Under a new law called 'Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2017', passed in Bangladesh this week, parents can now marry off their children who are under 18 years of age under 'special circumstances'.
The new legislation was approved by a voice vote on Monday and gives parents the right to get a court order to allow their children under 18 years marry anyone if it is the best interests of the parents under 'special circumstances'.
According to the new law, there is no minimum age for when these 'special considerations or circumstances' can apply, nor any definition of what "best interests" could mean, but human rights groups are concerned the law could lead to rape victims or impregnated minors being married to their sex abusers.


"Many opportunists may try their luck in between the shortcomings of this law," Nur Khan Liton, a spokesman for the Child Rights Advocacy Coalition in Bangladesh, told CNN.
"It (talks) about parents' consent for the marriage. Where does it speak about the girl's interest?"
Human Rights Watch has criticized new law, calling it a "devastating step that encourages child marriage.", given that Bangladesh has the highest rate of child marriage in Asia.

"The focus now must be on containing the damage caused by Bangladesh legalizing child marriage," said Heather Barr, senior researcher on women's rights at Human Rights Watch.
"Nothing can change the fact that this is a destructive law. But carefully drafted regulations can mitigate some of the harm to girls."

Former Group Managing Director of the National Nigerian Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Andrew Yakubu has dragged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over forfeiture order.

It would be recalled that earlier last week, Justice Zainab Bage Abubakar of the federal high court Kano, while ruling on an ex pate application filed before it by the EFCC’s counsel, ordered that the $9.8 million and 74,000 pounds recovered from Mr. Yakubu be forfeited to the federal government.


Mr. Yakubu was dragged before Justice Zainab by the commission after it recovered $9.8 million and 74,000 pounds from his residence in Kaduna state.

However, Mr. Yakubu has also dragged the commission to another federal high court sitting at Court road, Kano seeking redress on the forfeiture order.

Counsel to the former NNPC boss, Mr. Ahmed Raji, who spoke through Barrister Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude said his client had applied for motion on notice seeking the court to vacate the forfeiture order earlier granted by Justice Zainab.


The EFCC’s spokesperson at the Kano Zonal office, Idris Nadabo, while confirming the development, said the case is coming up on the 7th March, 2017 at the Federal High court sitting at Court road, Kano.

Barely a week after after a former student of Benue State University, Damian Mimidoo, died three weeks after her graduation, tragedy hit the institution again yesterday.

Another student identified as Angela Ochai passed away on Thursday, March 2, few weeks after graduation.



It was gathered that the deceased went out with friends yesterday only to return home stooling and vomiting, Idoma Voice reports.
Ms Ochai was a former contestant of the popular Face of Idoma Beauty Contest and studied English Language.

A maritime reporter, Segun Agbolade, with Sky Ties Newspaper, was killed by a truck at the Trinity area, Apapa, in Lagos state Tuesday March 1st. The reporter was said to have been riding on a motorcycle popularly known as ‘okada’ when a truck knocked him and the Okada rider. He died before he could get medical care. He is survived by a wife and children. May his soul rest in peace Amen.

In the wake of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, a group of Niger Delta militants have threatened to blow up major South African investments in Nigeria such as Multichoice (DSTV), MTN, Shoprite and 16 others if the Federal Government fails to shut them down within one month.

The coalition which consist of militants from Niger Delta Watchdogs, Niger Delta Volunteers and Niger Delta Strike Force, made the threat in a statement released yesterday. The statement in part reads


“Arising from the joint meeting of the Niger Delta Watchdogs, Niger Delta Volunteers and Niger Delta Strike Force held today (Wednesday) in Port Harcourt, we condemn the recent attack on Nigerians in South Africa. We want to state that the recent attack (on Nigerians in South Africa) will mark the end of this nonsense because we will not fold our arms and allow this to continue. We, therefore, call on the Nigerian Government to immediately close down all the businesses owned by South Africans in Nigeria. Failure to close down these companies within one month, we shall mobilise in full force and commence massive attack on the above mentioned South African-owned investments in Nigeria. We shall also make sure that all MTN masts and offices are brought down to naught. We shall strike any property and persons from South Africa within our reach; we will bring down Multichoice (DSTV), Shoprite and others. A leading cleric has justified the exorbitant amount being charged by universities owned by churches in Nigeria.

The Archbishop Emeritus of Lagos, Cardinal Anthony Okogie, has provided reasons why Nigerian universities owned by religious organizations charge higher tuition more than those of public institutions in Nigeria.

The cleric spoke during the second matriculation ceremony of the Augustine University in Ilara, Lagos State. While defending the decision of the religious organizations that own the schools, Okogie explained that the current economic situation in the country created more challenges for private varsities.

He said the charges are in order because the desire of faith-based universities to provide quality education requires a lot of funds.

He said, “Education is not too costly in faith-based institutions. Tell me what is cheap in the country now? Education is not cheap anywhere in the world.”

The guest speaker at the event, Prof. Joseph Omoregbe, noted that partial education was harmful to the individual and the society.

The retired professor of philosophy at the University of Lagos spoke on the topic, “Educating the human person –A conceptual analysis.” He said,

“Education is the development of the three faculties of an individual. They include the intellect, the memory and the will. A holistic education process must aim at developing these three faculties in order to make an individual an educated, m0rally upright person." he added.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Steve Afolami, urged the Federal Government to extend scholarship from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to private and faith-based varsities. This, he said, would be helpful, even if the private institutions would have to compete for it.

I’m a corp. member serving In Nnewi, Anambra. This child (see attached pictures) is my neighbor’s kid and she is just 3 years old. Today, they gathered again and arrogantly plotted my death. They boasted that if "important" people have been killed in Akwa Ibom State who is this "small boy"?
My family has been harassed for so long. Too many people have asked my family to caution me otherwise they risk losing me.
