Lekki The Coming Disaster

The aim of this article is to share with all well meaning Nigerians the future dangers surrounding the Lekki Peninsula.
Specifically ecological and geographic dangers worsened by political and human failure.

Lekki Peninsula is located in the South East of Lagos State. Lekki is surrounded by large water masses. The peninsula's location and sea level means it is particularly venerable to storm surges and floods. Throw into the picture the global phenomena of climate change and global warming then you have a recipe for disaster.

All geographical calculations by scientists show that global warming is increasing. The means the ice of the polar caps are melting rapidly.
What this means is that earths water mass is increasing. Another phenomena from global warming is intense and large volume rainfall. The implications for Lekki will be increased flooding, erosions and water pollution.

To make matters worse there's another problem in this mix. Rapid population growth in Nigeria has meant the scramble and demand for land. This demand has led to the reclaiming and sand filling of wetlands and lagoon shores. In the quest for profits from real estate natural ecological drainage systems have been built over.
The Lagos State Government using the Lekki Peninsula Land Use Plan and Development Scheme had an initiative to develop the peninsula. Unfortunately in many places the development has not been in tandem with global best practices. The intentions from 1980 were good but the execution was far from desirable
These projects have been often hastily and inconsiderately done. What was sold to prospective buyers as dream homes in many places are effectively "flood planes". This is because of the aforementioned land reclamation practices, failure to invest in proper drainage infrastructure

In 2009 the Lagos state govt tried the Infrastructure Master Plan and Land Use Plan to address the problems that arose. This in itself has largely been a failure. This is because of politics, corruption and administrative malpractice. Poor town planning has been used in many housing projects in Lekki. Add to that the embezzlement of funds meant for infrastructure and you have a double whammy of trouble.
The only way to minimize perennial flooding in Lekki is to go back to the drawing board and do the job properly.
But it is unlikely that this would happen as the implication would be the demolition of billions of naira worth of real estate and properties. But this is the only way to fix a mammoth problem of poor town planning and drainage infrastructure. Another solution is that Nigerians all do their bit to reduce activities that lead to global warming.

Until this is addressed flooding, erosion, water pollution will be a constant feature in Lekki and may eventually make parts of the peninsula untenable.
