The ongoing battle involving Russian Art collector Dmitry Rybolovlel and Swiss entrepreneur and art dealer Yves Bouvier reached a new height after Rybolovlev filled a $380m lawsuit in Manhattan. (October 2)

These charges came from two Rybolovlev’s companies with a claim that the bid house assisted what collectors regard as the ‘Biggest fraud in art business history’ as published by Bloomberg. It is the latest of attempts by Dmitry Rybolovlel in a bid to recoup $1bn from Bouvier as first attempted in 2015 when he claimed that he was intentionally overcharged on deals which included the purchase of 38 artwork worth $2bn of which Leonardo's Salvator Mundi sold 14 of the artwork under scrutiny over the course of the century.

Bouvier was accused of buying the art work on a cheap as against what he represented them to be and the figure they commanded which ran into millions. The paper also implicates some members of Sotheby's staff, such as Alexander Bell, Samuel Velette.

Aside the amount being sought in damages, Rybolovlev’s claim is no different than those already being litigated in Swiss court which Sotheby has always debunked any wrongdoing. ‘We will strongly protect the company and its employee against such baseless claims’ and will move the auction house to New York while proceeding with the case the current case in Geneva.

The artwork in question include Gustav Klimt's Wasserschlangen II (1904) which Bovier allegedly bought in 2012 for $112m which he sold to Rybolovlev for $183m in addition with $3.6m in commission and Amedeo Modigliani’s Nu Couche au Coussin Bleu (1917) for which the collector paid $120m with commission fees in 2012.

The biggest bit of the fraud is the sale of Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi to Rybolovlev in 2013 for the sum of $128.7m with a markup value worth in excess of $45m in a private sale facilitated by Sotheby’s.
