Oga Jasper,
My brother there's a big reward in taking a bolder step to do what others have no gut to do.
I bless d day I decided to move from agiculture into Agribusiness.
My only advice for everyone is to go all out and break a fallow ground. Dont be afraid to take that bolder step.

Welldone sir,

I have being following this thread and some other threads on AgroBusiness, such as threads created by Magnam (water melon) Okine4real(oil palm), Legsupnigeria, jasper and you.

Am eyeing going into plantain farming this year, which am going to interplant with vegetable and water melon in either Ondo or Ekiti State.
Here are my questions, sir

How many time will one harvest in a year?
According to what I envisage, and also which a
farmer told me, after the first harvest one will be
harvesting plantain every four months because as
the main one grows young suckers will be growing
as well with maturity/fruiting period of
approximately 4 months interval.

How will one cub d menace of monkey in plantain farm

Another thing I want to be sure of is how to control wind

How many worker (permanent) will one need to work on 10 acres of plantain plantation, and how mush do you suggest I can pay them as salary

How possible is it to get an acre of land for not more than N50,000 in either Ekiti or Ondo State

What is the rough estimate of the amount (in naira) that will successfully nurse 10acres of plantain to fruiting, including the cost of the land (N500,000 if at N50,000 per acre).

I have known some things about marketing and am still going to do more research on that, atleast b4 fruiting.

Am expecting ur comprehensive answers, sir. Thanks. God bless you, God bless farmers. God bless Nigeria. Agbe lo'ba lojokojo!
My brother this is serious I doubt if you can till plant this year because you should be doing land clearing by now not talking about land that you haven't seen talk less of buying having said that here are the answers.

Depending on your sucker if you use Cameroon Giant Hybrid Suckers You will start harvesting by the 9th till 12th months of the first year of planting.
It's possible to harvesting 10 times in a year because your 10 acres can never be 100% uniform.

I don't know anything about land because I don't sell or lease land.

Have never witness monkey in plantain farm before but if you have such buy dogs monkey hate noise but the like making it.

You can plant moringa as wind breakers
Depending on what you want and who will do it for you but no matter how small or rough the farm is you will surely spend some millions of naira for settling up the 10 acres.

Oga World 1,

Well done. Please what is the anticipated harvest i.e the no of tonnes in an acre upon harvest. What is the mkt price for a tonne currently.

Would appreciate your swift response as usual.
If you plant Cameroon Giant Hybrid Suckers You will harvest 95% of the total suckers you planted in 9-12 months.
The no of to be mathematically determined because the size and weight can't be uniform.
Plantain is Presently selling for 45-60k per tonne.

kart042000:
Please i had love you to shed more light on this. I plan planting palm trees, but because of the time it takes "3/4 years" before it starts fruiting, i was advised to plant plantains in between the 7meters distance between each palm and after one year once the plantain fruits i cut them down.

I do know cover cropping improves the soil fertility, but does that mean the plantain at almost 3meters to the palm tree would absorb the soil nutrients?
1. Intercropping with plantain is highly possible
2. You can uproot or kill the plantains, not Cut down.
3. Plantain is an high feeder it will surely absorbed the soil nutrients so you will need to fortified the base with manure.

on ur no 1- irrigation is not d reason for dense population but rather the fruiting. Plantain needs enough sunlight during fruiting.
Good evening Madam,
Can you please enlighten me I seem not to understand what you mean.
AgricultureRe: Get Drip Irrigation/rain Guns For Your Farmland by world1(m): 5:41pm On Jan 26, 2015
innovationafrik:
Drip irrigation kits consist of a roll of pipes with spaced emitters that emits water directly to the root of your crops. Drip irrigation allows you to send water to the roots of your plants with great precision. Plants make use of water more efficiently when they get it through their roots.

Let's take this example. A man who is dehydrated and needs water urgently, which is more efficient, pouring water on his head or getting water into his veins? Veins of course, this also applies to plants and that's what drip irrigation does.

With drip irrigation, you can reduce labour hours needed and cost of fertilisation. A turning of a tap can irrigate hectares of land all at once and you use 40-70 percent less water (ain't you saving the Earth). You can also mix your fertiliser and other nutrition in the tank and pass it to the roots of the plants through drip irrigation, you must be trained to do this in order not to kill your plants, its called Fertigation. With fertigation, you will use less fertilisers.

Because drip irrigation does not splash water on the crops, you will greatly reduce Fungi infections and the Bees will not be disturbed.

Do you have small or large plantation of Plantains, Banana, vegetables, Cocoa, Cashew etc, I can install drip irrigation for you at a very low cost, with fertigation you may get over 20 percent more yield.
