The University of Abuja has lost accreditation in 14 out of its 45 courses, according to official documents seen by Daily Trust. The university’s director of Centre for Distance Learning (CDL) Professor Siyan Peter has been removed and replaced with Professor Odumuh Theresa. In a press conference on April 10, 2016, the Vice Chancellor Professor Michael Adikwu denied that the university has lost accreditation in key disciplines, hiring of 200 workers illegally and also denied that the CDL director was under probe over alleged diversion of funds only to remove him on the day his denial was published on Monday last week. The university’s deputy registrar information, Waziri Garba also denied the allegations in a letter to Daily Trust published on April 15, 2016. After these denials, the vice chancellor contradicted himself yesterday in an interview with Daily Trust where he said by the time he took over, most courses were not accredited and those that were last accredited were as far back as 2005 and 2009. On CDL director, he said he was sacked, saying “we didn’t send him away because of corruption… the only accusation was that there is a charging that is going on,” he said. On recruitment, he said: “We recruited at various time, some were not by this administration, but they were only regularized, they were given what is called month to month basis (temporary) appointment and now what we did was to regularize it after two years they are now given what is called confirmation of appointment.” The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has told Daily Trust it was not part of the process where the university converted casual staff to permanent staff as claimed by the vice chancellor. The National Universities Commission (NUC) denied the accreditation as a result of 2014 audit of academic courses, an official document has shown. The document, containing the status of all courses offered by the institution, showed that only 14 were fully accredited while 21 were given interim approval by the NUC and only 10 have full accreditation. Courses that were denied accreditation by the NUC are Microbiology, Chemistry, Law, Mathematics Education, Integrated Science, Geography Education, Economics Education, Chemistry Education, Biology Education, Agricultural Education, Philosophy, Linguistics, English Language, and Accounting. It was gathered that the courses were denied accreditation due to low staff strength, staff / students’ ratio and facilities such as classrooms, libraries. The 21 courses with interim approvals are Business Management, Arabic Studies, Christian Religious Studies, History, Islamic Religious Studies, Theatre Arts, History Education, Social Studies, Chemical Engineering, Civil Eng, Electrical Eng, Mechanical Eng, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Economics, Geography, Political Science, and Sociology. In a letter to the vice chancellor dated March 26, 2014, NUC said the institution has been banned from admitting students into courses that were denied. The letter signed by the deputy executive secretary of the commission, Professor C. F. Mafiana said interim accreditation is valid for two years and that programmes with interim status would be denied accreditation after two visits. He said full accreditation is valid for a period of five years. Source at the institution said the vice chancellor removed Peter as the director of the distance learning centre following the interim report of the committee constituted to investigate the alleged fraud. An official document shows that 201 staff have been employed by the vice chancellor. A breakdown of the employment showed that Benue state where the vice chancellor hails from had 33, Edo where the pro-chancellor of the university hails from had 8 and Plateau where the institution’s registrar is from had 10. Further analysis of the recruitment showed that Abia state had 5, Adamawa 3, Akwa Ibom 4, Anambra 9, Bauchi 3, Borno 3, Cross River 2, Delta 7, Ekiti 2, Enugu 5, FCT 7, Gombe 4, Imo 8, Kaduna 5, Katsina 3, Kebbi 1, Kogi 19, Kwara 5, Nasarawa 10, Niger 2, Ogun 2, Ondo 3, Osun 5, Oyo 10, Rivers 6, Taraba 1, and Niger 1. Analysis of the document shows that nobody was recruited from Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Jigawa and Sokoto states. In its reaction, the Federal Character Commission (FCC) said though University of Abuja obtained approvals for recruitment of some staff, there is no evidence to show that some of the staff recruited were casual employees. The Special Assistant on Media to the FCC’s Executive Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu Idris, told Daily Trust on phone that the FCC was not representated at the interview to convert the casual workers to permanent staff. 1 Like |

I don't support exam malpractice, I believe in working hard, but if you would set the standard so high it should be in all ramifications, lecturers that do not teach effectively should be expelled!!! Lecturers that makes learning uncomfortable for student should be expelled!! Students that are with soundness of mind should be given questionnaires about their lecturers, such evaluation should be used to expel or suspend lecturers, either for a semester, a year or indefinitely!!!! |

I'M JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS. After some days away from school, I reported back to campus today to see a notice pasted at the entrance of Mini Campus, Opposite the Post Office at the main gate. I was overwhelmed with sympathy. I took on the shoe of empathy, then, the confusion took me up like a garment and the pity of tomorrow engulfed my feeble mind. I wondered what would be the nature of Nigerian communities at nearby future. Oh! 54 students were expelled just like that in a day? The result of 4 or 5 years in this hot Gwax would be expulsion? Does that mean no other means to punish students than expulsion? What do you think would be the fate of such Youth in this fidgeting country? After years of thunderous rain! After years of scorching sun! After years of frightening storm! After years of freezing harmattan! After squatting in a room with other 10 squatters in a room meant for 5 students? After jumping through Shuttle's Windows just to meet up with test or exams in Psite! The man finally becomes hopeless and useless to himself. If a youth is thrown out of school because of misdeed? Who will now orientate or chastise the youth to be a conformist? Have they forgotten that frustration might lead to aggression? And aggressiveness could born rascality? If Nigeria University Commission does not know, this is time they should know, a student that is thrown out of school for malpractices will either become a vagabond around Campuses or even become a dreadful miscreant in the extended society. We are just trying to breed more criminals in already dwindling terrain. I'm only suggesting that suspension' punishment or payment of fines as punishment might be of help than forcefully making people to be hopeless. Hopeless situation leads to frustration, a frustrated person becomes touchy, a bellicose individual becomes a deviant. Then, the crime rates continue to fly higher. I don't support examination malpractices, but I'm supporting other punishments apart from expulsion. Expelling students can only proliferate the numbers of youths' criminality in Nigerian society. witty. |

Strike Update: SSANU
shuns meeting with
Labour minister.
THE Senior Staff Association of
Nigerian Universities (SSANU),
on Monday, shunned an invitation by the Minister of
Labour and Productivity, Chief
Emeka Wogu, over the ongoing
nationwide strike of SSANU,
the Non-Academic Staff Union
of Universities (NASU) and the National Association of
Academic Technologists
(NAAT), which formally kicked off on
Monday across
universities in the country. After the
meeting between the Secretary to the Government of
the Federation (SGF), Chief
Anyim Pius Anyim and the
three unions failed to resolve
the crisis, the unions declared that a
seven-day nationwide strike would commence on
Monday in all the federal and
state universities across the
country. In a swift reaction, the Ministry
of Labour sent a letter to the
University of Abuja, Gwagwalada headquarters of
SSANU, inviting the union to an
emergency meeting with the minister on
Monday. But neither the SSANU
President, Comrade Samson
Ugwoke nor his representative attended the meeting. When contacted
on phone by
Campus Guide, Comrade
Ugwoke confirmed that the
letter got to him but added
that he was out of the office before the letter came. However, he
stated that he
could not attend the meeting
because SSANU was the only
union invited out of the three
unions involved in the struggle. Meanwhile, the strike , on
Monday, paralysed academic
activities at the University of
Ibadan (UI). The gate at the main
entrance
to the university was shut to vehicular traffic, while
students, who are writing their
second semester examination,
had to trek long distance to their
examination venues. The strike led to the
postponement of post- graduate examination in the
university’s Faculty of
Education but the examination
held in the Department of Sociology,
where arrangements
had been made to fill the gap created by the striking
workers. The chairman of the
university’s chapter of SSANU,
Mr Wale Akinremi, in an
interview with journalists,
explained that the strike was called to protest the non- implementation
of the 2009
agreement between the
Federal Government and the
union. He added that the “illogical and
unscientific” recommendation by the Babalakin Committee on
the needs assessment of
universities that non-academic
staff in the universities be trimmed also
informed the
strike action, adding that it was unreasonable to
contemplate sack of workers
with the gloomy outlook of the
nation’s economy. “Virtually all state
governor
have done the financial implementation of the
agreement, while the Federal
Government which signed the
agreement and made its implementation
optional for
state governments is dilly dallying. “The committee’s
recommendation is obnoxious.
I can speak for the University
of Ibadan, where even with the
recent employment by the
university, we are still grossly understaffed. You cannot work
in this university and say you
will close at 4:00 p.m., I don’t
know how many workers
afford that luxury,” he said. NASU
chairman, Olusola Fatoki Cole, while addressing the
workers, who assembled at the
main entrance to the
university, said workers could
no longer afford to wait endlessly for the
implementation of the agreement which the Federal
Government promised would
be factored into the 2010
budget but did not. “This calls for a
serious fight
between us and government. When we come back in January
descending on the Federal
Government, Nigerians will see
the kind of leadership we have in Nigeria.
In 1999, there were
three children of governors in U.I But I do not think there is
any in the school now. And this
is a first class university. They
now send their children to private
universities abroad. He decried the
nonchalance of the Federal Government to the
well-being of workers, saying
that the peace meeting called
at the instance of government
to make the unions shelve the strike did
not yield fruitful results. |
