Isah said, "The Chief of Army Staff has made it known to all those who want to know about the dog section. The Chief said some people were to be trained in the US and I can say now that the initial group went and came back.

"It will support military police and the Nigerian Army Engineering Bomb Disposal Unit; they have done their refresher training and they are back."

Also, in a bid to combat the Boko Haram threat, all operational policemen are to undergo a mandatory training on counter-terrorism.

Already, no fewer than 6,000 officers have graduated from the counter-terrorism training conducted by Israeli anti-terrorism specialists in Israel and at the Anti-terrorism and Insurgency Centre of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry in Jaji, Kaduna State, as well as in military facilities in Lagos, Makurdi and Port Harcourt.

Additional 100 dog handlers with specially trained sniffer dogs have also been deployed in Jos, Plateau State and Abuja.

The Isreali instructors have also trained 105 policemen, who would train their colleagues under a ‘train-the -trainer programme’ funded by the Nigeria Police Force.

The programme, which commenced in January, 2011, also involved the procurement of sophisticated crime-fighting gadgets for the force, including Armoured Personnel Carriers some of which have been deployed for random patrols, especially in the Federal Capital Territory.

The Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Yemi Ajayi, confirmed that all operational police officers would be trained in counter-terrorism to strengthen the force capabilities to contain terrorism threats.

He however said the training had nothing to do with the Boko Haram attacks, insisting that the training was part of the police reform agenda meant to reposition the force to cope with the challenges of the 21st century.

Ajayi said, "The counter-terrorism training commenced in January this year and about 6,000 policemen have graduated from the programme so far. We have also trained 105 trainers in Israel who will train others at various local facilities

"We have 100 trained dog handlers with specially sniffer dogs on undercover operations and many more would be trained in the course of the programme which will fully equip our men to manage any security crisis."

Meanwhile, a few days after the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram, relocated its operational headquarters from Maiduguri, Borno State to Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, the Federal Government has uncovered plans by the sect to attack more states.

A reliable FG source told our correspondent that the states in the North-East- Gombe, Adamawa, Bauchi and Plateau were the new targets of the dreaded sect.

According to him, the states are more vulnerable to attacks by the sect because members of the Boko Haram have spread their tentacles to those areas.

He said the Yobe attack indicated that the fundamentalist sect had settled in the state a long time before they struck

He said, "Everything about the Yobe attack showed that it was a planned job. They divided themselves into groups and were attacking FG establishments with precision. That tells us a lot. While we were concentrating on Maiduguri, they were silently moving to Yobe and you saw the havoc they wrecked there.

"Now, we have it on good authority that they have moved to Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Plateau. In fact, they are there already. They have members of their sects in all these states and they may likely attack there."

The Associated Press had last week quoted a Boko Haram spokesperson, Abul-Qaqa, as saying, "More attacks are on the way. We will continue attacking Federal Government formations until security forces stop their excesses on our members and vulnerable civilians."

However, a source close to his family told the Nigerian Tribune that he spoke with Babangida by phone on his sick bed in Germany at about 4.10 p.m. (Nigerian time) on Thursday and that there was no cause for anxiety over his health.

All efforts to get through to his media aide, Mr Kassim Afegbua, were unsuccessful, as he neither responded to calls nor to the text message sent to him.

PoliticsUs: Bomb Attacks Possible In Nigeria Capital by White007(op): 8:31pm On Nov 06, 2011
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — A radical Muslim sect responsible for attacks that left more than 100 people dead in northeast Nigeria this week could bomb three luxury hotels frequented by foreigners in the oil-rich nation's capital, the U.S. Embassy warned Sunday.

The unusually specific warning from U.S. diplomats identified possible targets of the sect known locally as Boko Haram as the Hilton, Nicon Luxury and Sheraton hotels. Those hotels draw diplomats, politicians and Nigeria's business elite daily in the country's central capital of Abuja.
The embassy said the attack may come as Nigeria celebrates the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha and that its diplomats and staff had been instructed to avoid those hotels.

Deb MacLean, an embassy spokeswoman, declined to offer further details about the threat or the source of the information Sunday.

The warning came as a Nigerian Red Cross official said Sunday that more than 100 died in a series of attacks in northeast Nigeria launched by the radical Muslim sect, as sect gunmen shot and killed another police officer.

Ibrahim Bulama told The Associated Press he expected the number of dead to rise as local clinics and hospitals tabulate the casualty figures from the attacks Friday in Damaturu, the capital of rural Yobe state.

While the hard-hit city remained calm and its Muslim inhabitants celebrated a religious holiday Sunday, army and police units manned roadblocks leading into the town and streets remained largely quiet, Bulama said.

Meanwhile, the sect known locally as Boko Haram killed a police inspector Sunday in the city of Maiduguri, the sect's spiritual home about 80 miles (130 kilometers) east of Damaturu. Sect gunmen stopped the officer's car at gunpoint as he neared a mosque to pray with his family, local police commissioner Simeon Midenda said.

Gunmen ordered the family away, then shot the inspector to death, Midenda said. The sect members later allowed his family to drive the car away, he said.
The killing prompted a frank acknowledgment from the police commander, whose men remain under siege from constant assassinations by the radical sect.
"Our men who live in the midst of the Boko Haram are not safe," Midenda said.

Statements issued late Saturday show the U.N. Security Council called the attacks Friday in the cities of Damaturu and Maiduguri "criminal and unjustifiable" and asked members to help Nigerian authorities bring those responsible to justice.

A statement on behalf of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for "an end to all violence in the area," while offering sympathy for the victims.
Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday appealed for an end to all violence, saying it only increases problems, sowing hatred and division even among the faithful. He told tourists in St. Peter's Square that he is following with apprehension the news from Nigeria.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the attacks Friday, which included suicide bombings and shootings.

Boko Haram wants to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, an oil-rich nation of more than 160 million which has a predominantly Christian south and a Muslim north. Its name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, but instead of schooling, it rejects Western ideals like Nigeria's U.S.-styled democracy that followers believe have destroyed the country with corrupt politicians.

Boko Haram's attacks occurred ahead of Sunday's celebration, or the feast of sacrifice, when Muslims around the world slaughter sheep and cattle in remembrance of Abraham's near-sacrifice of his son. Police elsewhere in the country had warned of violence ahead of the celebration in Nigeria.

An Associated Press count shows the group has killed at least 361 people this year alone.

Kim Kardashian Speaks Out On Her Failed Marriage: "I Got Caught Up With the Hoopla"

One day after she filed for divorce from Kris Humphries, her husband of 72 days, and left the country on a business trip, Kim Kardashian is making sure she tells her side of the story.

“I am trying not to read all the different media reports but it’s hard not to see all the negative ones,” Kardashian tweeted on Tuesday. “First and foremost, I married for love. I can’t believe I even have to defend this. I would not have spent so much time on something just for a TV show!”
She says that sharing the wedding with fans on E!’s two part wedding special in early October is just part of who she is and how the Kardashian family chooses to conduct their lives.

“We filmed Kourtney giving birth, Khloe getting married, break ups, make ups, our best moments and our worst moments,” she writes. “These were all real moments. That’s what makes us who we are. We share, we give, we love and we are open!”
She then goes on to describe the “rollercoaster” she was on as the wedding approached and expresses regret for not ending the relationship sooner.
“I got caught up with the hoopla and the filming of the TV show that when I probably should have ended my relationship, I didn’t know how to,” she reveals. “And didn’t want to disappoint a lot of people.”

Kardashian then ends her statement by saying that reports that she made millions off of her wedding are “simpy not true” and announced that she will be donating the money from her wedding gifts to the Dream Foundation.

Why is she giving away money and gifts that OTHERS gave her to a charity? Those should be returned to the people that gave them and then she can donate her OWN money. Of course she wouldn't do that though. Better that she gives somebody else's money away instead of her own.
Foreign AffairsFeds Pressure African Dictator's Son To Surrender Ferrari, M. J. Glove. by White007(op): 9:55am On Oct 27, 2011
The U.S. government may soon own one of Michael Jackson's white gloves, a $530,000 Ferrari and a $30 million Malibu estate if it succeeds in seizing them from the son of a corrupt African dictator.

In a case kept hidden from public view until last week, the U.S. Department of Justice says it's pursuing more than $32 million in assets from Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, whose father Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has ruled over oil-rich Equatorial Guinea for 32 years -- and has been accused by authorities around the world of illicitly siphoning hundreds of millions of dollars for himself and his family.

A 2010 U.S. Senate report detailed how Obiang the younger, known as Teodorin, had moved $110 million into the United States through shell companies and anonymous transactions, propping up a hard-partying lifestyle that included spending $30 million on one of Malibu's largest mansions and a $38.5 million Gulfstream V jet. Obiang was also known to collect supercars like they were Hot Wheels, with at least 32 cars and motorcycles at one point, including eight Ferraris, two Bugatti Veyrons and a $2 million Maserati.

While the U.S. Department of Justice has said a probe into Obiang had been ongoing since 2004, the first signs of legal trouble for Obiang came from France, where authorities seized 11 of his cars last month, including the $2 million Maserati MC-12. While the Justice Department had sought seven cars from Obiang in California, its latest request mentions only one -- a 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO.

The documents unsealed last week in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles offer the first glimpse of the case built by the Justice against Obiang, accusing him of spending more than $100 million garnered from extortion and embezzlement in Equatorial Guinea. The feds also revealed how Obiang bought $3.2 million worth of memorabilia from Michael Jackson's estate earlier this year, including the white crystal-studded glove Jackson wore on the "Bad" tour, the MTV Music Video Award for "We Are The World" and several of the life-size figurines Jackson used to keep at his Neverland Ranch.

So far, no representatives of Obiang's has officially responded to the government's bid, and the Justice Department has not yet responded to a request for comment from Yahoo! Autos. Human Rights Watch, an advocacy group long critical of inaction against the Obiang family, has called on the United States and other countries to move against the clan despite their control over a key oil supply.

“The move to freeze Teodorín’s assets in the U.S. is overdue,” said Arvind Ganesan, business and human rights director at Human Rights Watch, in a statement. “But the real test will be if the U.S. government vigorously pursues the inquiry to its conclusion without letting diplomatic or business ties stand in the way.”

Foreign AffairsGaddafi Is Gone; What Are Africans Mourning? Analysis by White007(op): 10:15pm On Oct 25, 2011
Many news reports liked to refer to the late Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi as "the maverick leader." That obviously was some conscious editorial decision on the part of the media houses to be more diplomatic than would be the case if they used apt words, for instance: the stark raving lunatic of Tripoli.

Gaddafi's behaviour, especially in the later years of his rule, wasn't that of a sane person. Far from it. And that fact became obvious for anyone who came in touch with him. The foreign affairs minister of Kenya Moses Wetangula for example, in a recent interview on the BBC told of his astonishment - and that of a number of other dignitaries at an African Union meet - when Gaddafi slapped his foreign affairs minister, Abdelati Obeid accrss the face in full view of everyone.

Reports of the man's eccentricities are many. There was the all female guard of voluptuous brunettes who went everywhere with "the guide of the Libyan Revolution." There were the camels they transported everywhere the guide went, to provide him the favourite ingredient of his breakfast - fresh camel milk. There were the numerous headaches he gave his hosts, with his insistence on pitching a tent in the middle of whatever city he visited, preferably in the main square; the man even tried to pitch a tent in a New York City square a year ago during the annual UN General Assembly.

Gaddafi was as disruptive as he was eccentric. I was a journalist in South Africa in 2002 and I remember news reports the week the African Union was inaugurated to take the place of the defunct OAU. That was to take place in the South African coastal city of Durban. Every other head of state observed the normal protocols: bringing in pre-agreed upon numbers of members of their entourages; proscribed numbers of personal bodyguards with agreed-upon amounts of small weapons, and so on. Well, Gaddafi wouldn't have been Gaddafi if he instead didn't see an opportunity to display a sample of the firepower at his command. Six Boeing jumbo jets flew into Durban from Tripoli, positively bristling with machine guns, SMGs, assault rifles, RPGs, , as well as several members of the Libyan military.

It was a nightmare for the South African hosts. They were not about to allow someone to unload six jumbo jets full of weapons and fighting men and women on their soil of course. What ensued was a wild brawl at the airport between members of the South African army and the Libyans, with the former prevailing, confining the Libyans in their planes and compelling them to fly back. But that was not the end of the drama. Out in the Indian Ocean, a ship was bringing Gaddafi to the city, and it was laden with, AK 47 rifles and other assault weapons, rocket launchers, grenades, name it. And it also was carrying the food of the guide and his entourage, comprising of hundreds of frozen goat carcasses, among other delicacies on board, according to newspaper reports that interviewed port officials and other eye witnesses. The ship also presumably carried Gaddafi's camel and tent, not to mention trunk loads of U.S. dollars, because later Gaddafi's people were to cause a stampede in one of Durban's poorer neighbourhood when the Guide, in one of his capricious fits of magnanimity, decided to dispense hundred dollar bills to anyone who dropped nearby his caravan.

Gaddafi's oil dollars at work

The man was a raving lunatic. What fevered state of mind caused him to imagine he could bring what amounted to a military invasion force to another country? We were to learn that the intention was to take over the security arrangements for all the visiting African heads of state. He apparently never talked it over with his host Thabo Mbeki, but went ahead and attempted to deploy his military in South Africa anyway. That was Gaddafi for you, a madman who acted any way he liked because he was the head of state of an oil-gushing country whose earnings he treated as his personal piggy bank, with the spending habits of a drunken sailor.

How could this fellow ever be taken seriously? Because he put a lot of those oil dollars in the pockets of many of the world's movers and shakers. Some news reports in Europe have intimated that French President Nicolas Sarkozy (before he was president) is only one of the numerous European officials to have taken Gaddafi's money. When it came to Sub-Saharan Africa, with just a few exceptions, almost every one of the leaders was in his pockets. Some of them almost were like servants to Gaddafi, always doing his bidding in international affairs, like electing him to the UN's Human Rights Council.

Over time, the oil wealth must have done something to develop a god complex in the leader of the great Arab Jamahiriya. When one of his sons - the playboy Hannibal whose violent tendencies included domestic abuse - together with his wife beat up a maid in a Swiss hotel, police arrested the couple and locked them up for two days. Muammar al Gaddafi reacted with the petulance and rage of one who believes he owns the world, which, coupled with his wealth - i.e. the wealth of Libya which was the same as his personally - could have devastating results for those he directed his rage at. In this case the Swiss took it on the chin, even though very few even knew who Hannibal Gaddafi was, or what he had done. President Gaddafi first shut down the Libyan subsidiaries of Swiss companies Nestlé and ABB. Then he had two Swiss businessmen in Tripoli arrested for alleged visa irregularities. After that he had most commercial flights between Libya and Switzerland cancelled. He would show these rats! Who did they think they were, daring to arrest his son; did they not know he was entitled to doing absolutely anything he felt like, including battering the nationals of other people on their soil? Gaddafi was not done with the Swiss, far from it. He next withdrew up to US$ 5 billion from Swiss banks. Then he called for the dissolution of Switzerland and that its territory be divided between France, Italy and Germany. He squeezed until the Swiss cried uncle, apologizing profusely to Libya and saying they hoped "the misunderstanding" would never be repeated. By then of course they had long released Hannibal who was back in Tripoli, saying if he had nuclear weapons he would wipe Switzerland off the map. Such was the world of the Gaddafis.

By the time of his death last week at the hands of enraged captors, Gaddafi had long lost any last vestiges of rational thought his skull may ever have contained. The rebels had closed in on the man who took power in a coup in 1969, but he still was under the illusion that the Libyan population loved him and would fight to "to the last man", to re-install him. Even at the last moment, when they found him in a drain pipe in his hometown of Sirte, he imagined he still was the ruler, and began to scold them for arresting him. Which is the time they began assaulting him, beating him up and shooting him, bringing a violent end to the life of a violent man, who among other favourite activities liked to plan terrorist attacks on the West, as well as on other people he did not like, anywhere.

What is Gaddafi's legacy in Africa? Last week, news reports were talking of many people all over Sub Sahara mourning his fall (Sub Sahara, mark you, not the Arab north which was busy rejoicing the demise of an insufferable tyrant). This leaves one wondering about the thought processes of the average man and woman of these black African countries. What exactly are they mourning? The fellow who was one of the main sponsors of Idi Amin? Are they mourning the character who gave lots of money to rebels in Sierra Leone whose main modus operandi was amputating limbs or cutting off the noses, lips, ears or other body parts of any poor person unlucky enough to fall in their hands? Are these Africans mourning the ruthless tyrant who deployed fighter jets to begin bombing his own people in a bid to cling onto power when the people rose up to demand an end to his four-decade rule?

Obviously, the mourners will tell you Gaddafi was a generous man who built mosques and roads and other infrastructure projects all over the continent and gave away lots of money whenever and wherever he visited. Great. Just great! So, according to this reasoning, for his money Gaddafi had carte blanche to commit every atrocity he could think of, or to be bosom buddies with most of the continent's butchers (which he himself was anyway)?

When you look at the reaction of most in Africa earlier this year when the effort to topple Gaddafi and his regime began (a good number interviewed in media reports were unhappy about it), and after the man's demise, you see more reason to despair for this continent.

PoliticsBayelsa Policemen Kill 20-year-old For Criticising Bribery At Checkpoint. pics by White007(op): 9:29pm On Oct 24, 2011
Forlorn and depressed, Mrs. Grace Victor stared at the sky. The woman, who hails from Rivers State, has yet to come to term with the reality that the killing of her son, Mr. Victor Emmanuel, on Sunday by some trigger-happy policemen is not a scene from a tragic film.

She said witnessing how her son was ruthlessly murdered and her inability to protect him was a traumatic experience that would live with her for the rest of her life.

Grace was pained that despite trying to stop the policemen at one of the checkpoints along Sanni Abacha Expressway, Yenagoa, from slaying her son, they still went ahead to riddle Emmanuel’s body with bullets.

"I saw them shoot my son; no mercy at all, they shot him brutally. As he fell while they were shooting him, the tallest of them still continued shooting him on the ground," she said.

She told PUNCH METRO that her son was killed on Sunday on her way back from church. She said Emmanuel died with a copy of the Holy Bible on his hand.

"My son went to church with me. After the close of church, I came out and boarded a commercial motorcycle and, not far from where I took off, I heard gunshots. I was scared and told the motorcycle operator to stop for us to take cover.

"All of a sudden I saw my son running and being chased by the police. Police vans were parked on both sides of the road. And, when I discovered that it was my son they were chasing and about shooting, I ran towards one of the policemen close to one of the vans.

"I told him the person they were chasing was my son. I told him he was a Christian and that he just came out of the church. By this time they were cocking their guns. By the time the policeman I approached signalled his colleagues to stop, they were already shooting at my son.

"My son was holding a Bible when he was shot. I rushed, as a mother, to go and attend to him but they threatened that if I didn’t move back they would shoot me too. They made me move back. I did not see any of the policemen with any stain of blood then. But they just picked his Bible and drove off. It was another police vehicle that came and picked him."

What could have moved the police to commit such dastardly act? PUNCH METRO gathered from sources at the scene that the late Emmanuel was displeased at the way the police were allegedly harassing and extorting money from commercial motorcyclists. He was said to have made a demeaning statement that infuriated the policemen.

Particularly, Emmanuel had reportedly condemned the attitude of the policemen, saying they only exercised their power on helpless motorcyclists and wondered why they even chose Sunday to extort money from people.

Sources said it was the statement that made the angry policemen to chase and kill him. But the police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Egoavoen Emokpai, said the police had commenced investigations on the killing.

However, the Civil Liberties Organisation has condemned the brutal killing, saying there was no justification in extra-judicial murder. The state Secretary, CLO, Mr. Morris Alagoa, asked the Inspector-General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, to call policemen attached to the state command to order, adding that the killing of Emmanuel was one death too many.

He said, "No matter what happened, even though the police statement is saying the boy was smoking hemp and even tried to fight them when they challenged him, can a 25-year old young man overpower all those policemen that chased him? Was it proper to shoot at an unarmed Nigerian? Have the police the right to pass judgment and also sentence to death?

"The CLO is calling on the Commissioner of Police in the state to, as a matter of urgency, institute an investigation team to dig into this matter and take disciplinary action against the policemen who carried out this dastardly act of killing a Nigerian with impunity. Law- abiding Nigerians cannot continue to see themselves being killed by the very policemen meant to safe guard their security.

"We want these extra-judicial killings to stop and, perpetrators made to face the law of the land. In this wise, the CLO is calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to rise up, not only condemn the negative act, but to assist in fighting for justice. The IG should call his men in Bayelsa State to order and ensure that those found culpable are punished without delay."

@poster, I spoke to your mom. I asked her that now she has had a chance to see what kind of a man you turned out to be, would she have re-considered and aborted you? She told me,"Hell YES!, I personally would have sucked him out with his Daddy's shop Vac and tossed his carcass on the floor for the stray cats to eat." Looks like you are a big time loser cupcake. Do us all a favor and consider ending your miserable life. You are taking up valuable resources.

Samsung Galaxy S

The original Samsung Galaxy series includes the Fascinate on Verizon, the Epic on Sprint, the Captivate on AT&T and the Vibrant on T-Mobile. These Android phones were released last year and boasted vibrant displays and plenty of horsepower. Trouble is, they are completely superseded now by the bigger and better Samsung Galaxy S II and upcoming Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The already available S II ups the ante with its higher-definition screen, dual-core processor, more RAM and a better camera. It’s a device that will hold up a lot better over a two-year contract, and will likely continue to receive upcoming Android software updates, which the original Galaxy S may not. While original Galaxy smartphones can be purchased quite cheaply, and still perform competently, for a few extra bucks it is worth investing in a device with a brighter future.

HTC EVO 4G

As the first 4G smartphone on the nation’s first 4G network, Sprint subscribers with a need for speed couldn’t pick up an HTC EVO fast enough when it became available last year. This is still a respectable device and offers good value for the money with its big 4.3-inch screen and WiMax capabilities. However, for Sprint subscribers who want an Android phone, there are newer and better options today. The EVO 3D boasts similar specs, but offers more than just a 3D camera. Upgrades for the EVO 3D include a dual-core processor, better screen resolution and a bigger battery. The phone is also less bulky. The recently announced HTC EVO Design, smaller and less powerful than the original EVO 4G, offers dual bands which is great for international travel.

Palm Pre 2

Many of us who owned handheld comptuers before smartphones have a soft spot for Palm, a pioneer in personal data assistant revolution. In recent years, Palm loyalists could still look forward to new devices put out by HP that ran on the underrated WebOS mobile operating software. Today, you can pick up a trusty Pre 2 for $149.99 with a new two-year Verizon contract. However, don’t expect to get much out of the Pre 2 aside from a nice nostalgic effect. This past summer, HP announced that it was getting out of the mobile operating software business completely and that it would longer be releasing new smartphones. Support for webOS might not be forthcoming in the future, so if you run into software problems with the Pre 2 or any Palm device, you may have a hard time fixing them.

Motorola Titanium

The Titanium was already outdated by the time it was released in June. Motorola curiously shipped the Titanium with the older Android 2.1 software (codename Eclair). This was two generations of software behind what was available for Android phones at the time. This means that many new apps and games available for other Android phones could not be downloaded to the Titanium. The Titanium’s elegant and sturdy hardware and novel ‘push to talk’ walkie-talkie capabilities do not make up for its internal deficiencies.

HTC Surround

This smartphone runs on AT&T and uses Windows Phone 7 as its operating system. The HTC Surround has been touted for its impressive audio qualities with Dolby surround sound and pop-up speakers (instead of a slide-out keyboard, little speakers emerge instead). Trouble is, it’s a little thick and heavy. While its interesting audio capabilities are nice selling points, it doesn’t excel in other areas. For starters, there are numerous complaints about the device not syncing with non-Exchange Microsoft Outlook accounts. What’s the point of having a Microsoft phone without reliable Outlook access? If you need a Windows Phone 7 device, there are certainly better options available like the Samsung Focus.

There is no better time than now to purchase a smartphone. Apple’s iPhone 4S and the soon-to-be released Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Motorola RAZR are setting new standards in smartphone functionality, reliability and design.

In fact, these top-of-the-line devices are setting a higher bar for everyone else in the cellular industry. Top-selling smartphones and one-time household names are increasingly becoming obsolete. And while less advanced and older-model phones will no doubt be discounted to compete, you will still end up paying in the long run. You will likely spend spend several hundred dollars to use your phone over the course of a two-year contract. So you’re better off ponying up more at the time of purchase to get the best possible device.

With that in mind, you should think twice before purchasing these popular smartphones.

Motorola Droid X2

This is not a terrible phone by any means, and when released last May was viewed as one of the best phones to run on Google’s Android operating system. But with the new and improved RAZR on the horizon, and already-released Motorola devices like the Droid Bionic, Droid 3, and Atrix 2 available, the Droid X2 is starting to look a little long in the tooth. To its credit, the Droid X2 does rock a dual-core processor, which makes surfing the web super-fast. Yet this capability is becoming standard among top-of-the-line smartphones including the iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy Nexus (dubbed the Nexus Prime), and the Motorola RAZR. Further, the Droid X2 doesn’t offer 4G/LTE capabilities, and was plagued with issues when Android released a software update earlier this year.

BlackBerry Curve 9350/9360/9370

While BlackBerry Curve model smartphones are — like the ads say — slim and stylish, they aren’t exactly “easy to use.” Being slim is actually a detriment to these newer Curve models, which were released earlier this month after an initial delay. Both the BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Torch models offer far more screen real-estate to make your smartphone experience a little bit smoother. The Curve is also plagued by poor battery life, which for many BlackBerry addicts is a deal-breaker. BlackBerry creator Research in Motion, which also a few short years ago was the most respected smartphone manufacturer in the world, is having even bigger issues. The company recently suffered a huge outage that cut service for approximately 70 million users around the world. While this may have been a one-off incident, worries about the network’s durability are likely to prevail for some time.

Crime'i Saw My Parents Kill Me In A Dream, So I Decided To Kill Them First. See Pics by White007(op): 8:32pm On Oct 16, 2011
COULD it have been the fear of his dream translating to reality that made 19-year-old Mohammed Muibi take the decision to terminate the lives of his parents? Or was it another phase of the criminal tendencies that he had previously exhibited in two robbery outings? These are the posers the operatives of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit, Oyo, led by the Officer-in-Charge, DSP Olusola Aremu , are trying to unravel as they continue investigations into the boy's action of shooting his father and stabbing his mother.

According to Sunday Tribune sources, the suspect's father, Alhaji Babalola Muibi, was in his sitting room in the night of Sunday, September 11, 2011 in his house at Owode area of Ogbomoso, Oyo State, when his son, Mohammed, stormed in.

Before the elderly man could blink his eyes, a loud shot rang out of the pump action rifle the boy pointed at him. While crying out in pain as the shot got him in the leg, other members of the house heard the sound and Mohammed's mother ran out of the room to see what was happening, only to see her son holding a gun and her husband bleeding profusely from the gunshot injury on his leg.

Screaming, the woman launched towards her son to collect the gun from him, thinking he would respect her as his mother. To her utmost shock, Mohammed aimed the gun at her, pulled the trigger and ran out without waiting to see the outcome of his action. Immediately he left the house, he went to a nearby school and buried the gun he used.

The following day, the suspect reportedly went back to his father's house for an appraisal of his action the previous day, ready for another action in the event that anyone tried to act funny. Again, it was his mother who sighted him and as soon as she did, she held on to him, trying to prevent him from escaping the second time, but again, Mohammed was ready for his mother. He drew a dagger he had hidden under his shirt and stabbed her in the lower abdomen by the hip. He ran out immediately.

He was said to have left for his father's second house at Water area of Ogbomoso and was sleeping when his cousins gripped him and handed him over to the police at Owode Division where Oyo SARS operatives were on ground and his case was later transferred to SARS Oyo for further investigations.

Reports also had it that before the attack on his parents, the suspect had been involved in robbery twice and had also diverted for his personal use, a sum of N50,000 which his father gave him to deposit in a bank. Infuriated by his son's action, Alhaji Muibi had reportedly siezed the electronic gadgets in Mohammed's room, which he believed were bought with his money and had told the boy that he would only return the siezed gadgets after his son must have returned his money.

Unperturbed by his father's action, the suspect had gone to one his friends and asked him to follow him to his dad to claim ownership of the electronic gadgets. When they got to Mohammed's parents' house, he and his friend met his mother and the woman was reported to have angrily sent her son's friend away, warning him not to get involved in what was not his business. What followed this was Mohammed's shocking action.

Speaking with Sunday Tribune at SARS unit in Oyo, Mohammed, who said he was born on December 24, 1992, stated that his action was as a result of the dream he had in which he saw himself killed by his parents. Taking Sunday Tribune down the memory lane to give an insight into his background, the suspect said: "My mother is the first wife of my father and I am the fourth of her seven children. My father has two other wives but they are not staying with my dad, only my mother lives with my father. My father is a transporter and he owns articulated vehicles which are used in conveying goods. I attended Mego Baptist College, Ogbomoso and passed out in 2009. I went to computer training school to acquire skill in computer science.

"I started robbing in 2010 with a friend of mine. We went to a house and stole N300 and a handset. The second time, both of us went to Ogbomoso-Ilorin expressway at about 10p.m. and robbed the passengers of a commercial space bus. We did not use any weapon but broke bottles on the ground to scare them and we succeeded in collecting N8,000 from them. I also started smoking marijuana last year but kept it from my parents.

"It is true that I diverted my father's N50,000. He gave me the money to go and deposit in an account which I didn't do. I used the money to buy home theatre which I used to furnish my room. I also used part of the money to buy jeans, marijuana and beer while the rest was used in paying prostitutes for sex. I actually started sleeping with prostitutes while I was still in secondary school.

" Before shooting my dad, I had a dream in which I saw my parents kill me by strangulating me. I then thought that instead of waiting for that to happen to me, I should kill them first. I went to the ceiling of our house to pick my father's pump action rifle. I knew he had a gun because he had one day given me his gun licence to go and do a photocopy for him but I didn't know where he kept it.

"One day, I went to the ceiling of our house when there was an electrical fault and I saw the gun where my father hid it in the space between the ceiling and the roof. So, after I had the dream, I went to pick the gun and headed for my father's sitting room where he was sitting. I had never handled a gun before but knew how to operate it through the films I had watched.

"I got to the sitting room and shot him on the leg. When my mother heard the sound of the shot, she came out of the room and rushed at me to collect the gun from me. I aimed her, pulled the trigger and ran out with the gun. I moved to a school close to our house, dug the ground and buried the gun. The following day, I went back home but as soon as my mother saw me, she held on to me and said she would not allow me to leave as I had shot my father.

"In order to loosen her grip on me, I brought out a dagger on me, stabbed her once and ran out again. I left for my father's second house at Water area, Ogbomoso and was sleeping in the mosque of the house when my cousins came to apprehend me, after which they called in the police".

When asked whether his parents offended him or were not playing their parental roles concerning him, Mohammed replied in the negative, saying his mother used to prepare food for him while his father was giving him money regularly for his upkeep, and it was from the money he was buying wears for himself. "It was the dream I had that made me take the action", he repeated.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, while confirming the story, told Sunday Tribune that at the completion of investigations, the suspect would be charged to court for conspiracy, robbery, attempted murder and assault occasioning harm.
