I don't think Mobil has Total Quartz 7000 equivalent in Nigeria, that is 10w40 or 15w50 (semi synthetic).

As for Quartz 5000, I don't know about it in EW engine. But I use it in my ZN3J and change it every 6 months.

Ikenna

Ok thanks. I hear the bulk buyers of quartz 7000 usually resell later at a higher price here. Will check today and if I dont get use the quartz 5000 at least for my trip tomorrow. Do have great day!

Talking about maintaining our lions... its really getting so frustrating one cant readily lay hands on recommended oil for 406, am told that quartz 7000 total oil is bought immediately it is supplied by interest groups in Makurdi. The frequent scarcity of quartz 7000 is worrisome and annoying.

@ Ikenna, usually flog my lion for 6000 kilometres on quart 7000. Whats the maximum usage for quartz 5000 pls? Need to travel on Wednesday and need to change oil, looking like I ll have to make do with quart 5000 since the quartz 7000 is becoming something else. Frustrating and annoying. Also whats the equivalent of quartz 7000 in other brands like Mobil? I hate begging for what I ll eventually pay for with my hard earned money jo...
thanks.

Finally took arrival of NGK spark plugs for my lion from Amazon U.S, been meaning to do her well for the past couple of weeks for her faithfulness all through my many journeys this year... In any case I ve not been too comfortably with whats been in my hood ever since I changed that which came with the car. So tomorrow my lion gets new plugs, will also change my brake fluid, been using standard e5 brake fluid but just learnt from the instruction on the cap of my brake fluid gauge that the recommended brake fluid grade for my lion is Dot4, never known the diff all th while but I simply head to the Total retail outlet here in makurdi. Actually not been so impressed with the performance of my brake for some time now . Have a great Sunday folks!

Aqva: Still loving my Peugeot. I'm even saving up for the 308. It's funny when some people lie to make a point. Why claim to have a 505 just to discredit it? Thanks to the informed persons here, we were already beginning to think the dude had a point.
The 206 is my third experience with a Peugeot. Previously drove my old man's 504 and 505 back in the days. Seriously saving up for the brand new 308.

Good thing you are not a band wagon follower. Knowing what one wants irrespective of bad media makes all the difference at the end of the day. Over the years the Lion brand has ruled over most parts of the world, the French Makers know this, they've produced cars at each turn that can compete and better their contemporaries and they simply don't have the time to indulge their detractors.

As for the question you asked, its a matter of honour- a quality some simply lack and cant get their head round.

You would be surprised that after 200,000 km, your gearbox oil will still look new.

If you want to find out, remove Transponder on the gearbox. Gearbox oil will likely drop. Come back and tell us what you see. You can hardly tell if its oil or water. It looks like water, its as light as water but a little bit sticky. Its even lighter than fully synthetic engine oil.

But like i said earlier, there is no harm in renewing it, if you can get the recommended oil grade outside the country or you sacrifice smooth shifting using available one in Nigeria.

Ikenna

No way man, right now my shifting is flawless and I intend to leave it that way... Thanks as always for your informative posts.
Car Talk / Re: Peugeot: Cars With Attitude! by wisesystem: 4:43pm On Jul 21, 2014
Ikenna351: Good morning house,

As new people are switching to Lions, I need to educate you guys on some tips that will help you keep your Lions in good shape and on the road beyond your imaginations.

Please, don't fall a victim to manual gearbox oil fluid change from our mechanics. Newly imported used Lions are always the victims here. They will tell or advice you to change the manual box fluid. Please, don't. Because, if you do, you won't enjoy the shifting anymore.

For most BVM5 boxes in modern Peugeots, TOTAL 75W-80 is recommended. But then, Peugeot said the oil in the box already is to be used for life, no need of changing it. But even if you are not comfortable with that claim or you observed a leakage and need to top up or change the fluid, then use TOTAL 75W-80. Its fully synthetic. But what we have in Nigeria are not fully synthetic: TOTAL 85W-90 & TOTAL 85W-140. The closest to the recommended fluid is the 85W-90. Of course, it won't harm the box if used, but the gear stick shifting will become hard and uncomfortable. You will need to apply pressure for the lever to go in a gear, unlike before you could shift with a finger or two.

Also, if you must top up, then you must drain the fully synthetic in the box and replace with the 85W-90, if you can't afford to import the 75W-80. Mixing fully synthetic with conventional fluid will damage box seals and your box will start losing fluid.

Hope that helps.

Ikenna

Very timely information, my car mileage is 86,000 now and was thinking of changing it for preventive maintenance reasons. The idea that the gear box oil fluid can serve the life of a car worries me given how dirty those changed usually look...

I wish to thank you guys for your support all through my travails. Goodnews is I made it to lagos 12.30pm yesterday without much difficulties. The only issue I had was with hilly terrains where the car seemed to struggle.
Please can you guys help with good Peugeot workshops in Lagos? I want to have them diagnose and perform an overall maintenance on the car because a lot of improvisation were carried out in the course of finding solution to the problem.
Regards.

Congratulations and thanks to Jah for his mercies. Unfortunately I dont stay in lagos and cant help you with such info. But am sure house members would help you get one and when you get there, the number of exotic lions lining up in his garage would tell you you are in the right place + He would definitely own a PP2000.

Ikenna351: For 406, 407, 607,etc.

Please, before you start any of modern Peugeot cars, especially the D9, switch on the ignition and wait for the fuel gauge needle to jump up in the instrument panel before you crank the engine. The system use those seconds to build fuel pressure on the fuel rail. It's very important we do this, especially in first start in the morning or after the engine has sat for more than 1 hour off.

Ikenna

@ Filcast. True talk here, if you come out of this ... and I know you will, one lesson you will do well to take to heart is to be choosy about who you let open your bonnet. Always insist on a Peugeot mech who knows his 'onions'. Just follow all you ve been told and you will be home and dry...
Car Talk / Re: Peugeot: Cars With Attitude! by wisesystem: 7:12am On Jan 07, 2014
filcast: unfortunately I couldn't get back sooner due to poor network etc. The Problem has lead to the burning of my head gasket(according to the mechanic). The leakage persisted whenever the a/c was on and proceeded to burst the pipe (I think carries water from the radiator to the evaporator or so). There are actually two of such pipes but the mecho says one is for the heater or so.the pipes are visible when you open the bonnet and appear to be going beneath the dashboard.
These led to bursting and leakage of some other pipes and constant shortage of oil and finally to the burning of the head gasket.
Now the solution being offered by the mecho is to seal off all leaking radiator pipes, use a new pipe to connect the two pipes I described earlier to each other (he claims this is better than pulling down tghe dashbord and that the only downside is that the heater will no longer function but) and replace the head gasket.
I need to agree to these,at least to be able to get to Lagos where I can seek further assistance.

Wow! really sad news my Brother. However am quite confused with the issues you are attributing your AC leak with ... 'Burnt head gasket'? 'Constant shortage of oil'. Cant see the correlation here. Is your mechanic a Peugeot mechanic? If yes, could he simply scan the car for you using a pp2000? One of the first things I learnt on this thread is not to listen to everything our mechanics say. And if possible scan the car before your return trip.

@ Ikenna, this Bro needs you...

Ikenna351: I left East in the morning and arrived Abuja about 3 or 4 hours ago. As for the fueling, it consumed about 45 litres of petrol from Abuja to Enugu, likewise Enugu to Abuja. Meaning, i spent only N4,500 in the fueling. Note that Abuja to Enugu is about 500 km. Really impressive!

I love my Lions, because they make my trips interesting.

Sorry, am not in Abuja. I travelled and have been busy behind the wheel since yesterday. Lol!

As for your radio issue. Honestly, i have no idea what could be the cause. Of course, what would come to mind is disconnection from roof Aerial. But since you said you have checked and it was connected, then i can't think of any other thing. Unless the radio FM in your Lion was designed to work only in Mars, not Earth. grin

PP2000 should have indicated the cause all those while you have been scanning the lion with pp2000, unless you didn't bother to check if the radio ECU has faulty during Global test.

Ikenna

Welcome back Brother u have been missed. About my car radio, PP2000 actually tells me its ok. Also I only said the antenna connecting to the radio was in place when i checked so I think a disconnection btw the radio and the antenna could still be worth checking. I think I ll take it out and try another radio with the antenna in my car and see, if it still doesnt work then Ill see about changing the antenna if the antenna wire can be pulled out and checked. Have a great day.

filcast: Hello house, I have observed that water collects under the foot mart of the passenger side of my 306.I Suspect it could be from the cooling system but am not actually vast in this area.

In my case it was a result of the AC water hose not fitted properly where it was supposed to dispense water from the AC out, under the car. Realised no water came of from under my car after hours of using the AC, had to access the hose bringing water out of my car by removing the coin box located near the gear and unscrewing the screws that hold the compartment shielding the AC water hose located underneath the gear lever( for 406). But all this would only be necessary if no water comes from underneath your car after continuous use of the AC.
You could also trace the source of the water while the AC is on by feeling for wetness from the foot-rug upwards. If the wetness goes up into your car dashboard then it could be something more complex that the Gurus in the house could suggest. In my case though it was the AC hose which I solved by fitting it back properly with glue, the total cost being two hundred naira.

@ Ikenna, Morn, still waiting for your informed suggestions on what may be the cause of my car radio not able to get local stations or any for that matter. Its been that way since it came. Cheers!

I believe the fuse is located in the BSM, right? You can always get fuse you want from Peugeot used parts shops or even from the new ones.

You were so lucky that your right fog light was intact. Judging from the number plate, one could tell which side that hit the goat. A set of D9 Fog lights cost between 15-25k, depending on the grade (follow come). Unfortunately, they sell them in pairs, not single.

We thank God for everything.

Travelled to Jos for the holidays with my 406 ew7. cool drive for most part of the journey, blessing my choice of a manual drive. Met my albatross just before Forest when on high speed a team of goats entered the high way. Not wanting to brake abruptly for fear of the cars behind me , I slowed down considerable but still ran over one of them. I continued my trip without stopping not wanting any local trouble from villagers who wont understand anything about highway regulations. I stopped at Forest to buy some fruits for my folks and after about 5mins, was greeted by an alarm with the Instrument panel reading COOLANT TEMPERATURE TOO HIGH. I immediately took off for some yards and parked. I called Ikenna and told him what was happening and after a lot of questions , he asked if my fan was working and only then did I realise that the impact with the goat had affected my fan. on Ikenna's advised I ensured I maintained a speed of not less than 80km per hour which landed me home and try with some scares during brief hold ups.
D next day I managed the car to a Peugeot Electrician and against all my fears of replacing my car fan, I ended up replacing only a fuse and my car fan got rolling.

@ Ikenna, the fuse that got burned as you would see in the pictures beneath was marked 40, while the one the Electritian used to replaced was marked 50. when i asked him he insisted it didnt matter but av learnt not to take all the dish out...

My Lesson Learned: Always stop to check your car if you ever run over an animal on the high way , but pls give youself and the villagers some distance.

Ikenna351: On my way to work this morning, at Wuse Zone 1 by Hali brothers, I saw a China blue D9 engulfed in smoke. People surrounded the car, trying to stop the fire consuming the whole car. By the time I got close, the fire was off. The bonnet was open. The smell oozing out suggested it was electrical that got burnt. When I got closer, I peeped. The smoke was coming out from the battery and the BSM (engine bay fuse box) boxes. The rest of the components in the engine bay appeared to still be in good shape, including the engine.

What I could only think of that would cause the issue are wrong connection, rodent activities in the engine bay, etc. Notwithstanding, we should be careful who we give our Lions to fix electrical issues. I observed that some that come from Japanese cars to French cars handle these Lions like the Japs. It's very wrong. Modern Peugeots have complex electrics. If you have been giving your Japanese cars to under Mango trees Auto Technicians to fix electrical issues for you before you switched to Peugeot, please don't carryover such maintenance habit. Euro cars, expecially Peugeot, is not "too cheap car to run" because of their complex electrical systems, including mechanicals as well. If you can only afford the Mango tree type Auto technicians, then please, it would be wise to switch back to Japs. A lot of people have said to me that modern Peugeot electrics don't last beyond 100k km. That once their mileage exceed 100k km, their electrics would start falling apart. But ask them where they take their Lions for repairs, you would shake your head. Mechanicals? Yes, some of those Mango tree mechanics can do a good job on that. But electricals? Is like signing the death warrant of your Lion with your very hand.

What happened to that D9 can happen to any car if there is wrong connection that is that dangerous. But a Japs won't have much to lose. Because it's obvious that the BSI, ECUs, BSM and the wiring harness in that car are gone. For that car to run again, the owner may have to buy a complete BSI kit (BSI unit, engine ECU and Key), BSM and wiring harness in the engine bay. Ask anyone who has suffered BSI issue to tell you how sweet it can be to experience such.

Whatever electrical issue your modern peugeot could have, PP2000 will direct you to the culptrit. Don't cut conners with the mango tree guys, once electrical system issue is the case with your Lion.

Ikenna

Whenever I go to see my mechanic for small fixes I try to pick up chats with other fox owners( Aside Abuja, am really beginning to believe that Makurdi is the next town with a high number of 406 users, you tend to see one fox in every 8cars). Its quite sad to discover how little these guys are willing to know about their lions and just how dependent they are on what our roadside repairers tell them. They just swallow what they are told Hook-Line and-Sinker without understanding anything

Perhaps what really gives me the shivers most time is the way they watch these guys remove and replace their car battery heads when working on these cars and when I try to inform them of the procedure for the removal of battery head terminals, they simply join the mechanics in saying that "that one na for Oyibo people".
Their case is still better because the garage owns a PP2000 which helps a lot, some lion owners in Makurdi still give their lions to mechanics who have never seen a PP2000 and like you said to rewires who don't know anything about the nuances of the Peugeot brand in comparison to Japanese. The strange look i get when I insist on and go over standard battery removal procedure or other small preventive maintenance tips I give them, makes me feel very sorry for them. One asked me why I was changing my radiator coolant yesterday. I told him I was doing so because I didnt know how long the previous owner had used the one in the car and that coolants were not to be used for more than 3years. The guy hissed and said that i loved spending money. How sad.

But these days my Mechanic is getting to take me more seriously though especially after I made him understand that transponders don't espire and also introduced him to the Aerial in D9s also responsible for immobilising lions, not just the COMM 2000, in fact these days he scans my lion for me free.

Well thanks to Ikenna and other house members for the efforts. Its been truly beneficial here
