Maize import was not banned.

It is the Federal Government, not the CBN, that has the capacity to ban the importation of a product.

What CBN said is that forex for maize importation can no longer be sourced through the CBN forex auction system.

Essentially they are telling maize importers to source it from the parallel market.

This increases the cost of maize importation by the extra cost of purchasing USD in the parallel market.

The question is whether buying maize that is imported with black market forex will still be cheaper than sourcing for locally produced ones .

Diz is not even a question ...
It is still cheaper to import .....
Even with black market forex....
Nigeria spent over $1.3 bllion dollars on cereals importation in 2019.....
While Cereals makes up Nigeria,s top ten imports in same year....
It simply means we have a lot of inefficiencies in the cereals value chain ...
That makes our products not competitive....
Why not fix the inefficiencies and make local production cheaper....
Stupid and ill times policy from the CBN Governor...

I have always been puzzled as to why businesses import maize into Nigeria.

Available data has shown that maize production has been around or above 10,000 MT yearly since 2014 ( 6 years ago).

On the demand side, domestic consumption has also hovered around that same value ( about 11,000) for 2019.

Unless the middle men in the value chain don’t play games in respect to inflating prices and steering up false scarcity. We should be self sufficient in meeting up with demand.

D problem aint
the demand and supply angle...
It is not competitive to produce in Nigeria...
Dats d problem...
Maize price in Nigeria is ard N185000 per ton....
While it cost of abt N75000 to import a ton of maize to Naija...
From India...
Dats why top guys will kill to get it into Nigeria illegally...
Lastly, most local producer cant guarantee continuous Supply and quality
It is a goldmine 4 any1 dat can smuggle it.

The price is already through the roof. Feed makers can’t cope and are shutting down, poultry farmers have to buy feeds at higher prices but still sell their produce at the normal price (Egg is still #900) thereby selling at loss.

Most folks dont run a biz
So they dont know...
Most small scale poultry outfit will close up...
While prices of products with maize as input will be expensive...

Funny thing is that it doesn't seem like this downturn is ending anytime soon, prices may revisit the previous lows.

u cant blame him, as a leader u cannot be everywhere or know what's happening everywhere. The problem is there are too many double agents and sabotagers amongst the rank and file.

U discuss a plan with an individual, immediately the discussion is concluded, next minute the fellow is making a call to the enemy.

Apart from that another angle is that these bandits and terrorists are from the communities, they have friends and relatives in there. The problem is that they are sympathetic to these elements and reluctant to give them up to the special force ops. It is generally now accepted as an ideology, and little kids and youths now see and perceive these bandits as interesting and exciting.

How is banning importation of maize for the North?

Are there no maize farms in the South? Even if there isn't, is the North stopping the South from planting?

Even if they don't plant, is it better to import maize or buy locally and keep value in the country?

The North is the leading grain producer in Nigeria.
All heavy industrial users like Nestle, Dantee farms source farm produce esp grains from the North...
Cos of all round year supply....
Most households also source their grains from the North.
To cover for low production in the South...
Ask the Cbn Governor why he choose to ban maize importation this period....
June & July when prices of Agric products are expected to escalate....
And also in the midst of scarcity........

I know a soldiers job is to go to war, growing up my friend's father used to work with the DMI, I can't count the number of war films I have watched in his house. A soldier is always the most patriotic member of a society always valuing their team members lives to their own, taking bullets and bomb for some with a smiling face saying "tell my sweetheart I love her" with the surviving soldier begging the wounded soldier not to let go.
Sadly here we give some of our military men superb training, take them oversea, buy them lovely cars, when they are feeling good about the military we sent them to various post in trouble spot, only for us to waste the life we have nuture due to lack of credible intelligence and backup plans. I watch the Muguno attack I didn't see more than three terrorist truck in the video yet they were able to destroy 4 tanks and had access to one gun truck.
The question I asked was nobody manning those tanks, what ever happened to the military discipline I knew about that made me choose not to go to military school.
What happens to reconniscanse, do our military men all need to put military outfit, can't they intermingle with the local populace and pretend to be normal in combat environment that involves a non conventional terrorist.
I would be wrong to say the Military high command isn't trying their best but men this terrorist are getting primed up everyday. If we can't find a political solution to this problem, please allow us all the freedom to carry our A. K 47 and Rocket Propeller in combat zone pending when there is a cease fire and don't worry we can have them registered.
