LiteratureChronicles Of The Absurd by xkape(op): 6:57pm On Aug 13, 2006
Chronicles of the Absurd by Samuel Kolawole

Introduction

Mr. C tells Mr. D what he heard from Mr. B who got the information from firsthand Mr. A. Soon every body hears about it and the entire country goes berserk (it happens only in my country). But then neither Mr. A or Mr. B is known so people abandon the source and "follow gullibly after the story", which may lack the support of empirical evidence and threaten logical reasoning, the later taking place more frequently.

These yarns are unstable as waters. They wash over the people, recede as quickly and unforeseen as they come. They leave pleasant and not so pleasant imprints in hearts and lives. Fact, fad or fiction, one thing is sure. The absurd lives with us, now and forever more.

   1-Begging for death

There was time when beggars leaped over bridges and plunged into water canals to surface twice as large and white as eggs. They'd talked about bad business and total neglect by the citizens. But the real reason for their predicament was not far fetched. It had started with Miriam Dafeh(Not her real name, nobody knows her real name, nobody knows if she really exists) and a motor park beggar.

It was a bright and sunny day when heads grew hot, sweat licked from armpits, horns blared crazily and drivers shared curses freely. Mariam meandered through the crowd, clutching her handbag close to her to prevent purse snatchers and thinking about how good the day has been. She was slim, flat breasted and light complexioned. Today she was feeling good and light as paper. Her first salary as a chattered street-side typist was tucked discreetly in her bag and she was very much eager to go home and stretch her legs out. She entered a public vehicle and went straight to the backseat beside the window for easy access to fresh air. Her place of work was not too far from home and she'd always trekked the distance but today she felt like giving herself a treat-it was good to do that once in a while.

Soon, the bus was almost occupied and the passengers were complaining of heat but there was no one to receive the murmur; the conductor was busy yelling his guts out in an attempt to drive the crowd into the bus. The driver on the other hand, was playing "lust chase" with a food seller further down the road and would not be back till the bus was ready to move. Profusions of shouts and abuses would alert him

"Where is the driver of this bus?"

"Where did this mad person wander to?"

"Does he want to bake us in this heat?"

"Are we going to spend the whole year here?"

"Are we goats that the driver stacks us together and abandons us?"

Such would be the statements that would fall from their lips and more upon the driver when he arrives. But for him, it was nothing to bother about, it happened almost every time.

The passengers were constantly besieged by hawkers and beggars as they sweltered on in the heat. It was not long before they were hanging out their hands through the windows for "pure" water and cold drinks stitched in nylon bags. Some were handing out crumpled notes to those who pleaded for alms and showed the vestiges of their chopped limbs or engorged eyes to arouse pity. Mariam gave two crisp notes to one who'd no disability but whose stammering tongue caused much empathy. He was a young man and his dress was incredibly filthy. Dry blades of grass clung crazily on his brown knotty hair and his beard dangled like ropes around his jaws. The lunatic beggar's eyes were red and hunger filled but focused on Mariam. His madness didn't exempt him from suffering and hunger. He was sober. He’d stretched out his hands and raised his open palms up and had received the damp note before his pleading was consummated -it was painful to hear him speak.

The bus was ready to go. The driver hopped in, struggled with the steering gear for a few moments and switched on the ignition by twisting two naked wires together. The vehicle coughed and grumbled down the slope of the motor park then hit the rush hour traffic after five minutes drive. The heat resumed and people brought handkerchiefs and fashioned their palms into fans. They hurled serious accusations at the driver but the fellow was in no mood to be rude. He ignored them and ordered his conductor to start with the money collection, who without hesitation, moved up and down the aisle, picking up soiled notes and exchanging insults with those who didn’t have change (The exact bus fare)

“You have suffered us this bus and yet you collect money from us” a woman who wore a filthy head scarf said

“Nobody suffered you! The country is suffering all of us!” was the conductor’s direct reply and the passengers spent the next few minutes scourging tongues about their beloved country.  Their confab was rudely interrupted by sudden spasmodic jerks of the vehicle which resulted in a halt. For a few minutes, the driver tried in vain to put the vehicle into gear; he sweated and cursed and jerked the gear stick from side to side as drivers poked their neck out of their windows and tossed dreadful words at him.

The driver suddenly hurried out of the bus then went underneath it. A few seconds later he was back in his seat shifting the gear with his now greasy hands and urging the vehicle to move- he knew his fellow drivers would soon be tossing fists and he was not in the frame of mind to engage in a brawl.  The bus finally gave a screeching sound and jerked back to life-the ordeal left beads of sweat on the poor driver’s forehead

Mariam got down from the bus ten minutes later and was heading for the one room apartment she shared with her best friend. She doubled up her speed and took short routes to arrive her destination in time. She stumbled on the way; a block of concrete hit her foot. It did not hurt her much but she lost the shoe heel of her right leg.  She called the shoe useless and complained of wasting her money. She would have started keeping a good watch over herself if she'd stumbled a few years ago. She’d always held on to the superstitious belief that tripping over was a sign of danger just around the corner. But that was then, now she knows better.

Her roommate was not home. She took off her shoes and undressed. She wrapped a towel over her body, wore her shower cap then picked up a pail to fetch water for bath. A little later she was in the bathroom, a small enclosure made with rust out roofing sheets soaping her unclothedness and singing a tune she heard on her way coming. That was when she saw a man, the lunatic beggar at the motor park. He was standing in the bathroom with her and was as nude as she was. He was smiling; his eyes were no longer red but dark and flashing with excitement. His weapon stood erect as a pole, long and richly supplied with blood vessels. Her eyes popped wide open, whether in surprise or horror it was not to be known. She opened her mouth to scream for help but no words came, she was to enjoy the moment, not scream, but she wanted to scream.

Enjoy the moment

Let the beggar boy have you

Touch his dangling beard

Eat the blade of grass in his hair

Let him have you

Open your yellow thighs wide

Let the beggar in

Mariam opened her legs wide, stretched her arms as though crucified and closed her eyes to savor the moment.

Enjoy the moment

Let the beggar boy have you

Touch his dangling beard

Eat the blade of grass in his hair

Let him have you

Open your yellow thighs wide

Let the beggar in

They coupled on their feet with incredible passion. Mariam writhed beneath beggar boy; she struggled and scratched with her fingernails, yet by no means in horror. She was enjoying the moment; the throes of sexual intercourse, the sweet stench of the lunatic's unwashed body and the coarseness of his manly hair. She wanted the moment to last but it was over before she knew it. Her lover was gone, vanished with the wind. Her pleasure turned into agony, discomfort gripped her down below. She attempted again to scream but nothing came out, just hot air, hot odorous air. She moved her legs but it was heavy as lead. She decided to crawl and again her body felt like a sack of salt. She moved out of the bathroom and groveled in the soil like worm. People spotted her and the alarm was raised

The wind snatched away her life before she reached the hospital but not before sucking out her guts.  The beggar boy had her,  all of her

sirwebs:
Its amazing the emotions this thread has provided. Thanks seun for starting it.

My M.sc thesis is on Nollywood. Even though i don't watch the movies my research so far has thrown up some interesting facts. Nollywood is popular, very popular and a lot of Nigerians and Africans in the diaspora watch them to have a connection to africa. Most importantly Nollywood is purely a child of commerce. It was borne out of the need to cut costs or better still make money. So don't crucify the merchants.

Everybody agrees the plot is trite, production poor, no intellectualism etc but this industry has created thousands of jobs and earned hundreds of thousands of Euros in foreign exchange in the past ten years - without govt. help.

I am not yet converted but they have my respect now.
No offence sir, but these are just excuses for us to continue in our mediocrity while the world leaves us behind

Personally i think the amount of time one devotes to watching Nigerian movies (or WWF wrestling for that matter) is inversely proportional to ones IQ

I knew people would come up with a pseudo-nationalistic justification for this nonsense

This is not governance, this is military- style madness. You just dont put a blanket ban on a company that has invested millions in your economy. If they invest in your economy you cannot grudge them for their profits, they are not a charity organization

There are better ways of dealing with this issue. This is a legitimate company licensed to deal in Nigeria, if u feel they have an unfair advantage adjust your policies to level the field. Charge them a higher tarrif for thier operations and exempt indegenous companies, peg their subscription fee and force them to sublet thier broadcasts to companies within Nigeria. All these done slowly and unobtrusively.

Besides, if one reads the wordings of the statement u see stuff like "colonial" and "challenging the sovereingty of Nigeria". This is the kind of Mugabe-esque drivel that incompetent leadership uses to stir up the emotions of the naive. This is strictly business , no need to bring up your inferiority complex towards South African business. Why dont you ban MTN in the same breath?

There is no smoke without a fire, someone with vested interest is probably pressuring some one in power to deal with DSTV so he can have a monopoly of his own

The plot, the suspence, the dialogue, the technical finese, the grammar, need i go on?

Jeeeeez, If i said this is totally brain-dead i would probably be kicked off the forum so i wont.
I also would like to believe this is an elaborate joke by the author and the excited repliers are also in on the joke *wink, wink *. If this, however, is an honest attempt at writing i would like to believe the author is 10 years old and the readers are toddlers
Foreign AffairsRe: Your Views On Israel And Palestine by xkape(m): 10:55am On Jul 18, 2006
@ ajia23

You seem to have a level head on the issue

However, I have always found this baffling, why dont muslims ever outrightly condemn thier brethren? Only a very few ever do (and these ones i know of are my relatives) There is always justification and rationalization of terrorist acts as the only means left to them to fight.
I personally dont see hamaz or al-queda more terrifying than a stealth bomber dropping mega-death on ur house but al-queda bases what they do strictly on Religious grounds and other practitioners of the religion dont come out to condemn them and defend the religion of peace. The condemnation is in word only, and it is an open secret that the sponsors of terrorist cells all over the world include the government of Saudi Arabi, Egypt, Syria,Indonesia, Nigeria, Lybia etc. They all condemn with thier mouths but support with thier pockets

If you think all this is far fetched , I heard of a group linked with alqueda that had a cell in Ibadan (i havent been there for some time now so i dont know how far). They were recruiting "students" for studies in the ME. I met one of the students who talked of the kind of brain washing they were getting. They were being systematically being filled with hate for all things western and by extension Christians and Jews. There was an incident in Ibadan last year whre a group went on a demontration to enforce secondary school students to wear the Hijab, three school girls where killed in this episode, and this group and others were behind it. Of course it was hushed up in the press as always but I and many others were witnesses

So the issue runs a bit deeper than mossad and the hardliners in isreal or even that freak-show of a religious bigot called Bush and rambling preachers like Rod Parsley. The issue is one of instutionalised hate that the whole world should stop denying
Foreign AffairsRe: Your Views On Israel And Palestine by xkape(m): 8:26pm On Jul 17, 2006
Israel is terrorising the Arab nations for political reasons.
They are killing innocent arab children.
Christians should not support this because this is anathema to what Christ preached.
It may be fulfilling prophecy but prophecy only tells of what will happen, it doesnt cause it to happen or justify the means by which it happens.
American christians especially have dissapointed the world by turning this middle-east thing into a neo-crusade and voting that slowpoke Bush

Having said this, the real truth is, Israel is doing what they are doing to survive, it is the law of nature to do what u can to ensure u r not annihilated. I am not saying this is right but we have all at one time had to stump on other people to get our way
The Arabs on the other hand are acting on pure unadulterated hate. The kind of hate that has not been seen before in any group in the world. The kind of hate that would make u blow ur children up, the kind of of hate that would make someone in Kano not affected in anyway by events in palestine to bury his neighbour in a well in protest (and i am speaking from experience, so nobody should even try to defend them angry)

A peaceful solution could have been found to the ME crisis for decades now just like the two Koreas, like Japan vs China, East blck West Block Europe, White vs Black in South Africa, Spain and the Basque, Nothern Ireland etc etc but there is one factor perculiar to the middle east. A factor that brainwashes children from an early age to hate other people becos they pray different, a factor that causes educated Nigerians to defend murderous activities blindly, a factor that caused people to rejoice on the streets when 9/11 happened. I wonder what this factor is.

Satelite imagery give us a tool for estimating populations we never had before. It is simplistic to think that the estimates are derived from simply looking at the picture with the naked eye and making deductions from there.
Many types of imaging such as heat signature are used and other factors such as water bodies and distance to the sea of also used in the estimates.
The census figures in Nigeria go against every known law of demographics. This is well known in international circles so i don't think we need to argue about how fraaudulent our censii (is that word legal grin) and elections are

@afeni
Deluded foaming-at-the-mouth fanatics like u keep talking about how the brithish gave power to the North in 1957 so they could oppress the south. Read your history before u start spreading myths on nairaland. Power got into the hands of the notherners when Nnamdi Azikwe decided to form a coalition woth the northern block instead of forming one with his bitter enemy Awolowo. He was quoted to have said that even though he knew the wets-east coaliton would have formed a functional government, he decided against it because of personal differences. So if u will blame anybody blame him

@ KAG
Sorry for the long silence, but let us now look at ur link explaining the evolution of the bacterial flagellum

Stage 1
A passive, nonspecific pore evolves into a more specific passive pore by addition of gating protein(s). Passive transport converts to active transport by addition of an ATPase that couples ATP hydrolysis to improved export capability. This complex forms a primitive type-III export system.
How? Why? Gating proteins a very stereo-specific did an excreted protein just luckily get stuck in the pore and form a filter? and there after codons began coding for this protein and were transported to this exact same spot in subsequent generations? this fortuitous happening only giving rise to one location for the binding of the protein? since we know that the flagellum is located at the dorsal portion of the organism becos this is where the motor function is best served. The process in this explanation would have giving rise to flagella all over the organism hence negating the motor function since it originaly developed as an excretory organ. This explanation would have been suited for cilia and not flagella but this same article states that these organels were developed independent of one another?

stage 2
The type-III export system is converted to a type-III secretion system (T3SS) by addition of outer membrane pore proteins (secretin and secretin chaperone) from the type-II secretion system. These eventually form the P- and L-rings, respectively, of modern flagella. The modern type-III secretory system forms a structure strikingly similar to the rod and ring structure of the flagellum (Hueck 1998; Blocker et al. 2003).
Speculative, unfounded. Another example of the obsfucation inherent in the ToE. On the surface all these look plausible but it begs the question of the kind of selective pressure that would induce a protein being added to an excretory system. All we have is speculation and a series of increasingly improbable coincidental events
Is it easier to belive this was a random sequence or a cognate finetuning and development of a complex machine over the eons?

stage 3
The T3SS secretes several proteins, one of which is an adhesin (a protein that sticks the cell to other cells or to a substrate). Polymerization of this adhesin forms a primitive pilus, an extension that gives the cell improved adhesive capability. After the evolution of the T3SS pilus, the pilus diversifies for various more specialized tasks by duplication and subfunctionalization of the pilus proteins (pilins).
Polymerization? Again, mechanism? purpose? These would be possible in a genetic framework that already coded for such reactions at this exact location (has to be becos again, of stero-specificity). But the situation here is of an a-priori organelle, a novel binding site, and a excretory protein that is tailor made to serve the function so conveniently prepared for it

stage 4
An ion pump complex with another function in the cell fortuitously becomes associated with the base of the secretion system structure, converting the pilus into a primitive protoflagellum. The initial function of the protoflagellum is improved dispersal. Homologs of the motor proteins MotA and MotB are known to function in diverse prokaryotes independent of the flagellum.
And this is the lynch pin of the whole theory. Note the word FORTUITOUSLY meaning - since I dont have a reasonable explanation for how this simplified anus becomes an electric motor, let me just blame it on blind luck.
This is where a strawman attempts to beat up another strawman

stage5
The binding of a signal transduction protein to the base of the secretion system regulates the speed of rotation depending on the metabolic health of the cell. This imposes a drift toward favorable regions and away from nutrient-poor regions, such as those found in overcrowded habitats. This is the beginning of chemotactic motility.
More of the same crap. literally.

At this point i got tired of the whole article. Anybody interested can check the link out himself.

http://www.talkorigins.org/indexcc/CB/CB200_1.html

Another astute observation made by the author is this
Eubacterial flagella, archebacterial flagella, and cilia use entirely different designs for the same function. That is to be expected if they evolved separately, but it makes no sense if they were the work of the same designer.
This is an insult on the inteligence of the reader. It is like saying that since there are various designs for Nike running shoes that perform the same function, they must have evolved from loose raw materials in the Nike factory huh huh

In fact i propose an adendum to the theory of evolution. The theory of Archeological Evolution which posits that archeological structures such as the Pyramids of Giza could not have been made by humans but must have evolved through the action of  agents like wind rain earthquakes meteors and such like. grin grin grin

Thanx for the link

But prithee, how does a fruit fly in a banana blown in a hurricane to an island where it becomes reproductively isolated from the main gene pool differ from an aborigine seperated from the larger continent by continental drift.
By the logic so meticulously expounded in ur link, the aborigene should develop speciation different from the main strain of humans
Ur strawman is still alive and well

Christianity EtcRe: Evolution Or Creation: Which Do You Believe? by xkape(m): 10:00am On Jun 09, 2006
nferyn:
Either you don't read the posts in this thread or you don't want to comprehend what they're saying. In each and any definition of speciating I've come accross, a minimal condition for speciation in reproductive isolation. If anyone in his right mind would imply that such a thing is the case among different races of humans, he must be living on mars.
Read the thread from the beginning and you will find them. If you're not satisfied with the examples, explain exactly why they don't met the criterium of speciation or even better, define speciation yourself and explain why your definition differs from the commonly accepted one.
That is just a cop-out cum strawman

Isolation is relative and ve have some examples of isolated populations, Aborigenes of Australia have been for all practical purposes isolated for 40,000 years (or there about) deep jungle dwellers of central Africa and the Amazon can also be considered to be reproductively isolated.
