You are still making the same stupid excuses. I have answered him. There is no multiple taxation if you cut out NURTW. Uber, taxify, bolt etc don't share revenue with NURTW. As a senior Associate of Pwc, his swot analysis would have shown him he does not want a business model that includes NURTW. If your driver's drive properly, there'll be no property damage. If your driver's mind their business, no one will harass them. Private companies own plenty staff buses that ply our roads, as long as the driver's remain professional, they never deal with NURTW or any harassment you are imagining. Talking about salaries and overhead, make he establish the business for USA without dealing with salaries and overhead na.

I also wonder why his SWOT and PESTLE analysis did not reveal the toxicity and competitiveness in the sector to him.

And to think say na millions them go charge to help you prepare a business proposal undecided

Yes the business environment in the country is nothing to write home about but many are still standing strong and many startups are comming up with innovative business models even in the already saturated and competitive transportation sector.

Some people just go school to be smart fools. How can you not know that transportation sector in Lagos is very very competitive. Uber, Lagbus, Lagride, Bolt, and a host of others that started and crashed. How can you not know and you say do SWOT analysis. SWOT kee u there. Remain in New York working for your bosses cos you are not an entrepreneur.

You took it out of my mouth bro, A senior Associate for that matter undecided.
Even a fresh graduate know that a feasibility study would have shown the competitive nature of the industry and the SWOT analysis would have clearly shown the startup strengths and what opportunity is available not to talk of the threats which abound in the sector in a metropolitan city like Lagos.

To have even admitted doing some miscalculation in the SWOT analysis for your personal startup says a lot about his competency.

Every business comes with its own risk and each country has its own peculiarities.

But our Government needs to make the business environment more suitable for startups and existing business.

They just said it so it seems like people have other options.. How DSTV has no rival in Nigeria after all this Year's still baffles me.

OfCourse i am aware it just a marketing gimmicks, reason i tagged him to provide such FTA Stations which is affiliated to DSTV.

Its really unbelievable to think no investor is bold enough to give them a run for their money. Only If Hitv directors were not so self centered.

Well, thank so very much, bro... I've just finished paying on my phone now: DA and DL. In general, I was taxed 7.5% (after they deducted CRA).

To escape that woman, I believe God gave me the wisdom to go back to the head office and ask any random worker there to explain to me how the remita process is done. Thankfully, a man I met just asked me to bring my phone and ran through a sample of how it's done within 5 minutes nor less. It's so simple. Some other states are also on the web.

I could tell the woman wasn't happy I learnt the process (trying to hide it before), cos she could have easily inflated it and eat something—she was still almost insisting and begging to help so that I wouldn't make mistakes even before I left...

All right...

God bless...

So true to your words.

Hi bro... Compliment of the season... I hope you're well.

So, I'm planning to go there by Friday or lastest next week. Yes, DA is what I need to do not PAYE. In fact, I think I'll go back to the first office which is closer to my family house, as I'm not sure I'm interested in the last branch they directed me to the last time (cos it's closer to my temporary place).

Ok, understood. It's fine to get them involved but does that mean it's compulsory that they help me pay as I perceived the last time?

And I think they have an rrr (remita) system that I can use to pay online—the woman I met didn't seem very willing to tell me full details of how to go about it, perhaps to make me dependent on her and stuff...

But this time, should I try to insist on the rrr process or get the service account details as you said about PAYE process?

Please let me know if I've missed something with the plan...

Thanks

Same to you bro.

@Bolded, No, the officials will only guide you on the amount payable as tax after filling in the details of your earnings.
Once you know how much you need to pay, you can proceed to pay directly to the service account.
Some state service are not on Remita platform so you may not be able to generate a RRR. Rather ask for the designated bank and proceed to make your payment.

Oh, thank you so much for the detailed info. sir.... When I go back in January I'll tell them I've spoken with experts and I only need the form/service account details to pay by myself.

Please, about deductions, I was only aware of expenses/cost of operations through the year (like data, equipment bought, etc) which you didn't mention. Or is it part of what you called consolidated relief or you forgot to mention expenses?

In fact, first time I've heard of consolidated relief, thanks—so now I understand it to mean I'll deduct 200k + 20% of the taxable sum.

Phew... The tax workers only focused on my source of income, the sum and bringing cash to them which I wasn't eager to do. Nothing about deductions...

Yes i did not mention that because it is expected that you would have taken that into consideration as they are expenses you incurred in getting the income, so it is expected that you will need to deduct those to know what your income is.

Again do note that the consolidated allowance is used when you are going the PAYE route. You are allowed the consolidated allowance as a relieve on your income.

For DA, you will need fill the form A to determine your taxable income

Oh, thanks you very much sir... I got the TIN from the state board earlier this year due to a job offer. I've not contacted firs in any case.

Ok, now I understand I've got no business with firs as a self employed (working solo).

I'll try to do as you said in Jan. I think the percentage is around 7 -12% from the samples I saw (200k = 14k; 3m = 350k).

About relocation, yes, I have other reasons. I seem to always struggle with mobile networks, no other options, that's why it maybe worth it... Some said Lagos and Ogun. Maybe Ogun is possible for me.

Thanks for taking your time...

God bless

Ok, it is now clear that you have to deal with the State inland revenue board.

@ the bolded, except you are talking of Direct Assessment, for PAYE, it is progressive.

if you want to calculate it yourself,
- you sum up what you get per annum,
- Deduct Consolidated Relief of N200,000 plus 20% of Earned Income
- If you have any pension, life assurance or you pay for NHF, you deduct that too.
- After deducting all the above, then you are left with the taxable income.
- You now apply the tax rate:
First 300,000 7%
Next 300,000 11%
Next 500,000 15%
Next 500,000 19%
Next 1,600,000 21%
Above 3,200,000 24%

for example, if your taxable income after deducting the relieve and allowance amount to 700k, you apply 7% on the first 300k, 11% on the next 300k, then the remaining 100k [700 - (300+300)] will be tax at 15%........

NB: The Direct Assessment would be more appropriate as a freelance, but given the scenario you found yourself and the skepticisms you have, you can go with the above and fulfil your civic responsibility without anyone ripping you off.

Everyone is entitle to his or her opinion and one can do that without being insulative or using derogative words. We can all be civil you know cool.

Back to the topic, there is what we call tax avoidance and tax evasion,
Evasion is the one that is seen as a criminal act and punishable by law, Avoidance is looking at the loopholes in the tax law and taking advantage of it which is not a criminal offence.

For you to be comfortable with Google taking your 80k monthly and remitting same to the US government to better the life of the US citizen and so not willing to perform your civic responsibilities in the state of residence for the betterment of the citizens there speak volume sir.
I tell you sir if Google can take 80k as tax, what you need to pay to fulfil your civic responsibility will be only a fraction of that amount.

Oh, hi bro/sis... Sorry I missed this. Your type of comment was why I asked the question.

In fact, I was beginning to get discouraged when I realized the kind of questions they were asking—which I think were not necessary. I surely don't have money to throw around, and I did give them that impression.

Right, I'm not sure I can trust them, so I told them I would confirm from those with experience first. And that I may or may not come back cos I may prefer firs online. But according to you and all, I guess I'm stuck with them now.

I hope God help me to deal with them in January anyway. I've been planning to relocate due to network struggles and all for months now, maybe I'll prefer a state with active online portal that I can pay from home without trouble . Please, if you know any do recommend.

Thanks a lot...

Cc withx

As earlier said, you have noting to fear or worry about, I already suggest what you need to do to cut them off completely while still dealing with them.

You are performing your civic responsibility voluntarily.

Let me make it simple for you

- From your first comment, you have a TIN number, this i am quite sure you got from FIRS (considering you prefer online processes)
- What your partners (those who contract you) may want to see is the evidence that you are not a TAX defaulter. This depend on if you are working solo or you registered as a business.
- For the later you need to show evidence that your business is tax compliant and with that you will need to deal with the FIRS using the TIN you registered earlier. (However, you still need to pay personal income tax as an employee of the company, that will now take you to making PAYE remittance to the state).
- For the former you need to file for Direct Assessment (DA) given that as a freelance you are under the category of Professionals. However, given the current circumstances, you can not do a DA without getting the official involve (as even LIRS that is online do not have the Form A for download on their website) as you will need to a form where you will declare all your earnings).
- However, considering your reservations, for your personal income, you can remit your PAYE, use this calculator https://www.smepayroll.com.ng/calculator/tax or as suggested by @ Onegig. What matters are you are doing it rightly with a clear conscience.
- After calculating what you need to remit, get the service account details and make your remittance. take the teller to their office, they will give you an official receipt. Most state service have dedicated banks with specially designed teller, on the teller you will have option to put your TIN number.

- On relocation, except if it is for some other reasons, it not worth it for the singular reason of income tax. Even if you relocate today, you still need to remit your 2023 income tax to the state you are presently as long as you stayed there for at least 183 days.

Well, I wasn't comfortable with the way a tax worker was not willing to share details of the portal/remita or something I could use by myself. Quite insisting to help where I wasn't willing to be helped. And I should just bring the cash when it's time.

At the bolded, it is actually not their fault as many state IRS do not have functional online portal where someone can do it in a DIY way.

anu3:

So I left there leaving their form behind, as January is the actual time. And felt like trying firs online instead.
As many accountant in the house already pointed out, you will only remit to FIRS if you are paying as a registered company which in any case you still have to calculate what you presume to be the salary you get from the company and remit the accruing tax to the state IRS.
In all you still have to deal with your state revenue service because of the residency rule as someone earlier pointed out.
You can do a search on your state revenue service you may be lucky they have an online portal.

anu3:

Someone was also saying I would pay for "development fees". So maybe they thought I was there looking for an opportunity to waste money. Cos once you say you do online stuff, it seems to many like it's Yahoo.

Yes Development levy is paid as a one off annual payment, it is about 2k (the last time i paid) for each staff of a company. thus, if it is only you, the dev fee for a year is just 2k (you should confirm from your state revenue service).

anu3:

I will try again in January, and maybe walk straight to the head office where I registered, and if they're not ready to show me the right link, they can call me when they're ready. Or I'll check Firs online...

Thanks

What was the poverty rate in the North before subsidy removal? North was already poverty capital of the world then. You can now imagine what the situation will be at the moment.

In an environment where over 90% are in multidimensional poverty, how do you expect high-end retail shops like ShopRite to survive?

Ask yourself would ShopRite close in Lagos, Abuja, P.H, Enugu, Onitsha or other Southern cities with significant middle class?

Continue finding excuses to cover a festering rot, but no one is deceived.

Why trying to change the goal post. The fuel subsidy removal as well as the high inflation rate are not specific to the North, it is a general phenomenon.

And again I must ask, what is so special about Shoprite?
is Shoprite not offering same service as Sahad store (and other stores) opposite it here in Kano. and till tomorrow still have thousands of those you referred to at the bolded still trooping in and out on a daily basis.

In business what matter is your strategy, no one cares about your multinationalism especially for groceries. Shoprite Kano changed their business strategy along the line and other stores capitalize on it, thus they fizzle out and can no longer compete.

The only thing i will like to add is once you calculate what is due (you can use any of the tac calculator already posted), depending on your state Inland revenue services (as most do not have online payment option), get the service account details and the collecting bank, then proceed to pay to the bank (this will eliminate your fear of them cheating you). Afterwards take the teller to the service office, they will issue you an official receipt.

When the pioneer investors of Shoprite left Nigeria and sold/transferred it to another investor.

Shoprite started offering even more ridiculous prices for majority of their goods. Just a few (soft drinks and bottle water) that are still priced below general market prices.

We also see that at their outlets in Abuja and Lagos. Infact they should change their slogan (Why Pay More) to something else.

I strongly don't think the exit of shoprite from Kano implies that the Economy of Kano is terrible.

Exactly. their patronage they enjoyed then was largely due to their low price strategy they adopted.
Immediately they deviated, patronage dropped, plus the traffic at checkout.

ShopRite is a private sector investment, not charity organization.
Likewise other business still surviving the same kano. No one is in business for charity.

SSFeedsNigeria:

They were forced to increase prices because Tinubu removed subsidy and they suddenly realized they can afford expensive diesel on turnover marginal profits, worse still, worsening poverty in Kano made it impossible for them to maintain volume sales. With much fewer customers, high diesel costs and high logistic costs of moving their goods from South to North, they found themselves operating at a loss. So, they did what every reasonable investor will do and that is to close shop and move elsewhere.

But other businesses such as Sahad stores are also affected by the bolded yet they are still waxing stronger and opening new stores around Kano. Even after being faced with same economic realities others were able to still sell at reasonable price less or close to general market price. A new store is even opening right opposite where shoprite is located which incidentally is besides Sahad Store, that should tell you the business is thriving.

SSFeedsNigeria:

The fact that ShopRite can't survive in Kano, North's most viable city is an ominous sign. Other investors will also flee Kano and only Musa kiosks and roadside shops will remain.

There are still thousands of investors thriving on the large market size opportunity presented to them, as i said earlier, its just about the business strategy. Knowing what works for the local market and adopting same to survive.

SSFeedsNigeria:

North's economy is dying and that's the painful truth.

If you had say purchasing power is low going by current economics realities i will agree with you 100% but North economy dying, NO

Thank you. Big shopping malls arent a northern thing. The northerner would snub a shoprite for sahad. I was surprised that shoprite carried out that ill advised move of rolling out in kano in the first place. Kano people in particular and northerners in general dont care about posh ambient malls that are dotted with lewdly dressed, young girls chewing gums and clutching iphones. To them culture comes first.

Kano Shoprite branch got it wrong when they start selling their goods above market price (that is a red flag). No matter how posh your shop is many rational buyer talk more of the north will prefer buying where the good i even one naira less. With many supermarkets springing up everywhere in Kano now, its fight of the survivals
Some two years back the place is always overcrowded because customers get some of their goods cheaper than the market price (surprisingly, the difference in price may just be fie naira or a little below that).
I remembered taking the trouble to go to the store anytime i want to stock up on drinks because then their drinks are always around ten naira to fie naira lesser than the market price. Then you will see drink retailers storm there with pickups on daily basis. I can no longer take that trouble if i can get the drinks at a price cheaper close to me.

I believe their change in business strategy have a large part to play.

You have a valid point, but you only make conclusion without trying to know the fact.
Yes its heard that Hisba do confiscate alcohol, but what you don't know is Alcohol is not totally banned in Kano just like other northern states. The issue is alcohol sale and consumption is banned within Kano metropolis but alcohol is openly sold and consumed in some areas. Go to Sabon gari area, you can drink yourself to stupor. You only need one either the PWN (which is cheaper) or the MPPT. However that 60amp he quoted for the MPPT is too large for your system except you plan to upgrade the system in future, 30amps will do just fine.

Disclaimer, I am not a solar installer just a DIY enthusiast and my system (2.5kva) which i set up two years ago is still up and running giving 24/7 power supply.

With the system I use my deep freezer (300ltrs) and washing machine during the day only, casually use my iron, Tv (LED) up until 11pm and three bulbs and two fans till day break.

The unit comprise of

2* 220 amp 12v batteries
3* 200watt Panel (I added a fairly used 250watt paned just last month)
2.5kva sine wave inverter (not sachet)
30amp MPPT charge controller

All including wires, screw and tapes (excluding the panel i added last month) cost me approximately 560k. No installation cost as it was a DIY from start to finish

Yes, same Geegpay will do it. If it's a family member, tell the person to ask around in the UK, there are apps that can do this.

Thanks

You and your brother need a form of insurance payment thats he will not work for nothing like an escrow. Also, open a virtual US account with Geegpay, they can send his money to the account(if the job is legit) and you simply send the naira equivalent to your Nigerian bank account on the same Geegpay within the same day.

Pls is there any app one can use to receive UK pounds which can also allow converting to Naira
