Very true. No single race has the monopoly of ideas and innovations. Look through time and history, "World Powers" were very heterogenous in nature. They provided a vista for the congregation of the best minds and talents. Countries are beginning to understand this. For instance, Estonia despite its small size, its drive for globalization is gradually changing its perception and appeal. Heck she even offers e-Residency with quite some interesting privileges. Germany's decision to remove tuition, embrace the English language and open its doors to the world gets an A+ in my book !!! Make i write my german here "es ist sehr gut". |
For those interested in learning the German language and don't really have the luxury of time to attend a formal class, Michel Thomas German Foundation is a great resource. It focuses more on speaking and understanding the language. For me, I am currently using this resource along with the Duolingo application. I've had to listen and re-listen to some tracks. Auf Wiedersehen |

You don't need audit to show mismanagement of funds anywhere in Nigeria, all you need is a bit of common sense. |

I just thought about adding my own contribution. Attached is an excel file, its should be useful for people interested in saving towards studying in Germany. Its not complete but at least it should provide one with an overview of how much needs to be saved and the progress made in savings. |
I seriously don't understand why people fail to realize that animals will always be animals. They would eventually snap at some point. That dog should be put to sleep |
Just a thought. I looks as if the Euro is taking a plunge against the Naira. I looked at exchange rate data for 1 Year from XE.com and since july the Euro's value against the Naira has been on a steady downard trend. Around march this year ex. rate was about 1 Euro = 229 Naira as at today it was 1Euro = 210 NGN. Thats a savings of 19 Naira. 19*8000 = NGN 152,000. So do we say now is a good time to buy and keep against when needed ? |
` salsera:Thanks I read through the ukBA website and tier 2 seems most applicable. However, Justwise's answer seem correct. Thanks everyone |
Kindly pardon my lengthy post. Recently I was searching for a software apprenticeship program as I basically have an obsession for computing and coupled with a burning desire for perfection of my software craft. Fortunately, while scouring the internet for a master to learn from, I found a company in the UK with an advert that explained my situation and offered a 3 year apprenticeship program. Despite my averseness to living or even visiting the UK, I felt this was me the advert was referring to and decided to send the company an email. The company responded to my email and to them I possessed qualities they were looking for. I read stories and blogs of some folks that completed the program and how they transformed from not so cool developers to awesome software engineers. However, it came to the issue of where am I currently? I formed them I was in Lagos Nigeria. They informed me that they had tried sponsoring a non-uk resident for visa once and it was a lengthy and complex process which given their size as an SME was a daunting process. Is it possible for me to obtain a UK residence + work permit here in Nigeria so as to apply to this apprenticeship program? Also what requirements do I have to fulfill ? Thanks |
Can we create a wiki style of thread that answers all common questions new comers ask? |
The past is gone, at best it serves as a reminder of how great we've fallen. Slavery is never justifiable, it destroyed the self esteem of the average black person. However, the black race can't totally wash its hands clean of this great crime. The sad thing is that, slavery continues to this very date. Nothing has changed. Bad governance in Africa over the years has sold our future and our children's children's future. Racism would never leave, until the black race wakes up and leaders become more accountable, committed to education development , elimination of poverty, reduction in corruption. These and more is what would restore back true freedom. We must stop receiving aids from these countries, this stomach infrastructure must end. We sold ourselves to the Europeans for whisky, gin , mirrors and useless items in exchange for our most priced possession, the best and strongest of us. They went on to be used to develop the new worlds. That legacy still continues till today. |

This may sound funny but I'd like to understand how the health insurance works. What happens if a person doesn't fall ill or use the health system during the coverage period, what happens to the insurance contribution made ? Congrats to everyone who got theirs |

kelly4top: You write so much. Are you sure you dont wanna be a journalist? hahaha just kidding. I support your IT dream cos that's what am studying here too. Thanks, working with people from business & non-techie has taught me the hard way to spell things out clearly. It helps both parties communicate effectively. Good to know your studies are IT aligned. Are you running an undergraduate or postgraduate program ? |
I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone that has contributed to this thread, I've learnt so much. I'd like to say a big thank you to all those who have provided insights into my questions. Am deeply and truly grateful, knowledge is indeed power. |
dolpaz: Hello, I will take my time to respond to your question IMO..I'd like to say thank you for taking the time out to read and provide answers to some of my questions. Sorry about my naivety but I'd still like some clarifications 1) Do i have to put in the 24120 Euro all at once ? Can i instead put the money for 1.5 years instead and leave the rest in my mutual fund / Government bond in Nigeria to earn some additional interest, and withdraw from it as I need the money? Or does the block account pay interests? I have a concern with money just sitting idle. |
Please pardon my lengthy post I graduated 2011 basically studying something I had a zero interest in. Since graduating, I've worked in the IT field. I currently work as a developer. I want to go back to school and learn some basics, some advanced concepts and as well get a degree not just for now but for the future too. Some people say in IT it doesn't matter what you study but I've seen a case firsthand of what stopped someone from assuming a director position was his lack of formal education in an IT related field. I've tried applying for Master's programs but the requirement is usually an issue, in terms of undergraduate degree requirement. I was in the social sciences. So I've settled that I'd spend 3 years to bag an Undergraduate degree. I plan to resume next year September or January. This sounds crazy and unfortunately, its a crazy that has estranged me to some people. I've seen some schools in Germany that I would like to apply to. However, I do have some questions that I would appreciate your inputs on. Thanks. 1)For a 3 year program do I have to show proof that I have the funds for my upkeep for the entire 3 years i.e. 650*36 = €23400 ? 2)I earn a modest salary and currently save most of my salary in my Mutual fund account. I do some freelancing and this also helps a lot. As it stands my current savings by March 2015 should be sufficient to show proof of funds for 1 year plus. I currently don't plan on using a sponsor, but if need be can I use a maternal cousin as my sponsor ? He shares and understands my aspirations and he's willing to help fund some part. We however bear different surnames , and he also lives in Europe. Is this a potential red flag ? 3) I would also like to gain a permanent residency status without cutting corners. The requirement is 5 years continuous stay in Germany legally. Is it possible for me to remain in Germany after my program to work ? I believe that opportunity abounds and with God and preparations I should be able to land a job or create a start up. Is this possible ? Thanks for your patience. |
DisGuy: whatever you do choose a warm climate if you will be mostly self employed, chose an islandTrue tuition is expensive in those countries and even my savings wouldn't be enough to pay for a year. Thanks for the advise, I'd also look into Islands. Any one I should pay close attention to ? drumma: H.... lovely post you have there and I must say I just posted my own in the UAE post.Never really considered Dubai, always just imagined it as a large Vegas on steroids filled with Oil money Arabs (No insult intended). Maybe I should consider it though. Heard the weather there could really get seriously hot. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. |
@gel03 Could you provide some tips ? It could help make my exodus easier. Thanks |
Thanks for the response so far, but is my savings even enough for me to secure some form of decent residency ? @Kilokeys Thanks I never liked the UK. For some reason I never liked the Queen either. I dislike the notion of monarchy |
Let me start by stating : 1)The definition of Happiness differs from person to person 2)Not all who decide to leave Nigeria is doing so due to unemployment 3)Not all who wander are lost 4)Money isn't the ultimate for all persons, some prefer the simple pleasures of life Here's my story. Am a young adult and would like to relocate away from Nigeria. My grievances against this country are numerous. However, I am tired of the daily routine of insanity. Am a believer of facts and figures and do not share the sentiment that Nigeria will get better. Looking at the past and coupled with our government's ridiculousness, Nigeria isn't acting serious about change. So I would like to relocate. I work as a software developer. I do have some clients here that brings in some income besides my salary. Also run a couple of online businesses that brings in some cash. I have about $17000 in savings, I know its not much, but would like to migrate so a place that has 1)a functional system/government 2)a merit value system 3)an understanding of the value of human life. Am not to particular about jobs/hustling, all I basically need for employment is stable electricity + high speed internet + access to books. Please what countries can you recommend I move to ? I'd prefer somewhere outside Africa because the same problems plague us as a continent. Thank you |
