The Siege of Constantinople
Stannis Baratheon’s decision to siege the capital of King’s Landing, an event that became known as The Battle of Blackwater Bay, has some striking similarities with the Second Arab siege of Constantinople that occurred in 717–718, when the Umayyad Caliphate attacked the capital city of the Byzantine Empire.

After various complex episodes involving civil strife, trickery, double-crossings and other duplicitous behaviour, Constantinople’s attackers were defeated with the use of ‘Greek Fire’ a substance (the ingredients of which are still unknown) that could ignite on contact with water, leading to the destruction of enemy ships before they reached land.

In GoT, Stannis and his navy are defeated after being subjected to something called ‘wildfire’ which does pretty much the same thing.

The Black Dinner
One of the most notorious events in GoT history is the brutal, gruesome ‘Red Wedding’ where King Robb Stark, his wife, Queen Talisa, his mother, Lady Catelyn and many many more were murdered during the marriage of Edmure Tully to Roslin Frey.

The massacre was based on two historical Scottish events, and possibly a bit of a Japanese one. The Black Dinner, from 1440, involved the 16-year-old Earl of Douglas and his younger brother being beheaded during a dinner with the 10-year-old King James II.

There are also elements of The Massacre of Glencoe from 1691, when soldiers loyal to King William of Orange murdered many of the MacDonald clan while they were sleeping.

Plus there’s similarities to the Kojiki, an ancient Japanese tale where Emperor Jimmu murders all his political rivals at a feast.

History can be brutal.

Mongol Empire
The nomadic, horse-loving warriors the Dothraki, who rule the vast plains of Essos in GoT, seem to share many characteristics with the Mongol empire that existed in the 13th and 14th centuries across Asia and Europe.

Khal Drogo, one of the most prominent Dothraki rulers, seems to share certain characteristics with Mongol legend Genghis Khan, including executing enemies by ways of molten precious metals being poured on the head (Genghis used silver, Drogo splashed out on gold) and their unspectacular demises (Genghis probably died from an infected wound, Drogo was suffocated after an infected wound left him catatonic).

George R. R. Martin has also admitted that the Dothraki are based in part on characteristics of the Huns, Alans, Turks and even some Native American tribes.

The Roman Empire
But it’s not just that great big wall the Romans constructed that GRRM was inspired by. Various elements of the Roman Empire have seeped into the world of Game of Thrones.

The War of the Five Kings, as well as having War of the Roses parallels, also resembles the year 69AD when there were four potential candidates for the role of Roman Emperor, which led to a brutal civil war, with Vespasian eventually emerging as the victor.

Many classicists have also noted that the scenes set in Essos look distinctly like the Roman Empire, including the gladiatorial looking arenas, the food and even the latrines, that definitely have a whiff of the Roman about them.

And the long vanished city of Valyria in Essos was once the seat of a great empire that brought innovations such as straight roads to the lands they conquered. Though they also had purple eyes and dragons, so you can’t read too much into this stuff.

Hadrian's Wall
George R. R. Martin (GRRM) has admitted that he came up with his giant ice wall creation (imaginatively called ‘The Wall’) while visiting Hadrian's Wall near the Scottish border with England.

Martin’s wall, constructed from solid ice, stretches for 300 miles and is 700 feet tall and designed to keep out the fearsome ‘Wildlings’ on the other side.

Hadrian's Wall, between Wallsend in North Tyneside and Bowness on Solway in Cumbria, was built to guard the north-west frontier of the Roman Empire and runs a slightly more modest 73 miles and was around 20 feet tall at its highest point.

■Game of what?■
Apparently there’s some TV show called Game of Thrones which isn’t a chair-based quiz show at all, but a fantasy epic with swords and dragons and the like. The author of the books that the iconic series is based on, George R. R. Martin, used a whole slew of true historical incidents and characters as inspiration for his dragon-strewn work.
As the final ever season of GoT gets underway, we decided to investigate a few of these bygone antecedents and attempt to sift the fact from the fiction. (It goes without saying, there are many spoilers in this article if you haven’t started watching GoT yet!)

The War of the Roses
Stark? York? Lannister? Lancaster? Come on people! Surely you can see the connection? Taking place between 1455 and 1485, The War of the Roses was a series of bloody battles over the British throne by rival royal families. Sound familiar? The parallels with Game of Thrones’ War of Five Kings continue.

Joffrey resembles the bloodthirsty Edward of Lancaster, supposedly the illegitimate son of King Henry VI, who married the beautiful and ruthless Margaret of Anjou, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the character of Cersei on GoT, who distrusted Richard of York, who seems a lot like Ned Stark… We could go on.

The War of the Roses eventually ended when Henry Tudor married Elizabeth of York - which in Thrones terms could be a bit like Daenerys Targaryen marrying Jon Snow. Could it happen?

What is punishable under the changes to the penal code?
The law mostly applies to Muslims, including children who have reached puberty, though some aspects will apply to non-Muslims.

Under the new laws, individuals accused of certain acts will only be convicted if they confess or if there were witnesses present.

Offences such as rape, adultery, sodomy, robbery and insult or defamation of the Prophet Muhammad will carry the maximum penalty of death.
Lesbian sex carries a different penalty of 40 strokes of the cane and/or a maximum of 10 years in jail
The punishment for theft is amputation
Those who "persuade, tell or encourage" Muslim children under the age of 18 "to accept the teachings of religions other than Islam" are liable to a fine or jail
Individuals who have not reached puberty but are convicted of certain offences may be instead subjected to whipping.

What has global reaction been?
Sultan Hassanal heads the Brunei Investment Agency, which owns some of the world's top hotels including the Dorchester in London and the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles.

Brunei's ruling royals possess a huge private fortune and its largely ethnic-Malay residents enjoy generous state handouts and pay no taxes.

But Hollywood actor George Clooney and other celebrities have now called for a boycott of the luxury hotels. TV host Ellen DeGeneres also called for people to "rise up", saying "we need to do something now".

Is this the first time Islamic law is being introduced in Brunei?
The country first introduced Sharia law in 2014 despite widespread condemnation, giving it a dual legal system with both Sharia and Common Law. The sultan had said then that the new penal code would come into full force over several years.

The first phase, which covered crimes punishable by prison sentences and fines, was implemented in 2014. Brunei had then delayed introducing the final two phases, which cover crimes punishable by amputation and stoning.

Brunei is introducing strict new Islamic laws that make anal sex and adultery offences punishable by stoning to death.

The new measures, that come into force on Wednesday, also cover a range of other crimes including punishment for theft by amputation.

The move has sparked international condemnation.

Brunei's gay community has expressed shock and fear at the "medieval punishments".

"You wake up and realise that your neighbours, your family or even that nice old lady that sells prawn fritters by the side of the road doesn't think you're human, or is okay with stoning," one Bruneian gay man, who did not want to be identified, told the BBC.
The sultan of the small south-east Asian nation on Wednesday called for "stronger" Islamic teachings.

"I want to see Islamic teachings in this country grow stronger," Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah said at a public address, according to AFP news agency, without mentioning the new laws.
Homosexuality was already illegal in Brunei and punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Muslims make up about two-thirds of the country's population of 420,000. Brunei has retained the death penalty but has not carried out an execution since 1957.

Foreign Affairs / OSAMA BIN LADEN: US offers reward for Osama's son Hamza by xxolisexx(m): 7:23am On Mar 01, 2019
Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-47410846
The United States is offering a reward of up to $1m (£750,000) for information about one of the sons of the late al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

Hamza Bin Laden is emerging as a leader of the Islamist militant group, officials say.

He is thought to be based near the Afghan-Pakistani border.

In recent years, he has released audio and video messages calling on followers to attack the US and its Western allies in revenge for his father's killing.

In 2011, US special forces killed Osama Bin Laden in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. He approved the attacks on the US on 11 September 2001, in which nearly 3,000 people were killed.
What is known about him?
Hamza Bin Laden, who is believed to be about 30 years old, was officially designated by the US as a global terrorist two years ago.

The US state department says he married the daughter of Mohammed Atta, who hijacked one of the four commercial aircraft used in the 2001 attacks, and crashed it into one of the World Trade Center towers in New York.

Letters from Osama Bin Laden seized from his compound indicated that he had been grooming Hamza, thought to be his favourite son, to replace him as leader of al-Qaeda.
Hamza Bin Laden is believed to have spent years with his mother in Iran, where it is thought his wedding took place, while other reports suggest he may have lived in Pakistan, Afghanistan or Syria.

"We do believe he's probably in the Afghan-Pakistan border [sic] and... he'll cross into Iran. But he could be anywhere though in... south central Asia," said Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security Michael Evanoff.
What has happened to al-Qaeda?
The US-led war in Afghanistan following the 2001 attacks toppled the Taliban regime which had given Osama Bin Laden and his group sanctuary.

In recent years, al-Qaeda was eclipsed by the Islamic State (IS) group which attracted global attention, fighters and funds, and carried out a number of attacks on Western targets and allies.

"Al-Qaeda during this period has been relatively quiet, but that is a strategic pause, not a surrender," said US Co-ordinator for Counter-terrorism Nathan Sales.

"Today's al-Qaeda is not stagnant. It's rebuilding and it continues to threaten the United States and its allies.... Make no mistake, al-Qaeda retains both the capability and the intent to hit us."

Politics / Re: BREAKING NEWS: BBC UNCOVERS MASSIVE VOTE BUYING IN BOKO-HARAM HELD REGIONS by xxolisexx(m): 7:33pm On Feb 22, 2019
One relief worker told the BBC that Monguno was already overcrowded with displaced people.

More than 8,000 IDPs were affected when a fire broke out in one crammed camp in the town on 8 February.

"In addition to the security implications of this arrangement, with convoys being vulnerable to attacks, it is increasing the pressure and overcrowding in Monguno - now for an extended period - where thousands of IDPs are already existing in unacceptable conditions.

"After the elections, we are concerned that these people will just be abandoned where they are," the source said.

'Attempt to win voters'
Responding to questions from the BBC, the state governor's spokesman, Mr Gusau, confirmed that displaced people had been moved between Maiduguri and Monguno and vice versa.

He said that this had been agreed with the Independent Nigerian Election Commission (Inec) and all political parties.

"Rather than Monguno have two voting centres, one in Maiduguri and another in Monguno where majority of voters are, it was best to transport Monguno voters to Monguno to join the majority and vote there… all in an effort to make the election smooth."

Mr Gusau said life had returned to Monguno and it was now "accessible to everyone".

Paying for votes 'routine'
The ruling party is by no means alone in facing allegations of using cash to induce people to vote for its candidates.

Allegations of vote buying by the main parties are routine in elections in Nigeria, where power depends on wide networks of influence.

The opposition PDP has also been accused of spending large amounts of money to buy votes.

A reliable source in the town of Gwoza, about 130km south-east of Maiduguri, told the BBC that both main parties had offered money to displaced people in order to secure their votes.

According to the BBC's sources, the displaced were taken to two schools in Monguno - the Central Primary School and UBE Primary School - and an open area in the community.

Senior sources in several international organisations have confirmed that their staff on the ground had received similar reports from internally displaced people (IDPs).

According to these sources several thousand people may have been moved between different locations in order to vote.

The BBC spoke to two men who said they were part of a convoy of buses and lorries which travelled from Maiduguri to Borno in the days before the election was originally due to take place.

At their request we have protected the men's identities.

'Dangerous road'
"Mamdu", a farmer and father of eight children, said that there were 10 buses and three lorries. He estimated that each bus carried between 90 and 96 people.

We asked if they were afraid and whether Boko Haram operated on that road.

"Yes there is," he replied. "The road is very dangerous and it is only God that protects."

We asked him why he had made the journey.

He said he had been offered 20,000 naira (almost $55; £42) by representatives of the ruling APC to vote for the party in Monguno. He said he was first given 2,000 naira as an allowance, with more to come after the voting.

"It's because of the poverty we are facing," he replied, "and they promised to give us 20,000 each - that's why we decided to go with them".
"Ibrahim" said he was afraid on the journey and that people had been complaining that day because there was no water and there was no escort.

He too said he had gone because "I have family, thinking that the money I will get will help and solve some of my problems".

He said there was no arrangement about returning.

A vehicle was sent and the displaced "fought and rushed before we got in the car - and some of them are still in Monguno".

Isa Gusau, a spokesman for the state governor, rejected allegations of cash inducements, saying there was no need to offer money as the opposition had "near zero" chance of winning in the area.

Displaced people in north-east Nigeria have told the BBC they were transported through a dangerous conflict zone ahead of the country's elections in an operation agreed by the main political parties.

The BBC has been told that the unescorted convoys were organised with the agreement of both the ruling and main opposition parties, and the electoral commission.

Several thousand displaced people are believed to have been moved back to their home areas temporarily in order to vote.

Nigerians had been due to vote on 16 February but the polls were postponed until this Saturday.

Several witnesses described how displaced people had been organised into what they said was an unescorted convoy to make the journey from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, to the town of Monguno - a journey of 140km (87 miles) through territory which is known for attacks by Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa (Iswap).
Over the years, violence across the state has driven thousands to seek shelter in Maiduguri. But this, say senior officials from both the ruling All People's Congress (APC) and the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) creates logistical difficulties for those organising these elections because they would have to provide separate voting centres for each displaced group.
Officials decided that the larger groups could go back home to vote, if their towns were deemed safe.

Many of the displaced were originally from Monguno and had been uprooted in earlier attacks.

Sports / Stephen Keshi Stadium's Scoreboard Collapses by xxolisexx(m): 8:27pm On Feb 05, 2019
Barely three months after it was inaugurated, the score board mounted at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, has collapsed.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 7: 33 pm on Monday during a heavy wind that led to the collapse of the score board.

It may be recalled that former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday, November 19, 2018, inaugurated the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, urging Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, to effectively utilise the facility.
An eye witness said of the collapse, “I was just at the opposite of the stadium when I suddenly heard a sound.

“I thought it was the building from the top of the stadium and I discovered that it was the score board that fell during that heavy wind. But we thank God that nobody was injured.”

Reacting to the development, the Delta State Government noted that the heavy wind predicted across the country by NiMet caused the collapse of the score board.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, who stated this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the Delta State Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, said the score board destroyed part of the stadium but that no life was lost.
He explained that the damaged part of the complex would be fixed by the contractor as the project has not been handed over to the state government

Science/Technology / BREAKING NEWS: Up To 50m Facebook Accounts Attacked by xxolisexx(m): 6:42pm On Sep 28, 2018
source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-45686890
Facebook has said “almost 50 million” of its users were left exposed by a security flaw.
The company said attackers were able to exploit a vulnerability in a feature known as “View As” to gain control of people's accounts.
The breach was discovered on Tuesday, Facebook said, and it has informed police.
Users that had potentially been affected were prompted to re-log-in on Friday.
The flaw has been fixed, wrote the firm’s head of security, Guy Rosen.
"Since we’ve only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed. We also don’t know who’s behind these attacks or where they’re based. “
He added: "People’s privacy and security is incredibly important, and we’re sorry this happened."
