Klopp’s team won the Premier League – the Reds’ first English top-flight title for 30 years.

Emma Hayes recently won the FA Women’s Super League manager of the year award after leading Chelsea to the title.

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa won the Championship award after guiding his side to the title and promotion to the Premier League.

Every August, we have the thankless task of predicting how the final Premier League table will look come May.

This season, of course, how things stood in May mattered little, with the campaign not coming to an end until July because of coronavirus.

This 11-month season has brought drama, relief for champions Liverpool and misery for those at the bottom. It has also thrown up plenty of surprises.

Here, we assess every team’s 2019-20 campaign – and also look back at whether we were anywhere near being right with our pre-season predictions.

Aston Villa – final position, 17th
Left it very late to save themselves with the win over Arsenal and the draw at West Ham United – regrouped well after the break in the season but got lucky with goalline technology and Sheffield United’s “ghost” goal. Huge relief given the serious transfer outlay and after being so poor for so long but have now bought time to improve the squad to avoid similar suffering next season. Will their talisman Jack Grealish be around to see it?

Pre-season prediction: 14th

What we said in August: “A season of consolidation is in prospect at one of the great old clubs.”

Arsenal – 8th
Dreadful start to the season saw the sacking of Unai Emery in December. Signs of progress under Mikel Arteta that included a victory over champions Liverpool and a place in the FA Cup final. Still light years away from old glories and must get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to sign a new contract. Will Arteta be working with a smaller budget than his rivals this summer?

Pre-season prediction: 6th

What we said in August: “Best bet may be a domestic cup.”

Injured Paris St-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe will miss the Champions League quarter-final with Atalanta in Lisbon on 12 August.

Mbappe, 21, sustained an ankle injury during the French Cup final against Saint-Etienne on Friday, ruling him out for three weeks.

He could return for the semi-final on 18 August, if PSG qualify.

Scans confirmed “an ankle sprain with damage to the external ligament”, the club said.

PSG added: “The player is expected to be sidelined for approximately three weeks.”

France international Mbappe left the pitch in tears after being fouled by Saint-Etienne defender Loic Perrin in the first half of PSG’s victory.

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy became the oldest player to win the Premier League Golden Boot after finishing the season with 23 goals.

The 33-year-old ended up a goal clear of Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Southampton striker Danny Ings, both on 22.

Vardy is the ninth English player to win or share the Golden Boot.

Last season Liverpool duo Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah and Arsenal’s Aubameyang shared it with 22 each.

Vardy still finished clear despite failing to score on the final day as Leicester lost 2-0 to Manchester United to miss out on a Champions League place.

David Silva says he wouldn't change a thing about his 10 glorious years at Manchester City.

The ex-Spain playmaker, 34, will play his 309th and last Premier League match for City against Norwich on Sunday.

Silva, who has won four Premier League titles, has enjoyed one of the great careers of the modern English game.

"When I look back at everything, I could never in my wildest dreams have imagined what I would achieve," he said.

Silva has scored 60 Premier League goals since joining City from Valencia in 2010, winning the FA Cup twice and the EFL Cup five times.

Eleven months after it started, the 2019-20 Premier League season is almost at an end.

There’s been great goals, titanic tussles and historic moments as Liverpool secured their first top-flight title in 30 years in a campaign that was disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

We take a look at the 12 most memorable events of a long, dramatic and unusual season.

Norwich beat Manchester City

Norwich’s win against Manchester City was their second on their return to the Premier League

Norwich’s return to the Premier League may only have been short-lived but they should certainly be praised for sticking to their style throughout.

Their easy-on-the-eye football was a welcome addition and early in the season it helped them produce a couple of shocks – most notably when they beat reigning champions Manchester City 3-2 in September.

That was City’s first defeat since January 2019 and gave the Canaries hope that they could avoid the drop. Ultimately, they ran out of steam but this result will live long in the memory of Norwich fans.

Leicester put nine past Southampton

All three of Vardy’s goals came in the second half of the 9-0 win at Southampton

Given how Southampton have played since the restart in June, it is hard to believe they were on the end of a defeat earlier in the season that almost went into double figures.

Back in October, Leicester ran riot as Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy both scored hat-tricks in a 9-0 win.

It was an embarrassing scoreline at the time and put the Saints into the relegation zone, but in many ways it proved the making of them. They went on to survive comfortably and could be a good shout to battle much higher up the table next season.

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been appointed as manager of La Liga side Villarreal on the three-year deal.

The 48-year-old Spaniard succeeds Javi Calleja, who left the club despite a fifth-placed finish that secured a Europa League spot.

Emery has been out of work since being sacked by Premier League Arsenal in November after 18 months in charge.

Sunday’s Premier League season climax is set to be a nerve-shredding one for teams battling to avoid relegation.

Norwich are certain to finish bottom of the table – and two from Aston Villa, Watford and Bournemouth will join them in the Championship next season.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says he respects Arsenal on the pitch – but he cannot say the same about how the Gunners conduct themselves off it.

A week after Manchester City learned their two-year European ban had been overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), tensions are still running high.

Some senior figures within the game are annoyed City have not been punished for Financial Fair Play regulation breaches, while the club are angry at the behaviour of some of their rivals.

Last week, Guardiola demanded an apology and told rival clubs to stop “whispering” about City behind their backs.

Marcelo Bielsa is “absolutely at the top of the list” as a manager, says Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Argentine Bielsa guided Leeds back to the Premier League after a 16-year absence and his team have since been crowned Championship winners.

“He has done an exceptional job,” Guardiola said.

“He is unique in world football because of the special way he plays. I learnt a lot about his style, his final product. He’s an incredible person, so special.”

Bielsa has managed Argentina and Chile at international level and clubs including Athletic Bilbao, Marseille, Lazio and Lille, before joining Leeds in 2018.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he will stick with goalkeeper David de Gea despite his latest errors in the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Chelsea.

De Gea, 29, could not keep out Olivier Giroud’s opener and then fumbled Mason Mount’s long-range effort into his net a minute into the second half.

“[David] knows he should save that one 100 times out of 100 but that’s football for you,” said Solskjaer.

“It is done. Move on. I know he is a mentally strong person and goalkeeper.”

Manchester United will not get Jadon Sancho in a cut-price deal from Borussia Dortmund despite the financial impact of Covid-19.

United have made the 20-year-old England forward one of their major targets when the transfer window opens on 27 July.

It was initially thought Dortmund, who are in the process of completing the signing of Jude Bellingham from Birmingham after the 17-year-old opted to sign for the Bundesliga side despite United’s interest, wanted in excess of £100m for Sancho.

Four matches will be played each day during the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, FIFA has announced.

The group games will be played over a 12-day period, with matches not being assigned to particular venues until after the finals draw in March 2022.

Kick-off times for the first two rounds of games will be 1pm, 4pm, 7pm and 10pm local time with the eight stadiums all within a 40-mile radius of each other.

It means supporters and media could attend two games on the same day.
