Sat, 6th Jan 2007

A predictable result and, in fairness, with the loss of their keeper a minute after half-time, it was just a question of how many more Chelsea would score.

"First-half, 2-1 the game is open," acknowledged Jose Mourinho. "When we scored the third goal and at the same time, they lose their keeper, the game was over."

That third goal, a penalty from stand-in captain Frank Lampard, gave the midfielder his first hat trick for the Blues.

Yet Lampard should not really have been on the pitch at that time. He should have taking a deserved rest along with some of the other big guns, namely Didier Drogba, Michael Ballack, Michael Essien and Claude Makelele.

"Lampard should not be playing today," revealed Mourinho. "He should be on the bench because he deserves a rest. I always like to have in cup games ammunition on the bench in case things are not doing well.

"Diarra should be playing but he was 40 minutes late for the team meeting so I decided to play Frank, rather than Michael Woods. I thought it was too much for him to start the game with that responsibility.

"In the first-half, Frank was absolutely crucial for us."

With six fired into the Macclesfield net, it was surely expected that one goalscorer would be Andriy Shevchenko. Although that was not the case, his manager was supportive of the under-fire (and under-firing) striker.

"He tried very hard and that's a step forward. It is frustrating for a striker to be in a team that wins 6-1 and is not on the goal-scoring sheet," Jose sympathised.

"In some other matches maybe he just accepts without a fight the moment he is living now. But today no. He chased the luck. He fought hard. He worked for the team. He got a yellow card because, without the ball, he was chasing people and putting pressure on and making it good for the team."

Today, yet again down to one recognised central defender, Ricardo Carvalho, Mourinho was happier with our defensive play.

"At this moment, defensively we are playing better because some players are getting routines of the position.

'Paulo never was a centre back and is getting more routines with the position and at the same time, our defensive line has made a step up so when we defend 15 or 20 metres from our box, we can control because we have fast people."

With John Terry yet to return after back surgery and Carvalho's booking against Aston Villa ruling him out of the Wycombe Carling Cup semi-final on Wednesday, we will be without one single recognised central defender. What choices are there for Mourinho?

"Today we have one central defender but against Wycombe it will be more difficult because we have zero central defenders. Paulo and Essien will play there," Jose explained.

Questioned as to whether this result would answer the recent spate of Chelsea-bashing and, in particular, Mourinho-knocking, the Special One smiled:

"I am laughing quite a lot about it because also in my country was written in a couple of papers: The Dark Moment Of Jose Mourinho.

"The dark moment of my six or seven year career as manager is three draws. It's second place in the Premiership, last 16 in the Champions League, semi-finals of the Carling Cup and the last 32 of the FA Cup. So this dark moment is an enjoyable moment."

Let's hear your pick on this one.

@Manu4laif,

Mind games you say. i might have to crunch it in on you that your so called mind games did do damage to your so called master for 2 seasons successfully.
the question is; where was the mastery all those while ? and what in God's name are you talking about ?
be objective when u say things and stop throwing unnecessary boastful spouts.

now i really miss your not being around prior to man u's games against arsenal and chelsea.
i'd have loved to see the kinda mucus u swallowed.
everything is not about 'beef'. i haven't heard you say Jose is bad at his job.
u say he talks too much, meanwhile anybody can easily gather from here, you talk more than he does !

let this be the game that it is i beg of u.

hopefully, you are not SAF huh

# David Beckham is set to stay at Real Madrid because his family are happy in the Spanish capital, and that's the most important thing. He expects a new contract to be finalised soon.

# Werder Bremen have made Miroslav Klose the biggest contract offer in team history to stay at the club. If he doesn't they'll move for highly-rated Ajax hitman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

# Real Madrid have made a £27million bid for Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo. The news comes after the Spanish giants held an emergency board meeting following their defeat by Recreativo Huelva.

Luis Boa Morte finalizes his move to West Ham after passing a medical.

@babasin,
no nigeria is not the only country.
but like u already mentioned, nigeria is the only crude oil producing country importing the same thing. that should apparently mean something is seriously wrong.
then again, if the economy remains the way it is (which is likely - i do hope for a change but there are no signs yet), some bum will still burst pipelines and some greedy/illiterate people (as some would like to believe) will still tell themselves "nothing dey happen" and go scooping petrol.
what happens next is pretty obvious, fire disaster.
TravelRe: Another Fuel Blast In Lagos: by wormedup(m): 10:43am On Dec 28, 2006
@oje,
why was there shortage in petrol supply all of a sudden ?
i think u have an idea of who should answer that question; the victims ?

@getleone
gentleone:
look, these people were desperate!
desperate to make a living or to die ?

gentleone:
i'm not trying to make an excuse for them but i can assure you that a fire disaster was the last thing on their mind.
sister, succeeding every pipeline damage and scooping of petrol in nigeria is a fire disaster. this is not the first and i hardly think it's going to be the last.

1.Chelsea never really had the pedigree.The whole world knows that the last 2 seasons have been achieved because of money and all that glitters ain't gold
now that chelsea's behind man u would u say the money's no longer there huh
TravelRe: Another Fuel Blast In Lagos: by wormedup(m): 3:56pm On Dec 27, 2006
1. asides the pipeline damaging from lifespan effects, i don't think it's a common thieves' job.
u do not puncture a pipeline when it's transporting gas; so on that note i'd want to believe someone actually knew when the pipes were not serving.

now the poor people should know better.
we've had case like this before now and i've come to notice a trait :
a) there's always a report of the pipeline vandalizing.
b) nobody does anything about the trespass.
c) there's always a fire outbreak thereafter.

now i don't want to believe i'm the only one to notice this, so there must be a whole lot of us out there.

2. if anyone can afford to buy a car and fuel it at 65 naira/litre, i don't think the person will be so intelligent to scoop fuel from a burst pipeline.

3. @walelead,
believe me, that vicinity alone have enough policemen to take care of the security around there. i'm yet to see a checkpoint in lagos that has less than 5 policemen and you don't need to bother asking me how many check points there are in that region.

like i'll always want to believe, "there's always a cause".
