Reducing the cost of governance by BAT and his team. Procurement of presidential jets (Over ₦150 billion), a presidential yacht ₦5.09 billion, and billions allocated for official residences, ₦21 billion (VP Lodge) can actually go a long way to reduce poverty.

Tinubu met fuel subsidy fraud, multiple exchange rates, weak reserves, fiscal deficits and a distorted economy. Removing subsidy and unifying FX were painful, but what credible alternative existed? Continue borrowing to subsidise consumption?

2. Inflation hurts, but reforms are beginning to stabilise the economy.
The World Bank says Nigeria has made meaningful progress in restoring macroeconomic stability, with stronger fiscal and external positions. Reuters also reports World Bank growth projection of about 4.2% in 2026.

3. Reserves have improved.
Nigeria’s net FX reserves reportedly rose from $3.99bn two years earlier to $34.8bn by end-2025, while gross reserves reached $50.45bn by mid-February 2026. That is not economic collapse.

4. Borrowing must be put in context.
Nigeria’s debt rise partly reflects exchange-rate adjustments and greater transparency, not simply reckless new borrowing. Even the finance minister made this point while forecasting stronger 2026 growth.

5. Social interventions are expanding.
NELFUND says over 1.5 million students have benefited, with more than ₦282bn disbursed. That is a concrete intervention, not propaganda.

6. The opposition has no serious alternative.
They condemn subsidy removal but admit they would remove it. They attack FX reform but offer no credible path back to artificial rates.

Tinubu should be judged by what he met, what he changed, and what is beginning to improve.

A lot remains to be done.

But progress is not cancelled because pain still exists.

Allocation of billions of Naira for SUVs for lawmakers, presidential yacht renovations, and large-scale villa upgrade are simple evidences that the administration did not treat the fiscal deficit as a structural emergency requiring shared sacrifice.

What credible alternative existed

1. Sequenced and Phased Subsidy Removal
2. Audited and Managed Currency Float
3 .Aggressive Anti-Corruption and Forensic Audit First
4. Production-Led Stabilization

While data's are showing positive change, over 70% of Nigerians in abject poverty don't see any change.

Tell Mr. President that a wealthy central bank buffer has not translated into cheaper food, affordable transportation, or increased purchasing power

World Bank clearly warned that classifying debt expansion as a "technical adjustment" dangerously downplays the underlying fiscal distress. Nigeria still use up to half its revenue to service debt obligations. Debt Obligations will aggressively crowd out vital public investments in security, healthcare, and infrastructure. Nigerian ongoing fiscal behavior showed that the administration has continued to push forward a heavily expanded borrowing plan which proves the government is still heavily reliant on structural new borrowing to cover basic operational expenses.

5. Social interventions are expanding.

NELFUND is loan. How will those students pay back in a country with massive unemployment rate.

While ₦282 billion sounds massive on paper, it must be weighed against the scale of the crisis created by the reforms.
The World Bank notes that BAT reform pushed an estimated 10 to 12 million additional Nigerians below
the poverty line. A student loan scheme targeting 1.6 million individuals does not replace a comprehensive, functional social safety net for
country of over 200 million people facing hyperinflation.

6. The opposition has no serious alternative.

The opposition frameworks argued that safety nets must be fully funded, visible, and operational on the exact day a policy shift occurs.
BAT announced "subsidy is gone" instantly, but took over a year to deploy student loans, distribute
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, and scale up cash transfers.

The alternative path was to build the cushion first, then remove the floor.

7. Tinubu should be judged by what he met, what he changed, and what is beginning to improve.

The core economic debate is simple. Is macroeconomic stabilization worth the severe microeconomic pain?

A successful medical surgery means very little if the patient does not survive the recovery period.

In a sane clime.. .Tinubu will lose before 12 0 clock on election day. But, Nigeria aint a sane country.
