Lagos tops IGR report

Last Updated: 12 February 2015|16:00 GMT

In the report which was signed by Statistician General, Yemi Kale in collaboration with the Joint Tax Board, Lagos State generated 185.541 billion naira in 2010, 202.761 billion naira in 2011 and 219.202 billion naira in 2012 making it the state with the highest internally generated revenue(IGR).

“First of all, we see patterns. Lagos stands out from the rest of the country, totally in a class of its own. Two, the south is totally different from the north and generally the economies in the north evidently lag behind,” Opeyemi Agbaje, CEO of RTC Advisory Services told CNBC Africa.

According to Agbaje, the data showed the impact of the major population and commercial centres especially in Southern Nigeria.

“So we see that the top seven or eight states are Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Oyo, Enugu, and Cross River. Relatively, the South West stands out even from the rest of the South region. All of these give you a sense around the state of economic development in the regions,” he added.

Rivers State came in behind Lagos state with 173.047 billion naira and a breakdown showed that the state generated 49.585 billion naira in 2010, 57.187 billion naira in 2011 and 66.275 billion naira in 2012.

Delta ranked third with the most IGR, the data revealed that 26.087 billion naira was collected in 2010, 34.750 billion naira in 2011 and 45.566 billion naira in 2012.

“It also reflects the social statistics in terms of education, entrepreneurial activities, the development of businesses, the development of commerce and industries across those regions.”

Nonetheless, most states in the North reported very low IGR’s and Agbaje believes that the social systems in that region are faulty, especially the educational system.

“You can’t build entrepreneurial activity if your people are not educated. You can’t build small businesses, IT businesses, small shops and supermarkets, based on an illiterate population. Principally, the major element for me is, dealing with education,” he explained.

While Sokoto state collected the least IGR of 3.888 biliion naira because the state’s IGR for 2011 and 2012 could not be computed, Yobe State’s IGR declined from 5.960 billion naira in 2010 to 1.785 billion naira in 2012.

“On the part of the Government, it probably reflects the state of the investment climate across regions. So government, have they created infrastructure, have they created incentives, have they created laws, have they created security? All of those things are what would want to make investors invest in the region,” he said.
I wonder whether some of you went to school. Economic viable state are not measured by IGR but the quatum of both small and medium scale activities carried by private sector. It is a private sector driven economy not a state or govt driven. To be candid with you the city that is the most viable economically is Aba. Nnewi comes next. These are places where individuals are engaged in one small and medium scale biz. Remeber YOUR POST IS TALKING OF STATE IGR and the post here is talking about cities not state. You mentioned akwaibom, delta, cross river's high igr, does it now means tha uyo, asaba, calabar as cities are economically viable? NO. But look at Anambra state, even not been among the 7 states you mentioned has 2 great economical viable cities of Onisha and Nnewi. That is the reason why this state is the most stable state in naija: debt free, yearly increasing of workers salary when others are cutting down etc. It is igr, it is beyond that.

Abeg, when did Lagos become a City?
Compare Ikeja with Port Harcourt, Nnewi, Onitsha, Abeokuta, etc and let's see..
you are absolutely right. Lagos is a metropolitant city. If we go by that we may come up with at least two viable city in lagos: ikeja and vi/ikoyi ie lagos Island. I dont think there is any far more than these two places in Lagos state. Remove this two, lagos will just be like any state. I have said it before, Abeokuta, owerri and co are not actually economically viable, not even the big city of ibadan or Enugu. This places are domain of civil servants and where people enjoy their money and retirement. That does not mean they are not great cities in their own respect.

all igbo cities for where? Owerri and Enugu may not even be there. Aba, onitsha, Nnewi should be among the first six with lagos topping it. Portharcourt and Abuja. Any thing outside this first six is a joke.

Lol...

Here's the list here, according to none oil IGR

1. Lagos (technically not a city)

2. Onitsha

3. Aba

4. Nnewi

5. Ogun state (Abeokuta): the steel industry
Abeokuta cannot be there because it is civil servant oriented though an ancient city like ib.

Where u put ibadan?
ibadan is not actually a ECONOMIC VIABLE CITY but civil servants oriented like Enugu coal. That it is large does not make it a viable one. The first 4 cities that sanusi of cbn started the cashless policy are the first tier viable city. They are Lagos, Abuja, Onitsha and Portharcourt. Others are Aba kano kaduna and ibadan. But the first 4 are the most viable economical. Nnewi is invariably included.

Universally, anything up to $10.000, even if the post erroneously said it's $5000, not reported to the Customs at the Airport is an offense.

This is not a tribal thing.

Those Trying To Make this a witch hunt thing, are full of mischief.

All the traders needed to do was declare their MONEY.

Trying to sneak a large amount of money out of the country, knowingly or not, is an offense.

They broke the law, and there are consequences for that. And remember, ignorance is not an excuse before the law, incase they claim they did not know they were breaking the law.

“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.
Matthew 6:34 MSG

This scripture open my eyes to the fact that there's something God is doing on the face of the earth and he wants us to get involved in it. All my daily desire, dreams is in what God is doing. All I need to do is to get it right and let my own agenda be replaced with God's Agenda.
Question: What is it that God is doing?
Answer: God is in the business of reconciling people back to himself and that is the reason why he sent his only begotten Son- Jesus and when Jesus was leaving this earth, he committed the same assignment into our hands to continue in what the father is doing.
This might be the time for you to get it right, relax and get employed by God. The Bible says God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.
Thats cool but the MSG Version is more of explanation of the King james version. I have to reread it several times to find out what and what.

I was like, do they select during their registration or what. Well, this kids would grow up and miscontrued to be bleached queen. Somebody like Bianca Onoh look more of halfcast or more of mulatto. You will be shocked seeing my grandma picture or even my pa extremely light but never albino. You can only identify them as pure black just by the textsure of their hair and not by their fair skin.

It a welcome development.

Please don't poltisize this topic
I am afraid it may not be a welcome development because i expected things to be improving in some basic sectors of general comsumables. Like now, we expected marginal reduction in fuel price to atleast #80 per litre and further falling in price but things will rather remain static or even increase. Now again, i expected stability in Nigeria economy if i want to believe this govt that Buhari has atleast for the past 4 months blocked all the corruption loop holes. This is not reflecting in the economy but all am still hearing is the lamentation about 16yrs of pdp misrule. I heard also that some invisible politicians in Buhari's dream brought their billions of stollen $. All gullible nigerians clapped and praised Buhari's body odour which they say is his body language. Lets just see changes happening before the average Naija.
