The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) yesterday put the Nigerian death toll in the Saudi stampede at 274.

Forty four others are still missing while two are receiving treatment in Saudi hospitals, the agency’s Commissioner Planning, Research Statistic Information and Library Service (PRSILS) Dr Saleh Okenwa, , stated this yesterday in Abuja.

Okenwa expressed the determination of the commission to continue to work with relevant stakeholders to account for the remaining pilgrims that died in the stampede.

“ The number of Nigerians confirmed dead in the stampede is 274; those injured and on admission in Jeddah are two, while 44 remain officially declared missing.
“ This was a year that the Saudi Arabia government did their best to ensure the success of the Hajj exercise and safety of pilgrims, but Allah decreed that this will happen,“ Okenwa said.

He said the Saudi Arabian Government had not responded to Nigeria’s request to be part of its committee set up to probe the incident.
Chairman of NAHCON, Alhaji Abdullahi Mohammed, said it is the prerogative of the Saudi Government to decide the composition of the committee investigating the stampede.
He said Nigeria had not received any compensation pledged by Saudi Arabia for the victims of the Sept. 11 crane crash at the precinct of Ka’aba (the Grand Holy Mosque in Mecca).

The Head of NAHCON medical team, Dr Ibrahim Kana, said efforts were being made to find the 44 missing Nigerians using the DNA samples of their family members.
He added that the sample would be collected and sent to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for cross matching of the 44 missing Nigerians.

Niger Delta right activist, Ms Annkio Briggs, said at the weekend that people of the region are yearning for control of their resources, not to break away from Nigeria.
Briggs, who spoke with our correspondent in Port Harcourt, called on the federal government not to misconstrue their demand for self determination for secession, adding that what the people of Niger Delta want is to control their resources and still remain part and parcel of “one indivisible Nigeria”.
She said: “It is not illegal for a group of people to demand self determination. The indigenous persons are recognised by the United Nations.

An indigenous person is someone that has its own distinct culture, language and religion. In the case of the Niger Delta region, who are mainly from the creeks, we are recognised by the United Nations as an indigenous people”.

The Federal govern­ment has been ad­vised not to use force on pro-Biafra protesters, who have been holding series of demonstrations in some states in the South-east, and South-south geo-political zones of the country.
National Coordinator, Ijaw Monitoring Group, (IMG), Comrade Joseph Evah who made the appeal in Lagos at the weekend noted that the use of force would not only be counter-productive but also worsen the crisis.
His words: “I implore the Federal Government not to contemplate the use of force against Biafran protesters. The use of force will ag­gravate the problem. I urge President Muhammadu Buhari to adopt dialogue approach. It is within the ambit of the constitutional rights of people to protest and demonstrate. What these protesters are doing is not illegal as long as they are not violent or take up arms against the state. But it is better to solve the prob­lem now through dialogue before it worsens. It is bet­ter to jaw-jaw than to war-war,” he declared.
On why he canvassed dialogue option, Evah ex­plained: “The use of force will never work. Force can’t work. It is not the solution because history has shown that at the end of the day, it is dialogue that is em­braced as tool of resolution in many crises. A chieftain of Ohane­ze Ndigbo, Chief Ozo Anaekwe has blamed President Mu­hammadu Buhari’s mar­ginalization of Ndigbo in his few months in office for the renewed agitation for Biafra by the members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in the South-east and South-south parts of the country.

Anaekwe who spoke with newsmen in Onitsha, said that Buhari’s utter­ances, policies and actions spurred the agitation by the members of IPOB and MASSOB
“How can you appoint people to govern Nigeria and you ignored Ndigbo with their mammoth popu­lation and contribution to the development of this country? And since Buhari became President, he had never uttered a word or tak­en action that would bring peace to this country. He has not acted like a statesman. He is on a revenge mission. He talks as if he is on a war front,” said Anaekwe.

He said that the protest by the members of IPOB was as a result of the continuous marginalization, intimida­tion and injustice meted out to their people.

Col. J.O.G. Achuzia (rtd) is a for­mer officer of the Biafran Army. Now an elder statesman, he told PAUL OSUYI, in this interview in Asaba that it is time the Federal Gov­ernment recognised that there was once a nation called Biafra.

Excerpts:
Looking back, what do you think has changed between the time you along with others fought the civil war and now?

I am formerly of the Biafran Army and like all those that participated in the struggle, af­ter the pogrom that took place in Nigeria in the late sixties, we thank God that that gru­eling war was over, and today we are trying to fashion a new Nigeria which unfortunately does not seem to click. And I believe that the problem is not a problem of knowledge of how to package the country but greed which is the common human disease that has infest­ed the totality of Nigerian government, that is the problem we are facing at the moment.

You were on the side of Biafra during the civil war, what was the agitation like at the time?
In my days, there were no agitations, events were just happening. First, the issue was not that of the civilian public, it was merely a military problem. The politicians were busy politicking, out of the civilian politicking, the problem of the Western House started which led to a lot of blood letting by civilians in the West, that was around 1963/64. We consid­ered the matter a Western regional political issue as at then. Before that could end, the military who had been to abroad for opera­tion in the Congo came back and before you could say Jack Robinson, a coup took place. The mis-interpretation of the coup because of the Nigerian attitude which continues to persist till today, that Nigerian attitude is eth­nicity. It is because of the ethnicity that has always been at the background that made our Northern brothers to ascribe the coup as an Igbo coup. Mis-management on the part of the military because of inexperience led to another counter-coup that cost the life of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces who in his zeal brought about the end of the coup, and those young officers that carried out the coup were quickly gathered up and incarcerated. All these were the background of events in my days when I was just in my early thirties, in fact, I was just stepping into my thirties.

Can you compare what is hap­pening today, with respect to the agitation, to what happened in your days?

I will say there is a vast difference. Take for instance what happened a few days ago throughout the whole of the South-Eastern region. When I say South-Eastern region, it affected all the states in the South-East, all the states in the South-South. So, it is not a question of Biafra being a South-East problem or a South-South problem. It is the South-Eastern region of Nigeria because Ni­geria was originally on a tripod of South-East region, South-West region and the Northern region. So, you can see that what took place, took us back to what Nigeria was during the first republic. It also has a different col­oration because in the lower part of Benue and Adamawa, the areas in the north bor­dering the South participated, but this has a different coloration. Why I say that it has different coloration is that those who carried out the demonstration which was of course their right because the Constitution says so that every Nigerian has the right to freedom, of association and freedom to demonstrate so long as the demonstration is orderly are Nigerians. The people who demonstrated were from the ages of 40 downwards. The war ended over 40 years ago, that gives you, without much thinking the type of people we are talking about. These were children, half of them were born in Biafra at the time, and their birth certificates say they were Biafran citizens. When the war ended, Nigeria did not address this issue, reasons being that our counterparts who took it upon themselves to manage the affairs of reconstruction, reha­bilitation and so on, made a terrible mistake.

That mistake was that they did not look into the situation that existed because most of those born during the three and half years the war was going on were babies with Biafran birth certificates and exited the country as Bi­afrans. Now they are adults, and as far as they are concerned, where is Biafra?

The Eastern region of the territory called Nigeria. They visited, saw the hostility and things not going right. Based on their perceived knowledge and intelligence, they felt the best thing is to reclaim our territory, maybe we will make it a model for the rest of Nigeria to follow, hence the agitation.

I am from south south, niger delta in particular, but I think it's about time PMB reads the riot act to these miscreants. The beauty of Nigeria as a nation is in her diversity and whoever is blind to this reality needs some education. People should be made to understand the consequences of daring the sovereignty of NIGERIA, when such protest by unscrupulous elements are not met with grieve consequences, it inspires smaller nations to stand up to Nigeria. Shoot at sight order must be given to our security forces to any misguided group or association whose aim is to question or threaten the sovereignty of NIGERIA! Leadership is not all about giving carrot to the people all the time, Iron rod is used sometimes to bring citizens back to their senses.

WHY BIAFRA MUST BE ALLOWED EXIT.

From every indication, it is ascertained that the reason why Nigeria and the British never wanted Biafra to exercise her right to self determination has a fraudulent and a hegemonic undertone. I was born in the early 80’s and up until now, the Biafrans have proven practically that they are the light and the symbol of the Nigerian unity.


Historically, Chief Obafemi Awolowo was apprehended and locked up in jail for suggesting the Nigerian state break-up in the early 60’s. Nnamdi Azikiwe stood in defense of one Nigeria. Aguiyi Ironsi ignorantly in defense of same locked up his own brother Majour Nzeoguw for the 1966 coup which the reward for his kind gesture was a painful assassination.

All these lingered until a continued massacre of the Biafrans across Nigeria that ushered in the Nigerian-Biafra civil war. January 1967, the military leaders and senior police officials of each region met in Aburi, Ghana and an agreement was reached on a loose confederation of regions. The peoples general Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu (Ikemmba One of Biafra land) in his quest for a more peaceful and a continued co-existence accepted without sentiment but the Northerners were at probability with the Aburi Accord; Obafemi Awolowo, leader of the Western Nigeria warned that if the Eastern Region seceded, the Western Region would also, which convinced the northerners to decide their stand in the case. As reconciliation was not reached, on 26 May the Easterners voted to leave from Nigeria. On 30 May, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the military governor of the east, declared the Republic of Biafra, citing the Easterners killed in the post-coup violence.

I quote:“I, Lieutenant-Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria, by virtue of the authority, and pursuant to the principles, recited above, do hereby solemnly proclaim that the territory and region known as and called Eastern Nigeria together with her continental shelf and territorial waters shall henceforth be an independent sovereign state of the name and title of "The Republic of Biafra". The war which lasted for 30 months was led by Britain and other world power with combined Nigeria military force leaving the Biafrans physically and emotionally wounded. After the war, Biafra leaving the butchers desk picked up her remains and continued surviving without being biased and have continued up until now to developing and bringing up ideas that will be favourable to Nigeria as an entity supposedly. Instead of a kudus and an appreciation for their hard work, the reverse is the case.

The Biafrans and their properties is the major target anytime there is a civil-unrest in Nigeria. Pronounced hate languages against them is an everyday occurrence. Many mistake their industrious capability for an act of domination. Many even blame them for leaving their region to come out developing other regions in Nigeria when all these are about promoting a united Nigeria. Many considers; if possible a total annihilation of the Biafrans. They (the Biafrans) have been incited against one another so as to creating a broader pavement via which they will always be manipulated by their haters which is one of the most dangerous and effective divide and rule strategy against the Biafran people for a kingdom divided against itself will never survive.

The Igbo tribe specifically been demonized among others that a fellow Biafran sees his own siblings and cousins as his major problem. Even among the Igbo speaking Biafrans, many have been deceived until some could boldly say; “I am not Igbo” when he speaks Igbo, worships Chukwu-Okike, answers Igbo names and honours Eze/Igwe. All these are as a result of the collective hatred from the British and the other parts of the Nigerian state. Now on a peaceful protest, (unlawful arrest and extra-judicial killings) is been used a measure to curbing the already ill situation and a stupid man will come asking, why considering secession? Nnamdi kanu and co. are kind people with the level of anger they are expressing in this case, one would be worse if the opportunity is given. In as much as no man has the monopoly of violence, any attacked has the right to self defense. “If you directly tells a man that you hate him, he will practically seek away to avoiding you” It is high time the Biafrans should be allowed to go home and build their own Nation which will be extremely favourable to the African Nations at large to avoiding another regrettable situation that the pains will remain for eternity.

The people in this contraption called Nigeria are people of completely different ideologies forcefully merged for selfish reason by some criminals.
