Taiwan is the country. They have their own 'government', run their own elections, etc but are not officially recognized and are still seen as part of China. The Chinese government is very serious about the 'One China' stance. Far more than the 'One Nigeris' stance here.
There was also outrage when Obama received the Dalai Lama, that's another part of China called Tibet which is reportedly agitating for seccession.
