Always nice to see this qq over and over again.... I think it's always a difficult decision to make.... Was in the States for almost 4 years before heading back to Naija.... Was quite fortunate though....as I was head hunted to come back to work here.... Naija is a lovely place if u have d means to make a living. If u are coming for ur service year (NYSC)...den u shldn't have a problem... Suggest u use d time to rack up some professional certifications.... A younger friend did dat in 2011.... U will be shocked at d level of accomplishments d friends u left have achieved... If it's to come stay...like others suggested....make sure u have funds...I suggest u get a job before taking d plunge.... Test the waters....have an exit plan... As far as I'm concerned....d problem with most returnees is that they've conditioned their minds to a certain level.... Very wrong....I did bikes a lot when I first arrived 'cos my car had not come in... Cared less who was watching....knew what I wanted.... Humble urself and be street smart.... ...Above all pray hard.... On a side note....I know several Nigerians in their 40s in d States who really want to come back but are tied down 'cos of mortgage et al.... Besides....they are scared they can't meet up with their colleagues who they left behind.... |

Good day, @Original Poster: Sorry to piggy back on ur post, Mr. Sunday Aina, is it possible to arrange a mortgage to construct residential property of 2 duplexes on a land. In other words, I have a land but need mortgage to finance the construction of the houses? My understanding of the way the banks work is that they prefer to finance the purchase of a completed property? Thanks and kind regards, |

Ok All, Interesting thread no doubt. I actually do read all threads that have to do with this burning qq. Staying back in the West or moving back to Nigeria. Fortunately, I have been thru the 2 worlds and would like to share my experience, 1) Don't deceive yourself, there is truly nothing like home. I always tell people, if u didn't get the opportunity to travel in the first place, wouldn't u have remained in Nigeria and make the best of what we've got here, 2) Life in the West is lonely and I dare say that. Your folks and relatives will become strangers to u. The Nigerian churches do not help matters as the Pastor is either looking to get his/her own papers too or means of sustenance. 3) Nigeria is tough and I dare say that again, but like a poster rightly suggested, u must make up your mind and decide what u want in life, 4) Racism is real, I used to think racism was only common in less sophisticated environments but was proved wrong so many times, By and large, if u decide to come back home. U must drop every garb of 'I'm coming from abroad and behave like the Nigerian that u are'. 'Time and chance happeneth to them all' says the Bible. Be humble and willing to take cabs, hop on a bike and sweat. U should have a plan for the eventual transition home. Look for a job. Believe me, there are still openings with several multi-nationals in this country. Only in Feb, a friend was relocated from d middle east by one of the big 5 telcos in Nigeria. Have your business plan well written and tested. There are several opportunities in this country. This morning, I looked at the empty PET bottle of water I just finished consuming and d thot of recycling came to mind. In the almost 4 years I spent in the US, I met several people in their 40s and 50s who really wanted to come back home but cannot handle the fear of resettlement. The greatest fear in my opinion is the fact that their colleagues in Nigeria have since moved on. For me, it's been an experience. I have witnessed all sorts and heard all sorts. One thing is sure though, I have no regrets whatsoever. Truthfully, I am living my dreams. All said, we are products of our CHOICES and do not forget the GOD factor, Let Him guide your steps, |
All, Thanks for ur comments. Needless to say NL is simply one good resource. I've also had issues with some company called PSI Logistics in Houston, TX. The clowns are nothing but crooks. Lies, all sorts. Does anyone know any reliable company that I can use to air freight some personal items such as cameras, shirts, laptops et al to Nigeria? Please, RELIABLITY before price. Infact, Gina-Ukey, which one of the recommended freighters have u used and please, what was ur experience like, |
@Poster Where exactly in Gbagada is Millenium Estate? Thanks |
@Poster, Yaba and its environs is about 8 digits, 12M up to 20M in some instances depending on its proximity to Herbert Macaulay Way. Akoka and its environs which is a little bit inside is from 8M upwards. If you are serious with this request. Kindly send me an e-mail. I can link you with a VERY reliable land agent. e-mail addy is wilife1 at yahoo.com |

Econometrics with a Law degree, Please, do ur research as others have commented. I do not know any school that will admit u. If there is any, u may want to check d name, rating and certification, |
Good day All, U are right on the money Yodiyokun, d tax regime abroad is scary. Ireland may soon join UK in jerking up taxes. d US, I rest my case, Honestly think Canada fared better in this crisis, Be that as it may, relocation to Naija is tough but achievable. There are d good days and very bad days, @Tmoni, how do I share my e-mail without leaving it in public view, Thanks, |
This thread has always been helpful to me sha, Frankly, on d issue of pay, I used to think the same way too, Having spent about 3.5 years in the US studying and working, didn't take days to accept an offer from 1 of the O&G coys to relocate back here in March this year. As far as I'm concerned, timing is critical. Naija is one decision to be made with careful planning. Like Oga Aj rightly pointed, I could never have lived in the UK, d States as far as I'm concerned is more flexible. This is probably the most educative thread on NL, quite revealing and instructive, Kudos to u all, |
Hello there! This is a brilliant thread. Kindly send me your work notes that everyone seems to be requesting. The address is wilife1@yahoo.com Thanks and kind regards! |
@Dunnyadex, I can supply u with stocks from the US though. Kindly send me your email address and we can go from there. Thanks and kind regards. |
Seriously though, I have had issues with the MTN BIS service in the last 1 month. Please, can anyone share their experiences, Thanks and kind regards.!!! |
Good day, How much will it cost to clear a 2007 Toyota Camry from the Lagos port. The car is packed full with personal belongings for someone who just relocated back to Naija. Thanks !!! |
Thanks NLanders, U've always been so helpful. I don't know if any relevant thread to me exists Need advice on d cheapest network to use for phone calls btw my beau and I, Most of those I have heard of particularly from Starcomms and Visafone require 10 lines for activation. Please help !!! |
Ok, Just to add a few lines here. Look, whether we like it or not, an MBA will always make a difference. The downturn in the global economy should not be an excuse. Infact, this is the best time to strategise and re-discover one's self. If anything, the downturn in the economy is a wake up call for one to think thru his/her career. With a fully paid scholarship, ur friend had better jump at the offer, I hope the school is not one of the 'fly by night' schools in the UK though. Things are definitely going to get better and those that carefully navigate thru the lull will emerge big when the recession is over. |
Ok, Just to add my few cents. Just like a number of u mentioned, a higher degree whether in Naija or abroad is good but above all, one must establish a career path for him or her self. I was fortunate to realise what I wanted to do as early as when I was in my teens in secondary school. Completed ICAN in my second year in the university and made sure I got into KPMG, former Andersen. Wrote CISA, CMA and Project+ in the intervening years. Worked for some years, headed out for a Master's, worked briefly in d States and got head hunted back to Naija by a multi-national oil company. Clearly God's grace but also a well defined a career path helped. Frankly, there is so much emphasis on experience now. The 'palis' are good, they usually get you in but in these times, companies now do extensive search to be sure you have the work experience u claim to have!!! |

You have offered the best piece of advice here. Thanks alot this will surely assist me in my move. Are u in abuja or Lagos if you don't mind me asking. @Meddler, Lagos, and if u ask me, at the current pace of development and with the right leadership, Lagos will go places, |
Ok, This thread is indeed truly funny not with the hilarious posts by Nairalanders, Anyway, let me share with you my personal experience. Left for the States and came back about 4 years later. Spent 3 months so far and I must say it's been a world of intrigues! Headhunted and relocated to Naija by 1 of the oil and gas multi-nationals, My thoughts, 1) If you have money, u will really enjoy this country, 2) Lower your expectations to the barest minimum and make up ur mind to succeed. Look at it this way…if you didn't travel out in the first place, u would have remained in this country and succeeded no doubt! 3) Drop every toga of 'I just came back from abroad' and behave like a Nigerian that you are, No disrespect, if foreigners can live and do business here, nothing stops u from living and thriving in ur fatherland. 4) Respect everyone u meet and greet them dutifully. That gateman may become ur saviour tomorrow, 5) Make sure have a solid offer before heading this way…A lot of nairalanders can actually set u up well with the right contacts in the education field. Above all, ask God for guidance and be sure u are moving back for the right motive |
