Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe said his side went into half-time of Sunday’s remarkable 4-1 win over Leicester with their survival hopes “as bleak as they could be”.

The Cherries were six points from safety in the as-it-stands table with just nine points remaining after a toothless 45 minutes which saw Jamie Vardy’s goal give Leicester the lead and star defender Nathan Ake come off injured.

But an incredible two-minute spell saw Howe’s side take the lead and Leicester go down to 10 men, with striker Dominic Solanke finally scoring his first league goal for the club.

Two more goals saw Bournemouth win a Premier League game after trailing at half-time for the first time in 28 attempts to leave them just three points from safety.

David de Gea needs trophies to go with personal milestones, says Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

De Gea is due to become only the second United keeper after Alex Stepney to reach 400 appearances for the club against Southampton on Monday.

The Spaniard, 29, has won United’s player of the year prize four times, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I don’t think he will be happy until he wins the bigger trophies,” said Solskjaer.

“Yes, he’s won personal awards but David is not the type to care about that. I think he wants the team to lift big as well. Staying at Manchester United for this amount of time and not having won more is something he will feel is a black dot in his career.”

Incorrect penalty decisions were made by the video assistant referee in all three of Thursday’s games, a former referee working for the Premier League match centre told BBC Match of the Day.

Bruno Fernandes won a spot-kick which he scored in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

James Ward-Prowse hit the bar after a disputed penalty as Southampton drew 1-1 with Everton.

And Tottenham should have had a penalty for a Joshua King shove on Harry Kane in a 0-0 draw with Bournemouth.

Ex-Premier League official Dermot Gallagher advised that United and Southampton should not have been given penalties, but Tottenham should have been awarded one.

Boss Jose Mourinho is confident he can win trophies at Tottenham and does not think the club need to make a “huge investment” this summer.

Mourinho, appointed in November, has a three-year contract and believes in that time he can deliver Spurs’ first silverware since the 2008 League Cup.

Spurs host Arsenal in Sunday’s north London derby with both sides competing to earn a Europa League spot.

The Champions League returns in August featuring a mini-tournament of knockout games to decide the winner.

On Friday, the draw will take place for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final at 11:00 BST, with all matches set to take place in Lisbon, Portugal.

Premier League teams Chelsea and Manchester City are both aiming to take part in that mini-tournament by securing a last-eight place in early August.

The Europa League draw will also take place on Friday, with Manchester United, Wolves and Rangers the British sides still in the hunt for a place in the last eight.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he cannot leave Mason Greenwood out of his team after the teenager scored for the third straight Premier League game.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says his dream is to have a team “full of Scousers” – with all first-team players graduating from the club’s academy.

Midfielder Curtis Jones – born in Liverpool and a product of the club’s youth system – signed a five-year contract on Saturday.

Jones, 19, then scored his first Premier League goal on Sunday as the new champions beat Aston Villa 2-0.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he does not understand the use of pitch-side monitors in the Premier League after the decision to send off Eddie Nketiah in the 1-1 draw with Leicester.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially showed Nketiah a yellow card for his high tackle on Justin James.

But after consulting with the VAR officials and viewing a replay himself, he changed this to red.

“In the last year I have never seen a referee check any images,” said Arteta.

When Manchester United sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan last summer, they were accused of having made a significant error and of leaving themselves short of goalscoring options.

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side won just two out of seven games at the start of 2020 and were six points below the top four – leading to the surprising signing of Odion Ighalo on loan from the Chinese Super League – their manager’s decision-making looked questionable.

But as United have improved this year, so have their front three. The forwards who started Saturday’s 5-2 thrashing of Bournemouth – Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood – have become goal machines, with 55 between them in all competitions.

They scored four against the Cherries – two for Greenwood and one each for Rashford and Martial.

This was the third time since Christmas they had all scored in a Premier League game, with one of the trio scoring twice on each occasion.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expects the club to win their appeal against a two-year ban from European competition.

City took their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and expect a result in the week commencing 13 July.

“We are ready,” said Guardiola.

“I have a lot of confidence and trust with the people that we will be allowed to play the Champions League because we want to be on the field during these years.”

City were given the punishment, and also fined 30m euros (£25m), by European football’s governing body Uefa for “serious breaches” of club licensing and Financial Fair Play rules.

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho says he was “destroyed a little bit on the inside” by his team’s 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United on Thursday.

Spurs were runners-up in last year’s Champions League under Mauricio Pochettino but are currently ninth in the Premier League table, nine points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Asked about Thursday’s loss, Mourinho said: “I thought that by a desire point of view, they put more than us.

“That’s something that disturbs me.”

Spurs have qualified for the Champions League for the last four seasons and have not finished lower than sixth in 11 years, but Mourinho’s side have won just one of their last six Premier League matches.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says there needs to be a “big reflection” at the end of the season on how to improve the video assistant referee system.

Lampard was speaking after Tottenham had an equalizer ruled out against Sheffield United on Thursday because of a Lucas Moura handball in the build-up.

Premier League clubs should not be allowed to have betting firms on their shirts, a House of Lords Select Committee report has recommended.

The cross-party committee, set up to look at the impact of the UK’s gambling industry, also says such sponsors on Championship club shirts should be phased out by 2023, and that other sports should end shirt betting sponsorship in three years.

This season, half of Premier League clubs and 17 of 24 Championship clubs are sponsored by bookmakers.

The recommendations are part of a 192-page report warning more needs to be done to prevent gambling-related harm, with the Gambling Act 2005 under review by ministers.

Clubs promoted to the Premier League for the next two seasons will receive £8m less than expected.

The reduction is because of a £330m rebate the league has agreed to pay broadcasters because of the temporary suspension of the current season due to the Covid-19 crisis.

The Premier League agreed on a deal with broadcasters that included payment for greater flexibility over start and end dates to the next two seasons, the first of which will now begin later than planned.

The rebate will be staggered over the next two years.

As first reported by the Guardian, clubs that join the top flight during that period will be expected to share the cost.

Valencia has sacked manager Albert Celades after only nine months in charge, while the club’s sporting director Cesar Sanchez has resigned.

Voro Gonzalez has replaced Celades as manager until the end of the season in what is his sixth spell as Valencia’s temporary boss.

He first took over in 2008 after Ronald Koeman’s sacking and helped the La Liga side avoid relegation.

While that initial approach failed to convince 36-year-old Robben, talks were revived last month.
