Plantain is one of the most important staple that feeds the world. Plantains are treated in much the same way as potatoes and with a similar neutral flavor and texture when the unripe fruit is cooked by steaming, boiling or frying. 1 Like

Now that you have a land for your plantain plantation project you need to clear the land are there 2 way to achieve that. Manual Clearing or Mechanized Clearing. Any type you choose is okay just make sure it's well cleared. Loamy soils are the best producing soils because they contain a good organic to inorganic ratio. Organic materials, such as decaying plants and insects, provide soil with air, nutrients and water-retaining matter. This combination of ingredients, when combined with mineral particles, allows soil to remain loose and fertile. In tropical rain forests part of Nigeria, organically rich soils are shallow. Plantains will thrive for one to three years but then die back because the layer of organic matter is easily depleted. To avoid depletion, it is necessary to provide soils with compost and mulch. 1 Like

Olupi:In 2007, when i was doing my permaculture certificate in Techimae i was posted to work with the government of Ghana on the “Greening Ghana Initiative.” As part of Ghana’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the government of Ghana mobilized environmental NGOs and farmers from all around Ghana to plant seedlings along roadsides, in the middle of farms, and in busy marketplaces. Many people were inspired by the message that the program was getting across - that we need to plant more trees and cut down less. The benefits of planting trees and keeping forests intact far outweigh the benefits of cutting down forests and continuing on the same path Ghana has been following. But 7 years later, the discussion of the environment has all but left the national conversation. The big questions are: why did we stop talking about the environment in Africa most expecially Nigeria?. |

This are what plantain like and dislike. If you want them to be happy! Plantains like: 1. Rich, dark, fertile soils. 2. Lots of mulch and organic matter. LOTS. Just keep piling it on. 3. Lot of nitrogen and potassium. (Chicken manure!) 4. Steady warmth, not too hot and not too cold. (Plantain are sissies when it comes to temperatures...) 5. Steady moisture, in the ground and in the air. But Plantain dislike: 1. Strong winds. 2. Extreme heat or cold. 3. Being hungry or thirsty. 4. Being alone and exposed. Plantains, thrive in tropical regions. Warm temperatures, bright sun and adequate moisture create optimum growing environments. Tropical soils, however, are not always suitable for plantain production.

Plantain is very easy to cultivate and maintain unlike other cash crops. it’s a low capital requirement farming business. Almost every Nigerian soil is good for the plant as experience has shown contrary to what scientist will tell you. Therefore, if you have any land with loamy soil, you are good to go. 1 Like

Having decide to own a plantain farm the 1st thing you need is land. Please it's not advisable to rent land for your plantain plantation. But if that is the only option available then make sure you can eventually buy the land. 1 Like |

Pavore9:Boss merry Christmas. The main surge is coming. Farm research says Nigerians will be planting over 5 million fresh plantain stands by 2015. Plantain market is huge and readily available but you will enjoy it when you have large quantity and of good quality. For example Mile 12 market in Lagos can take over 15 loads of 9/11 trucks per day the iyalaje of fruits section at the market is called Mama Ibeji (Mrs Dasofujo) she told me that they don't even get stable 1 truck per day and when they get it they aren't fresh again because 70% of it comes from Edo state area. The challenge is that people have not really be doing plantain in commercial quantity. She said Edo State is the largest producer followed by Ondo State. Another challenge is that small holder's farmer can't penetrate such market because of the transport expenses involved so they rather sell to the market women around them. We now have plantain processing companies doing plantain flour and baby foods in Lagos and Ogun state. Not to mention a lot of plantain chips making ventures. So I will say that the market is there but we as farmers need to start doing it right with advance planting techniques and innovative mentainance methodology so we can have plantain 24/7. 2 Likes
