The quantum of electricity generated in the country fell by over 1,000 megawatts within a space of eight hours on Tuesday.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria stated that the generated electricity dropped by 1,018.5MW between 6am and 3pm.

Data from the System Operator showed that the country generated 2,418.5MW of electricity as of 6am. But in a statement by the TCN around 3pm, the firm noted that the total power generation had dropped to 1,400MW.

The Assistant General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN, Mr. Clement Ezeolisah, said in the statement, “The management of the System Operation/Market Operation of the Transmission Company of Nigeria has alerted that electricity generation into the national grid has dropped to 1,400MW as of Tuesday, 17th of May, 2016.

“The downward trend of electricity generation is due to constraints in the thermal power stations, which have prevented the generators from producing at optimal levels. However, it is noteworthy to report that all stakeholders are working assiduously to achieve improvement in the power supply deliverables. The attendant inconvenience as a result of low power generation is regretted.”

Additional data from the SO, which were obtained by our correspondent in Abuja, showed that the country recorded a peak generation of 2,868.3MW the previous day, while the lowest generation was 2,166.1MW.

The national peak forecast was put at 17,520MW, while the total installed and available capacities for the country were 11,165.4MW and 7,139.6MW, respectively.

Officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing attributed the constraints faced by thermal power generating plants to the persistent poor supply of gas to fire up the gas turbines, stressing that the vandalisation of pipelines in recent times had massively hit the sector negatively

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo give insight into President Muhammadu Buhari’s stand on increase in the pump price of petrol yesterday.
Osinbajo said as one who had always kicked against hike in the price of petrol, his boss had no choice but to succumb to the increment last week. The vice president said it was the hardest decision Buhari had to make.
Osinbajo laid this bare at the public presentation of Anatomy of Corruption in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges & Solutions, a collection of essays edited by Yusuf O. Ali, (SAN) yesterday.
He gave reasons for t he increment inadequate foreign currency and that even if all four refineries in the country worked at optimal levels, they would only be able to meet 40 per cent domestic consumption.
“If there is one person in Nigeria who believes that petroleum prices should not go up by one naira, it is President Buhari.”

Osinbajo reiterated that the president simply had no other option than agree to the increase and added that although Buhari did not want the fuel price to go up, “he was left with no choice. What can we do if we don’t have foreign currency, we have to import fuel?”
The vice president also gave reasons why importation of fuel will not abate soon.
“Even if we repair our refineries today, we would still be able to refine 40 percent of our petroleum, so, we still need to import. In the absence of foreign exchange and you have to import your refined petroleum, what are you left with? A lot of the problems associated with the refineries are corruption related,” he said. He noted that corruption “explains why many states are owing salaries and continue to owe salaries.”

Stressing the consequences of corruption, Buhari’s deputy said: “When you consider that today, Nigeria’s reserves stands at about $27 billion and we are investigating $15 billion from one sector alone, that is over half of the entire reserves of the country. We are investigating cases which shows that over $15 billion was lost in one type of contract alone. We are not talking of oil contracts, we are talking of security related contracts alone. We have not talked at all about oil contracts involving several billions.”
Meanwhile, a faction of the NLC, led by the Federal Government last night recorded a milestone as it reached an agreement with the Comrade Joe Ajaero-led faction of NLC not to go on strike but, instead, set up a joint committee to resolve the issues.
Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole who presented the agreement said the committee would work out a framework for the review of the national minimum wage.

Other highlights were for the committee to come out with modalities on how labour would be part of the implementation of the N500 billion social investment fund appropriated in the 2016 budget; and the reconstitution of the PPPRA board as well as review of the current N145 pump price of petrol.
He said the committee that would be chaired by a nominee of the Federal Government has two weeks to submit its report and added that the report would be deliberated by what he called a Committee of the Whole before making recommendations to government.
Ajaero confirmed what Oshiomhole read out as “the summary of the agreement.”

Regardless, Borno State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has indicated its resolve to join the nationwide strike slated for today by the national body of the union and it’s affliates. NLC state chairman, Comrade Ali Abana said the state chapter aligned with its national body in observing the strike.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has offered the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, free form to resit her mathematics exams after a major goof during budget defence at the National Assembly last week.
During the defence, she alleged that one of the exams body in the country made N16 billion from sale of forms and other services, and got additional N6billion from the federal government bringing the total to ‘N24billion’ yet remitted only N2million to the federation account.

Responding to the allegation, the registrar of WAEC Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, not only faulted the minister on the allegation, but also offered her chance to have another go in maths given the poor summation of the figures.

Uwadiae said: “It’s not enough to go to the Senate and reel out figures. The minister should know, that what Nigerian students pay to sit for WAEC examinations is simply an operational/management cost, that covers registration, data keeping and management, printing of examination papers, logistics, marking of scripts and production of certificates. And all these cost about N16 billion Naira.

“WAEC examination is not designed as a revenue generating source for the Federal Government. In fact governments in the past subsidized the examination fees, just to encourage education. The N6 billion she talked about is for payment of salaries and overheads for staff of the council.

“However, we do not know the mathematical formula the Honourable Minister used, when she said the summation of N16 billion Naira and N6 billion Naira was N24 billion Naira.

“I think somebody needs to resit her WAEC mathematics examination. And we in WAEC have offered to give her a free WAEC form in this respect

I've noticed so many Nigerians find it easy to run in droves to witness Bonnke's crusade but whenever they hear a Nigerian Pastor performs a miracle, they open their mouths to utter degrading words about Africa, Nigeria, and anything that belittles the country. They even make some of us who believe in God to look stu.pid. Meanwhile, they will never call Reinhard Bonnke's miracle "staged." If you do not believe, keep quiet and allow their followers hail their OWN. Africa is not the only continent where people serve God. The biggest Church in the world is in South Korea (not Nigeria). Korea is still a developed country with globally acceptable hardwares! They have the biggest church in the world few metres away from the country's National Assembly. Ours is in Mowe, Ogun state, several miles away from Abuja.

A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of the National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Olisa Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited, Junaid Sai’d, on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, told Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja how the sum of N500m in two tranches of N200m and N300m was allegedly transferred to Daniel Ford International Limited for the purpose of buying a landed property at Banana Island, Lagos for the couple.
Metuh is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for allegedly receiving N400million (Four Hundred Million Naira) from a former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), who is also being tried for his involvement in the $2.1 billion arms deal.

Sa'id, a member of the team that investigated the case, gave a blow-by-blow account of the activities carried out since the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) petitioned the Commission, which include the following: a correspondence with Diamond Bank Plc to obtain the mandate and statement of accounts for Destra Investment Ltd; correspondences with other banks to obtain mandates and statements of accounts of individuals and companies relevant to the case as well as letters to ONSA and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to him, responses from the CBN and ONSA confirmed that the former was given the mandate to pay the sum of N400m to Destra Investment Limited for the purpose of security services.

He said: "After the payment of N400m by ONSA, a further N150m was paid into the same account by one Kabir Ibrahim. Capital Field Investment Limited paid another N91m and another N82m was paid in by one Eyitoye. These funds formed the Naira equivalent of $2m, which Metuh gave to one Nneka Ararume, in cash.

"Amongst the disbursements made were N77.5m paid to one Yomi Badejo through his company, CMC Connect Ltd, to carry out campaign activities for the People's Democratic Party (PDP); N25m paid to one Alhaji Abba Dabo to carry out media activities for the PDP; N21.7m to Chief Anthony Anenih; N5m to Chief Kema Chikwe; N50m transferred to the joint account owned by Olisa and Kanayo Metuh.

"The sum of N500m was also discovered to have been transferred to Daniel Ford International Limited in two tranches for the purpose of buying a landed property at Banana Island by the 1st defendant and his wife.’’

Saí’d, who further stated that the team visited the residence of the first defendant and invited him to the Commission during the course of the investigation, told the court how Metuh had torn his statement into shreds, saying,

‘‘After he was interviewed, I asked him if he wanted to volunteer his statement and he answered in the affirmative. When he concluded writing his statement in four sheets of the Commission's statement form, he handed them over to me. I read what had been written and handed them over to my other team members to read. After that, I returned them to him for endorsement. He endorsed the first sheet and the second sheet. When he was about to endorse the third sheet, in which he stated that the money he received from the office of the NSA were used for PDP campaign activities and to settle his personal debt, to the surprise of the team, he suddenly tore the sheet into pieces. The pieces of the torn sheet were then recovered from him and registered as exhibits.

"Much later in the day, he requested to volunteer an additional statement, which he did.''

After cross-examination of the witness by the defence counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, the prosecution counsel, Sylvanus Tahir, then closed his case.

Ikpeazu prayed the court for adjournment, stating that he needed the certified true copy of the proceedings to open his defence.

However, Tahir objected to the motion moved by the defence.

After listening to both counsel, Justice Abang stated that the record of proceedings was not ready for certification, adding that it was not a valid reason for the defence to seek adjournment in view of the evidence that had so far been presented by the prosecution.

Consequently, the case was adjourned to February 18, 2016 for the defence to open his case.

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, yesterday said the former governor of the state, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, spent $150 million to fund the All Progressives Congress (APC’s) campaign.

Wike who called for a comprehensive fight against corruption, urged that there should be full support for the prosecution of all those who stole Rivers State’s money to sponsor the APC’s national election campaign.
According to him, between December 1 and 18 of 2014, Amaechi used $150 million from the state coffers to fund the APC campaign, promising that the state government will recover all stolen funds.

The governor also noted that he would not have contested a re-run governorship election because of the plot by the APC and the presidency to trigger a bloodbath in the state.
He said he was also aware of a plot to arrest him as soon as the Supreme Court gave the judgment against him, insisting that the verdict, which affirmed his victory at the April 11, 2015 poll, saved the state from imminent crisis.
Wike spoke yesterday at a thanksgiving service held at St. Peter’s (Anglican) Church, Rumueprikom Deanery, Port Harcourt, to mark his victory at the Supreme Court.
In attendance at the thanksgiving were Governors Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State, Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State.
Former First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan; former Rivers State Governors Peter Odili and Celestine Omehia; leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), legal luminaries and National and State Legislators, among others, also graced the ceremony. graced
While thanking the people for their support, Wike said his victory at the Supreme Court has reinforced his belief that nothing is impossible with God.

“Nothing is impossible with God. Men of God prophesied a few days to the Supreme Court that the judgment will confirm the mandate given to us by the Rivers people.
“We won the election clearly as has been confirmed by the Supreme Court. If there was a rerun, I wouldn’t have contested because there would have been bloodbath. I resolved not to be part of anything that would bring bloodbath. “
He disclosed that an evil plot had been hatched to arrest him, detain him to discourage Rivers people before the legislative elections earlier scheduled for February 6.
According to him, the political powers were already indiscriminately arresting PDP members and leaders across the state, preparatory to the rerun elections.

He assured the people of Rivers State that he will judiciously use the mandate to advance the course of development in the state.
The governor reiterated his earlier declaration that he will not allow the rigging of the rerun elections in the State, noting that any INEC staff who attempts to rig will be treated as an armed robber.
He said: “I am the executive governor of Rivers State and a strong one for that matter. We will support INEC to conduct credible elections. However, any official who plans to rig will get the treatment reserved for armed robbers.”
He noted that the failure of the evil plotters meant that Rivers people will return all the legislators whose elections were nullified by the Appeal Court.
“The national chairman of the APC said they will not wish to lose Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Abia States because they are the resource base of the nation, even though the price of oil is going down. Well, I don’t blame him: from 1st to 8th December, 2014, they took from Rivers State coffers $150 million and changed it at the Bureau de Change outlets and that was the period we were having primaries. So, Rivers State was the finance base of the APC.”
The governor assured the Rivers State APC governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside, that he will be accommodated in the process of developing the state. He added that Dakuku Peterside is not an orphan, saying that: “I will be a father to Dakuku Peterside. He is not an orphan.”

The governor thanked the Rivers people who stood by him throughout his election litigations, saying that it took pains to survive the period.
He advised: “What I want to say is that, if you do not know God, please from today, use my own experience and say God, I believe You. I want to worship You.”Well, it would not be surprising to say the type of bloodshed that would have happened in this state. God used Supreme Court to avert bloodshed in this state. What Supreme Court has done is to make people to have confidence in the judiciary.
”In fact, what was happening has got to the situation we did not know where and what to do. It would have been difficult if they had allowed what was happening at the top to be.
”But the Supreme Court has to stand firm and say ‘enough is enough’. The integrity of the judiciary must be protected. I want to thank them for standing firm,” he stated.


He flayed the APC for being desperate to win elections, alleging that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the Rivers federal and state Houses of Assembly, after the ruling party lost at the Supreme Court.
In his sermon, Archbishop of Niger Delta Province, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion ) Most Rev. Ignatius Kattey, said the victory of Wike at Supreme Court has brought peace to the state.
He called on the governor to be a father of all the people of the state.
He said: “The State would have been in confusion because God has saved the people from embarrassment. Make it your duty to always thank God” .

“Governor, you. Should be thankful to God for what he has done for you. If you are lucky you would have escaped, if you are The State would have been in confusion because God has saved the people from embarrassment. Make it your duty to always thank God” .

The state Publicity Secretary of APC, Christian Finebone, in text message said, “That is a big lie taken from the very depth of hell. Wike talks big and tough but behind his tough-talking is a moronic coward.
“He won’t advance that accusation beyond the comfort of his audience. His deeds are awaiting him and at the appropriate time he’ll be held to account. If he is serious let him go to court and summon Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi but you can be sure that he won’t do because he knows that Amaechi is without blemish

We came across the pictures of a woman named Mama Efisho, who is 191 years old according a great great grandson of the woman, Mr. Avuefeyen.

According to him, the woman who is about two centuries old ‘lives in Ellu (Edhemoko, Akaluba Street, Ellu in INLG).

Ellu is an Isoko, countryside community in Delta State of Nigeria that was founded around the 18th century.

The crop, Cassava, is the main foods consumed by Isoko people where Mama Efisho is from. Even though we are still waiting confirmation of her true age, what she eats probably explains her long life.

Cassava is loaded with magnesium and copper. A diet rich in magnesium promotes life-long health, lowering your blood pressure and reducing your risk of osteoporosis. While a diet rich in copper helps support healthy nerve function. A cup of cassava contains 23 percent of the copper you need each day, determined by the Institute of Medicine.

Each cup of cassava contains as well as 42 milligrams of vitamin E. This amount contributes 56 and 47 percent towards the daily vitamin C intake recommendations for women and men, set by the Institute of Medicine.

Cassava also has nearly 20 percent of your daily intake of folate. Including more folate in your diet protects against colon cancer and reduces the risk of complications during pregnancy and offers protection against coronary heart disease.

While questioning the validity of Mama’s birth, Mr. Avufeyen claimed that that she witnessed the birth of his grandfather.

If his claims are true then, Mama Efisho is not only Nigeria’s oldest woman alive, she will be the oldest woman alive anywhere.

This information comes right after civil servants in Brazil reported they have discovered the world’s oldest person – a 131-year-old father-of-three living with a wife 69 years his junior.

The Guinness Book of Records recognizes 112-year-old Yasutaro Koide from Japan as the oldest person alive.
And Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died aged 122 in 1997, held the record for the world’s longest living person.

That is until social services sent a picture of the man along side his birth certificate that said he was born in 1884.
