The battle for the soul of Lagos State took a strange twist yesterday when Governor Akinwunmi Ambode boldly told a meeting of leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC,

at the Bourdillon, Ikoyi home of the party’s National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that he will not step down for their preferred candidate in the 2019 governorship race in the state.

The meeting chaired by Tinubu and called under the banner of Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) the most powerful clique in Lagos APC also had in attendance outgoing governor of Osun, Rauf Aregbesola, his newly elected successor, Gboyega Oyetola, Ambode and other members of the 22-member council.

A reliable source at the meeting told Saturday Sun that “Ambode was told in plain terms that the party will not support his second term ambition and as such should step down for the candidate the party members are clamoring for.

But throughout the whole discussion and till the meeting ended, the governor stood his ground, explaining why he must run and that he will run if APC desires to win the state.”

The governor was said to have listed his achievements to convince the party leaders who equally failed to shift ground. “He was busy speaking grammar when no single member at the meeting supported him. We wish him luck”, the source added.

The meeting, however, ended with a directive to the State Working Committee of the party to address a press conference today, Saturday at the party’s secretariat on Acme road, Ikeja where the preferred governorship candidate Jide Sanwo-Olu and his running mate,

Femi Hamzat will be officially presented to party members to vote for at the governorship primaries scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday.

The Ambode camp, however, appears determined to enter into full battle with Tinubu and his men. A source close to the governor told Saturday Sun yesterday that, “Tinubu and his men are jokers, if they fail to present Ambode for the second term, they will lose Lagos like they lost Osun, forget the eventual manipulation of the final result.”

“Ambode is the party’s poster boy, and that’s why President Buhari asked the SGF, Boss Mustapha to wade into the Lagos ticket issue but if they ignore even the president’s intervention, they will be doomed like Osun.

Nigerians will see that Tinubu is overrated as has shown in Osun. You can see that the president had to send Fayemi, Oshiomhole, and others to step into the Osun election, the presidential emissaries didn’t go to meet Tinubu and Aregbesola who were in Osogbo before they went straight to meet Omisore in Ile-Ife, that shows how less they regard him”, the source added.

The Ambode camp had hoped that yesterday’s meeting will end in their favor but was shocked by the insistence of the party leaders that the governor must step down.

Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, has apologised to leaders and presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for his anti-party outburst on Wednesday.

At the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party on Friday afternoon, Wike regretted his comments and assured party leaders he would watch his comments going forward.

“When we demanded apology from him, he apologised and the party has reconciled,” Okwesilieze Nwodo, a former chairman of the PDP who attended the NEC meeting disclosed.

Nwodo, a former Governor of Enugu State, said it was after Wike’s apology that the party went on to have a “unanimous decision”, to move the party’s convention for election of presidential candidate to Port Harcourt, at the heart of Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger-Delta.

Wike sparked political tension amongst PDP leaders and presidential aspirants when he said on Wednesday that the presidential primaries must hold in Port-Harcourt, saying unequivocally that any contrary venue would cost the PDP in next year’s presidential election.

The Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property has arrested two whistle blowers for allegedly misleading it with false information.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the alleged false information was provided against Mr Emmanuel Mbaka, foremost real estate developer and Managing Director of Platinum Mortgage Bank.

The male suspects, Prince Jeff Ove, 37, from Bayelsa, and Mohammed Sanusi, 39, from Kogi, were presented to newsmen by the spokesperson of the panel, Lucie-Ann Laha, in Abuja on Friday.

“We received information from the suspects that the victim was a politician who looted a large amount of money and stashed it in his house. “We have found out that the person is not a politician. I don’t think association with politicians automatically makes you a politician.

“We were told there was a large cache of money in his house. The panel has carried out a thorough investigation, turned the house inside out and we found nothing,’’ she said.

Laha, who apologised to Mbaka on behalf of the panel, said the suspects would be prosecuted to show that the Federal Government’s Whistle-blower Policy was not an instrument of character assassination.

“The policy is meant to encourage Nigerians to assist anti-corruption agencies with credible information to apprehend those that have looted the commonwealth of Nigerians.

“Anyone who brings information to the panel and any other anti-corruption agency is assured of confidentiality and certain rewards.

“Conversely, when Nigerians try to circumvent this policy by giving false information in a bid to malign other Nigerians, the law says we should reprimand them, which is what we are doing here today,’’ she said.

Speaking to newsmen, the two suspects said they were misled by informants, and apologised to Mbaka while pleading with the panel for forgiveness.

Ove said, “I was in Bayelsa when I got information that there was a fund that a politician kept in Abuja here.

“We came and someone introduced me to a friend, who also corroborated the information that has turned out to be false, and that was why I approached the panel to report.

“Once again, I apologise to the man, I am very sorry, I have learnt my lessons and I promise this will never happen again.’’

On his part, Sanusi said sometime in March, 2017, one Aliyu told him that he knew a house in Abuja where stolen money was being kept.

He said he never bothered to take the information to anti-corruption agencies because Aliyu had said he wasn’t too sure of its authenticity.

“But the brother of this very man (Ove) standing beside me here came all the way from Bayelsa and said he had a special power to enter the house and search it.

“He said all I needed to do was to show him the house, and he made me to understand that with the power he acquired from India he would be able to know whether the money was there or not.

“When we got there, he told me that the spirit had told him that there was money in the house, and that we should give him a little time to work on it,’’ he said.

Sanusi said he never knew that Ove and his unidentified brother had already approached the panel to inform it about the supposed money.

Due to the on going strike for increment in minimum wages NLC try’s to show government they are serious by closing down some stubborn government firm.

After Lagos airport was shutdown due to strike, Akwa Ibom State NLC youth wing also wasn’t left out in the face off with the government , they went to all government institutions and also to banks in the state to ensure that the seat at home order is strictly adhered to.

A Kano Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered the remand of two men, Ashiru Abdullahi, 36, and Murtala Musa, 24, in prison for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.

The defendants, who live at Dan Rimi Quarters, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, are facing a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and rape.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp. Pogu Lale, had told the court that an information was received at Shahuci Police Station Kano, that the defendants committed the offence on July 9 at Rijiyar Lemo Quarters, Kano.

He said that on the same date at about 9 a.m., the defendants criminally conspired together with one Abubakar, now at large, deceived and lured the 13-year-old girl into the said Abubakar’s room.

“The defendants forcefully had unlawful sexual intercourse with the victim one after the other, ” he said.

The defendants, however, denied committing the offences.

Lale said the offences contravened Sections 97 and 283 of the penal code.

The Chief Magistrate, Muhammad Jibril, ordered the suspects be remanded in prison until the next adjourned date.

Jibril, thereafter, adjourned the case to Oct. 9, for further mention.
