Bristol City striker, Benik Afobe, has related the sad news of his two-year-old daughter’s death.

He said baby Amora died from the complications of severe infection.

According to him, on Friday evening, Amora was taken to hospital after “unexpectedly” developing the infection, but a “number of serious complications” claimed her life.

Afobe joined Bristol City on loan from Stoke in the summer.

The former Arsenal striker announced the sad news on Sunday morning with a statement on Twitter, noting that he and wife, Lois Smith, were by Amora’s side until she breathed her last.

The statement reads: “It is with an extremely heavy heart that the Afobe family have today confirmed the devastating news that their first child, their beloved daughter Amora, 2, passed away late on Friday evening.

“Amora was taken to hospital for treatment after unexpectedly developing a severe infection.

“Unfortunately she then suffered a number of serious complications and, despite doctors doing absolutely everything that they possibly could, Amora passed away peacefully with the love of her family by her side.

“The entire family have been left totally devastated and heartbroken, and would like to ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.”

What is Thanksgiving?
America’s Thanksgiving holiday, born in the 1500s, mythologized in 1621, and observed even during the bleakest hours of the Civil War, now stands as one of the nation’s most anticipated and beloved days — celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November (November 28, 2019). Perhaps no other nonsectarian holiday has more tradition. Family, friends, food, and football have come to symbolize Thanksgiving — a rare celebratory holiday without an established gift-giving component. Instead the day urges all of us to be grateful for things we do have.
History of Thanksgiving
This story doesn’t necessarily start with Pilgrims.
Evidence shows that Spanish explorers and settlers held thanksgiving services during the late 1500s in what is now Florida and New Mexico. Thanksgivings also took place in what became the Commonwealth of Virginia as early as 1607, with the first permanent settlement of Jamestown holding a thanksgiving in 1610.
The ‘First’ Thanksgiving
It wasn’t until a decade later that the Plymouth settlers, known as Pilgrims, arrived in the New World. They celebrated at Plymouth for three days after their first harvest in 1621. The gathering included 50 people who were on the Mayflower (all who remained of the 100 who had landed) and 90 Native Americans. The feast was cooked by the four adult Pilgrim women who survived their first winter in the New World, along with young daughters and other servants.
Revolutionary times
During the war the Continental Congress appointed one or more thanksgiving days each year, each time recommending to the executives of the various states the observance of these days in their states. George Washington, leader of the revolutionary forces, proclaimed a Thanksgiving in December 1777 as a victory celebration honoring the defeat of the British at Saratoga.
The Continental-Confederation Congress, the legislative body that governed the United States from 1774 to 1789, issued several “national days of prayer, humiliation, and thanksgiving.” This would eventually manifest itself in the established American observances of Thanksgiving and the National Day of Prayer today.
In 1789 New Jersey congressman Elias Boudinot proposed that the House and Senate jointly ask President Washington to proclaim a day of thanksgiving for “the many signal favors of Almighty God.” Washington then created the first U.S. government-mandated Thanksgiving Day. It read in part: “Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of thee States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.”
The holiday would remain inconsistent for decades.
Civil War
President Lincoln, the war, proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day in 1863, to be celebrated on November 26 — the final Thursday of the month. Secretary of State William H. Seward wrote the proclamation that read in part:
“In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict.
“I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”
The U.S. has observed Thanksgiving ever since.
Future presidents followed Lincoln’s example of annually declaring the final Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving. But in 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt declared November’s fourth Thursday as Thanksgiving rather than the fifth one. FDR thought an earlier Thanksgiving would give merchants a longer period to sell goods before Christmas — and help bring the country out of the Depression. The House of Representatives has ordered its Committee on Power to probe operational and financial activities of the Niger-Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC).
The mandate of the Committee includes the review of all contracts awarded by the company since 2004.

The decision to investigate the entity followed the adoption of a motion moved by Chisom Dike on Wednesday.

Giving a background on NDPHC, Dike said “that the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) was conceived in 2004 as a fast-track government funded initiative to stabilize the Nigeria’s electricity supply system while the private-sector-Ied structure of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005 took effect.

“The initial funding for NIPP from the Excess Crude Savings Account (ECSA), the Federal Government incorporated the NDPHC as a limited liability company to serve as the legal vehicle to hold the NIPP assets using private sector-orientated best business practices.”

According to the motion, the awarding of contracts by NDPHC were in violation of the Public Procurement Act of 2007 and also accused the entity of abandoning projects.

“There are widespread allegations and controversies surrounding the award of contracts by the NDPHC for various projects including but not limited to contracts and payment of N350 million for additional works on Lot 14T Transmission Project, N244 million for extra works on New Abeokuta transmissions line (Lot 14-E), N104 million for Papalanto Old Abeokuta New Abeokuta 132 KV DC Transmission line (Lot 14-C).

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has hit back at Pep Guardiola, after the Manchester City manager accused Sadio Mane of diving.

The Nigerian Government has warned that it will not reopen its borders until a tripartite meeting is held with ECOWAS member states within next two weeks.

Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, made this known on Monday in Abuja while briefing newsmen following an Inter-Ministerial meeting Preparatory to the Tripartite Anti-Smuggling Committee Meeting of Nigeria, Benin and Niger.

Onyeama said that the meeting was under the directive of President Muhamadu Buhari regarding the border closure, stating that it was the desire of Mr President that the issues should be addressed as quickly as possible.

Onyeama said that the Nigerian Government insisted that member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), must as a matter of necessity, respect the Rules of Origin.

“Within the next two weeks, a tripartite committee is to be convened and hosted here in Nigeria comprising a delegation, a committee of Benin Republic, from Niger, and from Nigeria.

“Each country will come with the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Finance, the Customs, Immigration and NIA, the security segment.

“The Nigeria committee has met to look at the situation and we have agreed on a set of conditions and these conditions are as follows.

“That it is an absolute requirement of the Government of Nigeria that any imports coming through our land borders, when those imports are transit in goods.

Another petrol tanker falls in Onitsha, residents flee
A tanker loaded with Petroleum Motor Spirit, PMS, on Thursday afternoon fell into a ditch along Onitsha/Enugu expressway by Chipex Filling station, Onitsha, spilling its product.

Though, there is no fire outbreak, but residents of Onitsha around the area have begun running away from the area to avoid an outbreak of fire.

As at the time of filling this report, PMS is still spilling out of the fallen tanker, a source said.
The spokesperson of Anambra State Police command, SP Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident, saying that men of the command have also cordoned off the area, when residents of the area are being stopped from attempt to scoop fuel from the tanker.

This is the wonderful thing about the human mind when it comes to what it does and doesn’t find appealing. It’s so inconsistent! Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, confirmed this development in a statement on Monday, saying that the President will be in London for a private visit and will return to Nigeria on Nov. 17 after he must have spent 2 weeks. Adesina did not give further details on the President’s trip to London.

4. There appears to be a setback in the salary adjustments on the N30,000 minimum wage as the Nigeria Governors’ Forum on Monday said states would not pay above what they can afford. The Chairman of the NGF and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, while speaking after the forum’s meeting in Abuja said the Federal Executive Council could not decide for states. He said it is now left to states to engage their workers on the way forward.
