timmy2409: The Three Jesus Christs of Ypsilanti

http://www.damninteresting.com/three-thrown-over-the-cuckoos-nest/

This is not religious per se. Just thought it was a really interesting read about mental health and delusions.
DI has returned? I thought they folded. Have your read about the (in)famous John Frum? Recommended to anyone who hasn't.

The bananapocalypse is also mildly apropos, considering a(n) (in)famous pastor, and one of olaa's heroes, once used bananas as an example of evidence for intelligent design.

Random; speaking of Ypsilanti, this song is arguably my favorite of all time. It's like wow...how beautiful... Then I realized he was talking about Jesus.....

bleeping troll

Still listen to it almost daily though, I just ignore the silly jesus bits and concentrate on the overall message of selflessness, love etc..

Good point. In which case an alternative explanation would be they do not realize they are supposed to troll there. ie, even including the ones that have actually been to the site. He gets more famous, like say Harris, then it might become tiresome due to their sheer numbers and the laws of probabilities.

Dawkins does enjoy his hate mail though. There even used to be a page on his site dedicated to these, just as pastafarians keep one, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

On another note, imo olaa is not stoopid. His is the sort that provokes disgust in me the most probably. The educated one that is still bat $hit insane, shouting LALALALALALALA regardless of the damage, usually for the most selfish reasons imaginable. Sure we all have our selfish reasons, but these dudes.....

Quite long but worth reading.
http://www.samharris.org/blog/item/why-dont-i-criticize-israel
One can disagree with him, and the default is for most to disagree with him on some issue or the other (for instance I do on morality for starters), but one can never claim he does not make (sometimes ridiculously) good points.

He should allow comments on his blog. That would be very juicy

Bleep the trolls. His friend Jerry Coyne manages to survive with them, as well as address the critics with more honest intentions. Very few trolls even make it there anyways as most of what is written there is beyond them. Then again, he's not as famous or controversial as Harris

rationalmind: The immediate question that comes to mind is how same brain chemicals in one makes him have the propensity to bite and in another makes him detest biting.
Identical twins share DNA and guess what? They have different fingerprints. Similar to each others, yes, especially when compared to other people's, but nevertheless still clearly different.

These and other subtle differences begin to appear right from when those fetuses are in the womb; they are born with different fingerprints etc. One may receive more of nutrient x and therefore develop trait y more so than his twin. They may be twins but they go through different experiences.

So to answer your question; the environment.

On a related note, that's why we humans strive to ensure the best possible environment is available to nudge one into making the 'right' choice. For example, prisons aren't useful to many (sane) folk for punitive reasons; they are primarily necessary as means to build and environment which would make others think twice before committing a crime, ie, prevent future crimes. And of course, though often a failure in this regard, they attempt to rehabilitate, to 'better' the inmate (this made more difficult because prison isn't supposed to be a holiday, else people would be committing crimes just to get in! And 'rough' treatment does not typically produce the best results). That's what's it's about; building a safe environment, safer society

And back to the main issue, let's not forget you're talking about brains here, very likely a chaotic system. Which makes them, like the weather, completely unpredictable. Not even a theoretical perfect computer could make accurate predictions. The slightest change between a chemical in twin A from twin B could lead to drastically different results. We still don't know how the brain works so that's not a definite (but very, very likely). And if QM weirdness is indeed correct, compounding on this already chaotic systems? Well, I hope you can see the implications.

Doesn't mean twins won't usually be rather similar overall a lot of the time, but like their fingerprints they would ultimately be different. Always

And I just wasted time I don't have...kudos

Oh! Let's go!

Steve walks warily down the street
With the brim pulled way down low.
Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet,
Machine guns ready to go.

Are you ready, hey, are you ready for this?
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat?
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, I'm gonna get you, too
Another one bites the dust

How do you think I'm going to get along
Without you when you're gone?
You took me for everything that I had
And kicked me out on my own

Are you happy, are you satisfied?
How long can you stand the heat?
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat

[Chorus]

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust

There are plenty of ways that you can hurt a man
And bring him to the ground
You can beat him, you can cheat him
You can treat him bad and leave him when he's down

But I'm ready, yes, I'm ready for you
I'm standing on my own two feet
Out of the doorway the bullets rip

Christianity EtcRe: Why "Judgement Day"? by wiegraf: 8:50pm On Jul 24, 2014
I've always wondered about the technical details of this day. they say wait till judgment day, yet they also say they saw Mr x in heaven/hell visions. so which is it, are they seeing the future, alluding to gods omniscience and the mass of illogic that entails or has judgment day already taken place, just on another dimension/plane? (actually this would still introduce omniscience, free will etc problems, as it would mean the future is set and god already knows it....)

or are you guys saying when you have these visions, that you are viewing one of potential futures? even that still introduces silly problems, but I won't dwell on those just yet for a variety of reasons. mainly; it would be a waste of time on people bent on throwing logic through a window

this your stone age story book writers and current day visionaries should have/should think things through. in today's world their stories would make for very poor fantasy/sci fi. plot holes and contradictions everywhere you look.....
Technology MarketRe: Do You Think My Invention Is Viable/would You Buy One? by wiegraf: 5:36pm On Jul 21, 2014
Battery tech is still in the stone age when compared to most other tech, especially in computing. We're not likely going to get much better batteries than what is currently available for some time. So, if the math checks out why not? Are you sure you'll be able to produce enough power with that?

The price though may need some working, especially as rural areas would be primary targets.

If you did come up with a working prototype though, I'm sure many ideas would spring up that could help with that.

Christianity EtcRe: For Intelligent Mind Only. [God Created The Universe Or Universe Created God] by wiegraf:
op I'm no pro, at best I'm a dilletante (even if that ) with these topics but I can tell you that you make a couple of assumptions that are not exactly "fact"

for instance, one of the most hotly debated issues in matters like these is if infinities actually exist in any form whatsoever except for mathematically.

this might seem like a trivial problem, but if you insist space existed forever, then when did the first occurrence of anything whatsoever at all take place. think about the implications of that carefully. every process possible would already have taken place an infinite amount of times, and will again take place an infinite amount of times

similarly if space is infinite, and there only exists a finite amount of ways nature can combine, that would mean that currently there are infinite versions of you right now reading this very post. interesting, no? it would also mean, ie if you combine it with your notion that time is eternal, that an infinite amount of yous have already read this post at some other time and place. in other words, every single thing possible has already place an infinite amount of times.

but let's say all this is as it is, so what? the fact that is incredulous does not mean it is impossible, clearly. thats not how science works, at all. so long as the evidence points in that direction than that is what is happening regardless of opinion. okay then, but qwhat of even simpler notions. for instance, if you claim space is infinite, yet as we all know, it is also expanding, exactly how do you add something to infinity......

let's not even think about what quantum weirdness has to say about all this.

most valid scientific models being explored do not assume spacetime is infinite, for even more reasons than what I post above. for instance, one of the biggest, fastest elephants in the room; entropy. and even cyclical models don't solve these issues. the problems don't go away, there's still the question of when did the first cycle take place?

and of course GOD!!! answers absolutely, completely, comprehensibly, nothing. its an uncouth way of saying ' I don't know, but let us assume the universe was created just for me, therefore; Santa exists!)

tl;Dr; putting it lightly, it complicated. nobody knows, and given certain obvious factors I'll ignore for now; very likely nobody may never know. we can only concern ourselves with things we can determine; our universe. which does have limits

Deep in thought I forgive everyone
As the cluttered streets greet me once again
I know I can't be late, supper's waiting on the table

So I pull my collar up and face the cold, on my own
The earth laughs beneath my heavy feet
At the blasphemy in my old jangly walk
Steeple guide me to my heart and home
The sun is out and up and down again
I know I'll make it, love can last forever
Graceful swans of never topple to the earth
And you can make it last, forever you
You can make it last, forever you
And for a moment I lose myself
Wrapped up in the pleasures of the world
I've journeyed here and there and back again
But in the same old haunts I still find my friends
Mysteries not ready to reveal
Sympathies I'm ready to return
I'll make the effort, love can last forever
Graceful swans of never topple to the earth
Tomorrow's just an excuse
And you can make it last, forever you
You can make it last, forever you

waiter, via guardian:
I was a waitress at Applebee's restaurant in Saint Louis. I was fired Wednesday for posting a picture on Reddit.com of a note a customer left on a bill. I posted it on the web as a light-hearted joke.

This didn't even happen at my table. The note was left for another server, who allowed me to take a picture of it at the end of the night.

Someone had scribbled on the receipt, "I give God 10%. Why do you get 18?"

I assumed the customer's signature was illegible, but I quickly started receiving messages containing Facebook profile links and websites, asking me to confirm the identity of the customer. I refused to confirm any of them, and all were incorrect.

I worked with the Reddit moderators to remove any personal information. I wanted to protect the identity of both my fellow server and the customer. I had no intention of starting a witch-hunt or hurting anyone.

Now I've been fired.

The person who wrote the note came across an article about it, called the Applebee's location, and demanded everyone be fired -- me, the server who allowed me to take the picture, the manager on duty at the time, the manager not on duty at the time, everyone. It seems I was fired not because Applebee's was represented poorly, not because I did anything illegal or against company policy, but because I embarrassed this person.

In light of the situation, I would like to make a statement on behalf of wait staff everywhere: We make $3.50 an hour. Most of my paychecks are less than pocket change because I have to pay taxes on the tips I make.

After sharing my tips with hosts, bussers, and bartenders, I make less than $9 an hour on average, before taxes. I am expected to skip bathroom breaks if we are busy. I go hungry all day if I have several busy tables to work. I am expected to work until 1:30am and then come in again at 10:30am to open the restaurant.

I have worked 12-hour double shifts without a chance to even sit down. I am expected to portray a canned personality that has been found to be least offensive to the greatest amount of people. And I am expected to do all of this, every day, and receive change, or even nothing, in return. After all that, I can be fired for "embarrassing" someone, who directly insults his or her server on religious grounds.

In this economy, $3.50 an hour doesn't cut it. I can't pay half my bills. Like many, I would love to see a reasonable, non-tip-dependent wage system for service workers like they have in other countries. But the system being flawed is not an excuse for not paying for services rendered.

I need tips to pay my bills. All waiters do. We spend an hour or more of our time befriending you, making you laugh, getting to know you, and making your dining experience the best it can be. We work hard. We care. We deserve to be paid for that.

I am trying to stand up for all of us who work for just a few dollars an hour at places like Applebee's. Whether a chain steakhouse or a black-tie establishment, tipping is not optional. It is how we get paid.

I posted a picture to make people laugh, but now I want to make a serious point: Things like this happen to servers all the time. People seem to think that the easiest way to save money on a night out is to skip the tip.

I can't understand why I was fired over this. I was well liked and respected at Applebee's. My sales were high, my managers had no problems with me, and I was even hoping to move up to management soon. When I posted this, I didn't represent Applebee's in a bad light. In fact, I didn't represent them at all.

I did my best to protect the identity of all parties involved. I didn't break any specific guidelines in the company handbook – I checked. But because this person got embarrassed that their selfishness was made public, Applebee's has made it clear that they would rather lose a dedicated employee than an angry customer. That's a policy I can't understand.

I am equally baffled about how a religious tithe is in any way related to paying for services at a restaurant. I can understand why someone could be upset with an automatic gratuity. However, it's a plainly stated Applebee's policy that a tip is added automatically for parties over eight like the one this customer was part of. I cannot control that kind of tip; it's done by the computer that the orders are put into. I've been stiffed on tips before, but this is the first time I've seen the "Big Man" used as reasoning.

Obviously the person who wrote this note wanted it seen by someone. It's strange that now that the audience is wider than just the server, the person is ashamed.

I have no agenda here. I seek no revenge against the note writer. I have no interest in exposing their identity, and, at this point, I'm not even sure I want my job back. I was just trying to make a joke, but I came home unemployed.

I've been waiting tables to save up some money so I could finally go to college, so I could get an education that would qualify me for a job that doesn't force me to sell my personality for pocket change.

While this story has garnered immense media attention, my story is not uncommon. Bad tips and harsh notes are all part of the job. People get fired to keep customers happy every day.

As this story has gotten popular, I've received inquiries as to where people can send money to support me. As a broke kid trying to get into college, it's certainly appealing, but I'd really rather you make a difference to your next server. I'd rather you keep that money and that generosity for the next time you eat out.

That's right, North Korea, who last we checked were not among the 32 participants - but according to the news services North Korean TV, they have beaten Japan 7-0, USA 4-0 and China 2-0 in a glorious group stage.

That's no riposte, you'd feel a bit more if it were. Besides it's too long. All these sensitive xtians sef. You are waiting for a pissed off jew to come carry you off on an intergalactic cruise; fact. That's xtian doctrine. If it doesn't apply to your particular interpretation, that's cool. But that does not stop it from being official xtian doctrine, not at all. And that's what the vast majority of xtians expect.

Anyways, here's my point

you: The last paragraph of your riposte does not seem to be relevant to this topic, or maybe I'm the one who's currently slow. It is well known that Islam-inclined nations did a lot more for science in medieval and ancient times than pagan ones, and Christian ones even impeded development.
The age of enlightenment entails more than just science. Sure, science was the basis, but a lot of 'good' was the critical byproduct. Eg, the information splurge I mention, economics, 'better' ethics etc. Lives have been immeasurably improved since then. And you concede xtianity even impeded that development, so why do you think it plays a critical or positive factor here?

For instance, looking at the site you reccommend, here's the top 30 according to their 'good' ie

Now, looking at the PEW index, below first you have the top 30 countries with the highest ratio of xtian citezens, from Tokelau with 99.8% xtians, to Congo with 95.8 (sellouts, what happened to their ancestors?? If they want to believe in a god couldn't they choose those??)

The second list features those with the highest ratio of unaffiliated. Note, with PEW unaffiliated doesn't equate to atheist/agnostic, they could still very well be theists of some sort (and usually the majority are IIRC), but this is what we have to work it. And they do give their reasons for this somewhere on the site, and it sort of makes sense though you might disagree. For instance, while you call yourself xtian, you just made it clear that yours is a bespoke version, yes? So, you're not necessarily going to agree on say governmental issues with the mainstream xtian/catholics, etc, correct?

Anyways, these are the numbers we have to work with, and they should do. Now, I likely am wrong, my concentration is shot (I start getting high early, and tend to multitask variably, etc etc), but I could not find just one of those countries in the 'good' 30 in the xtian population dominated societies. I'm very sure I'm wrong on that, so please do a recheck.

Whereas with the countries featuring unaffiliated populations, Netherlands, Sweden, France, Spain, UK, Belgium, Spain, Japan, Finland, Luxemborg, Germany. Probably others I missed, do verify if you've got the time as well.

This alone should be enough to bring home my point. I'll add though that you're IMO you're conflating secular humanist ideals with xtianity, and they don't go hand in hand. Like you noted, xtianity did try to impede progress on such fronts (you overstate Islam IMO, certainly not in ancient times, just a few maybe hundred years during mediavel times, and they quickly turned that to absolute $hit eventually, but that's another issue). I also think you're ignoring geopolitics, history etc to a certain extent.

^^This may not be a thorough response (time, abeg), but I hope my position is clearer now?

dunno where you get your data from, but countries like Finland are well known for their lack of concern for religion. well known. using mobile now so can't quote, but I'll be be back and we can compare them with numbers from those with good and proper xtian countries, ice those where well over 90 percent believe any day now some pissed off Jew will return to take his 'benign' sheeple on an intergalactic cruise. since you speak only of xtianity we can ignore truly religious governments, eg our good friends the Islamic states, and focus on xtian majorities

I also think you ignore or muddle up a few things that are essentially cultural, geography etc. some associated with xtianity , true (but not exlusively so mind) , others not. the age of enlightenment was not particularly aided by xtianity; this more or else a fact. thank your god for the xtian Galileo and his peers, mostly European and well influenced, crucially, by the Greek, who stuck to their guns and established the age of reason. we also cannot ignore, of course, inventions like the printing press, the spread of info as a result (look at the a Arab spring and the internet for instance, doesnt even compare in terms of scope or impact ultimately, of course) etc. else we'd still be in truly xtian nations. etc etc
