While the mass slaughtering of, and slaughter by, soldiers, is always a touchy subject of commemoration, a tension has existed between those who did the fighting, and those who ordered it. Comfortably secure in furnished rooms and battle props, planners would, as they still do, draw up the blueprints, concoct the strategy, and give the orders. In Australia, politicians should have every reason to stay out of the grief and suffering they contributed to by sending their citizenry (wait, subjects – for the State remains a constitutional monarchy) to countries they could barely spell. But the bosom and milk of British empire was, like US hegemony now, too powerful to resist. Enthusiastic, young volunteers were sent to be cut down in the fields of Flanders and the beaches of Gallipoli. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/politicians-and-the-anzac-tradition-a-story-of-manipulation-and-mythology/?utm_source=ReviveOldPost&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ReviveOldPost

The study, which was cited in the story and appeared in various national media, said that Nigeria had fallen short of paying off its whole debt to China, which had grown to N110.31 billion during the previous two years. The principle and repayment fees were included in the China debt stock, the paper said. Between January 2021 and December 2022, the principal fee was N69 billion ($153.85 million), while interest costs came to N41.3 billion ($92.1 million). But the DMO advised the public to disregard the article, calling it untrue, in a reaction that was recently posted on its website. “A closer look at the media publications will show that the body is completely detached from the headline which gives the impression that the publishers may have set out to mislead the public,” the debt office said... https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/dmo-asserts-that-nigeria-would-not-default-on-its-debt-to-china/?utm_source=ReviveOldPost&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ReviveOldPost

Femi Adesina is shameless. To think that he is even a supposed cleric makes him even more shameless. Only a shameless man would make bogus claims and with a straight face still insists that the gibberish he spews forth is the truth. Personally, I had resolved not to react to whatever Adesina or those who are media minders of President Buhari say, because it’s obvious that they have completely made a mess of whatever their assignment is and inadvertently done a great deal of disservice to their floundering principal. To be sure, Buhari will go down in history as the worst president Nigeria has had to date. Under Buhari, the nation has experienced a decline in every aspect of its existence. Under Buhari Nigeria is a huge killing field... https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/no-adesina-bishop-kukah-is-not-your-mate/?utm_source=ReviveOldPost&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ReviveOldPost

Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and erstwhile National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People’s Democratic Party (nPDP) Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, says insinuations that the Rivers APC has been fragmented into factions as is being peddled in a section of the media is not wholly true. Recall that one Tony Okocha, a known political jobber and self-styled Coordinator, South-South, of Bola Tinubu Vanguard, one of the social media support groups whose existence was inconsequential to the emergence of Tinubu as President-elect, has been parading himself as leader of the Rivers APC with the careless claim that he delivered the APC Presidential candidate in Rivers State... https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/rivers-apc-still-intact-under-chibuike-amaechi-eze/

The UK government has apologised to Mr Peter Obi after immigration officials admitted wrongly giving the Labour Party Presidential Candidate a detention note. Recall that UK immigration officials had detained Obi for committing several alleged financial crimes only to find out that he was being impersonated. The UK government also said the uncomplimentary treatment he received was “completely unacceptable,” and issued a personal apology. The News Chronicle earlier reported that the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, was unlawfully detained and interrogated for hours by immigration officials at Heathrow Airport in London on April 7, 2023. Over the last few weeks, there has been pressure on me from several quarters to openly align with one or another of the many gubernatorial aspirants on the Labour Party platform and I have deliberately parried that temptation, preferring instead to wait until the Party concludes her primaries. One has to understand that the political situation in Imo State is precarious, and more than mere political interests should be contemplated before throwing your support to anyone. Being the only viable alternative vehicle that can produce a governor of the people, major stakeholders, partisans and patriots must be circumspect in their speeches and actions in order to ensure that this vehicle’s tyres are not deflated and the vehicle grounded before a candidate emerges. The APC administration in Imo State does not delude itself about its chances in the governorship election. They know that Imolites do not have any confidence in them, and they will lose out in any election that is reasonably free and fair. They are therefore channeling all their resources to some extrajudicial, fraudulent, violent and even criminal measures in order to have any chance of retaining power in the State.... https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/imo-guber-the-challenges-before-labour-party/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ReviveOldPost

No true freedom fighter can obfuscate voices of freedom and democracy and still claim to be one. Professor Wole Soyinka has pitched his tent with the oppressors and enemies of the people. If he has not, he must recant and retrace his steps, and that way regain perspective and realign with old Soyinka. This new Soyinka is rather strange, looking more like a product of uncanny incestuous intercourse. Wole Soyinka in his most iconic quote told us: “The man dies in all who keep silent in the face of tyranny.” The quote is drawn from his prison memoir, The Man Died. A court in Kano has given a man till Friday to kill his cockerel following a neighbour’s complaint that the constant crowing deprives him of sleep. Magistrate Halima Wali issued the order against Malam Yusuf on Tuesday, declaring the bird a nuisance to the neighbourhood. Yusuf related to the court that he had bought the bird to celebrate Good Friday and asked to be given until the Christian holy day before killing it for a family feast. The judge granted the request but warned him to prevent the cockerel from roaming the area and disturbing residents. She also asked him to ensure he slaughters the bird on Friday as promised, or face a penalty from the court. It is esoteric to comprehend and nauseating to assimilate, that those who shouted “Go to court” after the rogue 2023 presidential election, are now afraid of the plaintiff and his court suits. Simply put: they have shown that their post-election taunts of “go to court” was borne out of sarcastic politeness, not that they expected anyone to obey it. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in whose favour, the fawning Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), mumbled the will of Nigerians on March 01 2023 and declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu ‘winner’ of the February 25 presidential election has been running from pillar to post, trying to frustrate those who have gone to court.... https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/easter-2023-democracy-on-the-cross/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ReviveOldPost

Recently the political space has been further heated by the narrative from the Tinubu camp that some people are ‘plotting’ to foist an interim government on the country. The subtext is that the ‘plotters’ are using the call for interim government as a veneer to stop Bola Tinubu, who was declared President elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), from being inaugurated as the President on 29 May 2023. The Department of State Service (DSS) lent legitimacy to the alleged plot by announcing (without naming names) that it had indeed uncovered a secret plan by some people to foist an interim government on the country through mass protests. While I do not personally believe in interim government or the idea of military rule, I will argue that those who are peacefully canvassing for any of these options, have not broken any laws of the land and as such should not be criminalized. In fact, I believe that such calls for interim government or even for military rule as an alternative to what we currently practice are mere expressions of the frustrations with our democracy rather than an attempt to target any person. Besides, not only does the country’s constitution not recognize an interim government, it is almost impossible for anyone to foist an interim government on the country – even through the doctrine of necessity – without an active buy-in of President Buhari who has repeatedly insisted that he would hand over power to Tinubu on 29 May 2023 and had already set up a Transition Committee for that. In this sense, the narrative that some groups are plotting to install an interim government seems to be a red herring. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/calls-for-interim-government-are-mere-expressions-of-frustrations-with-our-democracy/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ReviveOldPost

Ever since he ‘won’ the presidential poll of last February 25th the ‘President-elect’ has been subjected to all sorts of ridicule with his mountain of baggage coming to the fore.
